- We've had the HMG Ultamid 2 for over 7 years now, and after hundreds of nights using it, we are sharing what we like and don't like about the tent.
In this review of the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2, we show how we use the tent as a couple, and what components are now starting to fail.
Overall we have been very happy with the Ultamid 2, but there are now lighter options and some unique designs that we are interested in!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I just bought an Ultamid 4 for winter camping… making room for my wife and/or one of our teens.
It's an awesome tent in the snow and storms! There will be plenty of room for all of you in it, that's our favorite part of the tent
thanks for the description, it serves as a reference. hopefully you will continue to make more videos like this one.
For the zipper not zipping all the way just squeeze it like you said , it will fix it . Don’t crush it just a small adjustment
Thanks, I've been avoiding it since I didn't know how much pressure to do and didn't want to mess it up. After reading your comment I did it today and got it to work. I actually had to squeeze decently hard. I haven't pitched it to test it but in my hand it closes all the way and stays closed when I try to pull them apart!
@@SummitForWellness ah right on! I remember when I learned that I thought it was magic and I felt dumb with some bags I’ve thrown away cause of that, happy camping stay safe
7-1/2 years , I think you did well. Yes plenty of new designs to choose from. How does that center pole do in snow, does it sink over time?
Yes it does sink a bit in snow so you need to pack down a pad as much as possible before you set up the tent. So when we first get to a site, we'll keep our splitboards on our feet and stomp as much as possible to create a pretty firm ground. If it's cold enough, you could figure out where the center pole will be and pour some water on the snow and let it freeze, then it becomes much sturdier.
@@SummitForWellness wow never heard of the water idea, that’s great how simple thanks
good review!! just curious what's your next tent
Great question, we are going to try out the Durston Xmid Pro 2+ and will have videos on it soon. It's going to be a little different style, I'm guessing there will be less room inside for gear which I usually like having it in with us, but the pitch looks very simple and it's much lighter!
Great review
Hi! Really nice review. Can you please tell me what are you using to strap the trekking poles? Many thanks!
We just use Voile straps to hold them together but I've forgotten them on trips before and used paracord and that worked even better actually!
@@SummitForWellness Cheers!
Try using magnets to keep the net up against the wall.
That's actually a really good idea, thanks for that! It might cause some condensation to drip inside but we usually don't have too many issues with condensation
@@naorfilm I would assume a couple small magnets you could get at a craft store would be plenty strong enough
Guess I got a lemon. A tent that leaks is trash. Mine leaks like a faucet under light rain. Had to buy DCF tape to fix as HMG customer service wasn't interested in helping me. Mine leaked bad at the mesh seams. Like through the seems where the mesh is seen in.Premium price for a leaks tent that I had to go fix myself. in. More HMG for me.
😮 They wouldn't even take a look at it?! That's pretty messed up, for an expensive tent they should've at least looked at it for you. That's a bummer, hopefully your fix makes it usable now at least.
@@SummitForWellness they asked for a bunch of pictures for consideration and gave me some rediculous waiting list. I felt it wasn't good enough. Im testing it this weekend. I was so stoked about this tent. Looked stupid next to $100 walmart tents that week. Great Channel btw.
Wound up buying the Durston Xmid. Holly shit!!!! Plus I emailed Dan inquiring about guyline specs and he responded within a day. The dude is outstanding!!!!! I'm now a Durston guy.
@@philliptaylor2870 I got the xmid too but haven't tested it out! I heard the guylines are short so if that's the case I'll have to modify them and put on longer ones but I'm excited to test it soon!
When I got the HMG Ultamid HMG was pretty small still and they were awesome to talk to. Over the years though they got big, their team that I knew have mostly left, and now I hear of a lot of issues internally which is a huge bummer. Durston is pretty small and I hope doesn't run into those growing pains at any point
You need to dump the tent and get a free-standing ..nemos are lightweight
Nemos can't stand the weight of snow or high winds. Lots of areas we camp have winds that'll tear up the Nemo.
Two hobbits describing how big it is
😂😂😂 Not wrong
