Dude that was definitely in detail I love how thorough and matter of fact you are, I totally have learned more answers to questions I never knew I had watching your channel lol its crazy you did this video cuz I was going to buy a monstera from my local Walmart the other day but didn't for lack of knowledge.
Monstera are popular for a reason...they are amazing! I find there are a lot of questions out there on propagation and buying different cuts, so I thought I'd make videos explaining these things
Most people don't notice it because you don't typically chop up your plants. Lol but when you take a mid-cutting or when you buy mid cutting, the growing eye is important to the new growth of the plant
Oh gosh! I would not have known about the growth eye! 😱 I am not in the market for one but I now I have been educated. Thank you so much for the info.❤
Ya... I'm not too sure if you cut too close to the node and through the growing eye it would get a new stem or not. That's why it's very important to make sure there is a viable growing eye on the stem
The explanation of how to determine the cutting and the growth point was excellent. I know understand what to look for before I cut a plant to propagate it and also the variegation works. Great information.
I'm glad you think the explaining was good because I always feel like I'm just rambling on. After the fact I always wonder if it makes sense to people lol I am not a teacher. I'm actually in healthcare
Thanks for this Hugely informative video. It addressed my concerns about my Thai Constellation top cutting: I’d feared it wouldn’t put out new leaves / stem and I’d only have its current three leaves - which are beautiful, but I’d hoped for new leaves + stems.
I hv a decent size monstera which iam planning to chop n prop, does the plant which will be left in the pot must hv the growing eye or it will shoot new branches as usual?*going to chop the plant quite a bit leaving 1 or 2 leaf..
Thanks for sharing this, may I ask any helpful tips that can avoid new leaf down size on the top cutting and for bottom node cutting new leaf/ stem can grow and upsize faster?
May be a silly question…when you plant the water cutting that you showed, how do you deal with the roots at different levels? The growing eye seems to be between the root on the top node and the roots at the bottom. Will you clip off the upper root or will the growing eye be beneath the soil?
The growing eye doesn't matter with this cutting because it is a top cutting. The new growth will continue to grow out of the petiole....continuing to grow normally. The growing eye is activated when you no longer have the top. In this case this would be the mid cut. It will turn send out the new growth from the growing eye. Hope this makes sense
It's more of a concern with the original plant. My monstera was extremely leggy due poor lighting and after pruning the floppy top, the main plant activated all the top growth points and forked into two big stems.
@@EverythingPlants yup! it had one big leaf and the new growth point is about 3 inches now. it's growing great lol I think I'm getting a hang of my lighting situation
Jeff, what would you have done differently with the monstera water propagation? Keep in water longer till acclimated? Enjoy your videos and that you actually research before making blind statements! Thank you.
What do you mean differently? It is progressing as it should and is ready to be potted up in soil. Since it is a top cutting, the new growth will continue from the leaf petiole and grow upright.
Depends.....I had an albo get new growth within a couple weeks but the aurea I've had for a couple months and nothing. It's probably focusing energy on root growth to sustain new stem growth
Jeff, I don't think you are to blame, certainly not solely to blame, for the new fenestrated but small leaf. The large leaf it came with was probably produced by the established roots of the mother plant, whereas your new leaf was produced by the much smaller new roots. I'm guessing the next leaf will, therefore, be larger than the first leaf, as the roots will be bigger, but it may well not be as big as the original leaf. Having said that, I do think each leaf will have the potential to be larger than its immediate predecessor and by the third or fourth leaf they will be as big as the original. I may, of course, be wrong in some of my assumptions! Please do post updates as the plant develops.
After reading this, I would completely agree with you about the root development. I am curious to see how the next leaf turns out. Thanks again for a wonderful analysis, Rob.
Never a dumb question..... The mid cut will produce a new stem from the growing eye and produce a new plant so to speak. Whereas if you have a top cut it just continues growth in the normal fashion and typically remains of similar size and maturity. Does that make sense? As the plant continues to grow, it will increase in size and maturity
Jeff, is your baby Thai constellation a midcut? The Thai constellation I just bought looks like yours. It’s strongly rooted but it doesn’t have the top/bottom cuts like a midcut. I’m worried it won’t grow any new leaves!
Great videos - just found you. What is your preferred soil mixture for your monsteras? I have been using coco perlite mix and feeding with the Professor Monstera method - but considering moving to something that will allow a little more nutrient retention to allow more time between feedings and I can just water (as opposed to having to feed for most waterings, which is time consuming with the PMM) If you're not familiar with his method - it's worth searching up. I have astronomical growth on all my Monsteras - new leaves every 4-6 weeks or so on the big ones, and every few weeks on my juveniles!
@@EverythingPlants the first one at 27 seconds? I made one in the last couple days that is really awesome. I just transplanted a Dragon's Tail on it today. I bought a top cutting last month and realized it don’t have the growing eye after watching this video😅 so I’m just stuck with a a half moon top cutting then that won’t grow any leaves? 🥲
