This song is a masterpiece. It's about awakened people who take their destiny in their own hands and those who just sleep in their dreams and not realizing that they are surrounded by complete darkness.
so this was behind the lyrics cus i have been looking for it desperdly
The gospel of Christ, the two words he spoke, In all simplicity.
"REPENT AND BELIEVE ",
REPENT means to change your mind, and BELIEVE, or make a decision.
As Tsoi says,
If you are saved. . .. ?
Then Be saved.
is about war
"The song reads like a Soviet-era Plato’s Cave - a nocturnal landscape filled with people intent on sleeping, and a chosen few who insist on leaving this world of shadows behind. This distinction between those who value comfort and security, and those who “set out” on a solitary path, who fight for some ideal, is a common one in Viktor Tsoi’s lyrics - as is the theme of those who have long been silent suddenly, at long last, ceasing to be silent. One is tempted to hear a note of sarcasm or disdain in the chorus, as Tsoi wishes the sleepers a good night (literally, a “calm” or “peaceful” night), and peaceful dreams. But one could also hear genuine pity, if not a kind of envy - after all, their ignorance does seem blissful. But Tsoi chooses another path, like that of those very few (Plato’s philosophers) who escape the cave into daylight."
@@coyoteocular5994 man, you just opened another layer of this song to me 35 years later. Seeing how you put it in quotes it is probably a copy-paste from somewhere else. But still thank you!

Many fans of Viktor Tsoi's work claim that the composition "Good Night" is one of the best rock songs of the entire Russian stage. It is distinguished by melodic sound, piercing text and the author's unique performance. Viktor Tsoi himself urged his fans not to look for the hidden meaning of the composition, but to try to simply feel it. However, we will try to highlight the main idea of the song and explain what the talented performer is singing about.
In the first verse, Viktor Tsoi tells us that our life is fleeting. Days follow each other. "The Heavenly Shepherd feeds the clouds." There is a deep meaning in this phrase. In a hurry, in everyday hustle and bustle, a person does not notice how the weather is changing, how diverse the nature of the area is. In pursuit of material benefits, the desire to catch everything and at once a person dooms himself to a meaningless uninteresting existence. He forgets to just live, enjoy the pleasant little things and amazing moments. He is constantly in a hurry somewhere, without thinking, without analyzing, without evaluating.
The chorus puts everything in its place. The performer loves the night. After all, it is this time of day that you can devote to yourself. The lyrical hero is in no hurry. He has time to think about his goals and desires, to weigh upcoming decisions. Man is left to himself. Nobody distracts him from thoughts and memories. At night, he is left alone with his emotions, experiences, plans. However, the performer understands that if for some people this time of day is intended for thought, for others it is just an opportunity to sleep and relax. Each of us has the right to choose. "To those who go to bed." The performer does not blame or condemn anyone for his choice. On the contrary, he wants a "restful sleep." But some listeners feel a grain of irony in this phrase. Viktor Tsoi, as if with a mockery, tells people to continue sleeping. After all, they do not attach much importance to dreams and plans. They have long been living "Groundhog Day", not noticing the miracles and magic that is happening around them.
In the second verse, the performer emphasizes that it is night for him that is the most desirable time of day. The day is filled with routine things, everyday life, various and not always pleasant meetings. At night you are on your own. You don’t need to think about what other people will say about you, you don’t need to communicate with people, prove your position and defend your point of view. Along with the night, magic descends on Earth. The starry sky is mesmerizing. You can not think about anything, but just observe and feel the incredible breath of nature. Emotions come to life at night, and many have an amazing capacity for work. "Those who have nothing to wait for." For Viktor Tsoi, these are people who have found inner freedom. They do not depend on external circumstances, barriers and frameworks. They are the creators of their own destiny. In their desire to reach incredible heights in this life, they have no equal. The performer claims that such people cannot be caught up. These are strong, self-sufficient people who are not afraid of loneliness.
The point of the last verse is to tell people that every person has the opportunity to change their lives for the better. "They hear the clatter of hooves." Some are on the verge of change, but cannot make up their minds. They doubt, overstep, and sometimes come back. They are afraid of uncertainty, but the joyless existence does not suit them either. "They are disturbed by their sleep." People cannot sleep well because of their inner dissatisfaction. Viktor Tsoi calls for freeing from the shackles in which a person has fettered himself. It is important to look at your life differently. Pick the moments that don't suit you and change them. Nobody will do it for you. After all, only you know how it will be better for you. There is no need to be afraid of anything, the road will be mastered by the walker. The main thing is to jump into a new life. You will definitely grow wings along the way.
This was an excellent breakdown of the song's meaning that provided me with a lot of information. Thanks very much!

This is one translation of the lyrics:
The roofs of the houses trembling under the heaviness of days
Heavenly shepherd pasturing the clouds
City shoots at night by shot of lights
But the night is stronger, her power is the great
For those who laying down to sleep have a peaceful dream
Peaceful night
For those who laying down to sleep have a peaceful dream
Peaceful night
I was waiting for this time and here this time has come
Those who were silent broke the silence
Those who have nothing to wait for sit down in the saddle
Won't catch up them, by now won't catch up
For those who laying down to sleep have a peaceful dream
Peaceful night
For those who laying down to sleep have a peaceful dream
Peaceful night
Neighbors come, they heard the knock of the hooves
Prevents to fall asleep, disturbs their dream
Those who have nothing to wait for depart in the way
Those who are saved, those who are saved
For those who laying down to sleep have a peaceful dream
Peaceful night
For those who laying down to sleep have a peaceful dream
Peaceful night
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
«Sound engineer Alexey Vishnya said that the first version of "Peaceful (calm) night" was recorded along with the songs that were later released on the "Unknown Songs" CD. In the refrain of the song there are the words: "For those who lay down to sleep have a peaceful dream", and according to Alexey Vishnya, at the moment of recording an elderly invalid died in the apartment below, and his relatives came to the musicians and asked to observe silence for nine days (orthodox tradition). This case is described in the first line of the third verse (Neighbors come, they heard the knock of the hooves Prevents to fall asleep, disturbs their dreams...).»
In my opinion, this song is about death and the peacefulness of the soul after life.
In general, the songs of the band Kino are famous for having a lot of meanings in them, and it's always interesting to analyze their lyrics.
I've always understood this song as a political one given that it was written towards the end of the soviet union. The second and third verses especially suggest that some people have found the new way and the rest are just disturbed by it and dont want the change in my opinion. But hey, that is the beuty of art: you can understand what you want to and nobody is ever right as to what a piece of art means, even the artist himself
@@mustardjar3216 it wasn't exactly political. But it was certainly heavily influenced by the times when it was written. Late 80's was time of great political changes but also of great personal awakening of the people. And Tsoy being the people's poet reflected on that perfectly.
Hey this is a late reply but my Dad was in the russian special forces and loved Tsoi but as I don't speak russian fluently, your comment helped me a lot

KINO - legend of Soviet Union music! ❤️🎶
The first Kino track I was exposed to was Blood Group, and I think this has to my my second or third favourite track from them, it's just so understated and layered.
And Viktor Tsoi's lyrics are so poetic when you read the translations. He was a real artist.
When I was little, 5-6 years old kid, I often turned off the light and went to bed with this song playing from a tape recorder, lol. You can imagine what kind of person I am now.
I only recently realized that I was in fact unknowingly copying the structure of the melodies of the Kino when I tried to create my own music in FL Studio like 10 years ago.
KINO is one love.

Russian american sending huge regards from NYC. Thank you for reacting to this brother. This is my childhood man! KINO's music and lyrical content captured my entire 80's generation. It's crazy to see my fellow english speakers react to this song. Thank you!
In fact, this is a social song about active and passive people. The song is full of allegories. Passive people go with the flow and do not take part in the urgent need for change. They accept the routine that at night everyone usually sleeps and goes to bed. They are wished a restful sleep. The city is the country. The flashes of fireworks in the night sky are bright people striving to illuminate the night, but the night (the existing order) is stronger, the power of the night is great. Those who do not agree sit in the saddle of their horse, and the rest (passive people) are wished a peaceful sleep.
Нет
"have a calm night" means "have a good night" in russian as well as "have a calm sleep" is "have a good dreams" but text of the song isn't "have a calm sleep, have a calm night..." but "have a calm sleep, calm night..." (case and stress changed, but it can't be translated correctly due to local specific play with emphasis) which is changing meaning from "have a good night" to "night is calm". So actual, translation not of the text, but of the meaning of the song would be:
Rooftops are trembling under the pressure of days
Heavenly shepherd herding the clouds,
City shoots into the night with buckshot of lights
But night is stronger, her might is powerful
To those who are going to sleep - have a peaceful rest, the night is calm
To those who are going to sleep - have a peaceful rest, the night is calm
I've been waiting for this time, and now this time has come
Those who were silent aren't silent anymore
Those who have nothing to wait saddling up
They wouldn't be caught, already wouldn't be caught
And to those who are going to sleep - have a peaceful rest, the night is calm
To those who are going to sleep - have a peaceful rest, the night is calm
Neighbors come, they hearing clicking hooves
They can't fall asleep, it disturbs their dreams
Those who have nothing to wait are hitting the road
Those ones who saved, those ones who saved...
And to those who are going to sleep - have a peaceful rest, the night is calm
To those who are going to sleep - have a peaceful rest, the night is calm
This is most close i could get, for english speakers to have real insight what this song is about. I doubt it can be done anyhow better.

Another masterpiece of the end of the soviet era is Alliance - At Dawn Must see and hear.
Your overall evaluation of the song is pretty much correct! It does have a deeper meaning than the lyrics say. It does refer to life and death, but more so figuratively, which is what makes this song altogether more mysteriously melancholic. The words and the music go hand in hand with the meaning of the song. When a song is translated into any other language, it kind of loses its actual meaning. But the part where he says "Those who got to bed, good night, good dreams" also refers to "resting in peace". This song is very spiritual and actually isn't about religion at all. The "heavenly shepherd" was more used to convey the meaning of the song and better understand where it's going. "Those who've got nothing to wait for, mount their horses. You won't catch up with them, no, not now." He's basically saying that those who have nothing to wait for, move on, meaning their souls. The ones who stay will not be able to catch up with them because their souls have not yet accomplished what they needed to in order to move on to higher places. So "not now" means they still have obstacles in their way before they can ascend with the rest. There's many ways this song can be interpreted. But there's only one right way to understand it, and that is only known by Viktor himself.

This song is not about your individual world but about a bunch of "troubled" people going into the "war", while the rest of you are having a calm and peaceful "night", you dont want to be disturbed from.
Another absolutely phenomenal song from 80s is Alliance - At Dawn It's more synthpop than rock, but it's kinda an exception, this band was focused on rock music. And the lyrics were way ahead of its time - this song gained a second life in 2019-2020. If you didn't listen to it already, I'd suggest you to react to it, you will be really impressed (eg. vocals in this track are absolutely fantastic)

Good song, I like this.
Viktor Tsoi is the singer, the lyricist, and the composer of the music. His amazing band though made it catchy an palatable. What I like about Tsoi is that his music is very atmospheric. The first thing it hits is the heart. Then his lyrics are very simple, philosophical, and vague. They can be interpreted in many different ways all at once. This song, because of the time he was living in, can be said about the Soviet party. This song was written right before the party's collapse (not that these artists wanted an abrupt end that led to chaos). But this can be applied to any government. It can also be downscaled to interpersonal connections. Tsoi, an avid philosopher, made sure his lyrics were open for everybody. Your interpretation is just as good as mine.
Nice reaction! Would love to see more Kino.
This "Calm night" here means "Good night, who stays", that means close to mood as "So, f-ck you, stay here, we belong to different worlds".

I actually like more the version of this song from the album Gruppa Krovi.
It's kind of like Floyd? In the instruments at least, and the closest thing I could compare the vocals to is... Johnny Cash? Is that crazy? Maybe so but that's what I'm hearing. I don't know why I like it but I do very much. Please do check out more! Great Reaction, it's fascinating.
Thanks, I'd definitely be interested in revisiting this band.

For historical/cultural context:
This band sounds like an 80s band because it is one. The song here was released on the album Группа крови (Gruppa krovi/Blood Type) in 1988. So we are also firmly in the soviet context with Gorbatchov's loosening culturally at this point. The reality for many young men at that time was that they might be sent to fight the Soviet war in Afghanistan or to clean up Chernobyl. I think you can see quite a lot of that in KINO's music.
The band's lead (songwriter, vocals, guitar) Viktor Tsoi was a cultural icon to many young people back then. His tragic death in a car crash in 1990 touched many people. The slogan "Tsoi lives" became a somewhat popular graffiti motive in post-soviet Russia.
One of KINO's important songs is "Хочу перемен" (Khochu peremen/I want change), sometimes called "Мы ждём перемен" (so "We are waiting for change"). For obvious reasons this song has become popular with protest movements. The latest example would be the ongoing struggle against the Belarus dictator Lukashenko. There two sound engineers were imprisoned for playing that song at a pro-Lukashenko concert.
I have never considered and do not consider the song "I want change" (Hochu peremen/I want change) as a protest. This song is above all that. This song is about internal changes, about changes in personality, etc.

In the first verse, Viktor Tsoi talks about the fact that our life is fleeting. Days follow each other. "The heavenly shepherd herds the clouds." This phrase has a deep meaning.
