    Back in 1981, one day 10 meters was wide open while I was camping in a forest on the shore of Lake Superior. Michigan U.P. There was no background noise. Eerily quiet. If someone was on the air the signal came thru as if conveyed over wires. Clear, no fading. I spoke to a guy in Texas who was running 5 watts on a modified CB radio. He was in the parking lot at the laundromat, waiting for his clothes to wash & dry. 42 years ago, I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was running 100 watts on a Kenwood TS-120 to a Swan multi-band mobile vertical antenna.

    Don't forget, these both cover the 12m band as well!!! I have both radios (Anytone branded) and the performance is incredible. I say this, with them sitting next to a new Yaesu FTDX10 in my shack. They are that good!

    • @dlambethful
      @dlambethful 8 месяцев назад

      Their performance is really not that great. They pick up lot of spurious harmonics unfortunately. Other than some quirky things, it's okay for the price though. I would not expect them to last as long as Japanese, American, or Taiwan made electronics. The transmit audio is quite dirty on a scope as well.

    • @mostlypostie1
      @mostlypostie1 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@dlambethful do you work for the competition? I have to ask because I own a few of these radios, and I have a calibrated radio test bench, and what you are saying, is wrong. These radios do not typically suffer from any of the issues you just mentioned.
      They have one of the cleanest waveforms on a scope of any radio in this bracket, ever.

      @@mostlypostie1 No I don't, I'm an amateur radio operator. I bought one last Christmas to play around with. The transmit audio on mine was pretty dirty, sounded like the bias was not set properly (Did not verify this though). The radio definitely has problems with spurious harmonics. The NR functions work until you transmit, but when you let of the transmit the recovery time is too long. Other than that it was just the build quality was not all that great, but it's a useful radio on a budget. I supposed I could have purchased a Dud, so there is that. I may buy another one here soon and try it again. It would make a good backpack or portable radio.

    • @mostlypostie1

      @@dlambethful It does sound like your rig had a problem for sure - that is not normal. I had mine on the spec-an (HP 8595E) today to have another look, and it is very clean. IMD is low (better that a Yaesu FT-857D in fact) and harmonics (2nd / 3rd /4th / 5th) don't exist. I think you were unlucky. I use mine on 10m and 12m here too.
      Alsomy NR recovery time isn't too bad - on level 2 I find it great but indeed, the recovery time is not the fastest especially on higher settings. 73

      For 12 meter you need a longer antenna. Your 10 meter antenna will not tx very well on 12 meter. It will not be resonant. The calling freq is 24.950.

    I've had the AT 5555n since November of 2019. I already had the AT 5555 and it's a talker.
    Well I'm excited to see and hear the vII model and hope to acquire one soon. In the meantime... Running the stock 60 watts with a Siro vertical covering all from 24+ to 30.01. Great little rig. Anytone makes a fine radio for being "Made in China".
    The new features on this unit has this old CB'er slobber. With the added CTCSS and Tones board already installed is an awesome thing.
    So Kids RUN OUT TODAY AND PICK YOU UP THE NEW AND IMPROVED AT-5555n II. YOULL BE GLAD YOU DID.
    AND KEEP WATCHING HAM RADIO CONCEPTS!

    Just started the video, but I just wanted to add that the QT40 will also do the 12m band if you open it up, and the whole of 12m fits on one bank easily. I actually opened mine up and MANUALLY (it was a pain) put all the old channels on them with one of the empty banks I did 11m, then 12m on another empty one, then some 10m repeaters and calling frequencies on another that was empty

      @@ehayes5217 Or is it fact hams are more likely running a multi band antenna most times versus CBers running monoband more efficient design.
