- FLCL is one of my top favorites of all time so when I heard it was getting a sequel, I was hyped!!! But sadly, these two new seasons of Fooly Cooly fell short for many reasons. I want to break down what happened with the creation of Progressive and Alternative and talk about why they fail as successors to the master that was the first original season. I did not watch Progressive or Alternative. I knew they would never live up to the original. Honestly Fooly Cooly did not need any sequals. It is fine as a stand alone story. They say they wanted to give young animators a chance to shine, but it feels more like a cash grab.

I recently just washed every single version of FLCL and alternative was surprising I was expecting it to be garbage but it was actually really good
The original is lightning in a bottle. It's amazing it happened once. You can't expect it to happen again.

It's kind of hilarious when you think about it. Us FLCL fans were the weirdos, the people who kept watching those six original episodes until they made sense. The last thing we wanted was copies. I think the best homage you can make to FLCL is to make something that is a fresh take on growing up, with fresh music from bands that would resonate with a young audience the way The Pillows resonated with me. I don't want nostalgia, I don't need to stay 15 forever. The point of FLCL was that we should embrace life for what it is, when it is.
FLCL was the ultimate in expressing an idea creatively and not giving a damn what people thought. Anything you make like that, with talented people behind it, is going to be something worthy of the name Fooly Cooly.
One thing that I didn't really care for in Progressive & Alternative was the overimportance and overemphasis that they placed on Medical Mechanica and Atomsk. In the original I always got the vibe that knowing all the ins and outs of those two entities was besides the point, like they were just a metaphor for the concept of order vs. chaos or youth vs. age.
I was so dissapointed when Progressive came out, I never even watched Alternative
I would say Alternative is definitely worth your time if you like Slice of life anime. It's not as good as the original but not bad at all
I'm afraid that there have been many people that missed out on Alternative because of Progressive, don't be afraid to give Alt a try, it's definitely enjoyable on its own
I'm sad that Naota isn't in ether of the other seasons as a protagonist.
I’m actually glad he isn’t. naota’s story is already finished if they bring him back they would just ruin his character

What reason would they need to bring back Noata? that would just be a needles callback. That's what brought down progressive.

same here they missed out, adults have struggles too would love to see how his life went after all the crazy stuff that happened to him more could have been explored just required passion and creativity want to get a finally with him fighting Atomsk
I do feel like there was some thought behind trying to make two sequel series to FLCL this long after the original. But unfortunately it just ended up being boring. Really didn't help that Naota wasn't part of either story. Would have been so cool to check in with the original protagonist 20 years later
Fully prepared to never watch the sequels after your review of S2. But then you talk about S3 and now im curious. Thanx for the honest review. FLCL forever!!!

@JohnnyStar Progressive has one aspect of Harukos personality that I feel gets overlooked in alternative, and grunge, well let's just ignore grunge. Haruko really felt like she was forced into a super hero position here. But haruko is not a super hero. Sure she's great fun. Until the second, the very instant, you, no matter who you are, end up between her and what she wants, or even just cant deliver what she wants. Then the fangs come out. And not just in the obvious literal sense either. How many days did she leave naotas dad in the closet (Dead? Dehydrated/preserved?) collecting roaches? That doesn't seem like the same haruko in alternative, who at her worst just uses a confused kid to try and make kana jealous enough to pop, or makes all the girls strip for some reason? (Seriously what was the point of that scene?)
I don't think progressive executed it very well, like the rest of the show it was very heavy handed and on the nose. But it was there.
What did Haruko want in alternative though? We of course assume it's what she always wants, atomsk, but he wasn't really there. Kana tapped into his power somehow at the end for the massive N.O. display, but that was about it. She just wanted to help earth girls? Just doesn't seem like haruko. She's just not that altruistic, or maybe better put, not in that way. It's like they recognized/remembered haruko only interacts with someone to get something for herself, made that the premise for her existance in the story, but forgot what that something was and just had her fight robots and do fashion walks instead.
Thanks for the informative review. I just finished FLCL (it now being probably my favourite anime of all time; I'm officially a mega-fan) and was looking for some insight on the subsequent seasons. Weirdly, there's an absence of quality reviews for them. Your criticisms - especially of Progressive - totally resonate with me and my feelings on the original FLCL. The lore was not its strength. Instead, it was the high-velocity storytelling; the stellar voice acting, the expressive animation, the astounding camerawork etc. Progressive fleshes out the worst parts of FLCL. It misses the point entirely.
I love FLCL but the plot is pretty much nonexistent, it’s basically just a means to an end for the themes
I watched about 25% of the first flcl episode and turned away because I didnt see it going nowhere. Idk, this vid makes me wanna go back and actaully give it a chance

DO listen to the songs the pillows make. They were the best part of the 2 seasons.
I never grew up with the original FLCL cuz I was still a baby at the time it first came out in the early 2000s. I only managed to catch the rerun when FLCL 2&3 came out when I was in High school. So to me I experienced FLCL like I was watching the original Star Wars Trilogy for the first time. Not counting the original FLCL, FLCL Alternate is my favorite out of the 2, mostly because I could relate to Kana and her best friend leaving her. It reminded me of my relationship with my sister, last time I saw her was at my graduation. I would give up anything just to have those glory days back, I miss her.
Truly amazing video. Makes me love FLCL even more, while giving me the warning I need about the other two.

Broke my heart when naota wasn’t in both alternative and progressive
I watched FLCL recently, 6 episodes and I wanted to see more of Naota and his friends, maybe hints of Haruko, Mamimi in her own spinoff etc etc. The main thing being: I wanted to see the characters having grown from the first 1 off season. I found it relatively easy to catch the hints of what the show meant and wanted to see a continuation in the characters' growths.
Progressive, Alternative, Grunge AND Shoegaze were none of that. Idk some people like Alternative and whatnot, but I couldn't stomach the 1st episode of any of them. Such a disappointment. It felt like they dropped the ball on the sequels and still haven't realized how to pick it back up.
Not sure if there was enough story left to it, but I wanted to see a continuation of Naota and actually going to see his brother. There is no plot in there, but i'm not paid money to do that - so, maybe someone who is could.

I loved flcl I had no idea what was going on it, left me stressed trying to figure it all out, other than the obvious growing up themes. but then I watched the second one, and I finished it but it just made me more confused but not like the first one made me, the second one felt lack luster, I felt no build up to a nice relief, the second one just built me up to drop me off a cliff. I gave up in the third one, which it made me actually consider it after watching this, Alternative of course the first one just felt right in so many ways, even if I didn't understand it at first, im hoping the third one doesn't continue to ruin it for me.
Alternative was better than Progressive for sure, but I didn't really like both of them for what they are or what they're trying to emulate under the name FLCL
So why is the show called Fooly Cooly?

I love this show, just beyond words almost. It's beautiful and sad, funny and bloody bizarre. I love those characters and I don't think It would be smart for me to watch my beloved and I mean beloved characters be twisted into something soulless and filled with the MESSAGE! F them.
I think any time you inject an old character/idea into a new show/world, you have to take into consideration as to how they/ it should have evolved from the previous iteration.
In my opinion, once the story is finished, you dont really need the old lore as a foundation for the new stuff. Some of the aesthetic maybe, but even that could prevent the new story from flourishing.
I think the original director had the right game plan, and that approach is what generally works for most creative endeavors: be creative and dont take it too seriously. That's why the first FLCL worked to begin with. There were basically no real restraints on creativity. The core theme is young people figuring out the next step in life. Everything else is up to the artists with some guidance. The teachable moments should be woven in, but the creativity should come first. Makes me wonder what Haruko would have been like had she evolved into a different yet equally important role.
Progressive isn't that bad, but alternative diesnt really feel like fooly cool, but I'd still wouldn't say not watch them, their still okay anime storys
Wish they were better, glad they exist. Honestly biggest dub was it made Pillows easier to listen to outside of Japan

As someone who never connected with the original I really enjoyed both of these entries. More Alternative than Progressive but I would be lying if I said I didn't think about re-watching them all the time. I guess I didn't noticed all the similarities to the first since I never compared them. I also don't look at it as fondly as most so never felt disappointed with them. Really great vid! It help me better understand the strong negative reaction to them.
I was very disappointment of purchasing FLCL Progressive and Alternative seasons on RUclips. I’ll give credit of the show having the main character Harnko Haruhara voiced by the same actresses Kari Wahlgren for English and Mayumi Shintani for Japanese, but her personality was more annoying than funny of how the first FLCL was. It also seemed that her true character was just fading more and more after watching each show where she seemed like someone else. All I can say is that it was nice to hear The Pillows music with new songs and the songs from the first FLCL. The comments are also turned off when you watch FLCL seasons 2 and 3 on RUclips since they knew they were going to be trolled by FLCL fans lol.
And then the new new "seasons" came out and were actually pretty alright, I still didn't like the 3d of one of them but they were short and sweet and I genuinely enjoyed them

Progressive had left such a bitter taste in my mouth despite having a feeling it would never live up to the original FLCL that I didn't even watch Alternative.
I've never been a huge fan of remaking/continuing most media (TV/Movies and sometimes games unless they're REALLY old) as companies seem to forget the reasons why these media were good to begin with.
Just hearing that interview really hurt my balls bro.. honestly this could have worked if they worked towards expanding the world away from FLCL . Honestly after hearing I think alternative does just that and that's why it works.
Very true, Kazuya just wanted it to be a true expression of art not something just to make cause we liked the original. The heads of the projects just didn't understand that
I love the fact that both these seasons were written by FLCL fans and not the original studio , but grunge and the 5th season are written by same studio, just don't know if it's original studio or not
I watched progressive and it was awesome. Since I never watched the original, I never knew jinyu and haruko were split from what was once the same personality.

Personally, I didn't mind the 2 newer seasons, they had their moments here and there. They will never live up to the original FLCL, but I liked it, along with it's faults (it was also the first time I got a clearer understanding on what FLCL was and what they were trying to do to some degree). I took it as the first season as the preadolesance to early puberty, Progressive for the middle of childhood if you can call it that, and Alternative being almost a reality check that childhood is almost over. But I will say, whether I would have liked it or not, I at least got to find out about the Pillows and the original series too.

Okay so I went to look for the music from the show today and saw there was a second season and my first thought was Wait I didn't know there was more to the manga? Google disappointment only grew

I never even watched the original. I watched progressive, and it’s basically a love story between Ide and Hidomi, in addition to jinyu battling haruko. However, I enjoyed progressive, though I watched it with the english dub.

What an amazing narration about those seasons. Watched the first 2 episodes of season 2…. Hated it. I’d rather rewatch the original or read the manga (which is a masterpiece in itself) the adaptation from the original manga to the anime was unbelievable. But in my opinion, 1 season was perfect and more than enough. I’ve probably watched 8 or more times every couple years and I’m still finding things I didn’t notice or am just mesmerized by the story and animation. After watching this episode I’ll watch the third season for sure based on what he said

yo man!! huge fan of the video and the great insight on the two seasons. i agree with you and that when i finished these seasons a few years back i couldn’t shrug off the feeling that they felt very lackluster and non flcl to me. shoegaze is definitely looking promising from what ive seen, I just hope that a new take on flcl is officially realized rather than trying to capture the essence of the original. if you don’t mind too, could you tell me where you grabbed the footage from at 0:42? i don’t ever recall seeing it anywhere and its got me super curious, thanks!
I actually liked progressive it was cool for lore but alternative was cringey and the main character was useless annoying and i didn't really see any character progression I really didnt like it

Bruh the hate everyone has Progressive always seeps over to alternative. Most people just didn't even watch Alternative. I just wish people gave it a chance after the terrible story progressive had.
Hopefully Grudge does it's own thing like Alternative.
If you're a high school girl then I guess Alternate would seem good. But, it was just boring and lame, imo. It had pretty great animation, though, but again that was wasted on the bland story. The OG, in comparison, had mindblowing animation every minute for no reaosn other than because they felt like it.

I think the one thing we all can agree on, is how new anime fans like me was able to find the original flcl because of the sequels. If flcl progressive or alternative wouldn’t have existed, I wouldn’t have ever watched it to begin with. The one thing I can only hope for about flcl grunge and shoegun is they can still live up to what the original flcl was supposed to be.

I watched both. While not as good as the OG season, I did still find them enjoyable.
I definitely steadfast with the original, I just can't help something is just missing from alternative and progressive. I don't really know but its good enough I guess.

The original soundtrack had heart and fitting moments. The new seasons only gave us new ending themes; remade songs didn’t sound as great as the original versions. Also got TIRED of the overuse of songs from season one. INTRODUCE OTHER ALBUMS WITHOUT COMPLETELY REHASHING THE ORIGINAL!!!!

Isn't that what a sequel is supposed to do? Do it's own thing while having some connections to the original series? Alternative is about the opposite of what Naoto was, meanwhile Progressive tried too hard to ride the coat tails of the OG while Alternative seems like an earnest attempt to do it's own thing while being inspired by the OG and adding in new cool stuff... Keep in mind I never seen the sequels because they look like ass, but I think you convinced me to watch Alternative because omg it looks like it actually tried.
Progressive was way better then alternative, alternative felt nothing like FLCL were progressive actually felt simular to FLCL

Alternative was actually good
I quite liked Progressive, I found the Lore expansion Interesting, I enjoyed Haruko’s Split personality Jinyu, I enjoyed the Mother Daughter storyline with the main character, and the Canti cameo was cool Imo, I had the exact opposite experience and dreaded Alternative, it pained me so much so get through those last 3 episodes
I really did love both S2 and S3 but that's just me.
So I absolutely loved season one which I watch for the first time the other day. So I'll season to yesterday and I mean it's definitely not bad in my book. Nowhere near as great as the original, but interesting enough to hold my attention and it has at least enough funny moments to make me laugh once in awhile.

I feel exactly the same way. I want FLCL to be great in every form but these new spin offs feel so wrong. Like the original almost has nothing to do with these properties
@@JohnnyStar Now that I've watched Progressive and Alternative I will have to see Grunge and Shoegaze. My expectations are medium, I hope they are AT LEAST better than Progressive, but I doubt they will be even half as good as the original again. At least I hope they will be enyojable and surpass a bit the first sequels.
