28 Reasons Why Good Photographers Stay Poor 😭
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 окт 2024
- This video covers the 28 ways photographers stay poor, inspired by Charlie Munger's idea of inversion thinking, where we often solve problems better in reverse. If emerging photographers avoid these pitfalls, one can unintentionally succeed.

#29: Spend all your time and energy worrying about the worst case scenario that will never happen.
Oh this is a very good one too👌🏻
Such a great list, and it could apply to nearly any occupation.
Indeed it does.
I just bumped into this channel...the video is crispy and clear. I liked it.
Awesome, thank you!
Such a stellar list, and every point you made is spot on!
thx greg.
Birds don’t pay me for the photos I take of them!

@@stevecarty I think AI is putting the final nail in that coffin...
By birds do you mean the feathered kind? I'm British and the word birds can mean women.

This video was recommended to me, I feel attacked, yet wanting to fight be a better person, rather than feel defeated. It is easily done to feel alone (it’s in the word ‘self’ employed) with the reasons you gave and to allowing them to be encompassing. Thank you for the hard truths to form better habits for a enriching career! 🙂
Glad we found each other. I’m here to motivate and help with the mindset of a working pro.
Great vid. I’m 45yr and at the start of the journey. Shot around 10 commercial projects, around 10 portrait shoots. I’d like to monetise what I do but it still seems ostentatious to put fees on a shoot.
it's art & commerce. if you make a living elsewhere, as you were. if you're trying to make a living, get used to charging. watch ore of my content
If the teenager with an R50 can charge for her photos you can too!
Cartier-Bresson's family owned two factories that employed 100's of people and Vivian Maier never sold a photo.
Truths.
Thanks C. Peace
I’m glad I found you. Thank you for all your knowledge and insight 🙏🏾
I’m glad we found each other. I’m here. Use me.
Supportive spouse is so key. I have been a photographer for 20 plus years. I can't tell you how many times my wife said "it's time to get a new dream." Wanting me to quit. Well she is now an ex wife. The girl friend is so supportive and my success rate is over the top!😊
Hate to hear it but it’s true. Been there. Done that. Supportive girlfriend now and my career and channel blows up.
thankyou for this list

You broke my heart with the DSLR comment :(
sorry. just true. if every manufacturer is no longer making them, why are you sad that i'm the one bringing the news? i'm just a photographer. truth is truth. we don't have to like it but it doesn't change it from being so.

Don't buy a DSLR? Scott Choucino enters the chat! I have to agree with Scott that a 900 USD 5dsr is still a workhorse and worth buying in 2023.
He shoots food. If you shoot people, I think this is a different conversation!

Thank you Steve, comment for the algorithm and support.
We were meant to find each other. And I’m getting better at titles and thumbs.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
My man hit the nail on the head. My two biggest problems are procrastination and my spouse isn't supportive. How I got over procrastination is I started treating photography like business instead of hobby. My spouse is not a cheerleader but she doesn't nag me and she just lets me work.
it's a start larry.. bring in that paper and the support will miraculously appear.
Sadly I think all those reasons were or still are my case. But my biggest problem is that even though I constantly educate myself and practice protographing, the last +- two years I'm like frozen. Even editing and uploading photos to Instagram seems impossible to me even though people tell me that my photos are great and I should do it professionally 😢🥺
BTW I'm glad to find your channel. You always inspire me and make me think.

Exactly why I got a 9-5. I learned that the way I make money doesn’t take away from my passion and who I am. I love photography just cant give up a great paying job for it.

#29 keep yourself in a financially negative position so it will give you excuses to work so much that you won’t have time to touch your camera.
Go Carty!
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
My god i relate to this persona so much 😂
I worry almost all day everyday about the “future of pro photography” and “how AI is going to effect the market”, when clearly it will stay relevant for a long time, especially when it envolves people.
I cannot imagine wanting an AI “art” of myself instead of a professional photo for exemple.
nothing can replace human creativity. those that can't do what we do turn to AI. but the human interaction, the relationships necessary to shoot portraits will never be duplicated. You have to be undeniable. Your work, your attitude, your energy. When your undeniable, no AI is going to get in between you and the goal of $100k / yr with your camera. If the work is there, shift your mindset. if the work needs work, shift your mindset and focus on improving. look at behance.net / discover / photography . your work should be there.
Absolutely brilliant!
Great info
Thx ruuuuuunnnnneeeerrrr
Excellent advice as always but, I would add… you can’t really tell people not to buy a DSLR… you buy a camera that suits you and your style of photography. It’s difficult to buy a bad camera/car/phone/laptop, just buy one that suits you AND (as you mentioned) your budget.
you wouldn't advise someone to buy a VHS player or a DVD player today for that matter. technology evolves. every major brand has discontinued their DSLR line. so why would i advise someone to buy old tech? yes buy what you can afford but also buy into the 21st century.
I get what you are saying I really do but a VHS is 50yrs old so not a fair analogy. Nikon btw still make the D850 and its out of stock at B&H and Adorama. My point is to be the best photographer you can be by using what is right for you and not always being led by tech. A mirrorless camera is great, as is a dslr, but don’t be fooled into thinking the ‘latest tech’ will make your work better, you don’t need to follow trends to improve your photography. Three year old cameras were amazing when they came out, nothings changed. I respectfully stand by my point, if I were to buy a used DSLR and spend the change on a trip to Paris, or better models and a stylist or a road trip, or better production or more studio time, THAT would improve my photography, and nobody would ever say to me ‘ahh if you’d shot it on a mirrorless.. it would have been better..’. Nobody can tell the difference. Back in the day when you and I were young, did any picture editor or art buyer ever say to you ‘if you’d taken that on the latest tech… I’d have bought it or paid you more..’?
Not everyone likes EVF’s or hybrid/electric cars or phones with no buttons… tech might be new, but it’s not for everyone, why do you think Apple are on their 3rd generation iPhone SE (it has a proper fingerprint button) because millions don’t like swiping up.
We are so lucky to have such a choice of incredible tech, just buy what works for you even if it’s not the latest. (Sorry for the long reply)

Hi, if I am doing photography only service, should I buy a mirrorless camera. I'm just starting out, not earning much, but I am thinking on switching to mirrorless. Should I? or should I keep my dslr? And make money that way and save before getting a mirrorless camera. Any significant difference in photography w/ a dslr versus mirrorless? Please enlighten me as I am just new, just started freelance last year, and using a dslr camera
Mirrorless changed the game for me. But depends on what you have. I had a 50mpxl 5Dsr. I changed to a 45mpxl R5.
@@stevecarty I don't have money to buy a fullframe, nor a brandnew camera. I bought a used D5300 and used it to earn money, for a photo only service. Do you think it is the best way to switch to a mirrorless apsc? And is it worth it, and why? Can you enlighten me please. Thank you!
I'm from the Philippines by the way 🙂
Better newer sensors. Better processing. Better tech. Eye tracking. Less motion due to mirror slap. Apsc is ok for entry but lenses don’t relate exactly and you’ll have to upgrade. I’d go straight go a budget full frame mirrorless like the r8. Bodies change often. Glass lasts for ever. But glass.
Fun video :)
"Why Good Photographers Stay Poor".... now i know.. 😅
I feel called out 😭
i'm sorry. but i'm here for motivation, mentorship and mindset. stevecarty.com/archive
@@stevecarty 💪🏽
Wait what’s wrong with a dslr now?
All the majors have put them on the discontinued list. Switching to mirrorless was the best thing for my images since the hassleblad.
Brilliant 🥲🥲🥲
You got this. You know what you have to do. Just do it.
I didn't get to the end, but in general I agree, only I didn't to see if you mentioned my reason. As a professional motorsport photographer, in the first half of the noughties I was on £60k, then digital cameras really kicked in. Amateurs would take maybe 3,000 pics, choose the best and put them on Facebook for free download. I slashed my prices and bulked up for value but sales crashed. The typical comment was, yours are way better, but the rest are free. I tried to change direction, use social media more but you almost need to be a god to understand and benefit from it. I briefly died in 2000, now I can't be bothered to suffer for my passion.
i've died too. that's why i still do this.
26 is Misleading. a lot of pros are still using higher end DSLR cameras. there are great deals out there and give you the same results that new cameras give you. I like your advise will you be my mentor lol
Every brand has discontinued DSLRs. It’s not my choice. It’s just what it is. If mirrorless didn’t exist I wouldn’t be talking about them. Depends on what you shoot. Yes many still shoot them. But I wouldn’t be looking for a DSLR if I shot people.
Gold mine
Dude.. but I really want the R5! Why are you attacking me??
lol. If you have the paper it will pay for itself!
Thanks. Needed some perspective. A little ass kick never did any harm. Cheers.
#4 has to be the worst situation to ever be in. Most of the others have more to do with personal defects we have to work on in our self. But someone with all the motivation, drive and inspiration to move in the right dirrections and doo the work, will be crushed and destroyed if they enter into a relationship with a controlling Narcissistic person who does not support work or creative efforts that isn't about them and their interests.
this one seems to have struck a cord with many of my viewers. the mother of my kids isn't with me anymore because of what i do. but 13 years later, she's now hella envious and supportive and now asking me how she should start her own shit. it ends relationships. i've been there.
¿Por qué escogiste tinta negra para tatuarte?
No logro entenderlo... 🤔
está bien si no lo entiendes. es para mi. La tinta de color no se ve bien en las personas de raza negra. Consulta cualquier partido de la NBA de cualquier jugador. No soy sólo yo. ¿Eso ayuda? Qué pregunta tan extraña para un canal de fotografía. es parte de mi autoexpresión. que se trata de mí, no de ti.
One more things aint taking your camera everytime with you.
Hey guys.
4 - choose a partner that makes you feel guilty hahahaha been there, done it, worn the T shirt :-)
same. funny, my x supports me now that things are flyin and says, "you were always so dedicated, so determined"
i am so damn gulty :(
I'm in the Building
30 not understanding the market you work in.
Most of the big jobs are in NY London and Paris if you are not in one of those it will be hard to get a career step up nowdays ( even tho competition is extremely high there)
i work in toronto. i work for international magazines everywhere. i've worked in london and new york, miami, LA. it's about the work. and thinking bigger. and mostly your own personal attitude. attitude and public perception is worth more than most. high end work is in demand, no matter where you hang you hat. be willing to get on a plane and you can work anywhere. goes back to i can or i can't. watch. ruclips.net/video/5CDdMTkPm4M/видео.htmlsi=12LZrY60zdKGvGFh
I didn't watch this yet but I hope that crabs in the barrel mentality from other photographers, a market that is actually kind of trash, the devaluing of photography overall, and also there aren't any photography jobs out there. It's a lifelong hustle and many folks aren't built for that.
You become a great photographer and what jobs are you out there looking for. You spend all your time soliciting, you might as well have been a sales guy and don't have to make any damn photos.
I'll check the video out tomorrow Sorry just ranting. It's a ugly business and that's a even bigger reason why people don't move forward. That's not even taking it to account how critically important your network your location hell even the algorithm working in your favor plays a part. While you're doing all of this training, how are the bills getting paid. How are you going to afford that studio space much less studio time. Where are your models coming from. What about your makeup artist Where's your team. It's a complete some of its parts.
The truth is photography as a business is not meant for most people. Because it actually sucks.
Just click stevecarty.com/archive I’m 3 decades in. I have lots to say.
Cool video but dang man the sarcastic “advice” is mad confusing. To the point where you mixed it up towards the end and accidentally did it when you were doing the “correct” answers. Just do a normal video man lol.
