I see so many amazing quilts but I’m a new quilter and seriously appreciate seeing or hearing that other people struggle with some of the same things I do and that yes, with practice, it’ll continue to get better and better!
My first free-motion quilt was a throw. It's a good size for practicing and no big deal if it looks sketchy, you didn't wreck a queen! My swirls were not smooth, the spacing was quite variable, they weren't random, turned out more like rows no matter how hard I tried to randomize. And the back tension!?😂. But I improved quickly thanks to Angela's unwavering positivity and optimism and my practice on each quilt. Now I would say I'm pretty good 😊.
You have helped me to become a much better quilter than I imagined. One other tip that helped me is to SLOW DOWN. When I took my time, I would do much better. After mastering the process, you can speed up. Thanks so much for making this hobby so much more enjoyable!
I am having problems but I love watching your videos. It helps me to get into the groove once I can finally get back into doing more quilts. I save all your videos so I can see them when ever I feel the need to sit down and try sewing one of the ways to quilt. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us. ❤❤❤❤
Love watching your programs. You’ve inspired me. A few years ago, I found myself living in an out of town motel for work. I took my small machine and one of your books, and had a fun time. Thank you!
I'm looking forward to a challenge on swirls! I'm currently working on a project where I want to use some swirls in the sky and I'm really glad your chat was on this today!!
I learnt ribbon candy because of Angela. Mine looked like thumbs until I watched Angela. She made it all come together. Thank you so much. I have grown so much because of Angela.
All of your designs are works of art! Thank you for teaching us and for answering questions! That’s helpful for everyone listening. God bless you for putting your daughter’s tennis match as more important than making another video! You’re only going to have a few more years to prove through your actions that she comes first. You won’t regret it!
When I started FMQ I did a chair pad with swirls and thought if this is all I can do I'll be happy. Mainly use them now as fills. Love your swirl patterns. ❤
Watching this later as I worked on Thursday. You are right, practice is a key, also “embracing the suck” as you will improve with practice. I only rip out if it is absolutely terrible, hardly ever anymore because when you step back, it’s the texture you will see (as you say). I just finished the panel and there’s one little part that I really don’t like but I can’t find it if I am standing back and looking at the whole, finished quilt. Thanks to you and all for cheering us on and helping us learn!
I’m older and my signature still sucks because I type everything. 🤣 but Hope Springs Eternal. Your videos are awesome and the images are so helpful. Thank you, Angela.
It's a 'Tennis Match' - supposed to be the healthiest sport! I am 70 and play everyday! It is definitely a life time sport, great social sport, exercise and lots of fun! Good for her; you should learn how to play. When I was younger I envied my friends who got to play with their mom. Love playing with my daughter now.
I am a newbie with FMQ .... I have made several quilt toppers, brought all your books, and watched all your videos. Brought several rulers and attempted several times. Practising on scraps. But I am still struggling to get the technique of FMQ, what can I do to get over my apprehensive of quilting. I love your work. And find your advice and instructions so helpful. Would the swirl be easier for me to master. Rather then thinking about all other designs.
I need to take the plunge and do one of your quilt a longs and jump onto the free motion train. Thus far I’ve really only quilted with pantos, no custom stuff.
I don't know if this will help you. Get a dry erase board and keep drawing the shape you want to quilt. Once you go to your fabric, you will have that muscle memory. I have a harder time on the domestic sewing machine, but I never really practiced enough. I got a mid arm, then a long arm, and found it easier because it's on a carriage so where ever you move the machine, it stitches. The sewing machine, you are the carriage to make the fabric move. When I started practicing on fabric, it looked terrible. I found I could just put another piece of fabric on top of my quilt sandwich, then try again. Another thing I do is put a clear piece of vinyl, the one you buy to cover your tablecloth so it doesn't get stained, on top of the piece you want to quilt. You can draw on that with a dry erase marker. It will give you a visual of what your design will look like on your quilt. Just make sure you put painters blue tape all around the edges of the vinyl so you don't accidentally mark your quilt top. The more you do it, the better and easier it will be. Angela is such a great teacher. I have learnt so much from her. Hope this helps you.😊

I’m excited to improve my skills for swirls. Thank you for the “training wheels”

Your tips have saved my sanity sooooooo many times. Thank you!
Love these live chats Angela! Please continue! I practice using my eraser board, and place my design next to my sewing machine.

Thank goodness! Swirls are the hardest for me. Looking forward to the next challenge!

Love me some swirls!

What type of thread do you quilt with that is so beautiful and shiny?
Swirls are a challenge so this giveaway would be great practice!

Love swirls!!
On your whirls kit, what is the finished size of the top and do the marked lines wash out?
My first free motion challenge was the fillers. So now I have trouble doing larger designs. Any tips?
Would you recommend starting on the machine, or longarm for swirls as a newbie?

Not too confident with free motion quilting, but after watching your tutorials I feel I can challenge it……
I’m a newbie and really want to learn how to do swirls.
Where is the link
I realize I need to relax my shoulders when doing the FMQ
How do you make sure that all your swirls aren’t going the same way?
Hi angela
Your tips have saved my sanity sooooooo many times. Thank you!
