This is extraordinary my dear friend Busted halo - I hope your halo remains unbusted. Sharing.
Contrary to what the video says, Advent does have a penitential nature to it - not as much as Lent, but it includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting and disciplining our hearts for the full joy of Christmas. This penitential dimension is expressed through the color purple, but also through the restrained manner of decorating the church and altar (take a look at the GIRM n. 305 and n. 313 for specifics on this...that is the General Instruction of the Roman Missal if you are not familiar with it.)

@Chente25 Yes it was viewed as a mini Lent in the early church and in many churches still is I believe.
Advent begins this year-2013-on December 1st.
A marvelous message. I put a link to it on my Episcopal church's Facebook page. (Incidentally, some churches use blue for Advent as Mary's color and to distinguish it from the purple of Lent).

Regarding the purple in Advent mentioned below: yes, it used to be intentionally linked to the purple of penitential Lent, as it, too, has been considering a period of fasting.
Back in '78, the Lutherans in the USA, following at least one Scandinavian tradition, switched to blue for Advent -- a color of hope, which is why Mary is often dressed in blue in traditional paintings. Much more suitable.

It is a period of preparation, repentance and penance........hence the purple.
@Chente25 When we look ahead in Advent, both to Christmas and to the Final Coming, we cannot help but be drawn into repentance, because the manger must lead to the cross. It just does not have quite the same intense focus that Lent does on our sin and our need for repentance.

Very nice, but one quibble: "everyday" is written as one word rather than two, i.e. "every day.” As one word, everyday means "routine, usual, normal"; as two words, it means ’Sunday through Saturday.”
