That's it- no more Hollywood films for me- all Foreign films- amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting this movie- I'm from Canada and I have to start watching Foreign movies more so. :) Much love- stay safe everyone-
this was not the fault of her grandfather - he knew she lived Werner but it was not possible for them to be together due to the war. Remember the Nazis controlled France & she loved her grandfather too. Impossible!! 😢
Such a heart touching and lovely movie it is 💖.... ooh!! still i am crying. I don't know how i understood the whole story and felt like....why she has let him go.... her goodbye was more like "please don't go"... and his smile was like "I know you love me". My heart was sinking at the end...... it was painful. The lead actors were so good. Love the movies. Thanks from India 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I watched over and over again. I never fell boring from watch again. Such emotions.. Such respect.. Such noble manners.. But the war always come with casualties, sadness and speration.
I'm hooked for life on this movie and can't stop thinking of poor Werner who decided to be transferred to the Russian Front knowing he would surely perish.
Absolutely powerful film. They lacked physical touch and verbal communication, yet their love and complicated feelings were so tangible. Such a hard thing to pull off, especially crafting a naive Nazi officer worth admiration. I believe he went on to die and possibly she did as well. And though the audience wants to see them fight for one another, both are honorable and selfless people that would choose their duty even though unbearably painful. As a viewer we learn the cost and suffering of war on what should have been something as beautiful as true love. Thank you so much for keeping this up.
What a great story; great acting, great timing. I'll never forget this. Thanks for the subtitles. You see what war can do with people? Stories like this can and do happen all the time, everywhere.
If it were not for the war they would probably never have met. Thanks to the war it happened, and they lived their whole life during that short encounter. Quite possibly they both perished, which is sad! There is so much sadness in this life! Awesome film, awesome actors!
Would be nice if they had a sequel to his movie. He makes it through the war and returns to France afterwards and they reunite, marry and grow old together surrounded by their love of music and the sea. I'd really love that.
The ending is so sad. If they weren't at war, Werner and Jeanne would be perfect for one another; they both love classical music, play the piano, lost their dads in WW1.....and now you know he's facing certain death at the Russian front.
I believe she might have joined the French Resistance because if he were to die - she wasn't keen on having any hope for herself either. I just wished they followed up with a sequence to see what happened.
I believe since he's going to the Russian Front which means death she will join the Resistance knowing she may die too. I feel that is a choice she made due to the circumstances of strong feelings for him.
I really felt sad he tried his best to be friendly with them not a stranger nor a solider came to take their homeland.. the way she played piano just to save him.. I think the soundtracks they used more powerful then the words.. such amazing movie but I hoped for another ending..
What a truly beautiful film. Thanks so much for sharing. This now ranks among my all time favorites. Without your subtitles, we English speakers would be deprived of this cinematic gem. Makes you wonder how many other foreign films are lost to us because of the language barrier or lack of exposure. (In fact, if any one has suggestions for must see foreign films, please do share!)
Thank you so much, It was so artistic and tragic. I feel mixed feelings. I cried, I smiled. Such pure hearts... We’re only human. Wars are a great shame for humanity.
love this movie, each time I see it I hope for a different ending....sadly none other would have been possible. How tragic this period of history was....for everyone involved.
I know this is weird to say but I would have wished to have lived through that time period. When men and women knew how to love one another and behave accordingly to what is considered proper by those standards that were set by society.
I wished it had a different ending too. That at least they would acknowledge their love for each other and had a brief encounter to justify their strong feelings. However, that would only make it worse?
Angela Carleton. No, it would’ve made it better, and I think he would not have felt such despair and would not have gotten reassigned to the Russian front. That part is incredibly unbelievable, because he knew she had saved his life. And I believe upon knowing her feelings for him, he would never have asked to go to the Russian front. It’s not that he might not have survived their. He was an officer and he may have survived the Russian front, but to leave the characters hanging the way they did in this movie is just not realistic, imho. With this much intense love such as they felt , it would have been impossible for them not to embrace and kiss. Impossible! Impossible!
@@bookwormdoe1522 I agree with you. This movie is based on a resistance novel,so that makes it impossible for the characters to be together. But I believe that in real life they would have kissed and I find it hard to believe someone could be in the same house and not speak with someone for months. Even when some hated the wehrmacht and the SS during ww2 they had to speak to them from time to time,at least of basic or trivial matters.
When I see the parting of these two souls it's as if the hurt is so intense you feel it. I cry for the senseless wars and horrors that followed all those people living at that time.
Thank you, Celia Torres, for uploading this film and adding the sub-titles on those not knowing French. It made sense of what each scene took place. How I wished she had let him into her room just to give him a hug and perhaps a kiss. This film shows how true is "hate" turns into "love."
Thank you for adding the English subtitles. I loved this movie. I longed for her to reply to him at the end. The Captain was so handsome and said so much with his eyes.
Thank you so much for uploading and adding the english subtitles! I'm so glad that I found this beautiful film. The tension, the music and that bitter-sweet ending have totally moved my heart...
Thank you, Celia, for adding the english captions. I loved the story so much though i hoped for a different ending. So sad how war can divide us all. Thanks again!
Sad and beautiful at the same time. It leaves a poignant note at the end, as the first word she spoke to him was goodbye. That despite being that man in uniform, he had humanity. Unrequited love is indeed both pure and painful. This reminded me of A Summer Story. The saddest part of the movie was when Werner said that there is no hope at all and that everything he said in that house must be forgotten. I can only imagine what Jeanne would feel in the years to come, wondering what became of Werner.
I don't think she could feel different towards him. However, she knew his future and in some strange way fighting with the Resistance would be preferable than a life without him?
Such a touching and beautiful movie.. two beautiful people expressed their strong love to each other in silence..ending is so sad... Werner felt so hopeless in his emotion about the meaning of the war and future of his love, he chose an exit to death by going to Russia
i'm glad i was able to watch this, and to find others of this genre as well, lately i've been into world war dramas and its just so...addicting, the characters, the stories, this one is my favorite hands down, not much has been spoken but looks are enough to convey their inner most feelings, thank you for the english subtitles. i do not understand it but french is truly a beautiful language

This movie gets even more beautiful every time I see it. Oh, Jeanne. I just want to shake her & tell her that she absolutely cannot let Werner walk out of her life. He's the kind of man you fight for & hold on to, no matter what. I need a Captain von Ebrennac in my life.
Watched this movie a few years ago and watched it again today. Always such a great watch. Based on a French book called le silence de la mer by Vercors. It was translated in english and the book is called "Put out the light" shortest book I've ever read but all that beautiful story was said in those few pages.
What a beautiful movie! A hidden gem. Some real good French movies/TV movies make me think about their characters and dialogs, days after watching. Or I even dream at night. Hollywood movies are shallower and depend on special effects. Hollywood comedies are good after you have a long day of work, you laugh when you watch it, and you forget all about it the next day. Special effect movies like Star Wars are good but now have become annoying.
If there is one thing I noticed after watching so many European Films - they are down to earth - a lot of people don't have fancy clothes nor are their houses full of nice furniture - because they don't put so much emphasis on material possessions. At one movie that was a comedy and a tear-jerker - "Cinema Paradiso" I have never laughed so hard and cried as much too. If you get a chance watch it.
It brings into focus the subtleness of this fine movie that "love" is more than just a physical feeling but is real within our senses to behold an accept.
At wartime we have not a choice, for example, the people send to camps or to Siberia. At this time was the millions real tragic, sad stories. But what happens now -? How many choices we have:? This movie is beautiful.
I first watched this back in 2004 maybe or 2005 subbed. It made me read about the book and watch the 1949 version but could hardly understand a thing because it had no English subtitles and it totally made me wonder whether Vercors had enough love in him. Although I do not know if it was originally written in the book but, in the 1949 one, at the end, the uncle (in the 2004 a grandpa!) gave Von Ebrennac a paper or a piece out of a newspaper where it said something like 'it is okay to disobey a criminal or a crime'! Vercors's message was to be realistic and stay loyal to one's duty and commitment towards her/ his country and no matter how good, respectful and loving is your enemy, even compared to your compatriot, he remains an enemy and you cannot do anything about it when he's overcome with despair and loses hope because well, he's the enemy and that is how life is and that is just the reality. Well, hope is just as real as war and giving someone hope even to an enemy is also a duty but, Von Ebrennec was not an enemy although he represented one. Sorry but it is quite bizarre and unrealistic to say she loved him dearly yet, she allowed him to dispair even more and become suicidal enough to ask to be sent to the Eastern Front. You notice in this version, that he waited till the end for something from her but, got absolutely nothing. No. She did not love him enough, sorry.
@@МайраЖумагулова-х4ю I've finally read the book and watched a subbed version of the 1949 movie a few months ago. I can still say, both the uncle (grandpa, here) and the niece's show of love and kindness come too little, too late. After he finally realises the truth behind the Nazi occupation and before returning to their home, von Ebrennac becomes hopeless, rather suicidal and asks to be reposted to a fighting unit. All in the name of duty according to Vercors.
I can't help thinking that had his departure for the Russian front not been immediate, had he spent one more night at the house, after informing them he was going to leave, she wouldn't have been able to resist not going to his room that night. She would have tried her best, but then she would have surrendered to her feelings.
You're welcome! Yes, you're so right... now I'm willing to add english subtitles to the film "También la lluvia(Even the rain)" which I think is a very interesting film and I like it very much also. Greetings.
We just saw a French thriller movie called Talk to animals and it's very good. So many twists and turns. Super suspenseful and surprisingly enlightening. Reminds us not to assume as the truth is usually stranger than fiction.

Yeah, that’s true but we’re all suckers for a hopeful happy endings as usual. It wouldn’t be a masterpiece if they got together. Although the flower pot could mean hope or she joined the resistance.
Ugh! This movie tugs at your heart. Did you see Resistance? It's similar story-- a group of Nazis occupy a Welsh town and one of them falls in love with a woman in the village. Stars Tom Wlaschia and Andrea Riseborough. Good movie. Thanks
For those interested in one of the film locations, Google Map Tusson, France. You will recognize the street area around Rue Rose, the Town Hall, the building used as the German Headquarters, the Church, and alley where the Gestapo made their arrest.

Part 2--by the fire outside, Werner would have been with his friends, when she fell asleep. Then, as she heard Warners footsteps coming down the stairs, she would have started playing to stop him. Then she would’ve warned him verbally, but as he rushes to the door, the car blows up. He has no ill will towards her, but in the end he says he must leave. The last scene before he leaves is when they express their love towards each other, a tender kiss, a warm embrace. She would’ve asked him where he’s going, and he would’ve told her, and it would not have been the Russian front. He would have asked her if she would wait for him., that he would come back for her at the end of the war. The last scene of the movie is her working in her garden with some sadness, some months after the war. Then, Werner appears in the sunlight with a cane, as she leaps to her feet with joy and runs to him embracing each other as the music and scene pans out and away. Neat ending huh.....:)
NO. A happy ending would have not made the film that it is. She could have said she is sorry, maybe loves him, and he might have asked her to wait, will come back, both of them knowing that won't happen. Sad endings make a much more powerful movie. Remember "Gone with the Wind?" It is the ending that added the final punch.
The writer was French. He was writing about the French patriotism. He would never let his heroine to do such a thing. The officer was a high-born Nazi. He would have to kill French if he was ordered to. BTW, German soldiers were not allowed to have relationship with non-German women in the countries they were occupying. I am talking about relationship, not one-time sexual encounters. If the two had had a physical and romantic relationship, he would have been transferred to the Russian front right away. She would have been labelled as a "collaborator" and would have been punished after the war ended.
Did you know there is a story in which a wife went to war during the Civil War and fought with him? She didn't' want to be left behind. So they were both in the war. There were complications to how this story I mentioned about the wife and husband fighting in the war. However, that's how strong some women's love is.

Im crying so much right now. Again, Thank You for the english subs! This movie reminds me a lot of Suite Francaise. I love that movie❤
I cried again and I've seen it more than 10 times this past week. So glad I stumbled upon this movie on "RUclips."
yes - that is a good movie too
True love 💕 speaks with the eyes 👀 beautiful movie💕💕💕
Waaaa thanks for the lack of closure! 😢😭 Loved this movie. War is the worst!
thanks for allowing me a better understanding for such a great film
greetings from Tunisia
You really need to tell someone you love them because you will regret it in the end.
Thank you so much for the English subtitle, it is such a sweet story👍❤
Somebody tear me away from this film, I can't recover...bui-sette! lol!
This movie is haunting in that you want their story to have a better ending, but everything was against them. So sad.
The captain loves flowers..
What a beautiful movie
like this film very much
The best actor I have ever seen !
This is so sad!!! Wish there was an alternate ending! They need to be together!
Thanks for the subtitles
Beautiful!!
Она его любила и не позволила ему выйти, задержав его из-за музыки. Может ему командование дало приказ идти на фронт. И у него не было выхода.
I love this movie.. beautiful
thank you..wish it had more episodes..
Extremely powerful acting all three acted superb. Is their any movies like this? please let me know.
can you believe I watched three times already. I loved their pure feeling & love. Do they speaks franch or German laungvage?
Suite française is a very similar movie to this
There is also The Exception
Its too sad loving someone from afar :(
Loving someone but you have no choice but to set aside that feeling
of yours for the benefit of everybody
A movie so sad, my heart breaks by the ending.
No problem, you're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the film!
Mil gracias por los subtitulos!
Atleast they could hug each other for one last time 😞
I would have accepted a handshake if nothing else but that was too hard for both.
I can't help thinking that had his departure for the Russian front not been immediate, had he spent one more night at the house, after informing them he was going to leave, she wouldn't have been able to resist not going to his room that night. She would have tried her best, but then she would have surrendered to her feelings.
Это точно!!!! Тогда может он и остался бы... Возможно они смогли бы уехать куда -нибудь.
❤️ similar to suite francaise..just pure unspoken love❤️ united and separated by war..
Merveilleux!!!
You're welcome! Yes, you're so right... now I'm willing to add english subtitles to the film "También la lluvia(Even the rain)" which I think is a very interesting film and I like it very much also. Greetings.
Love this movie.
Ils étaient tellement en amour mais c'était la guerre mondiale.
Nice to hear that, greetings from Paraguay!
너무 슬프다. 절제된 모든 감정들이 더 아련하게 만듦.
How much pride!
We just saw a French thriller movie called Talk to animals and it's very good. So many twists and turns. Super suspenseful and surprisingly enlightening. Reminds us not to assume as the truth is usually stranger than fiction.
Thank you very much! 谢谢!
EU AMO ESTE FILME, TENHO GRAVADO, JÁ VI MAIS DE 20 VEZEZ, ACHO TUDO LINDO, O LUGAR, A HISTORIA, MAS VAMOS COMBINAR O ALEMÃO É UM ESCANDALO. ACHO QUE DEVERIA TER CONTINUAÇÃO. EU TENHO ATÉ UM ROTEIRO. TEM QUE TER UM BEIJO DESSES DOIS. QUE DISPERDICIO.
Maybe they could have a sequel... after the war...1946-50? 🤔
J. That is an excellent idea. I wonder why they didn't think of it?
Well unfortunately he was at the Russian front which means he was certainly killed
I thought the ending was perfect. They could never be together. They knew that.
Yeah, that’s true but we’re all suckers for a hopeful happy endings as usual. It wouldn’t be a masterpiece if they got together. Although the flower pot could mean hope or she joined the resistance.
@@catherinedacera Yes indeed! Good point of view. I saw it that she joined the resistance.
Primera vez en verla hermosa peli, pero yo no lo dejaría ir 😍😘solo se vive una vez.
Lovely film. I loved it felt sorry for the officer. She joined the resistance at the end
That's what the flower on the window sill represents she joined the resistance.
Ugh! This movie tugs at your heart. Did you see Resistance? It's similar story-- a group of Nazis occupy a Welsh town and one of them falls in love with a woman in the village. Stars Tom Wlaschia and Andrea Riseborough. Good movie. Thanks
if only that car window hadn’t been between them when she said “adieu”. Just wishful thinking ❤️❤️🥰
For those interested in one of the film locations, Google Map Tusson, France. You will recognize the street area around Rue Rose, the Town Hall, the building used as the German Headquarters, the Church, and alley where the Gestapo made their arrest.
But I can't find Jeanne's house and the fishing dock on Google Maps. any idea where they are?
@@emmabarr6871 Hello Emma, I just saw your email. I could not find any other locations where they filmed either. If you do find more, please post them for those of us who are interested. Janet
@@janetwarner2002 The scenes close to the ocean were filmed around Royan in the region of les Charentes-Maritimes.
For those looking for a similar film to this watch Suite Francaise, it is a beautiful film.
Please write a fanfiction
Yes....please do. Nothing too sugary. Keep it on edge.
It needs to wind around a little more subtle tones.
This was a really haunting ending....but don't we all long for something that brings closure and hope? Especially in love...
if I was that girl I would go with him in the war and die together. OMG they really loved each other so much
The writer was French.
It was said tehy were soul mates and their best communication was through their music.
