Fun Fact. Air Vents are usually made with Galvanized Metal which means it has a layer of Zinc. Homelander cannot see through Zinc which is why he couldn't see Hughie
Edit: for all the people asking why Homelander couldn't hear him or smell him or something, I just stated the fact That Homelander can't see through Zinc and Air Vents have Zinc. Homelander not being able to Hear Hughie could be because of the rehearsal of the music group which had loud music or because of simply Hughie's Plot Armor

Straight plot armor that he survived
Homelander couldn't see Hughie, because ventilation pipes are usually coated in zinc; furthermore, it's hard to hear a guy crawling through a pipe beneath all the noise of the Vought on Ice performance: Homelander's super hearing is not really selective, it's just amplified, so he couldn't just pick out the noises Hughie was making and pinpoint his exact position through all that noise pollution and echo.
Of course there is a degree of plot armor here, but the situation is beliavable and, at the end of the day, it does still make sense.

Smell - Lots of people around. Even if he smelled Hughie, it was a stretch to believe he was there.
He could have gone faster trying to get Hughie but he was blinded by rage and by literal zinc. He probably thought Hughie teleported. For all he knows, Hughie is still a sup.

The Zinc thing make sense but still.... He can just move those lasers much faster the whole length of the pipe. Also his super hearing would definitely pin point Hughie's location. Maybe hughie is secrectly the worlds first natural superhero and his power is incredible luck in life threatening scenarios. maybe he was supposed to die to A-train all along lol

I've heard a few people saying, there is a reference in the books that the pipes were made of Zinc, so homelander couldn't see through them.
Usually he’s able to detect stuff when he’s paying attention. He wasn’t expecting someone to sneak through the vents so he didn’t notice until he felt the sweat.

Also if he wanted to kill the Boys so badly, he should've found them and zap them in Ep 1, after speaking to Billy. He should know that where Billy is, his team is always near. In Season 1, they had to go to the entire trouble of blowing up vans as distraction to escape from him, in S4 it feels so... underwhelming. All characters have f*cking plot armor set to max stats.
