The song is basically a tribute to the mother of Kalush'es frontman (the one in the magenta hat). The translation is not the best, too literary in my opinion. There were a lot of difficult to translate metaphores though: it really sounds good in Ukrainian, but almost nonsencical in English. He basically sings that he appreciates what his mother gave him and how she brought him up and he confesses that he wasn't the best son and made her worry because of all troubles he had got into. So, in the end he sings that he should be more mindful and not to forget what she did for him when he succeed as an artist. And in the refrain one can hear "liuli-liuli" part, which is a word that one can meet in Ukrainian lullabies , and then he makes a comparison between nature (blooming field/glade) and his mother that only ages with time (image of eternal and ephemeral side by side). And in the second part of the refrain he asks her to sing a lullaby once again.
This is though quite a rough description as well

Hey, some properly translated lyrics: ... :
    Stefania, mama, mama, Stefania
The field is in bloom, but her hair is turning gray
    Sing me a lullaby, mama
I want to hear your dearest words again
She lulled me asleep and she gave me the rhythm
And maybe my will can't be taken away because she gave it to me too
Maybe she knew even more than Solomon ever did I will walk the broken roads to get to you, always
She wouldn't wake me up, never wake me during a heavy storm
She'd take away two «fig signs» from grandma like they are bullets (NOT literally, local superstition reference)
She always knew me well, could not be received
And when she was very tired, she lulled me like this...
    Lyuili-lyuli-lyuli...
    Stefania, mama, mama, Stefania
The field is in bloom, but her hair is turning gray
    Sing me a lullaby, mama
I want to hear your dearest words again
I'm not in diapers anymore, but mom, but mom, stop it!
No matter how much I grow, she buys me clothes to fit me when I'm bigger
I am not a small child, but she keeps worrying about me

As I watch on from Australia my heart aches tonight for Europe! I pray that all participants in Eurovision are respected and that they all send a message of Peace at the event! I am reminded by Nicoles winning entry in 1982 I think it was. Peace Europe! Thinking of you all tonight. "A little loving, a little giving
to build a dream for the world we live in
    a little patience and understanding
for our tomorrow - a little peace
a little sunshine, a sea of gladness
to wash away all the tears of sadness
a little hoping, a little praying
for our tomorrow - a little peace
I feel I’m a leaf in the november snow
I fell to the ground, there was no one below
So now I’m helpless alone with my song
just wishing the storm was gone"

This song has gotten an additional layers of meaning after the war started… those fields are going to eventually bloom even after bombing… but… all moms are going gray… :((( also Mom here is additionally seen as a Motherland…
This has more emotional evolvement then Alina’s song. Though the vocals can’t even be compared, obviously. They are not vocalists… that’s rap… rap never won the Eurovision before…
Many people, who don’t even speak Ukrainian get goose bumps… I do. Gotta say… not a rap fan, but combination of rap and goosebumps - that’s something new for me…

And Jamirlsquai's brother in sprirt is fab. It's all fab. I also think he sings a quarter tone not flat? If this isn't in top 5 I'm a potato. This group won the televote but only came third with the juries. Alina Pash (withdrawn entry) won the jury vote but came second with the televote. This is why she originally won by one point. There were 8 songs in the national final and all were pretty good to be fair, though Alina Pash was the one likely to do the best from a Eurovision prospective.

Nice reaction Coach! This Kalush song Stephania actually is NOT a "replacement" for the song you've liked so much. It's more like - the "truth finally prevailed" situation. Female artist was disqualified for submitting fraudulent official document. On top of that, the vote count was corrupt, favoring the female artist. When the real numbers were finally revealed, there were TWICE as many votes for Kalush than there were for Alina! Ukrainian people chose Kalush's song hands down!

No. It’s not on the track. He is playing live. 💛💙🇺🇦brilliant job Ukraine.
The name of the group is pronounced with stress on letter “A” not “u”. “kAlush orchestra”
The instrument he is playing is called tilinka. It’s not a flute. It’s Ukrainian ethnic instrument. And it’s different from sopilka that was played last year y A_GO band.
Song is dedicated to his mother Stefania and I think to Ukraine as our beautiful Motherland.
The beginning of the song is a Ukrainian lullaby.
Here is everything. Rap. Breakdancing. Syncopated beats. Gorgeous light job as the backstage. Ukrainian folklore notes. Ukrainian gorgeous costumes are amazing. And the guy who is breakdancing is called “kylymman” which means carpet man. His costume covers all his body and it’s coloured with Ukrainian ornaments.
I am so proud to be Ukrainian. And I am Canadian with Ukrainian roots. Canada stayed with you. 🇨🇦🇺🇦💛💙🇺🇦🇨🇦
Ps. Back ground in lightning in the form of Ukrainian guzul embroidery patterns. So are costumes and kylemman body suit. Noone ever saw his face. It’s a stage image. So cool 😎

I personally prefer this one. Even though I love Eurovision, I'm not a huge pop fan & am very particular in the music I listen to. This is why last year was so strong for me, with lots of different genres involved, including my favourite, metal (in any of its variants). This song has more character than Alina's so it's a better fit for what I like. I've seen some comments on here & elsewhere about pity votes. I don't think this entry needs them as it's strong enough on its own. It's in my top 5 & would be even without the war.

I really Like this song/entry also Ukraine especially past years have a great mix between traditional/Folklore over a modern nowadays beat/backtrack (Go A "Shum") Again the flute I guess it's a 1 octave playable instrument where you use your vocal ability or kinda like inhaling and exhaling on a harmonica to make the in between notes between one octave ( sure correct me if I'm wrong) but you see his finger blocking and releasing the end of the instrument so that I think is one octave and in between he is using his breating/voice .... but i do think on the track it is recorded ... If you listen closely in the last part the flute is not on tune and he kinda "overblows" it so it pitches one note overtuned/sqeals...(original Eurovision entry video on 3:03/3:04). (again could also be recorded that way by accident ) Again a great entry from Ukraine and very much respect ! Greetz A.

Personally I prefer this song a bit more the Alina's (not saying its better) because it just hits home for me. Its dedicated to his mom and also apologizes for being a bad son when he was younger (if I've been told that correctly). I wish I could do the same. I'm not even someone who likes rap in general but here it fits weirdly well and it doesn't overstay its welcome.
Of course Alina's song was absolutely beautiful and a masterpiece (I'm not sure but j think she was disqualified for faking something? Could someone tell me more about ut and why it was enough to disqualify her?) But I still think this song on its own has a good chance to win. Lithuania, Norway and the Netherlands might be tough competition though.
I still like shum the most though, very little can beat that for me XD

  • @cougarten
    @cougarten 2 года назад

The flute is playing overtones, so it does make many notes without many inputs. Like a fanfare does without any valves and old horns would change "length" by the players stuffing their hands in the horn.
About the singing harmonics: could it be that it's just the style to sing the high notes a bit low? for comparison: ruclips.net/video/vLcz-AC2zj8/видео.html
but I don't have that much of a trained ear, not sure where the melancholy comes from.

So I have a question that I’ve wondered about for a long time. I don’t fully understand music, so I’m still learning about pitch etc. What I don’t understand is how you can say a note is out of tune if you’ve never heard the song before? How are you able to tell the note is out rather than it was written that way? Not a criticism, because I genuinely would love to understand how it works?

The way we currently structure sounds isn't how they are in nature. Current tuning has 12 notes or pitches, but there's a lot of sounds in-between. These in-between sounds don't usually come out on strictly tuned instruments (like a piano), but are very easy to achieve on something that requires an effort to get the correct pitch - such as singing or, say, a trumpet. Still, we are used to the way that sounds sound, so we expect them to fall into something that we are more used to. Think about the slide-in note in the beginning of the Rhapsody in Blue - it's a very good example of how many sounds are between two other sounds. Fun fact: the current 12 pitch tuning is relatively recent, there have been other historical tuning systems before that.

i liked Alina Pash more than this but anyways it was my second best option from Ukraine this year. i think with Alina they had a strong chance to win, but with this they will probably get a top 10, but they won't win.
PS, I know you got enough with the actual official songs BUT.... can you later react to some non qualifiers from national finals? i'd love to see your reaction to Rigoberta Bandini's "Ay Mama" (from Spain) and NorthKid's "Someone" (from Norway)

It sounds like it could be an upbeat, cheerful song, but it's actually the opposite. Certainly when you add in the context of the war in Ukraine 2022

The translations were not quite correct. The lyrics are about the rapper's mother (called Stefania), while using his mother as a metaphor for his mother-land (Ukraine), that as you might know, while gets heavy losses from the aggressor side of Russia, stills strong.
If you "don't need diapers" (that's still okay, I don't judge), I heavily recommend to watch the music video, as it shows more Ukrainian mothers, either fighting in the battles, or looking for their children.
    Stay strong, Ukraine!

It's a nice melody, it's upbeat, can be played in clubs, so it would have done pretty well any ways.
Let's be honest, no matter how many times they are off key, and how much, I for one would be surprised if they don't win because of the sympathy vote and how most people just want to stick it to Putin .

I don't think there are notes out... it's just the style... the harmony is basically one note. Don't like this one.

    Stefania mum mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning grey
    Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native word

She rocked me; gave me rhythm and probably the power of will; did not take, but she gave
Probably knew even more and from Solomon
I will always walk to you by broken roads
She will not awaken, won’t wake, me in strong storms
She will take two fig signs from grandma, as if they were bullets
She knew me very well; she was not deceived, like she was very tired; she rocked me in time
    Lyuli lyuli lyuli…

    Stefania mum mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning gray
    Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native word

I’m not in diapers but ma but ma, enough, like if I did not grow up to grow to pay for things
I’m not a small child, she still loses her temper, I walked, “like the slag would hit you” [Ukrainian curse]
You are all young oh mother at the peak, if I do not value the guardianship at the peak of glory I’m in the dead end
Kill the peak that peak, I would sing with my love
    Lyuli lyuli lyuli…

    Stefania mum mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning gray
    Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native word

    Stefania mum mum Stefania
