  • Spirited Away was absolutely gorgeous. For my first anime experience, this was a blast! Wasn't sure how I'd go with reading subtitles the whole film but it was super easy and I was totally taken with the voice actors expressions that portrayed so much. Enjoy my reaction!
    Let me know in the comments what you thought this film was about since It had so many cool sequences and poetic imagery.

    If you liked Spirited Away, I recommend watching the rest of the movies in Studio Ghibli's lineup. Some of my favorites not including Spirited Away are Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and When Marnie Was There.
    As for how I first found out about this movie, way back in the day during the early 2000s, Disney had the localization and distribution rights for North America. My mom works in marketing and one of her clients worked with Disney regularly, so when he found out she had a young kid (me) he pretty much gave her all of the DVDs and VHS tapes they gave him, and the English dub of Spirited Away was one of those movies. I've been hooked on Studio Ghibli ever since.

    No face is a _fascinating_ antagonist/sidecharacter. At the end of the movie, it seems all he really wanted was companionship. But he clearly does not know how to articulate that in any way shape or form, so he starts just giving people things. he wants Chihiro to be his friend, so he gives her things and is confused when that does not work teh way he wants it to. He eats the frog because he wants a voice. He is extremely selfish and actually qute childlike in his desie to _have_ things, but not have any agency or understanding how to _get_ those things.

    • @TuningAnApple
      @TuningAnApple 2 месяца назад +5

      He is actually like a mirror. He treats people how he is treated and learns from them like a mirror. He thought Chihiro was like the others, the people that valued gold. But she didn't and treated him kindly without expecting anything in return. Living with the good witch is a very good influence to him.

    I think for westerners, there is a bit of a cultural whiplash here. In Japan, Shintoism is still fairly widespread and even those that don't actively practise are livivng with the cultural knowledge that spirits are just everywhere. Every river, every mountain, every forest has their own sppirits. Like with the Irish fairyrings, there are certain buildprojects that have been halted or abandoned because of spiritual concerns. many people still leave small offerings at various lac shrines, for good luck.
    So the Idea that there is a bathhouse full of spirits is not quite as far fetched, especially as the spirits are pretty much just people with different appearances and a few powers, but they eat, drink, bath, have societies, etc.

    The thing with Ghibli is that they're not going to hold your hand throughout the movie and over-explain things. You're along for the ride and it's up to you to infer and decipher the rules of the world and the meaning of the story as you watch. There are of course different levels to this depending on the movie, but as a whole they trust the viewer's intelligence and ability to keep up.

    Honestly the dub for this movie is one of the very few absolutely exceptional dubs out there that I’d actually recommend over the original audio for English speakers. Not in that it’s “better” but it’s of substantial quality that is absolutely on par with the original, and for a native English speaker it makes a better over all experience. And I’m typically a sub over dub guy. Also. It’s so funny seeing you also try to hold your breath during the bridge scene, as a kid I always did that too lol.

    13:30 - from what I've heard about the No-face character, the director talked about people who don't have a healthy sense of identity, who try to find it in other people or in other things. No-face is, apparently, a personification of someone lost and seeking identity.
    As with other characters in other films, he started as an idea and later became a larger part of the film. Miyazaki often changes the story based on drawings or other inspiration, making one character bigger than he first anticipated. No-face was not originally a large part of the story, until Miyazaki came upon the idea to make him a more important part of the plot.

    I'm actually surprised you have managed to get this up and keep it up. Ghibli Studios is notorious for taking down reactions to their movies. I love how you were appreciating the illustrations so much. I miss this type of artwork in movies nowadays. I always love the "stink spirit" scene. It was inspired by Miyazaki himself who cleaned out a river that was heavily polluted and found, among other things, a bicycle. My sister is a big fan of this and years ago got a book on the myths and creatures in the movie. A lot of it would make much more sense to a Japanese audience. For example, the book said that when Chihiro first saw Haku flying as a dragon, a Japanese audience would recognize his tie to water. The mushroom spirit many others are tied into Japanese myths, beliefs, and culture. So yes, it does feel quite "Alice in Wonderland" bonkers to those of us without the background. Even so, it works because Chihiro is going through this world.

  • @lightawake
    @lightawake 6 месяцев назад

    Love your reactions! I'm so pleased you watched this with subtitles! As a bilingual, the english dub in this one misses a few things. This film is directed by the renowned Hayao Miyazaki, who is the flagship director at ghibli (jib-lee) studios. Any of his films are great, but I think you would enjoy some of his other major hits in the following order (I strongly suggest watching subbed unless indicated): 1. Laputa, Castle in the Sky 2. Kiki's Delivery Service 3. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 4. Porco Rosso (dub ok) 5. Princess Mononoke (dub's ok) 6. Howl's Moving Castle (dub ok) 7. As the Wind Rises 8. My neighbour Totoro.
    Note: Ghibli studio employs several different directors who aren't Miyazaki, and who do not have the same depth of craftsmanship as he does. However there is one standout film by a different director at Ghibli - Grave of the Fireflies - but it is a tough and poignantly sad film, which people never want to see again, so I would take care about deciding whether to watch this one.

    I love Hayaoi Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli movies! :D I'd love to see you watch more of their movies. I bet you would enjoy Totoro, Princess Mononoki, and Howl's moving castle. :) Totoro is wholesome, mononoki is epic and action packed, and Howl's moving castle is fantastical and romantic. :) Also, I'd love to see you react to Steven Universe! It's my absolute favorite series, ever. Starts out slow, but it grows into a super fascinating and intricately woven story. Plus, very wholesome and music is a HUGE part of the show. :)

    Um dos meus filmes favoritos, eu era muito novo quando assisti esse filme pela primeira vez, 12 ou 13 não lembro muito bem , mas foi o primeiro filme do Hayao Miyazaki que eu assisti , e tem essa estranheza toda com a história que parecia um sonho, parece um sonho lúcido, onde vários elementos diferentes da vida se encontram em uma narrativa louca , mas que faz algum sentido em nosso próprio interior. Foi muito legal ver você assistir na língua original, mas não adianta muito pq precisa da legenda, e tem tanta coisa que não entendemos por não falarmos a língua e não termos tanto conhecimento da cultura, das criaturas e espiritos que inspiram esse mundo fantástico. Gostaria muito que pudesse fazer um react do filme Kiriku também um dos filmes que me marcou na infância.

    12:40 *I knew the dub added that extra line!* The english version spoils Haku being the dragon right here and I've always disliked that choice.

    This movie introduced me to Studio Ghibli's exceptional anime animation. If you think THIS film is beautiful, watch The Garden of Words. It runs at 64 frames per second as supposed to the traditional 24 per second, so every movement is beautifully smooth. Everything is stunning in that film.

    0:30 I recommend watching Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, but because there's the original Yu-Gi-Oh!, if you watch GX, you need to watch the original show (I don't recommend the English dub, not only because it's not that good, 4Kids changed too much stuff, it's not the same as the Japanese version, not only because of the names, it's also because the plot and what the characters say).
    the second show I recommend is Beyblade Metal Saga, unlike Yu-Gi-Oh!, you don't have to see the original to watch it.
    12:40 It's nothing, if you saw how Ginga and Masamune from Beyblade Metal Saga eat, you'll die from laughter.
    27:30 that's why it's my favorite anime movie of all time.

    I have not watched that many older anime series or movies(of course the classics: dragonball(1986) , naruto, onepiece and bleach were a must watch. Well when i was younger and had the time to rewatch onepiece 3x in highschool lmao) but i've always wanted to watch this one because of the gifs they still use to this day from the movie.

    You gotta understand this is a japanese film so all the monsters and spirits are from japanese folklore. Even the name of this movie Spirited Away is a concept in Japanese folklore. So for the average Japanese viewer, its much less random and confusing. Whats happening in the movie? The title, shes been spirited away.
