  • Today I'm revisiting a little piece of nostalgia from my formative years. Fooly Cooly (or FLCL) spoke to my teenage angst in a very powerful way and it's taken until now for me to really figure out why... oh and stick around to the end for a BIG update!
    Oh also Incels take notes...

Wish you the best and here's to hoping this video gets the attention it deserves

Do you think the story is also kinda incoherent because trauma affects memory? My teens are a huge pile of distorted one-offs with huge stretches of nothing in between due to intense bullying and suicidal ideaton. Makes my teen years very incoherent as a result.

    • @PsychoSocialism

Thats possibly part of the subtext, but its worth remembering that due to the brain pruning synapses over time, a lot of memories get lost in the shuffle regardless of trauma. So don't worry, you're not alone!

Thank you. I really appreciated that video. I'm 38 years old and watched the series for the first time shortly after it came out in Japan back then. But in contrast to most of the other anime I watched back then, FLCL stayed with me for over half of my life. And I think you finally made me understood why. While I've been working on myself, trying to get over past trauma, I still can see way too much of myself in Naota. But me understanding things like that were always the first step into a better future. So seriously: Thank you.
And I'll have to hang my FLCL pvc poster, which was signed by two of Gainax's staff back then, way higher.

  • @etanol.

you totally got the point. Carl Jung once said that "loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself, or from holding certain views which others find inadmissible." in the whole show, naota and mamimi, particularly, felt all the way like this. even during occurring events everything sounded so empty, as if things were simply happening without an actual profound reason behind it. naota in the beginning said that "nothing happens here (in this town)", then, since haruko's appearance, things started to happen, and yet, he felt lonely. even his family can't understand or even listen to him properly, he feels like he's the only one conscious there. mamimi is the one who can't communicate her feelings, even if she wanted to, she knows nobody will actually understand and she would be told to move on from the past (which is something she doesn't want to), and during the whole show she's desperately trying to believe in an entity that could understand her struggles; that's why she ends up feeding a robot with other's motorcycles, not only to get revenge on those who cannot understand her but also because that little robot, since it appeared, it helped her get rid of something she couldn't do herself, that is, naota brother's number. complemented by the pillows OST, this anime have a particular melancholic theme that screams how they are lost within themselves, and it's a feeling that couldn't be conveyed by the others FLCL's animations.

Before watching video: it's also about the inherent loneliness of puberty, much of the themes and visuals relate back to growing up and going through the awkward phases of puberty.
He likes sweet drinks not the sour ones, same as Amarao who is an analog for Naota if he were to fail to grow as a person and remained childishbwhile trying to act and seem grown up.
Naota is very self conscious about how others perceive him, constantly yelling out of embarassment unable to let any remark simply roll off of him; he is a perfect example of a child who desperately craves to be seen as and treated as a mature adult but is not yet ready to sit in the appropriate headspace.
This contrasts pretty well against Ninamori who exudes a tough and cool exterior unphased by the hectic nature of her parents' lives, while simultaneously embracing a more lighthearted and childish attitude when alone with Naota.

This is a really good video essay, amazing work. Completely agree personally the puberty metaphor angle is super weak due to the lack of universality, a really succinct way you put it couldn't put my finger on why. Still have a large issue in this series with the handling of sexual/ emotional abuse and childhood trauma aspect of this series. There is stuff done well like how the men around Naoto are terrible at identifying it as their own gaze clouds their judgement. Still primarily don't think there is enough care and sensitivity here with the handling of abuse. There seems to be barely a fallout after Naoto is literally groomed when in reality people who get groomed have this trauma often manifest in emotionally devastating way via things like repression, emotional stunting, lashing out, trauma perpetrating more trauma etc.

It's about puberty and dealing with young heart break. And dealing with narcissistic personalities with coming of age and tapping into the giant mecca battles for entertainment. Being sexually attracted to someone when you are at the age of between 13-18 years old is different than 30s. You know that a toxic relationship is bad but the sexual attraction is the drug just as powerful as narcotics. It's called limerence. That was harukos addiction to fill a void. And that is an addiction we maybe reaching for to replicate that 13-18 year old feeling we had when we were young ...its nostalgia...To feel young love affection again. But as we get older there are responsibilities and expectations on both ends...as harukos final words in a narcissistic discard the saying goes "your just a kid...." after everything she knowingly made him feel. She was guilty when she had a depressed face in his bed while he showed affection. 17:47 is the message. And it's almost metaphors a toddlers need Like for breast feeding.

I haven’t rewatched the shows but something always resonated with me deeply in these stories. I strongly agree with your interpretation however, you tiptoed on existentialism when everything in the show alludes to a sort of ambiguity and animosity between the characters and plot. You’re right though the story itself contains a lot regarding peoples relationships. But medical mechanica, i feel like that also talks about the new vices people are finding today to help cope with my loneliness. Never knows best, is featured juxtaposed to fool on cool. Except it also has much larger implications about the kinds of mindsets one can arrive in when they feel so isolated. however never knows best can be interpreted in a positive way aswell so i’m not sure whether or not it applies. idk im just spit balling god wish i had someone to talk to about this show.

Great vid! Here's my defense of the Vespa Woman. She represents cool. She's the girl who smoked cigs in your high school biology class. She's the Aunt who moved to San Francisco. She's Hollywood. It's easy for lonely people to envy or even actively resent cool. They fear that they can't emulate. But wisely, the show advises us not to be jealous and resentful. Share a smoke with the cool girl,be cool about it when she shares a smoke with someone else later on. Cool can be a very positive influence in our lives, when we treat that influence in a relaxed and non-expectant way. Be calm about cool.

I hated progressive as much as everyone else but I legit liked Alternative. . . Tho I think Alternative might have been recieved better if it just wasn’t at all attached to FL-CL. Because it’s just a different show entirely that recast Haruka and all the imagery towards a different thematic end goal.
Personally I think that’s the only way to make a FL-CL follow up. Because there’s nothing really to follow up on in the original.

I dont really watch anime, but FLCL, soul eater, and cowboybeebop are some of my favorite pieces of art in the world. These shows are just such beautifull creations.
My mom has a FLCL tatto, and it was actually my mom who showed me all these good ass animes. Ive tried to watch other shows that my mom never told me about, but for some reason I just dont like any animes other then those specific few that I heard about from my mom. also im 15 and most people my age watch anime or at least pretend to watch anime, but the type of people who watch these really popular animes are really cringe people to be around. and I dont wanna become apart of that crowed, I mean I understand that not everybody who watched anime act the way they do, but I just feel like watching anime has become less about the art and more about the culture, and im not talking about asian culture, im talking about the american anime culture, americans have turned anime into some sort of flex, and a commen question that you'll be asked from time to time "do you watch anime?" why the hell do you wanna do if I watch an animated show, u never hear a mf ask "do you watch cartoons?" some people nowadays see watching anime as an entire personality trait, and it just makes me mad, so I just distance my self from anime I guess because kids my age gotta ruin everything, I just hate the way the worlds turning out its just so stupid. I already see alot of kids in my age range, and I just think how could somebody be so braindead but do so well in school, and im horrible in school. I was homeschooled from kindergarten all the way to the 5th grade when my parents said "yk what maybe he needs to get a formal education". so I then went to go to the 5th grade and I failed horribly because I had no pryor school knowlage. I ended up dropping out in the 5th grade only 6 - 9 months in, I dropped out to sell my art that id have up in a burger restraunt. then next school year comes rolling around, im 11 at this point and I say "yk what.. ima try middle school and see if everything goes well". (*spoiler alert* it didnt.) I was the worst kid in history to ever go to that school (and I dont say that lightly), acordding to them when they had the meeting with me and my parents saying Im kicked out of the school that I had the record for the most time spent in detention. me and my friends were off the wall crazy, im talkin climbing on the roof during school hours all that shit. and as you guessed I didnt learn jack shit in the 6th grade because I didnt even know where to start, everything they were teaching looked like collage shit to 11 year old me. so I got kicked out of middle school and then from age 11 to 15 I have been getting in a lot of trouble with the law, I caught my first case at 13 it was a felony gas station burgerly, in my whole time commiting crime ive gained 4 codefendants, and about 20 felony charges, when I was 14 I went to jail 3 times in the span of 1 year, and all 3 of those times I was going to school in jail, which is crazy because ive done more months in jail school then public schools, but the whole point in my whole schooling story is that I never learned shit, but im still far more wise and have alot more commen sense then kids my age
2 b real idk what this comment is even about or how it started

No shade on anyone who lost it later, tbh sometimes I wonder if I lost mine too soon, but it's certainly in the mind of most teenagers.

This frames why that final battle feels like pure perfection. He gives himself entirely to a new level of open abuse, she betrays him more harshly and quickly than ever, expecting Atomosk's freedom to be her empowerment. Like an abuser expects a new (and often in their delusional minds ""Final"") level of abuse to solve the problem of their victim even WANTING be free, full control.
But in a moment he goes from a surrendered pawn, to a empowered warrior who refuses to be crushed (literally by the giant hand) as part of his abusers game and manipulation. Turning her excitement and glee of total freedom to use him forever for her own desires, to an previously unseen level of unhinged rage at his empowerment to end her control, despite honest caring and love remaining for the abuser.
Now, as an adult. I get why this amazing, awesome, chills educing moment. Had such a vague, sad, hallowness to it as well. Because it's the realization of the desire of every lonely youth or abused person, but it ends in a way we know as we age, so few abusive relationships do.
Far to many are destroyed by that unleashed and unmasked rage when they reach that moment, either at their own hands, or at the hands of another. That moment is a beautiful depiction of one of the hardest and most powerful life experiences anyone can go through, and succeeding. whether the abuser is someone else, or yourself. To Think You Can, and then be right.
Amazing video, new sub for sure, thanks for opening my eyes to new ways this still remains one of my favorite shows of all time. Cheers.
