I think a reason why the pandemic ruined things for brands is because we all took the time to get educated on what to (not) use and who to get it from.

I think, in general, people just have less disposable income. In 2020, people lost their jobs and government stimulus was temporary. Now in 2022, inflation and rate increases mean people have to be smarter with their money. I know I used to spend a lot on skincare and makeup but I can't justify it now when my weekly grocery bill is up by 40%, and I consider myself comfortably middle-class. When you take spending money away the majority of the population, business suffers. It's inevitable.

@@VintageAlien Yeah I think that's the real reason. Skincare is a luxury unless you have a serious skin condition that hinders your daily life so it's usually the first thing that went when people's budgets became tight. Also the fact that people started going out less (and if they did they wore masks) probably also made people focus less on skincare in general. I don't think it's much of "education" because none of these brands have bad ingredients or anything, they're mostly just overpriced for what they are

So true, though I have loved Glossier for many, many years. They just have a great mix of ‘natural’ skincare products that are certainly staples (like the cloud blush and boy brow). They do need a brand image revamp, for sure, though they haven’t grown with the industry and that could be their demise. I have to remember I am at the older end of the Millennial generation and they definitely play towards a younger demographic (not to mention racial issues within the company). 🥺

The problem is that they didn't disclose the products contained steroids AND they had more than the allotted prescription strength they were allowed.

I was speaking to one of their staff at a counter recently and they were told they're to push the sprays and mascaras, they don't expect to do well in any other areas.
Yes their sprays are OK, but they smell awful and there's other setting sprays on the market that work just as well, at similar prices or less. I think if within the next year there's a "viral" setting spray from a big brand that actually is popular (not just tiktok), they will be in trouble.

I don't want to spend long doing my makeup, and I won't do much touching up during the day typically. If I do touch up, it needs to be something I can apply quickly wherever I am. A lot of their makeup is great for mature users. I do notice, though, that they don't have cool colors in their eye makeup. I was happy when they came out with the matte liquid eyeshadow, sounded perfect for me, but there's only one color (brown) that works for someone who wants a cool tone. And they never added to the color range. At this point, my main loyalty to Glossier is that I can't find another mascara that goes on quickly without being clumpy, and doesn't smudge or flake off all day. All these brands have one thing in common IMO; they all seem gimmicky. Especially Glossier & Glamglow! Glossier was made for white girls with great skin & Glamglow as you said seems SO outdated!! There has been a massive movement towards "clean beauty" and "soft life" styles in the last few years and none of these brands fit that.

Glossier was very clearly a "young, thin, pale, rich" type of brand. As a mid-millenial who was 27 at the time and quite pudgy, it was very clear that it wasn’t for ME. It was for naturally thin, stereotypically "pretty" girls. They didn't even have pigments I could use for years, and I'm barely at the medium/tan section of most cosmetic lines.
    Edited for typos.

Idk I disagree and weight doesn't matter in this case because it's makeup not clothes. I'm a fat and black woman and found the glossier products that look good on me. It's definitely not only for a certain type of person and being from a certain demographic shouldn't make anyone feel like we're "not allowed" to wear this or that. We should just wear what we want. I will say though that they could definitely expand their concealer and foundation shades.

In the 1980s, Prescriptives came on the scene with the biggest innovations in skin care and makeup. They were the first to launch a product called Line Preventor with hyaluronic acid in it. The entire skin care line was beautiful and worked. They introduced the color wheel and divided all the make up into 4 undertones to get both natural day time and stunning night times looks. They introduced custom made powders and foundations. Then MAC hit the market and over took the line with its custom lipsticks and endless shadow shades. Prescriptives is still available online and I highly recommend Line Preventor as a stellar serum. Both lines are owned by Lauder which I suppose has the financial ability to keep even a small amount of Prescriptives available to a loyal client base.
I think most of these new releases are not meant to make it for the long haul, especially the celebrity lines. They are short term trendy money grabs. We users who are serious about our skin care and make up expect more. Thank you James for having the insight and the ability to analyze both new and older products for us.

I have heard insane stories about the company not allowing employees to take a prayer break as this was apart of their religious practice…many many of their in-store editors were POC while corporate team were majority white. They love to put upfront that they “care” about inclusivity but behind doors, employees are not treated with respect at all!! If you have been to the NYC location then you would know the high stress situation that the employees are under, while trying to display a brand image because it’s the flagship store…the amount of times customers can just be blatantly rude, but employees had to tolerated it..

From what I can remember, the early success of Glossier is inextricably tied to Into the Gloss, the beauty blog Emily Weiss started back in 2010. ITG was my favorite beauty community for years, and I was active in the comments, but it's seemingly been winding down for a long time now. Starting in about 2019, I would notice that my comments sometimes wouldn't post, and ITG itself hasn't updated since June of this year. It's really too bad; I got so many great recommendations from the other commenters. Very Good Light seems to be stepping into the void ITG left behind, though: one of ITG's most beloved writers is even VGL's editorial director!
As to Glossier itself, I think the issue is that they were cutting-edge for a very long time, but others have since emerged into what is now a much more competitive market. For example, Glossier's Milky Jelly cleanser and serum trio snapped everyone's attention when they first came out, but you can find super-gentle, skin-conditioning cleansing gels from a lot of different brands nowadays, and The Ordinary functionally makes dupes for all of those serums. Combine that with the serious missteps you laid out in the video (+ the short-lived Glossier Play), and you get a brand in a tricky place.
Fortunately for Glossier, some of their products actually are really good: Boy Brow and Cloud Paint, for instance, are still cult classics for a reason, and After Baume is a genuinely good alternative to Vaseline for slugging. I think Glossier just needs to plug back into its community-maybe try reviving ITG-and address (or re-address-it's been a while) the concerns you've laid out above.
Then again, they'll be sold in Sephora starting next year, so maybe they're planning a revival then. 🤷🏼‍♀

If you start a small brand that perfectly captures the moment and innovates it can be hard to pivot when styles change. If you are lucky you become a classic (Doc Martens). If you have design resources you can reinvent yourself. But other brands just rise and fall on one trend.

These brands' biggest mistakes were relying on the huge skincare fad of 2019-2020 instead of bringing out reliable, classic products.During that time period, people were blindly eating up every skincare product on their fyp/feed, if a "skinfluencer" said they liked a product, or it had a "trendy" ingredient, it would be sold out at Sephora, Ulta, Mecca, Douglas, or whatever store is popular in your country by the next day. These brands started pushing out half-assed skincare marketed with whatever ingredient was in at the time, or duping already classic products. But then people started actually researching skincare, listening to dermatologists and cosmetic chemists, and not just eating up everything influencers say.The demand changed from 10-step routines with lots of trendy products that were switched up immediately after being emptied or even sooner, to a few reliable things with mindful active combinations, that preserved the skins health, and could be used for long periods of time.People want staples, and these brands never catched up on that.

They liked the more natural look. Meanwhile, I've got enough makeup to open my own Sephora - lol! I happened to try the foundation and now it's one of my favorites for an everyday natural look. Granted I take pretty good care of my skin ( clearly thanks to James!), but it is buildable if you need heavier coverage. It's actually young and glowy looking. I would encourage older woman to give it a try! The bronzer is also a must have for me. The bkush was a fave for a while, but Rare Beauty is just so gorgeous it's my go to now!

Glossier is a good case study on how going all-in on one particular aesthetic and failing to change is not a good idea. I accompanied a friend to their store in NYC at its peak and it was really all about bathing in that zeitgeisty millennial pink, bougie, minimal aesthetic rather than the products. (That said, I recently got my first Glossier product, the Balm Dotcom in birthday cake, and actually really like it.)
And to James's point, as an elder millennial, I was always turned off by their marketing. It seemed like a brand for the cool, kinda mean chick in your high school.

Glossier honestly never was a priority for me because, exactly like you said, it's skincare/makeup for people who dont need it. My severely acneic face wasn't going anywhere near it back in the day 😅 and now that my skin is clear, I either don't put anything on or just use a sheered out version of my previous makeup anyways

Sis looked FED UP not gunna lie, but she saved my coin so thanks!

Then after watching this review I thought who is this whatever with fingernail polish on tryna give GlamGlow the business about using the word glam and being about celebrities when he reviews celebrity brands? Please.

I came across some old GlamGlow when I did a recent clean out and had the same thought, I really don't see it advertised anymore. I thought it was expensive for what it is actually and the only reason I had it was because my daughter liked it at one time. I have always used Borghese Fango clay mask myself, it's great for occasional acne flareups or use it just on a single pimple. The next day all the redness and inflammation is gone. I spot treat before bed and it works great.

I actually think Glossier’s product will have a market in Asia since Asians tend to like natural makeup. Couple of years ago when I was into full makeup and got their mascara I was SUPER disappointed. But now that I want minimal makeup (my lash but better look) I actually find that it is the BEST mascara I’ve ever used as it gives the cleanest look ever! I actually think I’ll repurchase again……

I also wanted to say thank you to James as I'm so early in the comments today. I'm an adult that had pretty much stopped expecting over the counter skin care to do much, because none of my trial sizes from Clinique or Estee Lauder had any effect on anything, and weren't they the best?? There's a couple of skin care brands that should fade away but likely have too many resources for that to happen.

I agree. But not all people are lucky enough to be able to go out into the world barefaced. I’ve had many friends who suffered terrible acne or other issues, and just didn’t feel comfortable without wearing makeup.
I always secretly wondered if their heavy makeup might not have exacerbated those issues, and felt bad about that trap in which they got themselves, simply because we live in a world where “bad skin” is treated as some sort of celestial punishment and indicative of “badness,” per se. Horribly unfair.

    God, I fucking love you.
It’s not just the factual stuff, the skin care, the integrity…
It’s that you are so fucking FUNNY. I love your editing choices, the fact you keep in stuff many would delete - “this fucking fly” - and you are simply gifted with gab.
Sometimes I just keep your posts playing just to listen to your voice. You are adorable. Simply adorable.
I don’t know anything much about skincare, I was born with perfect skin and can count on one hand the number of blemishes I’ve had in my life that actually required coverup. Trust me, I know how lucky I am in that regard. Even aging has treated me well; I’m 54 now, and honestly, I avoid makeup because it EMPHASISES my little lines.
That’s the biggest issue I have, really: I’d love to wear makeup more often, but it just never looks right - and I’m a former actress, I know how to apply makeup.
Maybe there’s something I ought to be doing that I don’t know about… But tinted primer is so much more attractive than base - let alone powder. And eye makeup, ugh - how I long to do a cat eye or smoky eye… but it looks crap on me.
Any hints about that, or should I go see your brother for that? 😂
Anyway… I’ve been a subscriber for at least a year or more (changed accounts and yours was the first channel to which I subscribed with the new one), and just wanted to drop in and TELL you just how beloved you are to me - (I’ve been stuck in bed for years, mostly, due to MS, but a new medication has been miraculously opening up my world) and there aren’t that many people on YT that I genuinely love listening to, so… thank you. 💖

What’s funny is that I’m an elder millennial and I feel like I was too old for Glossier. They got me for a cloudpaint duo, but they honestly aren’t my favorite liquid blush formula or colors. I also tried their skin tint once and just laughed because it was the sheerest product I have ever seen. I do like a natural look, but I need a little something more than the barest whisper of pigment.

Omg I’ve worked for Starbucks for over 6 years and the collaboration with Ariana Grande was the most ridiculous thing ever. It was the cloud macchiato. For ppl that do not know (bc I only found out bc of work) Ariana is a vegan and the drink she apparently work with Starbucks on was NOT vegan. It was a huge thing with her fans apparently and she supposedly she just said get it with nondairy . But if homegirl actually did help with the collob or at least did her homework she would know that would NOT make the drink vegan. And that in fact “her drink” could NOT become vegan. This is because the cloud part of the cloud macchiato had a light lemon meringue taste that no other drink had, which was created by blending a flavour powder into the foam. The powder contained eggs whites…. So even if a someone changed all the milk and everything it would just be a regular macchiato bc they couldn’t have the cloud part or whatever. I was never a huge Ariana Grande fan but I did think of her being a good person and respected her growth and talent. But this made me lose a lot of it. How can she tell her fans she vegan and not even know that her collob isn’t vegan? Her drink should just have been entirely vegan to begin with. It’s like she’s getting ppl to do her assignments and just slapping her name in it, not even knowing what it was about. It really made me see her in a different light. I still truly believe she’s talented, works hard, and is genuine, but takes short cuts and doesn’t put her heart into everything she does. Made me think twice about buying any of her products.
Basically I’m trying to say bc of all this I am not surprise to hear about what’s going on with her make up 🙃
    Love your videos ♥️ xoxo
