  • Backing Track Notes:
    1) You can use BOTH the A minor pentatonic scales and A major pentatonic scales to solo over this track. Combining these two scales will give you more of a "bluesy/country" sound on guitar.
    2) IMPORTANT - Position 1 Major Pentatonic Scale is the same "scale shape" as Position 2 Minor Pentatonic Scale. This same trick applies to all positions. So basically YOU ONLY NEED TO LEARN 5 SCALE SHAPES and you will know both the Major and Minor pentatonic scales...the difference is the starting point -- for example, play a minor pentatonic scale shape, and then MOVE THAT SAME SHAPE DOWN 3 FRETS and you will be playing the major pentatonic scale. It's kind of confusing but very simple at the same time.
    3) The black dots in the charts are the root notes. The root note when you are in the key of A is the note A, so each black dot in these charts represents the note A at various places on the guitar neck.
    4) IMPORTANT - Remember that the 12th fret is the same as the notes of the open strings (just one octave higher). This is very noticeable with Position 4 of the A Minor Pentatonic Scale because you can play this Position 4 Scale shape near the nut using the open strings. Playing scales near the nut using open strings is used often for playing bass line walks, fill riffs, lead guitar, etc.
    5) After you memorize the minor pentatonic scales, try playing the Blues Scale. The six note (hexatonic) Blues Scale is the exact same scale as the Minor Pentatonic Scale except there’s one extra note added per octave: the sharp 4th or flat 5th degree.
