Such an underrated song. The whole "Bedtime Stories" album is fantastic. Madonna rocketed to superstardom in the 1980s, but she was at her creative peak in the 1990s (starting with "Like a Prayer" in 1989). You should definitely check out the full albums in this era ("Like a Prayer", "Erotica", "Bedtime Stories", and "Ray of Light")!

I remember I loved this song when I first heard it. And then the video as well where she’s walking through Harlem to just show “life”.
The “Secret” song I always saw it as her revealing that the secret is as obvious as she states, “Happiness lies in your own hand”. You control your destiny. And that’s the secret. I also felt it was about a higher power. “You gave me back the paradise that I thought I lost for good. You helped me find the reasons ‘why’. It took me by surprise that you understood.”
And how beautiful she was in this era...

My conclusion is -
Madonna is singing about an 'awakening' or 'transition' that she experienced with a very special person and they went into a spiritual journey together - Madonna at the time of releasing Secret was delving deep into her own spiritual awakening.
Madonna's search led her to practice yoga, study Buddhism, Taoism, and the Art of War -- a 16th century military treaty -- and read about the early Christians before she found her spiritual home via a friend. It's 'Kaballah' (it is similar to Hermetic philosophy).
"As above, so Below; as Below, so above." And, in the degree that Man realizes the existence of the Indwelling Spirit immanent within his being, so will he rise in the spiritual scale of life. This is what spiritual development means-the recognition, realization, and manifestation of the Spirit within us (Happiness lies in your own hand).

Madonna's voice is so smooth hear, love the mellow urban vibe. (Killer dance remix of Secret, called Junior's Sound Factory Mix) Bedtime Stories was right before Evita, where Madonna makes another musical shift. Maybe try You Must Love Me or Don't Cry for Me Argentina next

I used to listen to this song on repeat when I first discovered it. It was good to see you like it too.

This song is about a lover having a secret. The video ends with Madonna uniting with her lover and their child. "Secret" combined the pop and R&B genres. It peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and the remix version peaked at number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs.

I love how deftly this chick handled his thinking the kid was the secret - she was so kind and yet held her own and didn't just agree. she's got great sense of self and remained open. cool.

Honestly, I'd say the key takeaway is "happiness lies in your own hand" meaning the "secret" is within you. Or possibly in finding that special "soul mate" kind of love, either with a partner or, yes, even a child.
