    The beauty of using 300 mm is that you get to capture the surrounding, like the branches, leaves and all greenery in bokeh, which imo looks pretty good and gives a bit more detail to the photo.

    • @jeroenvdw
      @jeroenvdw 3 месяца назад

      Nah I had a Tamron 150-500 and even at 500mm the birds usually were too small in the frame. If you have a lens that can go as far as 600mm you will still get leaves, branches etc in the frame. 600mm +1.4tc is probably best for these birds. Or trying to get much closer with less then that.

  • @Whittmike2011
    @Whittmike2011 Год назад +15

    For small song birds, You can generally multiply the lens by 0.05 to get your distance. 300 X 0.05 = 15 Feet is a good limit to keep in mind!

    I tried wildlife photography as a hobby and I had bad experiences all three times I went out. What happened was I had two very bad boar encounters, during day, where I had to climb a tree and wait - and if you know anything about animals, you know that the chances of you encountering a boar during day is near 0%. The third time I went out, I went to my countries mountainside and not even two minutes after I parked my car and started walking further up into the mountain, I had a bear encounter and I barely managed to scare it away, I basically thought ''this is it,'' that's how bad it was. Thing is, going off the official conservation center data of my country, there are only 80-100 bears left in my country, so the chances of me running into one were non existent. I believe that if I went out the fourth time I would have encountered a Godzilla or something... I guess the world was trying to tell me that I should get the hell back into town and stick to portraits and weddings... Either I'm too good at finding animals or my camo was just too awesome, haha...

    So a little late to the game in responding here but for what it's worth... I had two trips to Europe, northern Portugal and Madeira in 2022 and Southern Spain in 2023, and used my 70-300 l on a Canon R and it did well. Maybe not as ideal as my 400 on the r7 but good enough to get images I was happy with. Now my most recent trip to France a few months ago and an upcoming trip to Sicily I am taking the rf 100-500 and its so much easier for birds. All this to say 300 is not ideal but not impossible for bird photography. And great video. Will definitely be following your channel.

    Just got your channel recommended and I love your narrating style! So comfy to watch! :)
    Towards the question at the end; I tend to use a Sigma 150-600, but with enough camoflage, tons of patience and the silent shutter of my nikon z5 a 105mm macro lens does magic with small birds.

    Beautiful shots and the sounds of the songbirds singing is really nice. Your outfit to hide from the wildlife is very interesting and seems to work! I’m Swedish, also, but I have never lived there . My grandmother was from a town in the very far north part of Sweden. She used to speak the Swedish language all the time when I was growing up and when she spoke English you could hear her Swedish accent. I don’t mind if you do not always know the English word for birds. She was very loving, generous, and hard worker. She immigrated to the U.S. as a child and moved to Gothenburg, Nebraska. Anyway, I enjoy your RUclips channel and I like wildlife photography, also.

    Thanks for the video. The thing about shooting bird photography is yes, luck has something to do with it but being patient is the biggest skill is patients! With patients and the ability to keep still as possible is a virtue. Your positioning is also something to consider. Laying on the ground or getting as close to the ground as possible is critical.
    The dirtier you get by laying on the ground the more you'll blend in with your surroundings and the better success of getting that award winner of a shot.
    If I can suggest, look up Morton Hilmar on RUclips. On a video I watched, he was taking photos of water foul while up to his chest in water whilst the rest of the group of (not-so) professional photographers are standing on shore scared to get their toes wet. This is exactly what makes or breaks a serious/professional photographer.

    Great setting. I did feel the video needed more detail on the camera settings for this type of shoot. When walking the woods I use a 300mm lens but on a M 4/3 system, giving me a 600mm focal length equivalent. With the Panasonic G9 it's possible using the ex telconv setting to increase this to 870 mm equivalent without too much image degradation. The handheld stabilisation makes this great for quick responses or long periods of waiting for the right shot. Subscribed.

  • @johannmorrison1952
    @johannmorrison1952 7 месяцев назад

    Great video. Although the 200-600 is a very nice choice, you could also put a 2x teleconverter on a 300mm f2.8 and get a very usable 600mm f5.6. However, depending on which 300mm lens you have this might reduce the image quality or autofocus speed.

    I've done some "mild birding" recently just to get used to a 300/4 lens I had used literally once in 3 years, and honestly...sure I didn't get any fantastic shots of owls or anything, but I got some neat and rather "frame-filling" shots of a bullfinch-couple and a red-breasted robin (?).
    I think songbirds and such are a bit easier to capture at 300mm because they're used to not being terribly far from humans.
    Also being a Canon-L it's a white-ish beige lens, so...lets leave the whole "camo"-topic aside

    I have the Tamron 150-500 f5- f6.7
    Its great. Yes 600m would be really great but it is what it is. And the combination of my Sony Alpha6400 with crop and this lens is a lot of fun. What I really like about the Tamron Lens is the focus limit of just 60centimeters. So if a bird is really close I have not the struggle to focus. That is way better than at the Sony 200-600. So I dont think I will switch. And the only thing you need for good fotos is your own creativity

    I found your video because I'm using a 600mm equivalent but I often found that branches behind my subject are too intrusive. I'm shooting on Fuji X-T5 + 100-400 4.5-5.6 I was wondering if a shorter f2.8 lens could really help blurring out the background

    How did you find the 300 2.8 auto focus and tracking? I use a 300 2.8 nikkor with my d500 and sometimes a 1.4x teleconverter and it is by far my go to wildlife lens. If I can't get close enough then I include the environment. Many people just want to shoot a blue tit on a branch and a portrait, but I actually find the limitations of a prime that isn't 400mm+ to challenge you creatively.
    My main concern with the Sony line up is that there are absolutely no affordable 2.8 lenses in their line up, be it adapted, third party or otherwise. As far as I can tell Nikon and Canon have an incredible lens line up. I want the Sony AF / Tracking with a nice prime at a decent price. :)

    I have 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 which is great but consider buying something faster for lower light conditions. f/2.8 at least 300mm or f/4 at least 400mm. I dream about 400mm f2.8 or 500mm f4. But to be honest, I dont really need it.

    Hi Olle, really interesting this try. I've been using my old Sony 300mm f/2.8 SSM II with the Sony A9 at the beginnig, but I was always too short, and futhermore it doesn't work in video mode, I mean the AF, so I had to use it only in manual focus.

    • @ollenilssonen
      @ollenilssonen  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I totally feel ya. I remeber I wanted to film bears with the 300 in low light. Not a good combo😂 But focus peaking is a life saver.

    I have this lens in Canon mount. I have used it on the R6, the ibis makes it very usable. It’s ok length wise, if you used it around a feeding station you’d have gotten better results, chasing small birds around a woodland was never going to let the lens shine......................

    • @ollenilssonen
      @ollenilssonen  2 года назад +1

      That’s nice! Can imagine it performs well on Canon.
      Since it’s spring/summer birds find food elsewhere. And ai really like the challenge of it!😃

    Interesting and well presented video. I am not a subscriber but it interested me because I own the Fuji XF200f2, which in cropped terms is a 300/2.8. I have a sort-of love hate relationship with it for wildlife (which I only use it for). As a monster prime the image quality is fantastic but it is very short in terms of focal length. I get beautiful environmental photographs of small birds - the Fuji lens really draws colours beautifully and is eye-wateringly sharp BUT as you point out 300mm is too short unless you really are on top of the birds. At 100% crop I can produce a convincing 12x12 print but if I was using my 100-400 (600mm cropped equivalent) then I'd probably be able to go up to 24x16 and have a good print. My heart says its a keeper, my head says it is way too expensive for occasional use.
