hey Dan check your stake bag for a line with a clip tied to it. My “The One’’ had this and its to tie in the tent and have a clip for a headlamp. Hopefully its in there for you to solve that issue for you
The clothesline is one of my favorite features that separates this tent from its competitors. I loop my headlamp on the line and hang my wet socks and sweaty bandana up at night.
When you were demonstrating how tough it was to unzip the netting, there is a small tab on the bathtub of the tent that you can put the tip of your pole through, it'll keep the bathtub taut. That should make it easier to unzip
There is also a loop of cord that can be put around the pole about halfway up from the floor. This helps keep the screen a little tighter making it a little easier to work the zipper one-handed. Stacking our the corners of the bathtub also helps but that means carrying four additional stakes.
I've got over 50 nights in my Gossamer Gear The One tent and I'm still really happy with it. Suffers from condensation like any single wall tent but its super easy to set up (granted I have lots of practice), packs up really small and is plenty big for me and some room to spread out. Most of the time I keep the tent in a small cuben fiber bag in one of my side water bottle pockets. I have the older model and its important to note they made the newest models a little lighter but are ever so slightly shorter. Just something to consider for taller people.
Dan, this is the first video I've watched of yours in probably 6 months. Not that you have boring content. Just consider me the college friend who comes back to visit once a year. And then I binge watch content for a week straight, like we're just catching up. But then I have to go back home to work and my normal life. Keep up the awesome work!
Glad to hear you like it. I'm on my 2nd year in the Two, after one season in the One (and an inexpensive but solid tent prior to that). I'm 5'7 and have found the Two to be palatial for one person. I love that I can have all my gear inside the tent instead of needing to use the roomy vestibules. I haven't had the Two in any rainstorms. However, the One performed beautifully in a thunderstorm on the AT a couple of years ago. Based on that experience, and the fact that I'm on year 3 with my Gossamer Gear Mariposa pack, I'm completely sold on the quality of Gossamer Gear products. I didn't even think about their hiking poles. Thanks for the tip!
Ok so let’s do a review on the X Mid by Dan the Man Durston. I own both 1p and 2p versions and I can’t speak more highly of this Trekking Pole tent. But I’d rather here you do it. Love the channel bro, you’re just missing a Dwight Schrute.
I've had the X-mid 2P for several years and it corrects every downside that was mentioned in this video imho, I love it!!! To me this seems like a Duplex made from nylon. I own the duplex also but haven't used it much because of the condensation issues.
Early 2020 I was looking for a tent. I did consider this one, but went w/ the X-Mid 2p for a few reasons: a real 2p tent, sil-poly that doesn't sag, and double wall for all the lakes I'm around. It does weight more than the GG.
Why skimp on the tent stakes? I've never understood that. Gossamer could create better stakes than the MSR and include them while also selling them separately.
I've spent quite a few nights in my Two and had zero condensation issues in a very humid NC summer. You just need to pitch it high. Best example, spent a night beside a river with 2 adults and a dog in the tent and zero condensation, just be careful with the pitch. Dan missed 2 things in his set up, should have put the trekking pole tip in the grommet, makes the zipper work much better. Also be didn't install the interior clothes line where he could hang his headlamp, etc.
Hey I’ve got a ONE and a TWO and really enjoy them… I noticed that you forgot something,,,, put that tab in the middle bottom through the bottom of your trekking pole and the tent will work way better. take care 🎅🏻🏴☠️🏔
@@millertime2327 Yeah I understand, sure works better with the pole through the loop. I also have the top shelf and you can put all kinds of stuff in it overhead… Take Care Buddy 🎅🏻🏴☠️🏔
@@CSLee-yu6ht I've got the top shelf as well, I love this tent and it will be my backpacking tent until I attempt my thru hike in 2030, at that point I would definitely upgrade to a DCF tent.
I've been using my Dan Durston X-mid 2p. I've been loving it. Trekking pole tent that's double walled and low weight. Only complaint is the massive footprint, though that's not a true complaint because I love the massive amount of room it gives me.
Same. I've been using Durston's tent and 40L bag for over a year in the mountains in Strathcona and on the coast. The only change I made is that I swapped out the guylines from the 2mm to a 3mm.
Ah, you're one of the lucky ones to own an X-Mid. I'm biding my time hoping to snag a 2p from the next batch that comes out. Although Dan D. recently indicated there could be further delays because of supply issues. Was hoping to see them by mid-September but that's not happening now.
@@burtwonderstone5315 I actually got the first batch release so I've had mine for about a year and a half. It came Right before the pandemic, but due to lockdownds my use last year was limited. It's well worth the wait though. I ordered in August 2019, waited until March 2020
Just got of the JMT a couple weeks ago and did 260miles/24 nights in this tent. I've also done a coupe weeks last year in the Smokies and the same in nothern PA. It did well at all. Great protection we had a few day of rain on the JMT and even hale. Condensation can be an issue at times but not overly problematic. We only had a few nights where condensation was a little more than I'd like. The tent had FAR more positives than negatives on my JMT through hike. The biggest down side and really only one that was bothersome for me is the fact that the nylon take on some water.. it does not leak at all.. but it does absorb some water. It makes the tent heavier and wet to pack away. Other than that its an excellent option if you want a big tent for gear and/or an extra person. My son and I shared the tent during our JMT thru and we had MORE than enough room for out sleeping pads and gear inside the tent. The vestibules are a dream come true for gear/shoes and packs!
Awesome! Thanks for posting this comment. I just purchased The One for my JMT trip in July about 10 minutes ago. I know a huge amount about gear, but was still a little apprehensive before buying it. I love my Gossamer Gear Mariposa and know they make good products. I have the Nemo Dragonfly 2p, which also adorbs water after a bit, and didn't want to carry a 3 pound tent on the JMT as someone that is 5'3".
Would it stop the water absorption if you spray it with a waterproof spray yourself? I’m going to do it to my cheap attoner tent and hopefully that will help if it’s rainy! I don’t know yet
Great review Dan, I'd like to give an honorable mention to the MIER ultralight trekking pole tent. It's a great tent at much less the cost and very close in comparison to the Gossamer tent you reviewed here. Great job Dan, keep up the good work... 👍
If you put the bottom of the trecking pole through the tab at the bottom of the tent then you can unzip it with one hand. I've been doing that with mine for 2 years now. Thank you for the video.
Someone may have mentioned this already but my The Two has an easy way to determine the head end from the foot. The head end of The Two has "Take Less - Do More" printed on the flap extending from the bath tub floor. The foot end is blank. Took me only about three trips before I funded this out. 🙃
You can modify anything. Z-Packs has stick on loops and clips. That’s for dyneema. So I’m not sure it will stick to nylon, especially wet. But I’m pretty sure I could find something that would stick. So you could put a guy line on the foot end.
I have that tent, it’s so light!! Did get some holes in the bathtub floor super fast! Mine came with a cord across the top on the inside you could hang a light or clothes from!!
Just finished the JMT using the One. Also used it on the Centennial Trail. I also own the Two and like it as well. Some condensation, but, for me, the weight and packability are hard to beat.
About time lol I been telling you for months to look at this tent I love it also there is a close line that you hang the light on it goes across both top corners and it holds a light with no problem the cord should have been with your spare cords and the tent stakes
Having seen the problems my friend have setting up their trekking pole tent even in benign conditions I'll say no thanks. While this may be a good compromise I think ultralight is an obsessive compulsive path I'll be avoiding. A simple to erect robust condensation friendly lightweight tent in the 2lb range works just fine for me.
Buy once. Cry once! Got the Zpack Duplex a few years ago. Was a big purchase I was hoping I wouldn't regret it and I haven't. Probably have spent 100 nights in it and I feel it was worth every penny. Know people with the Two and they all give them a thumbs 👍
Bought The One. I’m 5’11” and it’s really too short for me. I am a belly/side sleeper and often put my arm under my pillow or over my head. It’s just a little too short for me. Decent quality, but just a tad to short and my foot box or head is always rubbing the inside and getting wet. I hate when the foot of my quilt gets wet...
If I switched back to a silnylon tent, I'd go with the Six Moon Designs Lunar Duo. It was my favorite until I got the Zpacks Duplex. For me, I'm sticking with DCF tents.
I have the “one” and I quite happy with it. Its footprint is smaller but the room inside an under the vestibule is really great for one person. High quality, I agree with you. And there is a line to hang a lamp in mine (but it’s the old model) ;-)
I wanted to buy the Gossamer gear the one, but I gave up as it was always out of stock here in Sydney. Bought a six moons trekking pole tent instead. I'm in lockdown and I don't have any grass so I haven't even put it up yet. 😪
It looks like a very nice tent for the money. I assume its not made in the US for that cost. That said for the money its looks like a home run. My Duplex cost 700.00 so that's a big savings. Nice review.
Hey Dan, thanks for putting these reviews out there. Always look forward to watching them. I was lucky a few years ago and found an almost new Nemo Blaze 2p tent. It's a dual wall tent, two vestibules, with poles (tent, not trecking) included, and weighs only 2 lbs 5oz. I haven't found any tent, for the weight and functionality that compares to it, and I own many tents. I'll consider the Gossamer Gear version of this tent in dyneema (DCF), though it costs a bit more. If you have any other suggestions that compare with the Nemo Blaze 2p, I'd appreciate hearing more about them. Huge thanks
I live in the Sierra and though I love the concept and the weight savings, I couldn’t even handle the hassle of the big Agnes tiger wall semi-freestanding. Too irritating and def not good in a storm if you can’t stake it out correctly. Am happy with a free standing even though more weight and save weight in other ways.
GOAT, you speak highly of this tent, and it does look great. Would you recommend it over the Durston X-Mid Pro 1? I am aware the 2023 version is sold out but read a new version will be available at the end of October.
We gotta figure out a way to get you some of those Dan Durston tents. Its like the Gossimer gear 'the two' for tall people, with more space. The offset poles is much roomier. Also more bees for tension in the future.
Though we paid twice as much, we love our Dyneema Zpack Triplex for the 2 of us. It weighs 22oz. Yes, I realize it is very expensive but it is so nice and light and so much room for the wife and I. Also dries very fast and does not hold the water (and weight) like a nylon tent.
I too am on the Zpacks cool aid. I own the Duplex and Arch Blast and assorted other gear. I see having a light pack as freedom. I go to hike and not carry a bunch of crap. I am in my 60s and still putting in some serious miles and a big reason is Zpacks. They are also easy to deal with which is a plus.
great review. Ever thought about ditching the tent for few weeks and staying in a Teahouse? Thats right...Trekking to Base Camp Mt Everest.... A fellow medical friend and I are going to experience the epic trek next spring with an expedition group. Come on!
I hear ya on the nice tent with no stakes, spent $700 on a north face mountain 25, came with 4 snow stakes.... but there's like 16 tie out spots ......
Hey Dan. Am not familiar with this tent but @ 3:40 isn't there an anchor point on the side of the tent to put the trekking pole in which would tension the whole thing and potentially help with unzipping the door ?
I suggest to save your money. I say that because if I couldn’t fit two 25” pads I wouldn’t look at it. My Duplex was well worth $125 more and it’s 4ozs lighter. Plus it’s dyneema. I wouldn’t carry a nylon single wall. That gets wet and it doesn’t dry well. Dyneema shakes off.
Thanks for the review. I like the general concept of this tent and would love to save the weight but my concern is would it work in the mountains (I'm planning to go to Central Asia)? I mean wind & rain.
I looked at the GG The One for myself and the price was a bit much, plus I wasn't too keen on the single wall condensation issue. So I got a DD X-Mid 1P. I am still working out "the perfect pitch" but I live in Ontario where over 90% of the province is solid rock and nowhere to stick a stake! It's pretty much the same problem even with semi-freestanding and you need to stake out the rainfly.
There's a video out there on the perfect pitch. Nothing tops the geometry and the overall selling points of the X mid 1. There honestly isn't any need to purchase a 2P if you are solo
I have the Lanshan 2 and this tent looks almost tic for tac the same. I wonder what really constitutes the price difference compared to the quality of build and materials.
The Lanshan 2 is also a double walled tent so you have less condensation. In my opinion, it is a much better value than the Gossamer gear tent. Mine has held up over time so it is my recommendation.
@@ms7fam433 very true. I’ve loved my lanshan so far. There are several companies putting out similar tents and it’s hard to justify the large jump in price, unless it is the obviously more expensive Cubin Fiber materials. I personally prefer the double wall. The condensation factor is still there it just doesn’t leak onto your gear.
@@nickbaron7462 I agree. I've always used single walled trekking pole tents for backpacking; however, I'd prefer to have a double walled tent to cut down on condensation and to be able to sleep under the stars without turning into a mosquito buffet. Unfortunately, I have to keep my total pack weight to 28 lbs or less in order to be able to enjoy my trips. That means it's a single-walled for me. When a double-walled tent can give me the space and headroom at less than 2.3 lbs that the Two gives me, I'm all in. 🙂
@@HippieHikerChik I own a Duplex but my Big Agnes Tiger Wall is in that range. It has been a good tent but I prefer the Duplex at about 22 oz. As we know lightness is freedom.
But only 10D nylon tarp and floor. How do you think this tent will hold up over time? I'm especially worried of the thin floor. I realize that's what keeps it lightweight, but sometimes you can get too focused on counting ounces. One of the most recent reviews on the Gossamer Gear page for this tent states: "After my first three-week camping trip, I had to patch the mosquito net in three different places. I was very disappointed with the poor quality of the material. My last tent was with me for more then 6 years, with no need of patching the mosquito net, ever. Sliding-knot system of strings-to-stakes: half of the knots came apart by the end of the three weeks, and on one corner, the string tore and I had to retie it. Not only do i have to learn how to make these sliding knots and re-knot them on every trip, but I doubt the whole string-system that holds the whole tent together will last." That's my main concern with this tent. Will it last?
Dan, thanks for the video. As a counterpoint, what is the lightest weight Winter tent you would recommend for those of us in the north and midwest that go out in the snow below freezing.
I have a dozen tents and when I winter backpack in Utah my copper spur just wasn’t enough so I found on sale the Marmot Fortress and felt at least 5 degrees warmer in that thanks to the higher inner tent walls. Hope that helps! Having something that is freestanding is great in case the ground is frozen solid and a 2 person tent for 1 is nice. I also own the Big Agnes Battle Mountain which is also warmer but heavier than the Marmot and I don’t like the end entries. Side entries are my jam. My son uses that for Klondike scout camp and I take the Marmot.
If you’re talking about at the end of the tent to pull out so I have more room on the inside, I just tied it on the already provided loop onto the tent :-) super easy!

Huge thanks
The Bee just wanted a cameo in your review :)
Amazing Tent !!
You have to try the nemo fillow it is the best pillow hands down
GOAT, you speak highly of this tent, and it does look great. Would you recommend it over the Durston X-Mid Pro 1? I am aware the 2023 version is sold out but read a new version will be available at the end of October.
Lanshan pro 2!?!?!
Saw Xander Budnick using this tent on a really wet trip, and on the whole it kept him dry
I’m more of a hammock camper but I’m thinking about switching.
We gotta figure out a way to get you some of those Dan Durston tents. Its like the Gossimer gear 'the two' for tall people, with more space. The offset poles is much roomier.
Also more bees for tension in the future.
More bees 😂
Though we paid twice as much, we love our Dyneema Zpack Triplex for the 2 of us. It weighs 22oz. Yes, I realize it is very expensive but it is so nice and light and so much room for the wife and I. Also dries very fast and does not hold the water (and weight) like a nylon tent.
I have the Duplex and every time I pick it up for the first camp of the year I chuckle at how light it is. Best tent I've ever owned.
Looks like a Six Moons I have 👍🏼
But almost 2x the price
Great review. I’ve got this exact tent and love mine!
great review. Ever thought about ditching the tent for few weeks and staying in a Teahouse? Thats right...Trekking to Base Camp Mt Everest.... A fellow medical friend and I are going to experience the epic trek next spring with an expedition group. Come on!
Looks pretty cool especially for the price. I can see the big expensive companies coming at them hard
I hear ya on the nice tent with no stakes, spent $700 on a north face mountain 25, came with 4 snow stakes.... but there's like 16 tie out spots ......
Any chance you can review the mountain hardwear strato tent I saw you using in another video? Thanks
If your near water and the air is cooler there is condensation as well.
Hey Dan. Am not familiar with this tent but @ 3:40 isn't there an anchor point on the side of the tent to put the trekking pole in which would tension the whole thing and potentially help with unzipping the door ?
Yes there is a loop for the trekking poles
Shouldn't the pole go through that little tab below the zipper on the mesh to solve your difficulty zipping it one handed?
I suggest to save your money.
I say that because if I couldn’t fit two 25” pads I wouldn’t look at it.
My Duplex was well worth $125 more and it’s 4ozs lighter. Plus it’s dyneema. I wouldn’t carry a nylon single wall. That gets wet and it doesn’t dry well. Dyneema shakes off.
Nice info especially on height/face clearance with your height
Thanks for the review. I like the general concept of this tent and would love to save the weight but my concern is would it work in the mountains (I'm planning to go to Central Asia)? I mean wind & rain.
Nice backyard.
Looks like the West Rim Trail in your tent setup shots, I camped at the same site. Good tent review
Trent comes with a "clothes line" to hand a light orv clothes from. It attaches by the user.
imo, this tent is a silnylon version of the zpacks duplex, the differences I've noticed are negligible.
I really need a lightweight tent but $375? Wow that’s just out of my price range. Good review.
Interesting tent. How is it in wind?
That tent looks as big as mine but mine is the woods cascade three
I looked at the GG The One for myself and the price was a bit much, plus I wasn't too keen on the single wall condensation issue.
@@ZIIZ2112 I'm pretty sure I've seen them all!
Hey Dan, did you noticed that there Is a grommet that you can put the trekking pole in at the front? love your videos
Dan,
Reply if interested in the Foothills trail.
@@HippieHikerChik check out the Lanshan 2. It is 2.4.
@@HippieHikerChik I own a Duplex but my Big Agnes Tiger Wall is in that range. It has been a good tent but I prefer the Duplex at about 22 oz. As we know lightness is freedom.
Do you like this one more than the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2? And how do you deal with the condensation?
A small piece of shammy cloth works wonders to wipe down the inside before I pack up. Bandana in a pinch.
The Durston X-Mid pro is far superior. Lighter, excellent design.
But only 10D nylon tarp and floor. How do you think this tent will hold up over time? I'm especially worried of the thin floor. I realize that's what keeps it lightweight, but sometimes you can get too focused on counting ounces. One of the most recent reviews on the Gossamer Gear page for this tent states:
"After my first three-week camping trip, I had to patch the mosquito net in three different places. Not only do i have to learn how to make these sliding knots and re-knot them on every trip, but I doubt the whole string-system that holds the whole tent together will last."
That's my main concern with this tent. Will it last?
How might this compare to Lanshan Pro 2?
Video comes out the same day I got mine haha
I thought you were going to review that Mountain Hardwear tent. The Strato UL2?
What was that little white thing hanging in the tent? An air pump? If so, is it multiple use like has a light or can charge stuff?
Great Review Dan anyone ever tell you that you favor John Krasinski ?
Yep 😂
@@DanBecker right on brother
Tarptent Rainbow Li ............will be the real Hype
one person free standing option.........unbeatable
Best 2 person tent?
Been eyeing this tent!
Watched all of it
Exactly the same as the Lanshan II Pro except the lanshan is only $130
Would love a trking pole tent but I'm 6ft7
So, how would you compare "The Two" to your Big Agnes Scout 2 Platinum?
I lust for titanium Shepard hooks my friend. 👍😎🇨🇦
Please review the REI Arete ALS 2. Pleaseeeeee
Dan, How did you add the attachment for the guy-line?
If you’re talking about at the end of the tent to pull out so I have more room on the inside, I just tied it on the already provided loop onto the tent :-) super easy!
@@DanBecker Thanks, I didn't realize there was a loop on the tent or whether you had to add a tie-out.
For a backcountry elk hunt for a guy who is 6’-3” and weighs in at 270 what tent would you recommend?
I just can’t find / decide on a light 2p tent that is double wall. I have been looking for so long …
Looks a lot like my TarpTent Notch.
DAN!! I'm in the market for an air mattress pump for backpacking. Can you provide me a little information on the one you use? With the included light?
Whats your diet like Dan?
