A whole food, plant-based organic diet with occasional wild caught fish is known to be best for health and longevity per Valter Longo PhD, expert in human longevity. Dr. David Sinclair is another expert who says the same. It is also a lot cheaper than eating meat and dairy, avoid both because if you don't want Endometrial Cancer. I also choose to be vegan for ethical and financial reasons, mostly ethical reasons, because animals are sentient beings who feel pain just as we do. The way most animals are farmed especially those who are factory farmed, fed hormones and antipbiotics, transported and slaughtered is unacceptable if one cares about animal welfare as well as one's own health, and the environment. Dr. Mindy Pelz is keen to avoid all wheat due to pesticides. She only eats organic apples too, because conventional ones are actually unhealthy, which was news to me.
I agree and have been doing everything you say here for decades. I am 79 and have never had any health issues that require a doctor or hospital. My mother ate healthy her whole life and died at the age of 98 of Covid. I do like bread but I buy the whole grain kind. In particular I like Dave's Killer 21 grain bread. It is expensive but worth it to me. I make my own iced tea and sweeten with Stevia. The only snack items I buy are pretzel rods and tortilla chips that I use in a taco salad. I do like Bolthouse Yogurt Ranch dressing. It has 50 calories per 2 Tbsp. and is primarily buttermilk, milk, oil, cream, yogurt, pineapple juice and spices. I make homemade jam but when I purchase it I want only fruit, cane sugar, and pectin. When I make applesauce I make it with apples and their skin and use no sugar. I have used real butter my whole life. I was raised on it. As for cooking I have only myself to feed but make enough for 6 meals. Then I portion it out and put it in the freezer to eat another time. I totally agree about the so expensive foods and drinks that people buy these days, supermarkets sell such rubbish foods and drinks. Plus they taste second rate and are full of chemicals!!! Years ago none of this rubbish food existed so we ate more healthily because of this. Everything is about convenience these days but you literally pay the price health wise and financially. I cook from scratch every day now I am semi-retired as I've got the time now. I don't buy soda/ lemonade, little packets of food, pre-made meals. I love and crave sweets. Over the past year I have replaced junk food style sweets with Whole Milk Plain Greek Yogurt with a small drizzle of honey; sometimes I add berries (I keep a variety of frozen berries in my freezer i.e. blackberries, strawberries, blueberries) or a few spoonfuls of a bran based cereal (i.e. GrapeNuts or Raisin Bran) to add crunch. Makes for a great breakfast or quick treat any time of day.
I have been low carb/keto for over a year and half and everyone keeps telling me that my groceries must be so expensive now. They aren’t. Not buying all of the junk has saved me loads. I still stay within budget because of what I have cut out
Hi Sara! New follower here! You are spot on! So many reasons to cut out these foods and drinks. Thank you for calling attention to this subject. You are helping so many people! Loving your channel ❤❤❤
I have been eliminating sugar from my diet, and it basically means I can't buy ANY processed food -- man alive, they shove sugar into EVERYTHING -- frozen meals, processed meats, all kinds of grains and breads, things you don't usually associate with sugar because they aren't sweet. And you have to read the labels like a hawk: corn syrup IS sugar, as well as dextrose, glucose, fructose -- all so manufacturers can avoid saying "sugar." I feel so much better without sugar, it's worth the efffort, but it IS work to get it out of your diet.
Dr. Eric Berg has a printable list of sugars various names on a ingredients list. I do not have which youtube episode (If they call them that... I'm not that 'tech-savy", sorry) But it is on his comments. About sugars.
Hi Sara, great video! I’m 60 now and made these changes years ago. I agree with processed meats however I buy uncured bacon with no sugar and uncured organic hot dogs . I don’t think they are as unhealthy, I wish you would have mentioned that. ❤
Thanks for the ideas. I stopped drinking soda years ago.I have to avoid caffeine due to a heart rhythm problem. So I make lemonade. If you freeze the lemons, you'll get a better yield of the juice once you thaw them. I used to use 4 lemons, but now that I freeze and thaw the lemons, I use 3 large lemons to get about 8 ozs of juice ($1.46 at my grocer with tax & after senior discount) and 3/4 cup of sugar ( $0.18 for sugar on sale with senior discount & tax) and add enough water to make 2 quarts for $1.65. That's about 28 cents per serving, since my servings are about 10 ozs with ice cubes in the glass. I live in the South, and lemonade is a summer staple.
@@wendyw4023stevia isn’t an artificial sweetener, and might be a great alternative to sugar, and it doesn’t spike your blood sugar. I’ve used it for years.
I’ve had an alcohol free August and feel great. I’ve done it to drop some weight and detox my liver. I doubt very much I’ll be going back to my usual bottle from the supermarket.
I agree totally. I do not purchase any of these products. If I have a morning tea out I will usually buy a sweet with my coffee. No sugary products in my house. Only drink water, tea, or coffee. I spend money on fruits and vegies. I'm 67, with no health problems. Use minor cosmetics but treasure my rose hip oil as a moisturiser.
Sugar is my lifelong addiction. I usually have to hit a bottom of some kind to remove it. Recently cut sugar and eating 3 healthy nutritious meals usually all with some form of protein, possibly a snack. My job & commute is 12+ hrs door to door but swapped the convenient salad kits that launched better eating, to making my own salads (not a money saver but more diverse veggies). I don't make dressing but definitely a win for all the many changes including caffeine cut in half.
The store bought the peanut butter have the seed oils in it aswell. The fries that you buy at the stores still have oils on them just cut a potato up and let them soak in cold water to help get the starch out then bake or put in the airfryer.
I agree with everything that you said. And I've made those changes myself for the most part. Smart balance is a good option as well as regular butter. And I switched to plain seltzer water vs juices and sodas. For when you're in the mood for something with bubbles.
You don't even need an air fryer for frozen foods, I do mine either in my regular oven or my toaster oven with great results, have been doing it for years. I got tired of having a huge deep fryer around that just looked gross. If the item you cook it in looks that gross, imagine what it's doing to your insides! Agree on Panera, I don't think I've been there in a year. Excess sugar can also cause joint pain if you have arthritis or tissue pain if you have fibromyalgia! I cook because I have a lot of food allergies and have no choice--but I'm also not taking ANY medications for anything. I think not eating processed foods, even though it's out of necessity is a big factor.
The only one of these on this list that I buy is alcohol… that would be wine 🍷 . Plus now I drink much much less of it. Agree that processed food is ultimately more expensive and worst of all bad for your health!
I do unsweetened iced tea and juice with no added sugars, and I make my own French fries. If you don't mind some processed meat every so often, do buy nitrate free, lower sodium, premium versions, it is worth the cost. For probiotics, I take pills and they are not that expensive, and no sugar. Margarine is basically oil, better go with real butter.
I have a budget set and I do buy soda when it’s on sale Kroger has buy 2 12 packs get three free, I buy chips when they’re $1.99 a bag and I keep Gatorade when it’s 6 bottles for $3-$4.99 as a summer staple when hubby cuts yards and for when we have stomach bug, I very seldom buy snacks when they’re not on sale and my stove has a proofer, air fryer and makes awesome baked potatoes, I buy ribeye when it’s $5-$6.99 a lb, buy enough to stock up for summer and we half one ribeye as we don’t eat that much of it, eat a lot of Granny Smith apples, bananas, grapes and strawberries when they’re on sale..I cannot/will not do without my Campbells chicken noodle soup..it’s a must for queasy stomach days (Gastroporisis) I do make lots of homemade soups and always buy my meats on sale..we live on SS so we try to stick to a budget but still manage to eat very well! And we save money as neither of us are smoker or drinkers, very seldom go to a movie but sometimes take in a concert..have saved and will be going to Berlin, Ohio to visit Amish country, two night and three days so not too bad of a price!
Quaker Doesn’t use artificial flavors or sweeteners in their oatmeal packets. At least where I live. The Great Value brand does. I’m allergic that’s why I know. 💁🏻♀️ I don’t eat them now but used to.
I avoid all these but Hot Dogs I buy Ball Park All Beef Hotdogs Nitrate Free. I don't eat them often once or twice a month but Yep I love hot dogs. I've stopped buying hamburger and hot dog buns ( white bread) and use whole grain high quality bread instead for a bun. Anna In Ohio
I keto, so I make my own sour cream. Tastes MUCH better and cheaper. It makes a great salad dressing with herbs and mayo. But I do keep canned soups, in my pantry, along with several packages of broth. They are part of my blizzard pantry. If the power doesn't go out in the winter, the contents of the blizzard pantry goes to the local food pantry. Yeah, I'd take that alcohol thing with a grain of salt. The evidence in the studies is a lof of metastudy. I like a glass of wine now and then. Three Buck Chuck or Winking Owl once a month isn't going to break the bank or lead to a heart attack.
Giving up sugar gets easier over time. I have been almost completely sugar-free for years. It gives me panic and anxiety. It feeds my autoimmune issue. Once it's out of your system, the cravings almost disappear. I used to be a major chocoholic. Considering how much better I am without, it's a no-brainer. I also don't eat anything with yeast in it, so no bread or baked things. I use plain yougurt for some many things.
I agree! The more sugar and carbs I eat, the more I crave. Fruit is the only sugar I eat now, and I stopped craving sugary treats. It's amazing how you can taste the natural sugar in foods like carrots.
Food stamps help me greatly with shopping; I buy high quaity foods and cook for myself; food stamps make it possible to cover at least 3 weeks of food each month. At 81, am debt free, no more car, no mortgage, no TV...only RUclips for news and movies. And a radio. For health reasons, I never have prepared foods, snacks, seed oils. Love eggs and bacon, no bread, no cereal, eat late too. No meds for me after 2 eye operations and 2 knee replacements pre-covid.
When I started looking to be more healthy through my foods, I looked at what my grandparents and great-grandparents (from both sides of the family) and started eating what they served. Had real butter, whole milk (not the cooled milk that they skimmed the cream for their coffee kind), made breads with lard from scratch, meat, garden potatoes & veggies... Grandpa on my dad's side hated eggs so he put lots of ketchup (UGH). Lard was also the frying when it was breakfast potatoes.. it goes a long ways when one has 5 boys & 6 girls growing, plus the adults. My primary Doc was happy to look at my bloodwork. He ended up disappointed that my cholesterol (the bad one) was 20 points below the level that he would recommend that kind of drugs. He ended up giving me a food intake log for 3 months & I took the bloodwork again. It was basically the same. I guess I'm abby normal or the FDA is kinda misleading the public. (This is when eggs & bacon were evil foods, SHEESH!!)
You are so correct about whole / real food! By switching to a completely real / whole food lifestyle, I lost 24 lbs in 2.5 months and have now kept that weight off for 9 months! I do drink the yellow can Red Bull though. I have to stop. It’s expensive. But, I like it. It’s the only thing I drink (one every other day) other than water.
There are wonderful ways to eat a vegan diet if thats what you want - but every diet has acceptable processed foods. I think whole foods are the way to go!
I wonder if you have tried to make your own cream of mushroom or chicken soups? I love a casserole, but I haven’t tried to make the home made version yet. Thanks for your list, I hope it helps people to be healthier.
I have. its actually pretty easy. You just make a rue (with flour and butter) and a milk product. I've used everything from whole milk to heavy cream. For chicken, you can use a powdered boullion or a paste for the chicken flavor and for mushrooms, grind up some fresh and add it, making it as thick as you want and with the salt and spices that taste good.
It does count. So a great goal would be to add more good for you foods, not eat less. You will automatically eat less of those sugar/processed foods but the mindset is of abundance not lack so add more veggies, more protein, more fruit.
I would never use margarine. I also have high cholesterol. Margarine is just a frankenfood sludge of artifical ingredients/chemicals. Butter is cow's milk. It's an easy decision for me. Frankenfood sludge or butter naturally made from cow's milk.
Other than an ounce of tart cherry, oj, or cider in my seltzer, a rare bowl of tomato soup with saltines, and about a once monthly serving of TJs veggie goyza, I don't eat/purchase any of these items. I do also eat vegan margerines as I'm exclusively plant based. Congrats on your weight loss! You do look great!. I have also been working on my weight this year and have lost 15% of my total weight and that's been due to not eating any processed food and keeping added sugars to < 15 grams per day. You get used to it really fast. I haven't paid attention to anxiety levels or sleep like you have. So not sure.
Me and my sugary Coca Cola. (Or Big K Cola). 😅😅 Well Jimmy cracked corn and idc. But seriously I limit it but I can’t just never have any. I don’t need any of the others tho. Just the classic stuff sometimes. The chips get me sometimes too but again, limited. Well I’m bad. So bad. 😂😂 But I do fairly well with everything in moderation. Usually just those and sometimes bread and occasionally sugary cereal or canned soup. Don’t really do much of the rest. The only sugar sub I found I like is the Truvia Brown. Good stuff. Expensive but so much better than all the others (which I usually can’t stand lol). I got a sale on it tho and bot like 4. 😅😅 Thank you Kroger. If someone would invent Truvia brown cola, I’d try it. Lol. Also love plain balsamic vinegar.
I totally disagree with you. Learn to coupon. Please don’t buy all the scare tactics of people who think everything is a poison. If you are at a healthy weight and not a diabetic, in moderation none of your list is bad. We spend $150 a month on groceries. We are not overweight and exercise daily.

Great video, I am avoiding high fats, bread, and no cereal. 😊
Thanks so much for watching. Cereal should not be marketed as a breakfast food. Its a dessert!
Nice video ❤
Thanks for the visit
My brother is a vegan. I've read the list of ingredients on some of the stuff he buys. I'll stick with real food.
There are wonderful ways to eat a vegan diet if thats what you want - but every diet has acceptable processed foods. I think whole foods are the way to go!
Real food is natural food which is vegan . Not the artificial meats they are highly processed.
@@saraconklinfrozenpennies oh good thanks I’ll give it a try
You look good girl !
Awe. thanks so much!! Its been a journey but giving up is NOT an option!
I love the same nuts. I ordered organic non gmo dry roasted nuts ans seeds, they make the best trail mix, or yogurt topping.
Its my new go to!
That's what happens to me with sugar. If I stay under 26 grams, I'm okay. Over that, same symptoms return. I use the tiny spoon for coffee. 😮
This is interesting - I should do some testing to see how much I can "get away with"! Thanks for watching!
I'm impressed you can give up sugar!
Its an every day battle. Some days are better than others 🙂
No credit cards how do you get hotel rooms or have rental cars exc
You can do either of those things with a debit card.
All of that is to be avoid by everyone, not just middle-aged women.
You are absolutely right! Thanks for watching!
Hi Sara, well I'm doomed - LOL. I eat everything that you listed, except energy drinks and alcohol. I only eat the items sparingly, does that count ?
It does count. So a great goal would be to add more good for you foods, not eat less. You will automatically eat less of those sugar/processed foods but the mindset is of abundance not lack so add more veggies, more protein, more fruit.
I hate the fake fruit flavors too!
no cereal ever
You. Oats are NOT good for you. What do they feed cows and pigs to make them fat? Corn, oats and soy. Just think about it.
Never eat oats or wheat !
I eat soy and in perfect health. I'm 67
I have high cholesterol so margarine is recommended. I really struggle with believing that recommendation though
I would never use margarine. I also have high cholesterol. Margarine is just a frankenfood sludge of artifical ingredients/chemicals. Butter is cow's milk. It's an easy decision for me. Frankenfood sludge or butter naturally made from cow's milk.
You can also substitute olive oil for many things if you don't want to use butter. I would never ever eat margarine.
I'm doing everything wrong.😥
Only thing I would skip/swap is the garlic powder for crushing my own garlic. Nice garlic oil. 😊
Great idea! I agree! I’m doing that next time!
❤❤❤ Sarah 😮😮😮
Lol.
Also love plain balsamic vinegar.
if wine is on this list..i.m out!
LOL. It's a tough one!
I totally disagree with you. Learn to coupon. Please don’t buy all the scare tactics of people who think everything is a poison. If you are at a healthy weight and not a diabetic, in moderation none of your list is bad. We spend $150 a month on groceries. We are not overweight and exercise daily.
@@silentnot4812 that is some of us once in a while guilty pleasure. Some of the stuff on that list can be appreciated, sparingly, especially if you buy the better version of it.
