They both know that she probably shouldn't be there but Howl while not approving or disapproving out either way knows who she is. But if we think about it maybe he's afraid to do something to lose her. You can sort of see the resignation to not being invited to sit beside him. She takes a place toward the end of the table and sort of looks away as they put food and drink next to her. Probably feeling like she doesn't belong even a little reluctant to accept their kindness. As much as they grow to Kirby each other and even love each other, he never actually says whether he wants her to clean or not. The awkwardness and uncertainty she felt when they first met it's in full swing. But it's interesting that when they meet again neither one admits to having met before...
