  • What's life like as a cephalopod aquarist? "It's like having kids, except my kids are squid!"
    Our Tentacles exhibition is the largest living collection on cephalopods on display in the world-and keeping up with its tenants is colossal (squid) amount of work! Take a look behind the scenes with our Squid Squad and find out what it takes to care for our cuttle puddle of cephalopods.

    Time to culture the squids!

    *squids start having debates about marxism*
    Dang it, cultured them too long.

    Such a complex animal but a short life span makes me sad. Thank you for caring for them. I’ve learned a lot from your channel. Wish you could allow a day in each caretaker so that we can understand their struggles or routines.

    I'd love to work with cephalopods, what lucky aquarists! I visited the aquarium last month with the sole intent of seeing the cephalopods, they're such amazing creatures. The stumpy cuttlefish and flamboyant cuttlefish were my favorites!

    You get to pet and interact with the giant pacific octopuses!!! What a wonderful and rare experience! I would seriously pay money for that privilege! (and tried to - I called before my visit in August 2017 and asked if there was a "behind the scenes" experience with the octopuses - sadly there is not.) At least I go to see the big female before she passed away.

    Bro imagine how it must feel to be one of those squids. You’re born with all your brethren in this paradise where huge aliens take care of you and make sure your environment is ideal for you to thrive, then when you’re an adult, thousands more of those aliens come to see you and your family. You find a partner, you lay eggs together, only for them to be collected by the strange beings who raised you. Suddenly, you realize, this has happened before, and will go on long after you have passed.

      Monterey Bay Aquarium how long would the larger ones, like the Giant Pacific Octopus live? Also are they the ones that die after looking after their eggs? I used to be terrified of them but now they fascinate me so much! We fear what we don't understand, after all.

    What's the different between Cuttlefish and Squid?

    • @squidonyourhead
      @squidonyourhead Год назад

      I know this is 5 years later but cuttlefish are much more stubbier and have shorter tentacles and head. They have curvy fins that go along the mantle and they have a cuttlebone. Squids are much more longer and have more of a triangular shape they also have a long internal skeleton called a gladius

    I love your aquarium and all its animals. Being a Christian/Creationist, it was interesting to hear how difficult it is to maintain the animals with such delicate specific needs. That would contradict an evolutionary model where animals would need to be strong in order to survive. Slow, evolutionary change wouldn't create such a delicate creature, of any species. Psalm 19-The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

    • @TheJakesAdventures
      @TheJakesAdventures 5 лет назад +1

      artistlight This is old, but your whole premise is flawed. The animals are adapted to their environment, just because it’s hard to replicate their needs doesn’t mean they don’t thrive in a WILD environment. If anything, it supports the opposite of what you’re implying.

    • @rowinacamacho6343
      @rowinacamacho6343 5 лет назад +1

      You're comment on evolution is flawed, squid evolved so their bodies became more hydrodinamic in order to both pursue prey and escape predators. Lil slice of info; prehistoric squid used to have a hard outer shell, as time went by they evolved to not need it, apart from what is now known as the cuttlebone.
