- Remembering Raymond Shulman, who left us a year ago today. Think of him with kindness.
The video features the track "Freedom's Child" which was written before Gentle Giant's first album. It is a ballad influenced by 1960's soul. Видеоклипы
I'm a 14 years-old who's learning bass and pretending to play the violin just because of Ray Shulman. His basslines fill me with joy every time i play them, and i hope that when i become a violinist, i can play his compositions like he did. May his soul rest in peace.
You CAN do it! Great goal, may you find ecstasy through music!
@thomassicard3733 Thanks! Sure I'll find it!
Само напред мали,желим ти среће и успеха у твојим жељама.
Настави да сањаш.
Поздрав из Србије.

I'm 18 years old as of today, and I discovered Gentle Giant about 3 years ago while walking in the middle of Paris, and as a bassist I was absolutely entranced by the virtuosity ans magic that came from Ray's playing, it made the trip about as magical as it could be. And today I still love and adore Gentle Giant, it's left such an impact on me and I've been so inspired by everything Ray has contributed to the musical world. Peace and Love to Ray and all his friends and family ✌️
Nice to hear the younger generation are enjoying what Ray brought to music generally, he was a great bass player and multi faceted musician who was comfortable playing wind instruments as well as bass/guitars. Much missed.
Yeah... I was introduced to GG in 1975. My sister, Katherine, brought home the Free Hand LP.
I LOVE all of their music!!!
A band that truly lives up to the name. Gentle, sweet, humble folks who excelled in their multi-instruments and complemented each other to produce unique work that exceeds the sum of individual components. Always thinking of them with kindness. ^_^ --- _"Pulling up the anchor, letting go the rope"_ and waving from Istanbul.
Ray sounds like he was as good a guy as he was a musician. We can all wish to be remembered so fondly. So long, Ray.
I saw gentle giant in 1972 with Tull!! The giant was the best group I’ve ever seen!! Technically incredible and a blast to watch!!
Gentle Giant were in a class by themselves and one of the greatest prog bands of all time. The finest live shows I ever saw were the three times I was lucky enough to catch them in concert. Ray was one of the best prog bassists (right there with Squire) ever and had THE best live bass sound you could imagine. Oh, for a time machine...
Greatest band of all times
A great most original Band! R.I.P. Thanks! ✌️🎻🙂😎
Ray was a hero of mine as were the whole group. Music of surpassing freshness, skill and creativity. Thank you, Ray.
Ray was the creative powerhouse behind the most singular and inventive band I ever knew. May he rest in rock and roll peace.
I’m not anywhere near any rocker or any person really in their 60s,70s, but having grown up on Gentle Giant before any other prog rock band if you want to fit them in that mould even, music is timeless and Ray the consummate musician was an integral part of gentle giant then, now, and forever. R.I.P Ray Shulman.
R.i.p to one of the best to ever do this prog thing. His presence in the live dvd's is so awesome, commanding, confident, skilled.
Beautiful tribute, gentlemen; terrific choice as well in underpinning it with "Freedom's Child," as it features some of Ray's sweetest violin lines. Just yesterday I was listening to "As Old As You're Young" and focusing (again) on the bass part... and as usual, shaking my head in wonder, thinking "who else but Ray could have come up with something that INSANE, yet perfect for the song." What a brilliant, imaginative, creative mind; still grateful it was unleashed on the world. ❤
we do think of him with kindness, as GG's music greatly made our teenage years less chaotic; indeed kinder.
I was fortunate enough to see The Boys in the Band many times during their tenure and was always amazed by Ray's incredible talent, versatility, and how easy and natural he made it all seem (as did the whole band). Gentle Giant radically transformed by musical perception, standards and expectations and still, 50+ years later, they remain my favorite band and, IMO, the GOAT!
Genius in a band who took prog rock one step beyond & I’m not quite sure this band got it’s just due 🙏 bless his soul
Gotta admit,I'm a late bloomer lol, only REALLY got into the band a few yrs back..I knew of them, like a cpl songs, but just didn't put time into getting more material..THEN I DID.lol..saved some clams and got the Unburied Treasure Cds...that practically covers EVERYTHING..man oh man, these boys are just smoking!!love watching the videes where Ray just hands Derek the bass, goes over and grabs trumpet and just keeps on choogling! All u guys are so wonderful and blessed with the multi-instrumental talent..I can play drums, some guitar, some keyboard...
Gentle Giant:HOLD ME ALE!!😂
Hands down u guys are GREAT!!!Ray always seems happy and full of energy and just loves being in such a great band!!!yh it's not mainstream, BUT WHO CARES..it just proves its not about how good talent is!!if it's not snappy and poppy ,the the suites don't think it's gonna make money!!sooooo wrong, cause alot of us just love the MUSIC...these chaps made such great MUSIC!!!
RIP Ray Shulman-well done mate,...well done✌️🥃✌️🥃🤟
A very nice tribute. Gentle Giant inpired me more than any band I can think of. They opened the door to progressive music and held a foot there so that so many could follow. Rest in Peace
We are all so fortunate to live in a time where this great man and his work can live on forever in the recordings that were made. The body of Ray may be gone, but his spirit is not, and we all get to hear a little piece of that spirit every time we listen.
I saw Ray & GG perform 3 times here in CT (USA) in '75, '77, & '80. A fabulous musician/composer, and a fantastic band. Also loved his production work (esp. for The Sundays)....Ray Shulman, a Giant among Giants. Never forget. 🎸🎤🎻 🎺🪈🎧🎚️🎛️ ✨🙏🏼 ❤
The "Missing Piece" tour in '77 is when I saw them. The band was just fantastic! I sat pretty much almost center 9th row. Couldn't ask for better seats.
Wow! Such a beautiful tribute to an amazing musician, composer, producer and human. I was one who was in the audience 4 times watching Ray and his wonderful band mates play the most amazing music back in those days. I hope Ray and the rest of the Boys In The Band know the impact they made on so many others then and even still today. Bravo for your life well lived Ray.
Ray was truly a ‘gentle giant’ of musical talent. I’ve been a GG fan for decades, but it was only in recent years watching interviews that I learned that Ray was not only a brilliant multi-instrumentalist, he also wrote a large percentage of their best songs! The word genius is thrown around a lot, but I think Ray deserves that title. I am so thankful to Ray and the rest of GG for a huge legacy of truly amazing music.
Ray was a genius, who, along with his bandmates, gave us some of the most amazing music ever produced! Best to all~
Part of one of the most original bands we have had the privilege of listening to. How could we not think of him kindly?
As long as people love great music he will never be forgotten.
Musicista con la " M" maiuscola. Un grandissimo artista, di un gruppo che ha fatto la storia della musica. Ovunque tu sia, leggenda per sempre ❤
Can’t believe it’s been a year already. Hands down my favorite bassist and multi-faceted musician. His talent had no bounds.
he was a monster on bass. Nobody had that kind of tone, using a pick on a P-bass, while playing such intricate lines. I feel blessed to have seen him and GG perform live back in the day. Thank you, Ray!
The first time I heard GG was live I was absolutely blown away. The next day went out a got 3 friends they have been my favorite band ever since. Much of that is because of Ray his outstanding compositions and stellar musicianships! Thank you, you are missed.
God Bless Ray. What an amazing musician. I was in total awe of him when I first saw Giant. 1975, Santa Monica Civic, for Power and the Glory. Ray did an insane violin solo and pieces of the bow were flying out into the orchestra pit. It was magical. I got to see them a few times and they always seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage. Fantastic concerts.
I view Ray as my Musial Big Brother, I started on Violin, then Trumpet & Guitar & Bass & Keyboard 😎 I’m from Motown & Gentle Giant is 1 of my favorite Bands 🥰 I also grew up with Ray Parker Jr. & Nate Watts, Stevie Wonder’ s Music Director 😎🎶
A moving (tears) tribute to one of the greatest musician/composer/performers that I have encountered in my years of being a music fan, he continues to inspire me and many others...his talent will live forever !!! R.I.P. Ray
A very touching and moving tribute . GG were one of my all time favourite Prog / Rock bands and l remember buying "Aquiring the Taste" back in the early 70's and being mightily impressed then . After that l stayed a devotee over the years and remain in awe of their inventive , adventurous and original music and their creativity and superb musicianship . They were in a class of their own and Ray was an integral part of this great and truly progressive band . RIP .
Mr Weathers and Mr Moraz quotes were the best definitions on Ray's work. Love his legacy. RIP.
Tremendous musician, and seemed that he had lot of fun playing with you. RIP Ray 😢
A very loving and moving tribute to this brilliant man. We all miss him greatly. He was the very embodiment of Renaissance Man.
How lovely to read all these wonderful lines, Ray made me starting the violin, I will always be grateful to him!
One of the best musician and bass player and so modest! RIP.
My favorite bass player
I'm still heart broken...
I discovered GG and Ray’s work via a more experienced musician in the 90’s. It changed the way I listened to music and Ray’s playing inspired me to learn as many instruments as possible. Thank you for all the music and the endless imagination! 😎🎶✌️
What a legend. So sorry for your loss Derek and Phil.
GG will always be one of my favorite bands. So original, always surprising. Ray’s writing and playing were essential to their greatness. RIP, Ray.
Rest in peace Ray Shulman! An integral part of one of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time. Legends never die 🫡
A Legendary Musician who will continue to inspire the next generation, thanks for all the great tunes. ❤
The reason I dropped six strings for four. Thank you Ray for all the wonderful sounds you made.
This made me tear up a bit. One of my favourite bass players of all time! 😭🙏🖤 RIP Ray!! 🖤🖤🖤
Ray is my favourite Giant in GG (and Derek, Kerry, Phil, Gary, John, and Malcolm)
Here's a heartfelt THANK YOU from a giant fan since 1970, then aged 9. Overwhelmingly happy that Freedom's Child was chosen to accompany this beautiful tribute. A hidden classic, after all these years one of my absolute GG favorites.
Think of him with kindness with you, Maestros, friends, brothers.
It was not only a joy to hear Ray play, but also to watch him! He really loved what he did. I wish I could have seen Gentle Giant live, but at least I can enjoy the records and videos. Ray won't be forgotten and his music lives on!
Such a beautiful tribute to one of the best musicians of all time.
RIP my favorite musician, the best kindred spirit.
What a human and professional legacy.
OK, my tear ducts are all cleared out now. I just know he was a mensch.
I love you guys.
One of my favorite musicians to see on stage. Twice I had front row seats to GG shows. Ray was unforgettable.
Lovely video with some great tributes. Ray wrote and recorded some of the finest music put to tape, he will be greatly missed, but not forgotten 🙏
RIP Ray Shulman. By all accounts as wonderful a person as he was a musician.
The first GG I heard was The Power and the Glory back in 1977 and was instantly hooked. I never got a chance to see them play but did meet Gary Green at a small gig in Chicago a few years back. Everyone in the band were incredible musicians. The guitar duets with Ray and Gary were absolutely amazing!! Ray was truly inspirational. RIP Ray.
thanks Ray , Thanks a lot to GG. With solemnity and gratitude, I honour your memorie. I've learned to enjoy medieval and renaissance music for you
Ray was a brilliant musician. Thank you for the music Ray.
i was so fortunate to have seen gentle giant when they came to my university in march, 1973 - they were touring with "octopus" in the u.s. and they came to wilmington, north carolina on a bill with tranquility and jo jo gunne-very nice people
RIP he was incredible
Favorite musician of all time saw them twice in the 70s when I was a kid! What a band!
What a tribute guys. Bring tears to my eyes. We miss him so much.
Thank you Ray for all the many hours of joy you brought into my life. Rest in Peace. Thank you Gentle Giant for this wonderful tribute.
A main ingredient in giant!!
An amazing tribute to an amazing musician. His compositions and bass playing have kept me going in the best and worst of times over the past 40 years. They have been such an essential part of who I am it really shocked me last year to learn of his passing. I'm going to go outside, listen to three friends, work in my garden and bask in his greatness.
Beautiful tribute. Thank you for the amazing music Ray. Your legacy will be here forever
A GIANT AMONG LEYENDS!
Gentle Giant was one of my all time favorite bands and one I was able to see live twice in (at the time) remote Seattle. I still listen to GG today and marvel at the audacious composition. Even though I am a guitarist, I learned numerous Ray bass parts because Ray was such a tasty writer.
Ray made incredible music with Gentle Giant. He will be missed.
My goodness, it has already been a year since we lost him? This band continues to be a huge influence in my life, and will be till my last days. RIP dear Ray
Gentle Ray Giant: to know and to love!
Beautiful tribute...👍 R.I.P. Ray.❤
RIP Gentle Genious
Criminally under-rated by the so called music `press` of the `70`s. A master craftsman; integral to the sheer brilliance of the GG sound. Had the pleasure of seeing the band play live in the UK several times as a younger man. A fitting and heartfelt tribute.
I wish i was there to see him perform. Rest in peace
A real genius! Thanks for all these performances in Montreal!
RIP Ray. i will remember him forever
I'm sad I never got to see them play. R.I.P.
Saw you guys several times and always was blown away! Miss you guys and miss Ray especially! Fond memories!
He remains alive in all the music and the videos, which I return to again and again like old friends. Such a talent. Thank you for this lovely video.
🥲
Cheers from GG loving Brazil.
RIP Raymond Shulman.
Ray will never be forgotten! A giant remains in memory ❤🕯🎵🎶👂
Nice Got to see Ray 4 times. Brilliant. ✨️🙏✨️
Thanks for doing this. I remember when we just expected brilliant new sounds would be there, every day, on the radio. Little did we realize just how lucky we were to have Ray and his generation of truly brilliant composers and musicians to bring us what became the music of our lives. RIP Raymond Schulman.
So much pain in the world right now and this simply adds to it. RIP R.S. ♥️
One of the best musicians ever.
Ray was Good in all its manifestations.
So very sad to hear. One of many but perhaps the greatest one I never got to meet in person. My condolences to his great brothers and his family 🔥💦❤️
Покойся с миром! Ты был великим артистом. Gentle Giant была одной из величайших рок групп. и каждая из нот ею сыгранных останется в истории музыки навсегда. RIP.
Thanks for this touching video...I won't remember him: He is always alive with me as long as I can listen to the music he made
An idol
RIP
a moving tribute to an immense musical moving force
So many great things he did with GG, but for me his defining legacy is the bassline in "Way of Life". He invented proto prog / disco there !
RIP Ray.
For me it is 54 years of love and fond remembrance! Thank you for the review -
Love Gentle Giant.
