Some people complained why the male actor did not get awards while the female actor earned "France's best actor of the year". I think he was really lovely and ideal for female audience. He acted so well. I loved it when he spoke German. And he did not speak French like a French-born, it made the movie even better. But the female's part was more difficult. She had almost no word; therefore her performance was even more brilliant.
Hana - I felt the same way he should have gotten the best actor award for his acting which was excellent and still was vulnerable when determining what to do? I was so upset I wanted her to talk to him give him encouragement or say something he could figure out. The problem she didn't know what to say but realized he was dealing with so much pressure and those friends were not helping him.
@Hana for Success I was wondering about his french speaking skill. We can't tell whether he spoke french with an accent. Thank you for clarifying that.
This is not an ordinary romance! It was during the war and french people had to host german soldiers who were their enemies! It was not easy for them! But I really liked their performance! They have feelings for each other but it is not allowed to show them! Spite they do not have sex or even a conversation, I have never seen such a sensual scene like the one he puts his hand on the back of the couch she is sitting on Christmas Eve! Excellent film!!! 👏👏👏
If anybody doesn't believe there is a God, you just have to look at one of his most magnificent creations, Thomas Jouannet. .As a woman, I will never be the same...
*It had been a long time since I saw such a good movie, a first-rate performance and direction, I congratulate the actors and the director, thank you for being there.*
Beautiful movie but very sad ending. She did not speak to him.,until the end when she was not able to hide her feelings anymore and started to cry.If this had been real life there would have been only regrets for her .
Angela Casey - I think the book was based on true events. There’s been many fictional movies created though....but the book was real life events during WW2.
I had watched this movie several years ago..and loved it.. JUST RE DISCOVERED IT AGAIN SOO SAT UP HALF THE NIGHT REWATCHING IT !got to admit ( IM BRITISH ) and find many foreign actors much more attractive , handsome and very very charming and masculine !,
I have to laugh because she bumped into him and he said nothing. It was so appealing that he can still maintain his gentlemanly ways while she can be a bit brutal in her disposition with him. LOL
Je suis d'accord sauf le choix de Galabru!! Franchement je ne l'ai pas aimé du tout : peut-être trop vieux et trop gras ; j'aurais préféré un papy plus pur ; il était trop fade !!
I love this type of movie. A young handsome military officer has an eye for this young woman. She should be nice to him. I wish the ending was they both get married and immigrate to another country.
If you notice she felt an attraction but was fighting it - even bumping into him in the kitchen he still remained a gentleman or when she passed him on her bike - you can see questions in his mind but realized what these people were going through wasn't easy for all the French people to have to put residence for these Germans.
It was the war. They were the enemy. Actually, horrible ones. They were some decent Germans but I still remember that my father in Marseille lost his best friend 18 years old shot by the Germans in the hills. The French women who slept with the Germans had their heads shaven at the end of the war. Personally, I think it was disgusting because not every French person was a resistant. There was a lot of disgusting things happening in France, especially, the deportation of Jews with the help of the French police forces. But the movie is beautiful 😍
@@sharyncarr4279 I thought I was the only one who noticed he actually smiled a little when he saw her! And he looked at her more than the grandfather when he introduced himself to them. But he was glancing at the grandfather one or three times out of respect.

Yep, I think they both have a connection the moment he introduced himself to them. He already loved her for playing Bach. He appreciated the beautiful welcoming of music he heard.
@@emmabarr6871 He later tells Jeanne about the music He heard when he first saw her. That Bach is his favorite and then he later plays piano for her and stops at the exact same moment as she did when Werner arrived and later wishes her a good Christmas. They had a connection with the music. It's very subtle but Werner had a slight smile when he saw her for the first time. If you pay close attention you can notice it.
Thinking about other places, other people: the occupation of Gaza by the Israelis, the occupation of the Americas by the English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, ETC.!
He was so nice and they treated him so mean. I can't understand they loved each other but never spoke one word to each other. If they could have had at least one kiss or one sexual encounter it would have been worth watching but as it were I felt I waisted my time. I don't understand it was just a waist of my time to watch.
1) It was written this way in the novel that inspired this movie 2) After the war, women who had relationships with germans during the occupation were publically shamed. This is not some romance story about a forbidden love. The novel was written during the war to reflect a situation that could be realistic.
Katherine love is not so convenient like a box of chocolates wrapped up in pretty ribbons. It is messy, confusing and both were dealing with emotions because of the "strong attraction" they both had for each other. Then you throw in the opposition of that jerk of a cousin that wants only to screw her - I hate that guy and the pressure he was faced to deal with French Resistance and keeping the peace. A lot is added to the movie that is not brought up. He was a bit naive because he had an optimistic view of what can happen. He later learned it wasn't what he thought after all. He felt shattered in realizing his friends were thinking differently than him which added more to his confusion. To a degree this is reality - nothing is perfect despite our wants.
When she threw caution aside when he said he was leaving, he should have embraced her. The director needed to not leave her standing there, and it made no sense she would join the resistance AT ALL, especially after witnessing that murder. She also should have just told him what she saw to prevent more deaths. Why did he leave? Guilt? That accomplishes nothing. BUT the writer could have sent him away, but he could have written a scene where he showed up at the end of the war, standing with a cane, and yes, they could have left to live in Switzerland perhaps.

That's true since all her feelings and emotions were through her eyes and manners - that isn't easy to perform.

He appears to be from an aristocratic family. He is very refined, handsome and courteous.
Amy desiree at the time, the majority -Germany- of the career military officers came from aristocratic families
His last name is Von Ebrennac. The prefix "von" indicates that he comes from an aristocratic family. Hereditary military, as he mentioned 🙂

Celia where can I get a DVD copy of this version 2004 in color of this movie? Can't locate it except the old one and I prefer this version.
