I make crocheted catnip toys and they take so very little yarn. I use up my scraps this way. And I donate them to a local cat rescue group. Have been doing this for five years now. Each cat that gets adopted out gets one of my catnip toys plus food and other supplies that go with the adoption. it warms my heart! ♥️

I made magic balls out of my scraps and then went over to Jayda and stitches to find out how to make that double strand granny you suggested. It will work perfectly for my scraps! I can make the squares in the heat of the summer (Georgia USA is very hot) and sew them together during the fall and winter to make donation blankets for a local animal shelter and our fire department! I inherited a HUGE bag of scraps. Brand new yarn cut into short lengths and in several different colours, for a crafting project. A lady I knew passed away and her family didn’t want the yarn and my yarny heart just couldn’t throw them away. So, I joined some of them using an overhand knot and ended up with a large ball full of knots (the lengths were too short to keep weaving them in). I paired this with a contrasting colour and crocheted a wrap, using a V stitch, with a border in the contrasting colour. It was really pretty and the ends that we’re showing just added to the character of the wrap. As I write this more lengths are being knotted together (I drafted in help). I will make more wraps that will go to a homeless charity this coming winter. Thank you for sharing your video.

The magic knot...I have been hearing about it and thought I should look into it. This is great. Outside of textiles it is called the fisherman's knot. It probably has several other names. In jewelry making it is used on cording to make adjustable necklaces. I should have realized knitters and crocheters would find it useful as well.

    • @urbanfrog1
      @urbanfrog1 Месяц назад +2

The issue with the magic knot is that if you clip the ends too close to the knot it will come undone, sometimes while working the item, but often in the wash after the item is finished. I prefer using the weaver's knot. You can clip the ends right up against the knot so there is nothing sticking out, and it won't come undone.

I throw absolutely NOTHING away when it comes to yarn pieces. Now, all yarn that I would have tossed in the garbage is instead put into a little ziploc bag. I save everything from fuzz to tiny snipped off ends. I buy size newborn baby socks, and when I get enough pieces to 'stuff' a baby sock, I fill it with the yarn pieces and add some dried catnip. You just stitch up the end. These were my cats favorite toys. Sadly, my cat passed almost a year ago, but I'm still saving my little bags of 'stuffing'. I know animal shelters can use these toys.

I make "confetti blankets". It started with a bunch of yarn scraps jumbled together, and I set out to untangle them. At times, the tangles were just too tough to untangle, and I resorted to scissors. I took all these odd lengths of yarn, joined them together and made cuddle blankies for me great nieces. I started with a hexagon and just worked it up as a giant granny hexagon, with all the colura in there. The girls love them, and im working on one for their mum for Christmas. Her favourite colour is blue, so ive actually bought several skeins of blue yarn in different shades to keep that as the main colour. Other colours were chosen because they have an underlying blue tone. Ill have to find something else to work on for now, though, as it's got too warm for crocheting with a blanket in my lap. Hmm, maybe squares for a blanket for my sister?

I love scrapyarn projects. And people actually bring me bags of it 😂😂😂
You have chosen a lovely selection!!! ❤
My go-to is shawls but my favorite for the moment is 'granny squares with a circle in the middle', even small scraps will work 😊
The magic knot works fine, BUT do not cut the ends close, especially if it's acrylic. The yarn moves when washed and too often the knots open. Leave a small tail, so the knot doesn't open and slide as easily, when wet... and just weave it into the next stitches. 😊

I've actually been saving all of my scrap yarns, because once I finish all the worsted weight WIP's that I started and never finished, I have a plan for them. My Grandmother was a crocheter, like me, but she was also a quilter. She made crazy quilts for all of her adult, married children out of scrap fabric from their lives. Once she got her adult children's quilts made, she started making quilts for her grandchildren. As I'm the oldest, I received the first of those, I got mine for Christmas just after I turned 16. Mine wasn't a crazy quilt, it was a Granny's Fan quilt based off of my favorite color, purple.
Well, I intend to use all of my worsted weight yarn (or as much as I need to finish the project!) to make a crazy quilt Afghan blanket. I don't know how big I intend to make it, and it's going to have all different colors in it, from light to dark, colors that match and colors that don't. I plan to do this by assigning each color with a crochet stitch, or at least, that's one of my ideas... I haven't completely decided yet. But it will be made entirely of scrap yarn, with black as the border, both between each stash block and around the entire blanket.

Good Morning Elise, this is a fantastic video. I love all the projects but definitely a few stood out for me. Also, I have been using the yarn join method for several years and it’s the only one I do. The granny shawl was my very first shawl I made and actually still have it. I think it was about 5 years ago that I made this. Jayda’s blanket might be on the hook soon as well as that rug. I think I purchased Mable as well but have yet to make it. Butttt man o man do I love that kitty.. I may have to purchase that one. And of course those cherries and strawberries.. and I loved Melissa Gilbert as Laura Engles… a favorite show back in the 70’s, I had no idea she was making fabrics. I’ll have to check it out but I don’t sew. Anyway, excuse the novel, just so much fun packed in the 15 minute video. Have a wonderful day. Thank you

I recently purchased the Mabel Chicken pattern so I’m so glad you included it! I’m a chicken mama who loves her chickens! ❤ I will be making 3 of them to give to my daughter in law because she had to give her real ones away when she got sick. Since these require no care😉, she can at least have a flock she can hug!😁

I love your chicken! I have been using scraps to make flowers for years. Since you're a fan of Attic24, i was inspired by her beautiful flower wreaths and so i just make many different types of flowers with my scraps and then when I have enough i use them to make a wreath. I have also used scraps to make larger bouquets of flowers for my desk. I think flowers are great way to use up scraps. I'm surprised you didn't mention baby clothes. Wee tiny booties and wee tiny hats are perfect for scraps. Things like baby sweaters and whatnot can use more than just scraps but little booties and hats don't take much yarn and i bet you could make some beautiful color combos for them by using that magic join method. I still rely mostly on flowers but you have inspired me to try the bunting.

What I've been doing with my scraps is keep them together in a bag, and when the bag gets full, I join them all together into a franken-yarn ball, and I've been working on a moss stitch blanket with all of it. It's like a "2024 in yarn" thing and its already nearly 3/4 of a regular blanket length

Hi Elise! I love Mabel the chicken! You showed so many beautiful pieces. I love making shawls. So I think the Granny Shawl might be my favorite! I also really enjoy almost anything Jayda Institches but I don't care for doubling up worsted weight yarn. Maybe a lighter weight in that pattern for a blanket would work for me!
Always love the energy and positive vibes in your videos! Thank you!

As a caveat with the magic knot, don't use it with slippery yarns like Caron Simply Soft. It comes undone very easily and you'll be sobbing when your knots come undone. I've had it come undone several times with that yarn. If you do, I'd recommend still leaving tails to weave in or using fabric glue.

Another great way to use yarn scraps is to make lap blankets and donate them to nursing homes/ assisted livings. I work for a mobile x-ray company. The residents can use lap blankets to go outside when it's chilly if they use a wheelchair. The blanket is short enough to still be warm and cover their legs, but not long enough to get caught in the wheels. They love that!

It's one of those things I wish I would have made time for but now that I'm retired I want to get back into it, hopefully the arthritis in my hands won't be too much of a hindrance.
