The best comparison I've seen is that FLCL is similar to a music video. It can be something you can analyze if you want to pick it apart, but if not, it's still something entertaining and fun you can watch.
Have yet to see the series but that sounds like a perfect description for movies/shows similar to FLCL in the sense that they’re made to entertain. Too many critics nowadays pick apart film too much imo, movies that pose a boring watch get too much praise for simply being “intellectual” or “artistic” which while they can be good to watch often times aren’t because that’s all they present.
my favorite memory frmo flcl is the time i asked my lad if he had watched flcl and he asked "is it that one of the girl who hits people over the head with electric guitars?" and all i could say is "exactly"
can someone explain to me why is this anime so great (or bad in some point, just tell me your opinion) im planning to watch and just want to know what makes this anime so great
I remember watching “Firestarter,” the second episode of FLCL, back in middle school (I wasn’t allowed to watch Adult Swim back then so I sneaked into my parents room to watch while they were gone on a trip) and I just remember being in awe at what I saw. I had watched anime before but I didn’t understand that anime could look or be written in the way FLCL was. Up until that point I thought anime could only ever be like DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, CardCaptors, and Sailor Moon. It changed my outlook on anime and it remains my favorite anime to this day.
NessTheAlien Same. I ended up watching the series twice when it first aired on Adult Swim because I missed FLClimax. So come Tuesday night and it's the first episode again, 14 year-old me was massively confused. Kids back then were use to seasoned series, like you said. It was for the best though because it is still my personal favorite to this day. I hope the new seasons will add to it greatly.
NessTheAlien Had pretty much the same experience. I marathoned the whole show because this was back when Adult Swim did that Burger King contest and the winner chose a whole lineup of great anime beginning with FLCL in its entirety leading into Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III. That was a pretty amazing night for young me.
I never knew that, but I'm not totally surprised, thinking about it. That can be A Thing when you get treatment. All the energy that your depression was sucking down suddenly exists again and your mind goes to WTF-town. It's pretty wild! (Also, y'all doubtless knew this, but Anno provided the voice of Naota's giant cat.)
You killed it, FLCL exudes the idea that you shouldn't be so serious, and should instead be more sincere. People who are hating/scrutinizing the New seasons of FLCL don't seem to be remembering / getting a big message in the original.
Your Mom I can't entirely disagree with you, but at the same time I definitely saw a very well thought out attempt to recreate the level of structured chaos that the original FLCL had. They have done a great job so far from what I've seen of the new seasons, to expect things to be just like they where in the original is in a way an unrealistic expectation, the original FLCL was an experimental anime done with the new animation tech they had at the time, all these aspects add up to create something you can't really duplicate purposefully.
the thing is that,. why even name it the same just to get credit? Its obviously not supposed to be like the old fooly cooly so I don't see a point in sayint it's fooly cooly, it can even turn out to be a heck of a good show, most of the team seems solid with new talent even, but the original fooly cooly is over and it never needed a continuation, so it's sort of betraying the flcl identity and branding, what if it turns out bad? you will recommend someone flcl but tell them "ignore the other seasons they are crap" They can and should keep experimenting all they want but using the same name just for marketing sake or whatever isnt a very good practice, right now I will just keep my expectations on medium.
Lucak Arts I feel your concerns trust me, for instance I've been a huge fan of the dark tower series, and when the movie finally came out I hated pretty much every minute of it because the books are so much better and they didn't do the story real justice, I felt like they should have just made it an entirely new movie and not called it the dark tower, but after finishing the movie and realizing I spent the entire time hating on it because the books(original content) where so much better that I didn't even give it a chance to really show me what it had and was only looking for what I knew I should be seeing. Now take the new seasons of FLCL and you have a very similar case. I honestly have grown out of the idea that we should get new seasons of great anime when they've ended already, after seeing so many new seasons just no do the series real justice. However when they do get more content I almost always watch it and take some sort of enjoyment from it, so it's important to not be so serious and allow the creators the freedom of expanding on the universe, in the end if you feel the content wasn't up to par with the original content and that makes you really upset I get you, but that doesn't mean you should let it ruin the potential of the new content they've given you, you gotta take the good with the bad and in this particular case I can really feel the passion of the people working on the new seasons of FLCL, they want to do it justice and if some things are off I hope we can still enjoy the content and not let trivial details to rule our experiences, we as the viewers have to leave the creators room to grow and such also if there is going to be a continuation of content.
I had one of those moments... When I was about.. sixteen, I think, and I was watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time, in it's initial US broadcast run in 1998. I remember watching the first episode and really liking it. The characters were fun, the action was interesting, the music was fantastic. I just really liked the show. And then episode 5, Ballad of the Fallen Angels happened... There was that moment, when Spike is walking to the church, specifically NOT to rescue Faye, but to confront Vicious and be certain he's still alive. It's about a full minute and a half of nothing but Spike walking in the open door, with the camera panning from one gorgeous shot to another, while that rendition of "In the Rain" plays in the background. There's no action, no dialogue, and nothing but the foley effects his footsteps set to the song. I distinctly remember thinking that nothing I ever see will ever be as amazing as this moment, right here.
The show is confusing, wild, and deep. But it's also about puberty. Puberty is confusing, wild, and deep. Even if the whole thing flies over your head you can still enjoy the show. And even if you don't grow into the super adult you thought you would, you can still be a cool one. Like Haruko says in the very first episode of the new season "BORN TO BE MILD!!!"
Thanks for making me feel better about myself. Seriously though I’m so pumped that this is back. I remember watching this when I was in elementary school. One of the shows that inspired me to start animating.
I had just watched FLCL and my first and last response was "wtf is actually happening". I have spent many years watching anime, DBZ being my first, and I am really drawn towards deep-natured ones (Serial Experiments Lain, Steins;Gate etc.). All that to say by the end I absolutely love FLCL and it really reminded me why I started watching anime in the first place. I found this video wanting to know more about it and am leaving not wanting to know a damn thing
i still remember when i first found FLCL late one night on adult swim over the summer in grade school. i didn't know what i was watching or what was going on but i couldn't stop watching it. a few days later at the city pool i tried to describe what i saw to some friends. i told them about this strange show with robots, a little kid, and a girl that pulled a guitar out of his head and they all looked at me like i was crazy.
This is how I feel about Genndy Tartakovsky's work. He was never really into realism. Everything was melodramatic, bigger than reality, like 3 act opera. I swear watching Dexter's Laboratory as a kid physically altered my brain.
All art exist on a mental wave or frequency of understanding. As we age what was once static becomes clear and more channels appear. It's not about turning your brain off, It's about finding and turning it to the right frequency.
My mom recently passed away. I had known this was her favorite anime for a while. I just never got around to watching it, so I finally sat down and watched it when I was done I felt sad because to me the show didn’t really have an ending. (I tried to look at the other shows but I’m pretty sure they’re all prequel’s.) so I just went online to find the first explanation video. I could to try and get some closure to the ending and luckily I found yours first Thank you for making this it’s very well-made and has helped me. Sorry if this seems rambling it’s 11:23 AM and I just got done crying.
It was relevant enough to use as clarification on how he feels about the "turn your brain off" thing, considering the narrative he's built up on how he feels about SAO.
Sometimes it really is ok to feel stupid, to be stupid. If you don’t act or be or feel stupid every now and again, you really aren’t living. Being or feeling stupid makes you have fun, even in darker times. You need to feel stupid to experience life to it’s fullest. So, yes, it is absolutely okay to feel stupid.
Man, I remember when I was 15yo downloading this series in a slowass internet and being blown away (I'm 31 now). Just to drive home what you said in your video, being in a unique position of being able to talk about this anime a little more than 15 years later I can say this: I remember VERY LITTLE of the overall plot. But the visuals? For me Evangelion (another anime I watched when I was in my early teens, which I remember MOST of the plot ironically enough) and FLCL are the benchmark for visuals (especially during action scenes) against all other anime are measure against. Also... the soundtrack is unnaturally good. Hearing Blue Drive Monster filled me with such nostalgia that its difficult to explain. Gotta watch it again now.
This was a lesson that was most profoundly hammered into me by 2012's Cabin in the Woods by Joss Whedon. In watching the film there is a point in the 3rd act at which I actually yelled out in excitement and CLAPPED in reaction to what I had just witnessed on screen (which is something I simply never do, I generally HATE when people make noise during a showing). I walked out of the theater and in discussing it I realized how little the main plot made any sense yet I was struck with a single thought: "Why did I enjoy it so much then??" The movie started to fall apart the moment I began to critically analyze it. In retrospect, what I had born witness to was a perfectly executed balancing act between willing suspension of disbelief and disillusionment. Watching the movie again does not elicit the same response yet I have never forgotten the feeling of overwhelming emotion overtaking me in that moment in the theater.
Same thing happened to the theater showing Godzilla (2014). Despite the various flaws the film has, it's the only time I've seen (and participated in) a standing ovation from an entire theater after a film's end.
Me and my boyfriend just finished rewatching it in preparation for the new seasons airing on Toonami. We had both seen it when it first aired on tv back in '03-'04, right as we were leaving middleschool for highschool. He hadn't seen it since then, I'd catch it on occassion when it'd re-air a couple of times after but even that felt so long ago. Still we were fans of the show. This time around we still enjoyed it just as much as before but we didn't see it as a random mess as before. Maybe it's because we were only 13-14yrs old when we first saw it and maybe all the randomness kind of hit closer to home for us at that time in our lives to see it from afar, but now at 29yrs it all made much more sense to us. It's still kind of random, but we see all the symbolisms clearer now, and the messages the story was conveying, that with all the wild and crazy things that are out of our control, especially as adolescences experience it, we just try to go on and live life doing the best that we can not knowing if it's right or wrong, which I dont think i got the first time i watched it back then but the story and soundtrack would stick with me from my first step into highschool until my last.
Wow, that was an amazing essay. Thank you very much -- FLCL has conquered a special place in my heart ever since I watched it all those years ago and being able to rewatch some of these scenes while you exposed such a heartwarming point really left me grinning. And now I'll just get back to listening to another 4h of The Pillows.
When I saw flcl as a child, I fell in love with anime. It was fast and quirky, but I always felt like it had some sort of depth, whether intentionally there or not, and there was something very melancholic and real about it. It was surreal, but relatable. As a kid, I had this feeling that flcl was showing me what I would come to experience as I grew up. In such a short time, the show managed to convey relationships between characters that were short and sweet on screen, but clearly and successfully led the viewer to infer about the complexities behind them. I'll always love this show.
This is one of the reasons Hercule's is my fave Disney film, there are a few GLARING plot holes but it's a goofy ass ride regardless. And Meg is best princess.
FLCL was (and still very much is) one of my favorite anime of all time, it's in my personal top 10, and as many times as I've watched it, to this day I can only scarcely tell any of my friends what it's about. It's something that has to be experienced by a person in the 6 episodes. The characters, the music, the emotions, it's so brilliantly confusing and I've loved it through today! And with the premiere of FLCL: Progressive, I had to sit and watch this one again! Glad to see you talking about it, great stuff.
Glad you talked about striking moments that stay with you. For me, one of those moments absolutely was in FLCL. In "Firestarter," when Canti was floating atop the burned remains of the school, and Mamimi mistakes it for a religious revelation, when the crescendo for Hybrid Rainbow hits...man. Chills. A tuning fork going off in my soul.
I FELT THE SAME! i watched the whole thing during a school night a lot of years back, and i enjoyed it... i think? My remaining memories are vague but positive
FLCL is my favorite anime because I don't need to overthink it, I just look at the animation and the music and I just feel moved and emotional for no fucking reason. I get goosebumps everytime I see it.
I like it when a movie/series/book/song/picture is stupid, as long as it's stupid on purpose. The first Pacific Rim was stupid and Kill la Kill was stupid, but it was quality stupidity.
it's funny that you bring up the first series like this because I remember watching this for the first time and absolutely hating it except for episode four that was pretty fun but it would take many rewatchings to get me on board about how good it was and man do I love it now precisely for all the things you said in this video a great summation of what makes this anime great!
I watched FLCL for the first time last month, honestly didn't care for it, which is frustrating because I really, really wanted to like it after hearing it praised so much.
Third here. I just hated it when I first watched it a few years ago after getting my expectations raised so much, doubt I'll be able to bring myself to give it another chance
Adhec Rodriguez It's has nothing to do with getting or understanding the series. It's a time and place piece that most people, even younger people now will probably not have the same experience as those who watched it as it aired in 2003.
Adhec Rodriguez it definitely falls on the "right place and right time" to really apreciate FLCL. It really was a product of its time, catching references from all pop culture from the end of the millenium. The bullet time scene, for example, feels so dated today, but back then it was really a novelty. Even little things like the coloring of the frames. The use of digital painting is the norm today, but FLCL was really Innovative on that regard. It also threw a wrench at the over-thinking anime that was everywhere after Evangelion, showing that you can make a show about fun and forget all the deep stuff. So yeah, you "had to be there" to profoundly feel what FLCL is.
I'm sitting at my desk eating some microwaved spaghetti topped with tons of parmesian cheese and the flavor of juicy meatsauce and the soft and slippery noodles whilst listening to this seamless commentary on just having fun is pure bliss I have tomatoe sauce on my white shirt and I dont care this is the ultimate video on enjoying things cause you enjoy them and trying to delve further does lead to interesting analysis on meta level of shows, cinemotography, and general storytelling but theres always a bedrock to every analysis that doesn't impede further introspection but rather its a casual reminder to just enjoy these things without pressure I love my introspective sci-fi shows but I also like seeing a kid get slammed into with a vespa or seeing a robot jam his way out of his brain, swallow him up, and then proceed to crap him out all the while going for groceries
Mother's Basement: Saying "Turn off your brain and enjoy fun" is insulting Also Mother's Basement: "In FLCL, you don't have a brain to turn off in the first place, so don't analyze it" It's true though. the meaning is in the feelings you get, not the analytical sum of its parts
FLCL has always held a special place in my heart. It was the first anime that I watched and it was at my friend's house down the street. It was a rollercoaster and I loved it more than anything else I'd watched until that point. It got me into anime and completely changed my life. I still listen to the pillows to this day, over a decade later.
I’m 27 years old . First watched this on adult swim when I was 12 years old & idk why but I’ve always had love for this anime . I grew up threw away all my old manga books just cause I wasn’t into them anymore yet still kept my flcl books . Matter of fact their still in my room today haha . . Funny thing is i don’t even know why I liked it so much or still do . Lol 🧐
Good shit man. Thanks for exploring this aspect of the show more deeply. One of the main reasons I love FLCL so much is precisely because it is the perfect marriage of spectacular, dumb fun and thoughtful reflection. And like you said the reflection is there if you want it but it doesn't impose itself on the viewer because things move so quickly and chaotically. Wish I knew more on just how Gainax was able to pull that off. Such a balance is incredibly difficult to strike. Maybe a future video? :D
I liked this anime a lot but the last two episodes weren't up to par with the previous eps imo, the two best episodes were: firestarter(ep2) and swing the bat(ep4) Those two episodes were really something else, just absolutely amazing, haven't watched progressive or alternative yet, are they worth the watch? And are the pillows ost still banging?
God, this video is so good. Whenever I tell friends this is my favorite show ever there really isn’t any particular reason why besides the feelings I get whenever I watch it.
is it fooly or cooly?? anyway I think you nailed it with the comment that it makes you FEEL. FLCL isn't something to break apart, but it's something that evokes intense feelings. Feelings that apparently last for decades.. it's really held up in my eyes, and I'll always be appreciative of the impact it's had on my life. Thanks for this vid, man.
Its designed to be extremely rewatchable and you will catch new things each time. If you revisit it again after significant personal growth it will certainly open upto you in new and exciting ways. Masterpieces are few and far between but this is one. ❤️
This video is awesome because it's the opposite of the usual FLCL video where you dive deep into the meaning of everything, here you just appreciate the absurdity of the eye and ear candy that FLCL is and it's refreshing. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about the sequels.
That was great! I totally agree that while having heavily heady shows has a lot of things to say about the human experience, a show that laughs in the face of all of that is SO important too. Human experience is nebulous and therefore being so forward about what everything means in a work can appear ridiculous, and therefore a little stupid. While I don't know that I agree that turning your brain off is necessarily the thing that occurs while watching FLCL, but having a seemingly singular vision of someone's personal experience come to life before your eyes. It is very much about feeling and not so much about logic, and that's why FLCL makes sense as a whole even though it doesn't seem to make sense logically. It's a story purely based on emotion, while a Ghost in the Shell or Serial Experiments Lain is one derived from "logic" or "philosophy." It is definitely ok to feel stupid when watching FLCL for sure though!
KLK falls a bit closer to the 'you need to think' part of the list then the others. That's not saying it is some uber-deep series like Monster or LotGH. But some effort was undoubtedly put into giving it some themes and making those themes presentable, understandable, and relatable both in and out of universe.
Thanks bro! This is my favorite anime of all time. I watched FLCL when I was in high school and the confusion of this show really describes how life for me has been on a whole
I'm just really happy the show is back.... I've always wanted another season. Watched it when I was like 12. I get that feeling still every time I watch it. The ride never stopped. Loved every moment of it. My heart. :')
Brooo this was the first anime i ever watched when i was 8 years old at 2:30 in the morning it literally birthed my love and appreciation for all animations i always wanted ti make a cartoon/anime just like this
I love this take on FLCL. I feel like this 'analysis' really stands true to all of what FLCL is. Taking my own experience w/ the two Gianax stables you mentioned it makes perfect sense. I spent actual years delving deep into Eva. While FLCL I watched over the course of a week, enjoyed it, maybe I learned something maybe I didn't. But I have no need to keep going with it. Yet a few months later when I bought it without hesitation because I knew I'd definitively want to watch it again. It was dumb fun, I didn't get. But as you said there was one scene that made it all so important. For me the scene between mamimi and canti struck such a cord. If you ask me what it means I won't be able to tell you. But it is still very important to me.
1:48 It's that Tomino-esque thing. saying it's gundam but basically it's giant robot anime. Right? so he must be doing it. i know hes doing it. doing doing it FOOLEY COOLEY
Really late but when I say something is “my favorite” I always say “but that doesn’t mean it’s good” bc I saw something in it that can’t put to words, my brain is hooked to it even if intellectually I find it ok or bad in terms of story beats or even writing but there’s something about it that got ME. And I can rant to you how something could’ve been better bc they did this and that wrong but I can still say I love it bc it makes me feel that way.
You know, I loved this show when it first aired on Adult Swim. Then after first hearing that it was going to get new seasons a few years back I watched it again. It was much, *much* better than I'd remembered it -- it had thought put into it but said it was okay to not think too hard and go with the flow, and it said that you could just have some fun but had enough heart to still say something worth listening to. I hope with every fiber of my being that the new seasons live up to it, because there are few pieces of media I enjoy more than FLCL.
Literally my favorite anime of all time. Everyone I show it to just stops at the end like ".. Can we watch it again..?" Soundtrack OP. Hope the sequels can live up to the original. Thank you so much Geoff-Senpai. Edit: boutta cop that LootAnime subscription just for you my guy
The shots in 5 centimeters per second is the reason i love it so much. You explained it very well, for the first half of the video I thought it was stupid to watch it a show just to watch it and not comprehend it but man now i definitely understand.
Definitely needed to hear this. Sometimes you just wanna see cool shit happen. I adore story, but there are just those moments in anime where you're jaw drops and you just warchin awe of amazing art at work. And with that my habir of watching random ass anime openings is validated huehue
That's a pretty good take away from it. FLCL did pretty much what you said. First time I missed most of it and it was confusing. Second time, still missed a bunch, but it was about 7 years later and it was a wonderful romp. And of course I just recently was inspired to go back through and once again, not just caught, but understood way way way more than I did 10 years ago. And although I didn't catch the "it's okay to be stupid" meaning, I ended up with a life embracing feeling that anything will be okay and after revisiting I am incredibly happy that it's back and could just be something the world needs. A big smack to the head and a "deal with it, it's okay". (Grammerly thinks I'm wrong with almost everything I have to say these days, I let the lines stay, it's been removing me from my writing).
Hey, Whoa there. Whoa. Whoa. .....Whoa There. ........Your being unfair to Transformers by comparing it to SAO, Transformers at least has giant robots fighting.
I personally think when I watch flcl I feel the awe you talk about this video. But at the same time every scene speaks to me on a very personal level. Despite the Batshit crazy stuff happening on screen it makes me feel and remember how I felt when I was younger and I don't have to search or analysis to find these themes. FLCL is a master piece and the only piece of media wether it be anime tv movies books or video games that makes me feel like that.
Yeah it's a movie that should be seen. There's an emotional kinetic energy to it that surprised me. I think there's a vibe to it that really makes me think of 'A Place further than the Universe' and 'Your Name' for more recent stuff. To go off of something older I'd say there's inklings of Nausicaa.
Thank God for posting this... I went through a good bit of my teenage life remembering how much I enjoyed watching flcl, but always being concerned that I was missing things. I mean I was, but now I feel a little less insecure
Thanks for a great video! FLCL remains to be one of my favorite anime series ever, because of how fun the series is. Everything about the series still manages to make me feel excited! Even though I can appreciate the subtle and not-so-subtle themes within the series, but the main reason I still love the anime is simply because it is fun!
FLCL is hands down my favorite anime I've ever had the pleasure of watching, for the exact reason that it's ridiculously fun to watch. And I'm so glad the first episode of the new season knocked it out of the park and felt just like the original. From the stellar soundtrack(GOD I love The Pilows, every anime should have their own Pillows) to those absurd and bizzare scenes that make you go "What the hell is going on?", there isn't a part of FLCL I don't love to bits.
Episode one: wtf is going on
Episode six: wtf just happened

It was from the youtube channel kaptainkristian, which has a lot of great videos

Yep
For me it was the last one liked, because literally everything else left me unfulfilled afterwards.
I hate its flaws and concerning implications but I understand that no other genre is willing to be as stylistic or bonkers and I accept that
can someone explain to me why is this anime so great (or bad in some point, just tell me your opinion) im planning to watch and just want to know what makes this anime so great

I agree. FLCL broke all the rules and demonstrated just how free, fluid, beautiful, and bat-shit-crazy anime can be.
certainly one of the best from that era

You know the animation of Avatar was *heavily* based on FLCL? Well, you do now.
Now that you mentioned it I can kind of see it. Avatar just didn't go off-the-walls enough for it to be really apparent.
It's all clear to me now

This is 100% true and why I think the first watch of it is the best because of how confused you are, because that's how it's supposed to be
I had one of those moments...
FLCL got me into anime. It changed my life. For the better? Debatable.
We weren't watching out for the woman on the Vespa
FLCL is also a "This thing you liked as a child is even better now that you're older"
FL CL 2 better be called Fooly Cooly Tooly
I fucking wish.
Jorji Costava I didn’t even know p2 was out yet
Jorji Costava thank you for your help but ya boi lives in Ireland:/
better than i expected still not as good as the original in comparison of first episodes
So far your mind shall be blown.
First episode just...
Refreshing.
Watching this as an adult made me realize that I understood this show more as a kid
This is what normal anime looks like to non-anime fans. Now I know how they feel.
Back in middle school
Staying up late at night just to watch FLCL
Negi Kitsu I did too dude, takes me back man.
I think every kid stayed up late when toonami came into their life i would know😁
This is how I feel about Genndy Tartakovsky's work. He was never really into realism. Everything was melodramatic, bigger than reality, like 3 act opera. I swear watching Dexter's Laboratory as a kid physically altered my brain.
Limey Lassen same.
Our anime club is going through FLCL right now. I have to say, I'm loving the style. We're watching the final episode tomorrow. It's freaking awesome.
@@robertfuller5024 nooo why dont my school have this huhuu
You know it's a Geoff vídeo when an SAO rant cut is shoved in out of nowhere
Brandon Roberts is impossible that it just sucks and worthy of hate
Well SAO is his favorite anime.
Brandon Roberts It's a dead horse, but always fun to beat on, because it deserves all it gets.
Paulo Machado
It's a dead horse that just keeps coming back to life.

I agree Kobe is the GOAT
aspect of the frog nothing can happen until you swing the bat
i started watching the series yesterday, what surprised me is just how fun it is and the sense of crazy kinetic energy it has
This was a lesson that was most profoundly hammered into me by 2012's Cabin in the Woods by Joss Whedon.
Reminds me of watching magical beasts and where to find them the first time. Granted I was on shoots that first time but still
Me and my boyfriend just finished rewatching it in preparation for the new seasons airing on Toonami.

Having watched Re: Start I can safely say that FLCL Progressive is Fooly AND Cooly. FOOLY COOLY!
Both progressive and alternative are ass tbh.
I was so confused for like 70% of this show.
10/10 would watch again.
Confusing indeed yet one my first anime/ my fav anime of all time and god the music...🤌
@@ruggs0_037 dawg why would you watch flcl as ur first
Glad you talked about striking moments that stay with you.

I second this. Then again maybe we're just not feelings people.
Third here. I just hated it when I first watched it a few years ago after getting my expectations raised so much, doubt I'll be able to bring myself to give it another chance
Depends on how old y'all are. I'd say 16 or 17, maybe even younger and you might have a different experience.
I'm sitting at my desk eating some microwaved spaghetti topped with tons of parmesian cheese and the flavor of juicy meatsauce and the soft and slippery noodles whilst listening to this seamless commentary on just having fun is pure bliss
I have tomatoe sauce on my white shirt and I dont care
this is the ultimate video on enjoying things cause you enjoy them and trying to delve further does lead to interesting analysis on meta level of shows, cinemotography, and general storytelling but theres always a bedrock to every analysis that doesn't impede further introspection but rather its a casual reminder to just enjoy these things without pressure
I love my introspective sci-fi shows but I also like seeing a kid get slammed into with a vespa or seeing a robot jam his way out of his brain, swallow him up, and then proceed to crap him out all the while going for groceries
Mother's Basement: Saying "Turn off your brain and enjoy fun" is insulting
Also Mother's Basement:
"In FLCL, you don't have a brain to turn off in the first place, so don't analyze it"
It's true though. the meaning is in the feelings you get, not the analytical sum of its parts
I liked this anime a lot but the last two episodes weren't up to par with the previous eps imo, the two best episodes were:
firestarter(ep2) and swing the bat(ep4)
Those two episodes were really something else, just absolutely amazing, haven't watched progressive or alternative yet, are they worth the watch? And are the pillows ost still banging?
finally someone understands that art is about feeling, not about if the words and logic make sense or not, bless this guy
An honest question. Why does FLCL look more like a work of studio Trigger?
Pretty sure Gainax dissolved and a lot of their staff went to work for Trigger, but I maybe pulling that claim out of my ass.
No, you're correct. Core Gainax staff split sometime ago into Studio Kharaa and Studio TRIGGER.

anyway I think you nailed it with the comment that it makes you FEEL. FLCL isn't something to break apart, but it's something that evokes intense feelings. Feelings that apparently last for decades.. it's really held up in my eyes, and I'll always be appreciative of the impact it's had on my life. Thanks for this vid, man.
i don't know, when i saw this series, i was confused and never understood it then just forgot about it
don't understand. Just feel it.
Its designed to be extremely rewatchable and you will catch new things each time. If you revisit it again after significant personal growth it will certainly open upto you in new and exciting ways. Masterpieces are few and far between but this is one. ❤️
I remembered back when I was 10 I saw this ungodly abomination, it's good to see it rise back from the grave.
*Haruko best gal!*
This video is awesome because it's the opposite of the usual FLCL video where you dive deep into the meaning of everything, here you just appreciate the absurdity of the eye and ear candy that FLCL is and it's refreshing. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about the sequels.
Just finished this show and people call it a masterpiece, they say that with every anime but I’ll rate it a 8/10
That was great!
8:45 You may have noticed it, but Kill la Kill is missing from this list
KLK falls a bit closer to the 'you need to think' part of the list then the others. That's not saying it is some uber-deep series like Monster or LotGH. But some effort was undoubtedly put into giving it some themes and making those themes presentable, understandable, and relatable both in and out of universe.

"To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to appreciate FLCL."

Amazing analysis
enpizzle it was ok lol. I love the show a lot more then this video...or hard bread
I'm trying to find a place to see Lu over the wall now
The shots in 5 centimeters per second is the reason i love it so much. You explained it very well, for the first half of the video I thought it was stupid to watch it a show just to watch it and not comprehend it but man now i definitely understand.
of course I feel stupid I mean spend hours searching anime RUclips videos

Definitely needed to hear this. Sometimes you just wanna see cool shit happen. I adore story, but there are just those moments in anime where you're jaw drops and you just warchin awe of amazing art at work. And with that my habir of watching random ass anime openings is validated huehue
FLCL is the Ulysses of anime.
Ulysses has an anime
Ulysses has an anime already
Yeah, if you only have one chapter.
Robert Baillargeon And Homestuck is the Ulysses of the Internet.
It's more like the Catcher in the Rye of anime...

I personally think when I watch flcl I feel the awe you talk about this video. But at the same time every scene speaks to me on a very personal level. Despite the Batshit crazy stuff happening on screen it makes me feel and remember how I felt when I was younger and I don't have to search or analysis to find these themes. FLCL is a master piece and the only piece of media wether it be anime tv movies books or video games that makes me feel like that.
please talk about lu over the wall !!

*What does FOOLY COOLY mean?*

Way back when the show first aired I read it (or one it's several other names) means "twisting nipples."
But what if i am stupid?
