Well said and that video truly explains it in detail. This guy with his logical fallacies that thinks the old Spiderman games compare!
The only reason the game is acting the way he claims is because of the swing assist being so high. Even on 1 it doesnt behave this way.

And speak what he has to say.
10% with no fall damage is bassically for the children.

My perspective:
Yes, Spider-Man should run faster and downwards on walls
Spider-Man should be able to run along the ground while swinging.
You should be able to manually control when you let go of web lines.
Coming off that, you should be able to manually aim your next web line to swing from.
Being able to sling shot like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game would be nice, and you should be able to get from island to island with momentum.
A faster, more fleshed out swimming system would be nice.
Thing is, these things are nice-to-haves, not vitals. The web swinging system is pretty much the best there ever has been.
Except wall crawling, which is my only actual complaint. It still sucks. The TASM games did wall crawling better.

You’ve probably never seen someone complete two continuous loop the loops in Spider-Man 2 because the game doesn’t artificially boost your momentum during a loop. It simply lets you hold onto the web for as long as you want. That's his whole point when he talks about this.
If you’re moving fast and hold onto a rope, you’ll naturally complete a loop because that’s how centripetal force works. When Spider-Man is holding onto a static object via a web, the web’s tension creates the centripetal force needed to pull him into a circular motion. Essentially, he acts like a pendulum as you said. However, most pendulums don’t complete a full circle unless they have enough speed and energy to counteract gravity. The amount of speed needed is a lot compared to the speed needed to keep a pendulum swining normally.
If Spider-Man has a ton of speed, the centripetal force will exceed gravity, keeping the web taut and allowing a clean loop. If his speed is just slightly too low, the web might slacken at the top of the loop, snapping taut again as he descends, possibly giving him a small speed boost. If he doesn’t have enough speed at all, he’ll simply fall back down, and the web will slacken or lose tension entirely. It’s all about the balance between gravity and the tension force.
In PS4/5 Spider-Man, this dynamic is completely absent. The web acts more like a rigid hinge, eliminating slack, bounce, or realistic tension dynamics. A web isn't even a rigid body as it phases in and out of buildings. Even worse, the game artificially speeds you up at the top of a loop to ensure you complete it, which feels cheap and unrealistic. While Spider-Man 2 isn’t perfect, at least it avoids artificially boosting momentum and tries to respect physics within its limitations. It even respects webs as rigid bodies.
That’s why it’s frustrating to think about the development process at Insomniac. Somewhere, there were probably engineers who understood physics and wanted to create mechanics that reflected real-world dynamics-like webs with tension slack, loops requiring realistic speeds, and a traversal system grounded in science and player choice. But at some point, a lead designer likely said, “If it looks cool, we ship it,” and physics took a backseat along with player choice. That decision sacrifices immersion for aesthetics, which feels like a missed opportunity in a game centered on a character who is inherently grounded in science and physics.
This taps into the age-old debate: Should art strive to imitate real life? While no one expects radical realism for the sake of accuracy in a superhero game, Spider-Man’s powers are uniquely grounded in plausibility. His traversal, in particular, relies on science and intelligence, not on defying the laws of physics. That’s why a game prioritizing physics-based swinging over superficial prettiness feels like the truer representation of the character.
Another banger, I feel like people put 2004 movie game too high on a pedestal. While Spider-man 2 doesn’t hit as good story wise compared to first (the stuff there was still fire), the traversal is peak.
A common issue I see is people saying “It isn’t as fast as web of shadows and the movie game.” Which I can understand in a way but faster doesn’t always equal better.
The older games are going to have better traversal. This isn't putting the games on a pedestal. This is a fact of reality. Spider-Man's webswinging in Ultimate and Spider-Man 2 (Movie) are not hacks. They are the real deal. It's actual physics. Spider-Man (Modern) relies on animations and hackery to make its Webswinging work. There are issues with the older titles but the newer ones are fundamentally flawed because they rely on you not paying attention to the animation too closely or trying to break it.

@@Joker-dn5xs glad there’s a comment section of people who actually get it. On FB, I had a long back and forth argument with someone who seemed to be d-riding Batman Arkham City, as it’s put here, and was also making the usual idiotic claims that Spider-Man 2 played it too safe and didn’t do much to improve on its predecessors. I kept explaining how it did and that if the new combat abilities, traversal mechanics, bigger map, greater enemy variety, etc. don’t count as major gameplay improvements, then the improvements made in Arkham City from Asylum shouldn’t mean much either. The response I got was always basically just “no you’re wrong. The Arkham series improvements are more meaningful because… reasons. I win. Bye bye.” Like it’s already been said here, if someone wants to criticize sequels for being similar to their predecessors, they should at least hold that standard for everything and not be a biased, hypocritical fanboy/girl toward a specific series.
Never thought about in that way of people desperately trying to hold on to their precious nostalgic gems like they’re the second coming of Jesus in the forms of video games, but that does seem plausible. I also don’t get why all of a sudden it’s a problem that sequel games function similarly to the original. I’ve seen people making the same dumbass claims about Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom, being “it’s just an expansion, it’s full priced DLC, it’s just more of the same” so it’s definitely not just SM 2. Part of me believes that a lot of of these criticisms are being made mostly by Batman Arkham fanboys who are just jealous because a superhero who is just as popular and iconic as Batman, one from the the universe’s main competing universe nonetheless, now has a game franchise whose financial and critical success rivals that of Batman Arkham, and it’s only being furthered by how the latest entry in said franchise happens to have a gliding mechanic that is superior to the one they have, which is more or less the same four games in a row.

I feel like his argument about "realism" not being as present in Spider-man 2 PS5 doesn't make much sense considering it's a FICTIONAL world with FICTIONAL characters who aren't exactly experiencing the same physics we are. Why does it matter that the Spider-men you play as aren't following real world physics like cancelling all his inertia when wall running? He's already defying the G-forces that would be sucking all the blood from his brain on the first swing anyway. Sure, SOME physics is needed for swinging to feel nice. But as long as the experience is good, why should it matter that it's unrealistic. It's already unrealistic and nobody really cares
Where do all the “Marvels Spider-Man 2 is Bad because (insert dumb argument here), look a ps2 game is so much better” this entire discussion is so incredibly stupid. I know the internet love it when people are just negativ but at this point it’s even funny anymore.
watched this yesterday and immediately went “Colin’s gonna tear this guy a new one”
Seems like Spider-Man 2 is the game everyone wants to hate on just like GOWR last year
I could watch spiderman 2 swinging for hours

saw a video called "how the haters swing in spider-man ps4" and it's just a clip of spider-man doing the combat swing constantly...it looks smoother than some critic's legit swinging too.
Man compared just cause 3 a game where you have a jet pack to Spider-Man 2 where you don’t have a jet pack 💀 I took wingsuit personally there called WEBWINGS
Is it just me or do a lot of people who say that games play themselves (in traversal or combat) just not engage in the actual gameplay?
Like, they do the basics and then complain that it's too simple.
I've known people to complain about combat in games being boring because they can beat the game by spamming one powerful attack but like, that's on you, mate.
Sure, the devs might have should have added a restriction or some other method of encouraging variety, but you could also actually engage in the gameplay.
bro I love that you use Spider-Man 2 photo mode positions when you talk it's just so funny and smooth because he has the right expressions with what you say 😂
I love how your gameplay is so clean that people literally think the footage is sped up. Nah it's just great gameplay and great physics too
This guy has a hard on for spider-man 2 movie game, why is everything compared to a game from the past, I’ll be honest the webslinging in the movie game was good but nothing special, insomniac web slinging is the best there’s ever been on a spider-man game period.
Bro said without being flashy then proceeds to play 8 mins of him being flashy
He wants margin of error. He wants the ability to be wrong, which is perfectly fine. All of his criticisms stem from lack of control, and rush in ability to lose. I think you're missing the point of his criticism. However, you do point him out as explicitly wrong mulitple times, so you're not all wrong either. The first couple of minutes felt a bit disingeniuous, and your web swinging footage ran a bit long (good footage though, tbf), but good video.
As a web of shadows apologist, I want the wall knee slide back though, shit's fire.
THANK YOU bro. Been anticipating this response since that video is so ridiculous it drove me half-crazy watching it. This is actually so much better than if you were to have reacted to it on stream like you did with Synthetic Man's "review". I'm very interested to see how Dark Space would respond.
I feel like Insomniac spiderman 2 swinging is sort of like parkour in the classic assassin's creed games, in that it has a simple control scheme and is highly accessible. If you just hold down a couple of buttons you can get away with being absent minded and, in that regard, it can be problematic because the game itself doesn't really invite the player to challenge themselves. There aren't many cases in classic creed or in spiderman 2 where it really matters if you're good. However, as your clips showed, the player that's willing to dig deeper can really push the limits of both speed and style, with pathfinding ability being a big factor too. It's good to see someone actually showing the speed that can be achieved in Insomniac's swinging 👍
23:52 when I saw this I immediately got reminded of videogamedunky's review of batman arkham city where he's like "you can win every battle by just contering". Like...who cares?? Nobody will play like that ever anyway
His point about floating when starting a swing was one I didn't catch on to when I watched the original video, it had me kind of yucked about it because I assumed he was talking about having swing assist disabled. Thanks for pointing out his contradiction, dude!
the dive is to build up the right amount of momentum to yank you into a circle if you take a ball of a sring and throw it fowrad itll loop because of its speed and momentum
his swinging vs gliding thing is so laughably wrong that even ign themselves disproved it because even they somehow swung better. You can see his swinging is literally just R2 and forward. he used 0 loops sideways and upwards and did nothing like the slingshot or anything else. Laughable.
As someone who doesnt own sm2, but does own sm1 and 1.5 (pc & ps4 gaming momento) those clips you showed made me genuenly think for half a second i should buy a ps5.
Bro spiderman 2 just came out not too long ago and people already got something to say 😭

I hope insomniac Games doesn't pay to much attention to impressing probably this 1 person, you've got a lot of good points Colin.
he sounds like he's reading a script written by ai
my only real issue with your swinging that i have, and its personal thing, but every time you use one of the movement jumps, you use the other one as well. i always see you using both rather than using them when the specific situation calls for one of them, so whenever you use them i just get the pattern sound of it stuck in my head and it bugs me. but at every other turn your swinging is fantastic and i feel like you more than any one else is very good at highlighting the extreme strengths this swinging system has and just what can achieve.
Yeah I do the same tbh. Trying to get out of that lol
My favourite comment was when he compared it to racing games and said "they don't steer for you or brake for you" and like... They literally do! If you turn up all the assists in the modern Forza games, the car will literally drive itself - but guess what, most players will turn those down to have a more challenging experience, while they are there to make the games accessible to more people... EXACTLY LIKE SPIDERMAN!!! His own analogy proves quite how contrived his argument is.
It’s concerning how many RUclipsrs there are that lack critical thinking skills and have platforms to spew this kinda garbage, people who say the swinging and combat are “the same” or even bad are not pushing the limit of what you can really do in the game. My bro who is a baldurs gate nerd keeps saying it’s a button mash game and he hasn’t even tried any of the games. They don’t understand that just because a game is easily accessible doesn’t mean the game lacks a skill ceiling in which you can master the many mechanics that they give you. A game being more difficult or unnecessarily unforgiving doesn’t make it a better game, games are meant to be fun and if a fun game has a high skill ceiling then it gives the people who want more of a challenge room to master it and the people who want easy simulator what they want too. How does that make it bad it’s multifaceted and catered to all different types of players instead of just 1 kind of player
I was arguing with couple people saying the spiderman 2 movie game has better psychics, people really living in the early 2000s I loved that game dearly as a kid but to say it has better psychics than this new game is beyond tarded to me
@@AG-sj4omAll they do is dick ride the fucking movie game 😭
The fact that i need to think when i will web swing so i won't fall disproves almost everything he said. Also, how tf do he wants the spider men to turn 180 while he's gliding mid air (talk about realizem). I got what's the point he's trying to make but he does it so poorly
Tbh i believe you both make good points and seeing the footage of you swinging around has definitely opened up my eyes more! I respect the time and dedication to your learning of the depth. Im always for depth in shmovement [enter dialogue about rocket jumping].
I definitely think it needs to be encouraged more to turn it off in the settings because on the surface it doesnt seem like much of a difference, if you even look through the settings in the firstplace, or watch one of these videos. Like a choice at the start (like difficulty setting in most games) for the depth alternative. A "normal" and "master" web swinging modes would be great! Everyone will know of their existence and game journalists can stay happy.
With the "its not physics based, its just animations mostly guided by the game", i kinda get where his coming from, ive built a simular system, look at how the Uncharted climbing works and how you control the direction but it warps to the spot. Its a mixture of root motion animation and motion warping. Spiderman obviously has a point of center of the swing, and orbits around it with a cosmetic web between points. Technically it is physics based, but it you are consistently shoved forward to be able to do loops and effortlessly swing. I DO like this, helps with the flow while keeping depth. Though it does do the Uncharted thing from time to time, whenever you web to a sitting point, touch a ledge etc. But its mooostly for the assist mode.
I would also prefer the web on 0 assist not to clip through the wall, but to wrap around with cable physics. Forcing you to keep webbing while going around a building instead of just spinning around it. I get the reason it doesnt is because its only a mesh beam particle but that could of been replaced easily.
You mentioned pole swinging which i completely forgot about. Ngl that would add to flow, if you're on the ground you could swing up and launch off (like jumping before going into squatting) and start swinging. But spinning around it building momentum. Not a critique i just think it would be cool.
I disagree with both of you with the fact he cant run fast. Design wise this is an incentive to not run around. If you could run fast, players, especially casuals would be more convinced to just run a portion of the game. Just like in Doom, you get punished for playing slow and defensively, here you get punished for not swinging like spiderman would. I know the swinging is fun, but fun isnt an incentive if you get the high speeds with minimum effort. The best games are always those that force the player to play in the most fun ways possible by punishing you for playing it boring.
Tbh instead of running up the wall i 100% would of prefered slamming into it rather than running up immediately. With an ability to press a button at the perfect timing to immediately go into the run. But miss the timing and youre now falling with some health loss, still able to attach to it then run up. Adds some more risk vs reward.
It's just cause he sucks at swinging with no other reason. Also there is no way he is saying that Spider-man 2 is better, it's good and all, but I hate looking at the game, it feels like seeing one red dot moving across rectangles.
I swear if I see someone use Spider-Man 2 the movie game to try and debunk Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 one more time…

Like how does bro complain about the swinging being too easy and Automated, when he literally mentions swing assists? 😭🙏
Watching people playing spider man 2 with 0 swing assist is my equivalent to subway surfers and Minecraft parkour under videos
Regarding his point about the Statue of Liberty, you can’t webwing/surf your way there because I’m pretty sure when you get far out enough, there’s an invisible barrier and an image will pop up on the screen saying you’re heading out of bounds; meaning you actually have to break the game if you want to get there. And even if you do that, the island isn’t fully rendered, so you can’t even stand on it; meaning you’re not even supposed be able to be there (perhaps it’ll be a new playable area in the third game).
I don’t get why he has to go so in-depth about stuff you can’t do that isn’t even that big of a deal because, like you said, why would we be doing that. I think the swinging is fun in this game.
Muffin
I wish you could though
If this guy is that bad at Swinging with Assist on i highly doubt he can swing for shit on the old spiderman 2.

I find the whole debate about web wings being faster than swinging so pointless. They're both there because they're fun. If you wanna get to a location as fast as possible, just fast travel. The game has one of the quickest and seamless fast travel mechanics I've ever seen in a video game. Very impressive at a technical level but no one pays attention to it because its not fun. Swinging and gliding are there because it feels really good to just soar through the air, to feel like spider-man. It's not there because it's the best way to get from point A to point B.
Yeah bro I saw this and knew you'd disect it. He's like: "THERES NO CHALLENGE." Not really about the video, but I can’t wait until the next insomniac spiderman game drops because we all know the swinging will be EVEN BETTER. Each game they’ve improved upon in some way and SM2 improved so much from Miles Morales people just love to whine and complain when they don’t get exactly what they hoped for.
I don't see where you messed up in any of those clips but maybe that's because i haven't played the game enough to know.
