    I like how, as an Oklahoman himself, the director fought to have the film shot on location in Oklahoma instead of having Georgia as a stand-in. So glad he won out in the end.

    Honestly I liked the insurance plot line due to the the current underlying issue of real estate developers buying out land after disasters from people. It's predatory due to the position the victims are in. You could actually see this issue happen last year after the big fires in Hawaii.

    Fun fact: in the movie, when Tyler and Kate are at the rodeo and Tyler tells Kate about how he witnessed his first tornado. It was real. On another show and on an interview, he told the producer that when he was about 8 years old, he was driving with his aunt and a few of his cousins to his aunt's ranch. Eventually, he said that he saw a giant tornado headed towards Jarrell on the highway right in front of him. Glen Powell witnessed the infamous dead man walking tornado.

      I would have been in that tornado had it actually kept traveling south. At the time we lived on the west side of I35S and it was staying on that side of the freeway and heading south. We were south of Jarrell and believe me, we had the news on, and were watching the sky. My BF at the time was out in the parking lot yelling up at me, "Come look at the sky, it's all green!" I yelled back, "Get inside!"

    @joselaba 6 месяцев назад +100

    I wouldn’t say the film was trying to say that Tyler had the “sixth sense” for storm chasing. There are scenes that explicitly show Tyler copying Kate’s movements/decisions, showing that he can’t “feel what the storm is thinking”. He’s essentially the male version of Jo, and Kate is the female version of Bill.

    • @Neukarsmell
      @Neukarsmell 6 месяцев назад +29

      I got the impression he was testing her / almost mocking her because he genuinely did not expect her to have the same instinct for it that he did. He became intrigued because he figured out right away that she had intentionally lied through her teeth about which storms to track next. He knew where to go on his own and was pleased to discover that she did too. He finally met someone else who got it, and that’s why he remains so interested in her after that. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @joselaba
      @joselaba 6 месяцев назад +14

      @@Neukarsmell that’s honestly an interesting take on it. Idk. Tyler’s “abilities” wasn’t honestly dwelled upon too much throughout the film, but he does explain that he’s educated on storm chasing. The film felt more so focused on Kate’s abilities, rather than her education. Even more so, it’s Tyler’s education that helps her crack the code on the moisture-polymer. Basically being a perfect balance between the two characters. At the beginning, I honestly thought Kate was supposed to be Jo and Bill’s offspring, but Helen Hunt has been retired for a minute and is focusing on her daughter (which is more than respectable), so she’s a completely different character here. That’s why I think it’s more so implied that it’s Kate’s, and Kate alone, abilities.

    I went in with low expectations but actually kind of loved it. I love that Kate was unknowingly on the equivalent of Jonas’ team from the first movie, with the scrappy RUclipsrs being a little more like Jo and Bill’s ragtag team, especially with the red Dodge Ram.
    I loved all the hints at storm chasing lore that were in there that you’d recognize only if you’re into storm chasing, whether it’s throwbacks to the folks who died in Moore 99 under the bridges, Reed Timmer’s Dominator, and even Javi’s truck on its side reminded me so much of Mike Bettes getting rolled at El Reno.
    It wasn’t perfect. The science with the twins was totally inaccurate, for one, and chasers would never ever encourage people to seek shelter in a movie theater of all places. Literally any other store in that strip would have been a better choice. And lots more issues…
    But still… I loved it. I thought the romance was cute without being too much. I’m with you; I’d love another movie of those two.
    Thanks for sharing!

I thought the movie was really good and very intense. The theater was packed, and everyone was glued to the big screen. I would definitely give it 4 out 5 stars and would recommend anyone who liked the first movie go see it. The part that bothered me the most was early on when the guy was saying CAPE was at 4000… while the tornado was ON THE GROUND RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. It’s like a fan at a championship parade saying “Hey I’m looking at our win-loss record and I think this could be our year!”
    Good on them for mentioning CAPE and picking a realistic value for a big outbreak. I just felt like they didn’t adequately research the context in which someone would say that.

    OMG finally your upload! hehe
    I loved the movie, it was so good, when it comes to the tornadoes i loved the ominousness of them, like a T-Rex appearance in Jurassic Park. As a physicist i loved the scientific representation (the struggle of studying and the difference of perspectives with people of distinct backgrounds, i.e. Tyler), loved the safety awareness about overpasses (possibly referencing the overpass video(?) or the 1999 Bridge Creek/Moore Tornado(?)), the fact that they finally took the dangerousness of tornado debris seriously (unlike the 1996 one that people walked inside of tornadoes as if it was nothing, just fast wind).
    When it comes to the plot I liked the references they throw in, like Dorothy V, El Reno, the subversion of the group dynamics of the first movie (giving you a foreshadow of the break up and change of work group), i like that it challenges you about the nature of research and to not judge other tornado fans just because they have fun and look like hill billies lol. I also liked that the romantic plot was more vaguely insinuated, they never kiss or take it seriously. Also, as a mexican I liked the cultural diversity of the hillbillie group, finally brown and black storm chasers, although it's the midwestern red states with rodeos and all, it's just nice to see it.
    It's nearly a 10/10 for me, a great tornado movie and super approachable for general audiences, my GF loved it. I heard it's going well at the box office, I hope they release promotional material, like the movie on VHS for old times sake.

    Friendly reminder Twisters is not a full sequel to Twister 96. Its a standalone sequel that’s loosely in the same universe and at its most basic, a more modern version of Twister 96 (embodied via Tyler and Kate kinda taking aspects from Bill, maybe a holdover from earlier versions of the script). One thing i dont like in movies like this is when the main character has some "sixth sense." Knowledge about tornadoes comes from experience, not just natural talent. It sort of undermines the people who actually worked to get where they are. Also, they sort of make tornadoes seem less extreme than they are because they can just go and drive to a tornado any other day and find one no problem and act like its no big deal. Also also, the wind is not consistent at all. Like HOW is this BUS being blown towards them while theyre just fine even though the bus is further from the tornado?! This happens a lot in the final scene. Other than that through, it was great.

    I enjoyed this movie. I found it to be a little.... overbearing. Every storm had a tornado. They were standing like 30 feet from the funnel. The storms were spinning incredibly fast, like something you would see on Neptune. The red Dodge not flipping EVER was pretty sad. It was fun though! If you can push your disbelief away, it's fun.

    As a tornado nerd AND a romance lover, all I have to say about that is: ❤ ~They were scar-mates~ ❤
    My only gripe is in the very beginning when one of Kate's friends said that the doppler wasn't showing storms until the afternoon. Doppler isn't a prediction model. 🥺

    I was in a tornado. It was a Fujita Scale 1 but it neatly rearranged an entire trailer park as I passed by. I was driving through horizontal rain and winds so powerful that the body of my minivan was jumping and the tires were skidding. There was zero visibility, just dark shapes occasionally whizzing by. Scared the crap out of me.
    But in Twisters, the residents of Oklahoma are quite unimpressed, despite having some massive tornados in their past. No one has shelters; not in their yards, or schools, or public shopping or entertainment areas. When I lived in Alabama (which has fewer twisters), every yard had one. Every public building had a place to shelter.
    In tornado season EVERYONE is prepared. Events are canceled if there's a hint of a threat. The National Weather Service would be giving minute by minute updates. They have a loudspeaker system to sound an alarm loud enough to be heard in every corner of the county.
    Does the movie show all this? No. It did in the original Twister movie. The opening scene of a room full of scientists monitoring scary weather developments creates a sense impending disaster. But in this updated film, no one is alarmed despite the fact that a gang of storm chasers has invaded the town.
    Even when there are tornados forming IN PLAIN SIGHT, no one thinks to escape open areas. There are all kinds of ridiculous scenes like a Little League game, a street fair, park activities, and even a rodeo blithely going on without a care in the world. Not until the sky is black and debris is seen blowing through do the citizens bother to get moving.
    The core idea of the movie is the struggle to alert the public in time to avert disaster. But the public in this flick are pretty much too stupid to take a hint on the SIMPLEST warning signs. Why bother with expensive new science interventions when no one wants to take care of the easiest and cheapest methods?
    The cast of actors in this story is too large. There is simply no way the writers can fill back story on that many people. The female lead has THREE love interests in total and none of them get any amplification. Not even Glen Powell. The remaining characters are split between rival storm chasers; one group is corporate sponsored (cue evil background music) and the other is a wild collection of misfits who for some reason cannot stop screaming. Nothing in the scene happens to trigger elation, fear, etc. They just scream for the sake of screaming.
    They could have pruned at least six actors from the story without affecting anything at all. That would have given them enough screen time to fill out the remaining members. It's so bad that actress Katie O'Brien, someone with a decent resume, literally whizzes by so fast that she is lost in the blur. Tunde Adebimpe plays a more mature roll as a man who actually understands the science of tornadoes. But he gets about 2 minutes of screen time which leaves his character a mystery. Would have been nice if a story line allowed him to be a guide or sensible mentor to the group. But he whizzes past and is lost.
    Some of the special effects were noteworthy. Outside of these, the camera work was cheap and uninteresting. There's a trick that television productions use to substitute for actual artistic appeal: fill the screen with the actor's heads and shoulders. If you turned off the sound and watched it, you'd see that most of it was just that. I'd expect that from a Hallmark channel flick but a major studio production could have done SOO much better.
    How about pulling back the cameras and get more size perspective for dividing the ominous twister from the ant size storm chasers. Why not have some real humor and rivalry between the corporate sponsors and zany internet influencers? So much untapped potential.
    I found myself fidgeting in my seat and wishing it would just be done. That's not how I expected to feel.

    Saw it in 4DX and it was excellent! Lots of laughter in the theater after the opening scene, I think because everyone was so shocked how intense the special effects made it feel. I mean the wind blowing on us, rain (mist, you don't get wet), and seats shaking like crazy really add to it. Definitely recommend seeing it I 4DX if you can!

    I said this in the tier list video but, the original Twister will always (to me) be the best tornado movie. Twisters was a good time and a good stand-alone sequel. I liked how it's basically its own movie with its own original elements with little nods to the original.

    Thanks for the review. I’m not wasting my time watching Twisters. It just seems like a Twister reboot. Twister had a great renown cast. None of these actors are renown, even Glenn Powell. He’s considered up and coming.

      There's more weather terminology used in Twisters, though, something they barely mention in Twister. They talk about CAPE, shear, etc. In a sense, to me, Twisters was a bit more scientific, than its predecessor. You should give it a try. I went in with very low expectations, and came out very impressed.

      *renowned. Also all three of the mains are plenty famous if you know anything about film. Anthony Ramos is a Golden Globe nominee, Daisy Edgar-Jonas is a two time GG nominee, and Powell is Hollywood’s new leading man. Seems a silly reason not to watch an action movie but to each their own.

    Watched it yesterday with my BIL and we both agreed it was better than the original. My only complaints are it was slow, the plot holes (I'm nitpicky) and how we literally get no dialogue from other characters besides Kate, Javi and Tyler. Obviously, they're side characters so it's to be expected but I thought these guys were pretty cool and I would've loved to learn more! Anywho, awesome review, love your content!
