This has got to be the most true to original remake/remastering thats ever been created (well next to REmake). Its essentially Half-Life 1, only bigger and better. With this being pretty much
double the length of the original, while not feeling like anythings really been changed, only the levels have become way more fleshed out, and vast visual improvements.
I really appreciate the work put into this upload, this game is an amazing mod. I adore the first half life above the others just for the memories, the fear I had as a kid. Again, thanks a lot.
Just wish the soldiers were still fun to fight, they became the worst part about black mesa with them now knowing exactly where you are based off distance instead of vision and noise.
For example, 2:18:30 if you were to get off the rail and try to crouch walk towards the soldiers with the timestamp being the starting position like I did, the soldiers start calling out for action at the exact position you stopped the rail at before you even have an indication they're around. Shit like that was not around in hl1 and the lack of being able to outsmart the soldiers without them getting the jump on me is exactly the reason the soldiers are the worst part about black mesa.

I really hope that they should do the same for Operation Black Mesa (Half-Life Opposing Force) and Guard Duty (Half-Life Blue Shift) remakes/Remastered, perhaps make them also GOG in the future, You'd have the perfect Black Mesa trilogy.
the long ride in the train at the start was such a great opening to a game it really set the tone and built atmosphere and suspense for the player, by the time you step off you are fully immersed and invested in the world, what a masterpiece of storytelling
Right, keep in mind that the intro train ride in the original Half-life was 10 levels out of the roughly 100 levels. So about 10% of the levels were used just for the train intro -.-

@@meatball5336 By level I mean map files (bsp files). I just pulled out my Half-life folder (steam version) and my memory wasn't that precise ^^. The whole game (not counting the hazard course or the multiplayer maps) has 116 bsp files. The original train ride consists of 6 bsp files which were loaded roughly at those times

BlackMesa has combined some of the maps since the source engine can handle larger maps. The original game had another loading point at about 08:35 where the first map of the first chapter was loaded ( c1a0 ). Half-life was essentially the first fps game which has seamless level transitions. The next level and the previous one essentially has an identical overlapping area where the transition happens. The maps contain markers (info_landmark) which tells the game where and how to stitch the maps together. When a new map loads, you are literally in a completely new map. You (the player) as well as all surrounding entities are simply relocated in the new map according to the land marks so it looks like you're still in the same world and the journey continues.

Hell yeah, Half-Life is truly a legendary game, not only for its time but, for all time.
I was 18 and owned an HP pc with a Voodoo vid card and bought it brand new for pc from a Babbages game store at the mall. I had played Wolfenstein, Descent (which was really awesome) Duke Nukem and Doom, but Half-Life really brought a lot of new things to the table such as characters who talked and a varied storyline with plot twists.
And Half-Life 2 in the early 2000’s was even better! What a great franchise. I’m happy to have played it when it was all new. Games just aren’t the same now✌️

For me...the Xen chapter is what really make this remake a masterpiece, kudos to the developer for making it a living, breathing alien world
I remember how much this game blew my mind 21 years ago. NO game has come close to having the same impact on me since. The Xen chapter was fantastically weird and frightening.
I also love how it basically made the layout of Black Mesa make more sense. In the original, it was good but it felt too gamey. Here, it feels like it’s actually a research facility

I love this game, one con: optimalization sucks hard, sometimes game crashed and many times FPS drops to 1. But despite that it's a piece of a solid and beautiful job. And the music... oh man, pure perfection.

This walkthrough is not from the Definitive edition v1.5. Its from an earlier version possibly 1.0. The section at 1:55:00, at the beginning of Power Up, has some significant differences from v1.5. For example in order to kill the behemoth in v1.5 you flip some switches in this walkthrough you have to put some plugs into sockets.
It's such a minute detail, but I loved that they remembered in the tram section that Barney should not have his vest and helmet yet per Blue Shift's story.
A full playthrough is about as long as my normal workday - nice little touch.
Tips for Tau Cannon. When you charge the gun, if the enemy hides behind a wall or a cover. Shoot directly at the wall, the energy beam fired after hitting the wall will automatically find the enemy behind that wall. If behind a wall or a cover there are 2 or 3 enemies, they will all die with just one shot. I consider this the most cheating weapon in the game. It is extremely powerful and useful in games at the stage of dealing with the military. Because most gun fights, you will fight them in the rooms, and all you need to do is charge the gun and shoot through the wall, all enemy will die without having to aim, hide, or flank the enemy.EZ. I still remember the Lan network matches with my friends. And this gun is banned because you know, it's a cheating gun. And in some cases. In Xen, the gun is very useful for flying. the gravity there is weak and you charge the gun, shoot it to the ground, the reaction force will push you pretty far into the ...“Space, the final frontier” , I have to say "I believe I can fly ... with Tau Cannon"

I'm sure for people who've never played Half-Life this will be a real treat. For those who did played Half-Life 1 and 2. A lot of level design will feel eerily familiar. Like that one portal section that's like the citadel reactor section. And how the ending is kind of like Half-Life 2 ending. But I do like the new Xen a lot, the extra green and details to the biome makes Xen feels like it has an actual ecosystem and more wholesome.
This is exactly how Square SHOULD have "remade" Final Fantasy 7. Kept true to the original but fleshing out places that seemed a bit thread-bare.
I like the touch of Kleiner being fascinated by the headcrabs
I was playing Dead Space before this one before I see this. Therefore, when I see Freeman can lift and throw things without hands, that reminds me of stasis in Dead Space.
In addition, when Freeman is breaking crates with the crowbar, it really reminds of Minecraft

At 4:15:13 there is a military vehicle on its side, with a vent above it. A vent that looks as if it should be accessible, either from this side or the other. I've not seen any walkthroughs that use that vent, and I personally never found a way to reach it.

Unbelievably good! Better than most of the so called shooters I've played in the last 5 years. Better than most games I've played in the last 10. And this was made by a group of independent devs/fans?

Don't get me wrong, I love the original Half-Life, it's one of the first PC games I ever bought. But after watching this video (and ignoring the fact that this game and the original were made many years apart), this makes the original look like a cheap third-party remake. The fact that Black Mesa is a third-party remake is astounding. The amount of detail and effort put into this is unbelievable. Also great video, thoroughly enjoyed watching this.

I was never a fan of how they broke continuity @1:36:00 , where you can't see the bottom of that area with the green goo anymore. It's like you went inside the cylinder, but you haven't yet. In the OG, it's one big continuous room even after you've taken the elevator up there.

to be fair, the shotgun in black mesa is fucking horrible. literally the most clunky and inconsistent weapon i've ever used in any video game, especially when you compare it to the original half life shotgun

This remake just shows how half life 2 really changed the gaming industry, it’s basically half life 1 with all the assets visuals and mechanics as the original half life 2, that’s it, literally the same game with a few tweaks but makes it so much better, god damn I love the half life series, too bad I’m not much of a PC gamer tho, I’m more of a console fuck boy

Since there is no helmet, the armor can't protect them, Gordon isn't turned into a zombie because of plot armor I suppose lol

hey so i have a qeustion. In 40:07 level looks different than and i saw it on couple letsplays/walkthroughs etc- some people have the vent with red light on the right from entrance and some people have it on left on the entrance - anybody knows why?
Well the game was played alot in early access before full release, this is the full release build.
@@PBHorrorGamingnot really. your letsplay is the old version. i asked about this vent changing place on official discord. They moved the vent from the right to the left in version 1.05 or so so the vent is shorter to pass

And no. They had offered the role to Mike Shapiro, but he turned it down. The team has it's own G-Man voice actor.
You have to remember Gordon Freeman started Hell on Earth when he pushed the Specimen into the Anti-Mass-Spectrometer which leads to killing Nihilanth who is sending more Aliens to Earth so while Gordon is fighting for his life in Half-Life 1 everyone else on Earth is also fighting for their lives against Xen creatures that have just teleported into their homes or jobs. Black Mesa wasn't the only place hit with Aliens there were 2 Headcrabs in the Oval Office in Washington D.C, Vortigaunts and Bullsquids in London, Tentacles and Vortigaunts in Africa, Gargantua's in Paris, Alien Controllers and Houndeyes in New York City, Snarks in your Bathroom, Ichthyosaur's in all the Lakes and Oceans, Gargantua's and Antlion's in Australia. The whole world was affected by The Resonance Cascade which following the death of Nihilanth caused Portal Storms all over Earth which leads to the Seven Hour War with the Combine and those that survived the Xen Creatures the first encounter are the ones that have to survive the Seven Hour War and they Lost to the Combine and now Gordon has to once against step up to the plate and stop the combine.

Wow Xen is like a third of this playthrough, that why I love this remake, unlike HL1’s Xen which was long and sucked, but Black Mesa’s is longer and is absolutely incredible.
Such a shame they added Xen to Black Messa. Should have somehow reworked the story ending so that Xen was never in question of existing instead of ruining the game with that most cancerous set of levels known to history of humanity.
Dear god the Alien Controllers are so much more terrifying than the original.
I'd like to see remakes like this of Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay.
