- What's life like as a cephalopod aquarist? "It's like having kids, except my kids are squid!"
Our Tentacles exhibition is the largest living collection on cephalopods on display in the world-and keeping up with its tenants is colossal (squid) amount of work! Take a look behind the scenes with our Squid Squad and find out what it takes to care for our cuttle puddle of cephalopods.

Give us a call when you need a babysitter for your squid children! The pyjama squid shouldn't give us too much trouble getting ready for bed, right?
Nope! They're in a constant state of slumber party!
Time to culture the squids!
*plays classical music at full blast for three years*
*squids start having debates about marxism*
Dang it, cultured them too long.
Hazel Bee
>Implying Marxism is at all cultural or intelligent
>Starting a political debate on a video about cephalopods
If they are smart of course they would turn Marxist
"its like your thinking something, and I wish I knew what it was"
I think its something along the lines of "Damn, those big talking shrimp look tasty..."
I love cephalopods so much!
Same
Me too!

Veemo!
Such a complex animal but a short life span makes me sad. Thank you for caring for them. I’ve learned a lot from your channel. Wish you could allow a day in each caretaker so that we can understand their struggles or routines.
I'd love to work with cephalopods, what lucky aquarists! I visited the aquarium last month with the sole intent of seeing the cephalopods, they're such amazing creatures. The stumpy cuttlefish and flamboyant cuttlefish were my favorites!
Another reason why the Monterey Bay Aquarium is the coolest place.
2:22 "My kids are squids". I know too some kids that are also in fact, squids....
"You're a kid now, you're a squid now"
Man I would work here in a heartbeat. I love the marine bio so much AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
1:21 THOSE CUTTLEFISH BEBIES ARE SO CUTEEEE!!!
Awesome video! Hope we see more like this in the future, its really cool to get to know the aquarists and what they think of their charges.
Will do! Thanks for the support!
Can I come over for a playdate?😂😁
Cephalopods are my favorite animals. The flamboyant cuttlefish is my absolute favorite, it's the attitude. 😂😁😍😍😍
woomy :)

Can we talk about how the subtitles subtitle the laugh at the end as a "cephalaugh" xD Whoever did that should be given a fucking medal
This WILL be my job someday. It MUST!!!!!!!!!
You get to pet and interact with the giant pacific octopuses!!! What a wonderful and rare experience! I would seriously pay money for that privilege! (and tried to - I called before my visit in August 2017 and asked if there was a "behind the scenes" experience with the octopuses - sadly there is not.) At least I go to see the big female before she passed away.
2:21 Splatoon joke

Sounds like a lot of work, but it sounds so cool too!

Someday I want to interact with a giant pacific octopus. It seems cool with all the tentacles all over you.
Be Well guys
Thanks for doing some fascinating work & sharing this niche on the tree of life.
This video was highly informative and quite interesting. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing it with us. Diane
Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for all you do there. I love watching them.
They do have a unique vibe. Connect with that and
you'll find a friend.
I never thought u could cultivate squid 0_0
Maybe not for food consumption, but its still great
your all dorky and I love it
You guys are amazing! I also really want to know, how and what do you feed the baby cuttlefish paralarvae?

Cephalopod Farmer
Amazing Job!!!! I really envy You girls!!! keep up!!
I think I'm in love with these girls these are my favorite animals love em so much peronality
Omg the little tiny ones!!! I want one!
In my opinion, this place is cooler than Georgia Aquarium. Sure they have whale sharks and manta rays, but Monterey bay has way cooler stuff. Like the vampire squid that they on display at the grand opening of the exhibit , so cool!
nautilus is my favorite animal on the planet i hope in the future we can finally keep them in our home...
Bro imagine how it must feel to be one of those squids. You’re born with all your brethren in this paradise where huge aliens take care of you and make sure your environment is ideal for you to thrive, then when you’re an adult, thousands more of those aliens come to see you and your family. You find a partner, you lay eggs together, only for them to be collected by the strange beings who raised you. Suddenly, you realize, this has happened before, and will go on long after you have passed.
Yes
Dream job!
BABY FLAMBOUYANT CUTTLEFISH OMG

Turn on CC and read her laugh at the end..
Funny looking dog.
Is this a puppy mill ?
Hi , i wnat to raise bigfin reed squid , can i know wht exactly the salinity , and temperature for tht squid to be alive ?? Thnks..
nice video, do you have separate cephalopods that are specifically for showcasing and have breeding cultures going all the time or do you cycle them through periodically?
I love you, guys! I mean Monterey Bay as well as cephalopods! I am studying them right now on bachelor's degree and find them absolutely fascinating. When do you hire :-D?
Cool I've been to Monterey i even vlogged it because its so cool
Are there cephalopod tours at Monterey Bay Aquarium?! Would love to see behind the scenes.
Why do I find this job appealing?

Monterey Bay Aquarium - I enjoy your videos more than television. :3
I want your job lol
You guys are lucky you don't have a math related job. This job seems fun.
i just want to start up aquarium for squid, what advise for me?
lol, a cephlab
How do u get those nautilus
Squid kids
Aren't squids the only cephalopod not suitable for tank habitats?
What is their general life span?
Great question! Many of the cephalopods we have live just about one year, hence why Alicia, Ellen and Michelle are always hard at work growing up the next generation of cephalo-babies!
Monterey Bay Aquarium how long would the larger ones, like the Giant Pacific Octopus live? Also are they the ones that die after looking after their eggs? I used to be terrified of them but now they fascinate me so much! We fear what we don't understand, after all.
nautilus' can live for 20 years or more
I wish I could do that
You could! mbayaq.co/1GG0Okk
I wonder if the squid behavior has modified over generations from being raised at the lab
What's the different between Cuttlefish and Squid?
I know this is 5 years later but cuttlefish are much more stubbier and have shorter tentacles and head. They have curvy fins that go along the mantle and they have a cuttlebone. Squids are much more longer and have more of a triangular shape they also have a long internal skeleton called a gladius
How many people all together work on the 🦑🐙
The whole of the Husbandry team and their many interns and volunteers help run this display-so many mouths to feed and exhibits to keep clean! Alicia, Ellen and Michelle are the lead aquarists on this gallery.
I think without the time limit on life span they would dominate the earth.
can you yoes sqids for pets i love theme
When they die do you eat them?
Hey Scott, good question-and no, we don't! Cephs that pass are usually dissected and studied to learn how to take care of the next generation.
Monterey Bay Aquarium
lol it wasn't a serious question. Thanks for the answer though. I hope to visit someday.

I love your aquarium and all its animals. Being a Christian/Creationist, it was interesting to hear how difficult it is to maintain the animals with such delicate specific needs. That would contradict an evolutionary model where animals would need to be strong in order to survive. Slow, evolutionary change wouldn't create such a delicate creature, of any species. Psalm 19-The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
artistlight This is old, but your whole premise is flawed. The animals are adapted to their environment, just because it’s hard to replicate their needs doesn’t mean they don’t thrive in a WILD environment. If anything, it supports the opposite of what you’re implying.
You're comment on evolution is flawed, squid evolved so their bodies became more hydrodinamic in order to both pursue prey and escape predators. Lil slice of info; prehistoric squid used to have a hard outer shell, as time went by they evolved to not need it, apart from what is now known as the cuttlebone.
I want this girl insta I'd 😍
