    Hi Mel. Nice presentation style...1st time Ive watched your channel. Could have done this before and after instead of keeping us all in suspenders mate ! lol Im working on a project van that strips bare for commercial use then quickly refits out as a "motorcaravan. " As well as being less detectable, staying registered as a van means any business owner can gain all the tax advantages of running a business vehicle. Your business can buy you a motorhome ! You dont need to be big business either...there are thousands of one man companies such as truck drivers. Of course many people like the "status" of owning a motorhome proper and there may be some uplift in value once registered as such. But that registration could come right at the point you want to sell by simply fixing the removable items permanently. Just some things to consider when starting out a self build. Happy travels everyone. John

    ls there any economic advantage either way?
    What l mean is would you get cheaper insurance or road tax as a camper, or as a van, for instance?

    • @Magnet420
      @Magnet420 5 лет назад +2

      wayyy cheaper insurance and better cover as it covers contents also. For an average van I would pay £350 roughly, but as a camper it's £150.

    • @antman5474
      @antman5474 5 лет назад +1

      Road tax generally stays the same but depending on the vehicle weight the annual MOT can become cheaper and less complicated following a registered conversion from panel van to camper van. The insurance is usually cheaper and so are the charges applied by ferry companies. I took a 3.5t luton over to France from the UK a few years ago and it cost my company about £400 for the return ticket. Similar sized motor homes are considerably cheaper.

    • @Mister_G
      @Mister_G 5 лет назад +1

      Also, the speed limits are higher for a "Motor Caravan" than they are for a van (same speed limit as cars provided the "Motor Caravan" doesn't weigh more than 3050kg (from memory) unladen).

    • @antman5474
      @antman5474 5 лет назад

      @@Mister_G yesss, you've also looked into it, but it's a minefield of grey areas. I just wish there was a definitive guide. My unconverted van has a gross weight of 2.3 tonnes. Where do I stand?

    • @Mister_G
      @Mister_G 5 лет назад

      "My unconverted van has a gross weight of 2.3 tonnes. Where do I stand?" - AFAIK: if it's less than 3.05 tonnes (empty) after conversion, and under 7.5 tonnes max laden weight than you get the same speed limit as cars if registered as a motor caravan (60 mph on single carriageways / 70 mph on dual carriageways vs 50 mph & 60 mph as a van). Have a look here: www.gov.uk/speed-limits

    Logically a Goods Carrying Commercial Vehicle, should be Legally Allowed to Carry Any Goods, as long as none of those Goods are Hazardous (i.e. A Gas Bottle) unless of course your Vehicle is LPG AutoGas powered, in which case the addition of an extra Gas Cylinder shouldn't be an issue. Personally I would prefer My Stealth Camper be Registered as a Commercial Vehicle than as a Motorcaravan, just for the safe of Police Intervention.

    @sgw8903 5 лет назад +2

    I think you might be taking our incompetent, bureaucratic state too seriously and crediting them with far too much sense Mel.
    I have registered a few myself and know of many others and have never had a refusal even when some "guidelines" have not been followed. I have registered 2 without fixed cookers or tables at all. One had a plastic tray rubber suckered to the window and another a chopping board over the sink. Any flat surface can be described, and used as a table. However uncomfortable in practice. I don't consider my eating habits any of their business. Would they say my home is not a home if I eat with a plate on my lap? Bed size is also irrelevant, (I might be particularly tiny for eg)
    I realise most people are just wanting to be sure the process goes through without any problems, but it should be remembered that the guidance of the DVLA is just that...guidance. It is not legislation nor legal requirement.
    Currently the applicable legislation can be found in :-
    EU Directive 2007/46/EC - a framework for the approval of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
    -----
    5. Special purpose vehicles
    5.1.
    Name Motor caravan
    Code SA
    Definition
    A vehicle of category M with living accommodation space which contains the following equipment as a minimum:
    (a) seats and table;
    (b) sleeping accommodation which may be converted from the seats;
    (c) cooking facilities;
    (d) storage facilities.
    This equipment shall be rigidly fixed to the living compartment.
    However, the table may be designed to be easily removable.
    -----
    This may or may not all change shortly of course when we brits "regain control over our laws" and revert back to the impenetrable, illogical, and often unworkable tangle of overbearing officialdom that we seem so good at.
    The DVLA guidelines are meaningless nonsense with minimal connection to reality. They must know it too and I can't see them wanting to be tested on it in any court. Personally when I see the law is being an ass, I tend to kick it.
    This Land Is Our Land.
