A modern diesels exhaust should be clear with the exception of sudden acceleration or extra loading. The color of the smoke is a useful guide to help determine the source of the trouble. BLACK SMOKE - Restricted air flow defective turbo / supercharger Overload; Improper injection BLUE SMOKE - Worn or stuck piston rings; high crankcase pressure; supercharger oil seals. WHITE SMOKE - Misfiring cylinders; water in fuel; water in cylinders lack of compression.
Wonderful sounding truck! I just put mine on the Spacecoast Craig's List to see if any locals are interested in mine which is also a 1968 M35A2C with winch. Testing the waters so to speak - I probably will not sell it! Al Broadbent
Buying one for parades or collection and such makes sense. And no, a reason isn't truly required- this truck's capabilities are way beyond what the average person needs, anyway. It's a great truck, in service for over fifty years. If you're looking for a truck in this weight class, M35 is the best there is.
#2 is the standard highway Diesel.....the conditioner keeps the injector pump lubricated, and helps compensate for the lower lubricative levels in today's low sulfur fuel. Type "diesel" into wikipedia . . . lots of good info there.
@wotasod No, the troop seats rattle ;) Actually it is amazing what you hear when you put a mic outside of the cab. When I operate the truck all I can hear from my seat is the roar of the engine and whine of the turbo.
Wow.. That sounds nice.. Do you know what kinda engine there is on it? Coul be nice to have one here in Denmark to drive in at summer on the beaches.. Bjarne
@d87bob- That's good to hear. The Virginia Defense Force has at least one in use, but it's privately owned by a VDF soldier. I was thinking, if I joined the VDF at some point, I'd have sufficient excuse for owning one. The VDF is very short on things like troop carriers and large utility trucks.
12 m.p.g. on diesel . . . . since it has a multifuel engine, some people run it on waste crankcase oil, or veggie oil cut with a little gas . . . so the fuel cost can me almost $0.
close.. its rated for 130-140 HP depends on type of turbo. The 5 ton mulit fuel was rated a tad higher in the 150's HP. but you are right on the money with the torque numbers.
That is interesting, but it's disappointing to hear the M35 will soon be out of service with the National Guard, as they and Army Reserve are the last ones in America who still use that superb truck. I understand they are affordable and have been used for 40+ years, but what practical applications could a civilian have for a truck this size? If I were to consider getting one, I'd like to find uses for it.
The mount seems to work well , perhaps you should mount the camera on the drivers side as the tree branches tend to be lower on the passengers side and more chance of the camera getting hit , it would be a shame if that happened, just myy two cents .
the police dept here have one of these trucks but im not sure they use it because it is starting to get a rusty look on it and has yet to move from the parking spot its in
i want one just to have it, i want to start a collection of older cars and trucks, thats one of my goals in life, and one of these will be in there somewhere
I am not sure I understand . . . If you are asking "How many gallons" it is a 50 gallon tank. . . . . the smoke is normal for this particular engine - it is a multi-fuel engine.
Sure did. Would not want to go over 45 m.p.h. with it . . . . but otherwise the rig feels great. The Deere alone weighs 10,000 lbs. . . . so it is quite a load.
that was what i was asking and to is it bad for a diesel to somke out a lot of bule when it run i am not talking a bout your i am talk one that you see like on farms and on the road
Not at all. Air over hydraulic brake system negates the need for a CDL. Thats how the military got away with not needing a CDL to operate these state side.
There is a guy on SteelSoldiers *dot* com names "CraneTruck" - he has a knuckle boom on his truck . . . seems to work pretty good. He said his KB is a "HIAB 765A"
It was de-milled to the University of S. Florida, a friend got it from USF, I bought it from him. More pics are posted at my blog tjcouch. blogspot. com
the sound of these trucks never get old.
I came here for the whistling sound.😂. With love from India.
We have no access for such beauties,😭

LOVE the Sound
I would like to see longer rides with the camera mounted like this. Great job..!
Fear not, we've got one for a water tanker and snowplow truck in our fire department, and she'll be in service for another 20 years, if I have my way.
ty and did not know and to can you show us how much it takes to get a full tank and is it bad for a lot of blue somke to come out

Funny you mention that - just placed an order for Michelin XLs! I am stoked!

turning sure is hard with those things

It is a Continental LDT 465 multi-fuel engine.

Check with your local State DMV, it varies based on where you live.
I love to have one of those
I have a question how old do you have to be to drive one on the road and do you need a cdl to operate one?

@tjcouch who needs a radio Eh? that is sweet music to me. and yes your camera mount worked very nicely
What kind of fuel mileage can you expect? I know it aint much but just need some numbers to calculate how much it cost to drive.
i want one just to have it, i want to start a collection of older cars and trucks, thats one of my goals in life, and one of these will be in there somewhere
I'm a deuce owner too.... where'd you get yours? Got any pics etc?
That made me chuckle
Thanks.. Is V-6 or V-8?
Bjarne In line Straight 6 Hercules Multifuel
Okey.. LOL.. What is a I-6? Is that a In-line 6?
Bjarne yup
I am not sure I understand . . . If you are asking "How many gallons" it is a 50 gallon tank. . . . . the smoke is normal for this particular engine - it is a multi-fuel engine.
very cool. If you want the original military tires as opposed to the street slicks, I can hook you up.

what kind of diesel engine is that? is it a Ltd 465 continental or Hercules?
Hercules.
not a bad diesel engine
ty a lot that help me out
An M35 with a 2 stroke detroit v6 would definitely scare some people.
Mike Miller anything with a v6 Detroit will scare
you dont need a cdl for these trucks
no

the whole neighborhood is now awake, and granny is dead. these things are noisy as fuck
#2 Diesel, with conditioner.
haha u kinda misse the sop sing there buddy =D
None of the above - LOL it is an I-6.
Google "Continental LDT 465" - lots of interesting elements to it.
Tires are $80, Custom fab wheels $220. Tires still have the injection mold nubs!
Bought them from O D Iron . Com (remove spaces)
Nice, tj ....
chances are you will need a CDL and in CT u have to be 18 atleast to get it
A borrowed JD 332 and Davis trailer (I was resodding my yard)
dude your tailgate rattles
a CDL? nooooooooo
There is a guy on SteelSoldiers *dot* com names "CraneTruck" - he has a knuckle boom on his truck . . . seems to work pretty good. He said his KB is a "HIAB 765A"
