Everything he does endears him to her which is why she starts to fall in love with him. Someone said he was a better piano player than her? He should be because he's a professional musician and composer but Jeanne is just a teacher, of music not quite in the same league as he is but there is passion in her piano playing too. That's perhaps why he played "Bach - Prelude which he told her was his favorite on Christmas Eve. I loved that he played that tune to show her how much he loved her to repeat that first tune he heard when he came to stay there.

I noticed the differences between her play and his too. His play is more soft which showed his true feelings about her.

I watched the original video of which I own a copy of, it is clearer than the clips. In the very beginning the back plate does have the SS symbol on it, not regular German Army which Werner was a part of. Later when he offers her a ride in his car, the back is the WH plate same as the front. Perhaps it was a simple mistake or the car may have been assigned to either division? Just my guess.

I’ve been thinking about this scene and my first question is why was he returning to the house? Was he following her home determined to confront her about her feelings he knows she is hiding? His car enters the yard at a fast pace as if he is trying to catch up with her. He hears her screaming only to find her being assaulted by a young man he doesn’t know. Is Pascal a former lover, friend or stranger? I suspect he stills feels the sting of Jeanne’s rejection at the fishing dock and now someone else has his hands on her. He walked past her trying not to show his anger and disappointment, but he stops to check that she is alright. The jealousy is felt when he slams his door. Just my thoughts.

The Captain is an intriguing character. We see him with fine manners, well educated and a composer who plays the piano beautifully. His love for Jeanne seems sincere and deep. He could have “taken” her anytime he wanted to with no consequences to him, but he respects her. He is not that kind of man. He wants her to love him, not hate him.
As an officer, his uniform tells us he has been battle tested and shown courage, leadership and success in conflict. Twice.
He has been awarded the Iron Cross second class, (the colored ribbon by his button) and the Iron Cross First class which was one of the highest awards given by the German Wehrmacht. He wears the black Iron Cross on his left pocket. He is a force to be reckoned with, but he is also kind, considerate and loving! I’m sure German women fell at his feet, but Jeanne’s resistance may be what he finds so attractive about her. My perception only.

I think it pulled on her maternal instincts to see this German officer helping this child while the child's father didn't do anything to help his son? Interesting to see the differences. She was gradually falling for him but I believe it hit home how much he was genuinely very much like himself outside like he was inside the house where he stayed with this small family.

No woman would consent to marry someone who tried to molest her. She was never interested in him. He was put in the movies as a contrast to Werner. German vs French, Enemy vs Family (Pascal was a cousin of Jeanne's),respecting and value a women as a human being, vs forcing oneself onto to regardless of her feelings.
