I use a 3 blend with 4 and top with a 6. I like it a little bit longer but seriously thank you! My son is on the spectrum and only lets me touch it. I’ve been using your method since finding this video for going on about 3 years now. Everyone is so impressed when I say I did it when the compliment his hair.
1. Start with the longest cutter/clipper all over, 2. do the shortest up to a bit above the ears, 3. do the middle-size in the border-area to blend in. (You can also use two slightly different middle-sized ones, to accieve a even smoother blend..) ♡
I just cut my hair this morning with my razor comb and told my son, who is mixed and has slightly curly but thicker hair, that I was going to learn the clippers. I've scissor cut his hair for most of his life, but now that he is a pre-teen I've been paying a pretty penny to keep his hair done nice at the barber. Soooo, this post is right on time! Thank you! What an adorable little ham you have !!
Yes! I already had the clippers... Because I used them to shave our doodle. After cleaning them I used them on boys (2.5 and 4.5 yo) I was nervous about going so short but it worked out great! Now they can't pull each other's hair. I also cut their hair outside and then just used my leaf blower to blow off the hair. They loved it! Thank you for all of your tips and tricks.
I have followed you for years and just discovered my favorite youtuber has a short video on the exact thing I was looking for? Thanks many years in the future!
Your boys are so sweet :) I always cut our kids hair at home too, for exactly your reasons - saves money and time. Just a few minutes at home vs. a trip to town.
thats so cute, hadn't thought of that. We do put a mesh container up with all the hair we brush off our dogs. hang it from a tree and the birds just love it :)
This is awesome. I've been cutting my husband's hair for quite a few years to save money, and I am by no means an expert. I also cut our son's hair every other haircut (alternating with our hair stylist).... only b/c he isn't the best client for me, but for some reason he does so well for her. 😄
@@mypresentdelight Yes her boys are super cute. We save so much money by doing it ourselves. There's a kids' salon just down the street from me and they charge about $25/cut. I couldn't even imagine dropping $50 every 6 weeks to get their hair cut. I'd probably find a $10 barber instead if I ever decided to stop cutting their hair.
$25!?! That is incredible!!! I haven't minded paying for our girls to get their haircut (although now I do their's too) because it lasts much longer, but even $10 every 6 weeks would add up!
Awesome! I have been wasting so much money at the salon every couple of months. Kids haircuts are starting at 30 bucks! I knew there had to be a better way. I am gonna give it a shot.. Thank u!!😊
Same deal with my son. He's never been to a barber/salon. I've always cut his hair at home with clippers only since he was about 2-2 1/2 yrs old. He's now 10 and wants a different style. I suck with scissors and he's been asking me to learn to blend because he wants the top a bit longer. Your video helped alot. You're right Mom, their hair grows back so fast. I mentioned taking him to a barber or salon the other night and right away he said "no". I'll leave it up to him as he gets older. Otherwise, he just loves when his mommy cuts his hair. LOL
Hi, just wanted to say thank you for the video! I was struggling with teaching myself because all the other videos were from professionals and they used scissors! Yikes! Then, i came across your video and was able to follow along. My son's hair looks really nice now and I was able to save $20, which is great for a single mom on a fixed income. Thanks so much for posting and your boys are absolutely adorable!
Thank you for this! With this quarantine craziness going on, we can't take our 3 year old to the stylist like we usually do. His hair has been driving me nuts, might give this a try 😄
I’ve been doing the same thing for my boys for about 10 years! Now my older son is almost 13 and wants more complicated styles so I do take him to a barber. Doing it at home saves so much money!
Great job! We did the same when our boys were that age! I loved it - had fun & saved money too! Be prepared when they get older and more independent that they will want a barbers cut!
Gaaaah! Your boys are so cute! I only grew up with a sister so I’m just now getting acquainted with the World of Boys with my 3-month-old son and already I can tell I’m going to love being the mom of a boy. Thanks for saving me a pretty penny when his hair starts to grow! 😄
I will be doing this because we won't be going to a barber shop any time soon. Thankfully, I had purchased all this back in summer. I will finally put it to use!
No way!!! I could have used this video 3 days ago when i used clippers on the twins for the first time! So glad you made a video on this! Again, way more informative than the video i found on RUclips lol. And boy do your boys look so much alike. Wow! My fraternals don't even look as much alike as your boys do.
Yes, aren't genetics a funny thing?? My twin sister and I have a brother that is two years younger and when he got as tall as us around 5th grade everyone thought we were triplets, then he got taller and everyone thought he was older ;) But, regardless of how much they look alike, your boys are going to be so grateful for each other!!!
Such a cute family. Love that you home clipper the boys hair, personally I wouldn't cut the sides so short but that's only because I don't like such a shaved head look for my son 😊
Good rule of thumb, always cut your kid's hair 1-2 weeks before the start of school to skip that "weird" phase. Either way it won't matter much in the beginning of school. Kids forget pretty quickly for small things like that.
Great advice. I'm about to do my husband's and son's again (using one clip all around) and I always mess something up. Poor guys. One time I cut the back of my husband hair up to his ears 😬. Good thing it wear hats 90% of the time.
Your tutorial is so easy and straight to the point. I did the haircut to my son now and the sides and back have patches coz he moves a lot! His top looks like Gage's hair though!
So cute. I've been cutting my boys hair for years and years. Each of the three has a different texture. The oldest has SUPER thick, straight hair. I can't mess it up. It seems to fall perfectly every time. We do short on the sides and I measure with my fingers on top...the top is three fingers. Lol...like pouring whiskey. He is 18 and likes it a little bit floppy. The 15 yo has fine, straight hair and cowlicks everywhere. I just do my best. Lol. The 12 yo has thick, wavy hair. Sometimes he likes it buzzed, sometimes it is kind of a skater look, sometimes it is faded...I've done it all to that child's head. It grows back!
The irony with this is I was just trimming my 2 1/2 yo's hair earlier tonight and then I saw this! Only trick is he's black so the hair is totally different ;) but I'm determined to learn how to take good care of his hair and trim it well! Not brave enough to dare a fade, but I'm working toward it.
I cut my boys and husbands hair too! And I do it very similar to you- even have a thick hair kid and thin haired kid. So funny. We also (for a little while) let them use our phones/handheld game to keep them still. My younger kid likes longer hair on top so I have just started using scissors. I felt so proud when it turned out ok. I think it is awesome to cut at home!
I cut my boys' hair in much the same way. My 2nd son was less than a year old when I did his first haircut. I sat him in my lap and laid his head against my chest to keep him still. I let him touch the back end of the clippers to feel the vibrations so it wouldn’t startle him when it touched his head. He did great. I let my boys watch cartoons on the iPad during haircuts.
I'm gonna try this on my, almost 2-yr old boy. Place we take him to doesn't cut it short enough. I have the Whal clippers & guards. Thankfully my boy loves getting his haircut. Thank you for this very informative video 😊
Good video! I cut all three of my boys hair with clippers and sometimes scissors on top. One of mine has a front colic so I keep it a little longer. I have no hair cutting experience and although it takes me about 15-20 min I still enjoy it and like saving money! I even have been cutting my own hair for the past couple years! Yes I was nervous and I haven’t made any big mistakes with our hair yet. I use to be so picky about who cut my hair. I had a lady I used for 10 years that was the only person who cut my hair. I was tired of paying $60 every time but felt it was justified. One time she cut it differently or wasn’t paying attention to what she was doing and my hair just turned into a mess! So I figured well I couldn’t make it any worse so I watched some cut your own hair videos and never looked back!
Love this!!! I trimmed my own hair the last time, too, when its longer, it is definitely more forgiving and have been thinking that even if I don't do it every time myself, it should help stretch out the time between haircuts!!
Put some powder on a washcloth and the hair comes right off! That may save you/them a bath! I did a 2, 8, and 4/5 blend. I might try yours next! I'm never sure what blend number to use, but I've gotten good at the edging! Saves so much money!

Every two weeks! My husband likes every 4 but I try to stretch out the boys'! And I have hacked at my girls' hair, but I don't think I have developed enough of a technique to do a video on it yet!! ;)
I have cut the boys' hair for a long, long time. Even my husband. Saves so much money and they can pick whatever style they want. We do it in the kitchen, just sweep it up. Shirtless and they grab a shower when it's done. Wet hair cuts better. I also cut the dogs' hair, and they hold still. The Wahl clippers for people will sometimes pull their hair because they just aren't as sharp. I found the pet groomer clippers are so much better and last longer.
Thanks! I've been thinking about this for some time and am going to grab a clippers when I'm out tomorrow. I enjoy your videos so much, so practical. We're amidst a move from Iowa back to our home in Sodak, and I'm anxious to downsize to a small acreage home and simplify life.

I also cut the hair of my boys at home. But I hated to clean the londry with al the small hairs in it later. So my boys sit naked on a chair in the shower and after they get a shower
Oh my goodness! I was on the hunt for help cutting the boys hair and found you! Such a surprise to see and recognize your lovely face 😊. Good to see you Dawn (and fellas) and thanks for the tips!
I’ve always cut my husband and son’s hair too! Can’t imagine spending $40 a month for them to go to a barber 😱 I’ve just always had them stand in the bathtub with their shirts off and it’s a breeze to clean up after.
Hello can you elaborate on what you do?
3 to blend 6 on top and 4 lower part?
1. Start with the longest cutter/clipper all over,
2. do the shortest up to a bit above the ears,
3. do the middle-size in the border-area to blend in. (You can also use two slightly different middle-sized ones, to accieve a even smoother blend..)
♡
I know this video was made almost 3 years ago, but oh my, your boys are so very beautiful! I love how Gage leans into Dawn. Heart-melting.
He is soo adorable smiling to the camera & cuddling to you!!
Thank you! He is definitely my most cuddly!
Seriously, one of the cutest little boys ever! Thanks for sharing, I am going to give it a go.
I just cut my hair this morning with my razor comb and told my son, who is mixed and has slightly curly but thicker hair, that I was going to learn the clippers. Gage's smile is infectious! And that's the only infection we need today! Thanks for showing this to the world.
I have followed you for years and just discovered my favorite youtuber has a short video on the exact thing I was looking for? Thanks many years in the future!
I was the barber, hair stylist, and dog groomer in our home. Saves tons of money. Cute kids. TYFS.
“Any mom can do this!” says the title. All the video shows however is the Dad doing it. Girl Power!
😂😂😂 that's what I said while watching the video!!
Your boys are so sweet :) I always cut our kids hair at home too, for exactly your reasons - saves money and time. Just a few minutes at home vs. a trip to town.
Who else is here trying to learn how to cut hair because of corona?
I did my sons last week, handy tips!
Me
ME!! LOL
Haha, I tried this before Corona, and it really is fail proof! I like my boys hair longer in the front though so I scissor cut that area.
Guilty!
I followed this as my first time attempt. I did a 6 on top, 2 around the crown and 3 to blend. Thank you for the instructions!
How did it come out? My boys hair needs doing and I’m about to have a go
Yes this looks good without looking crazy short to the scalp
He smiled the whole time during the video such a cute little boy 😍
i just watched this to see Gage! He is just the cutest, and boy, was he a flirt. So fascinated being on camera, cheek to cheek with his mommy!
"If its not perfect, give it a few days and you won't be able to tell" haha :)
In the Summer, we cut the boys hair outside on the driveway! No clean up and the birds can use the hair for their nests!!
Haha, so do we! Depending on how long it's been between hair cuts, sometimes there is quite the pile of hair in the back yard lol
Oh that's a great idea!!!
Genius!!
thats so cute, hadn't thought of that. We do put a mesh container up with all the hair we brush off our dogs. hang it from a tree and the birds just love it :)

Only 5-6 minutes?? My boys would love to get their hair cut by you. I take much much MUCH longer but they are incredibly patient. Bless their souls.
Me too! Takes me about 30 minutes! But we have saved so much $$. Weren't her boys the cutest? :)

Omg!!! I’m totally going to try this! My 2 boys need haircuts every month I swear! It’s like $75 for them both! I’ll save so much money 💰 thank you!!!
Awesome! I have been wasting so much money at the salon every couple of months. Kids haircuts are starting at 30 bucks! I knew there had to be a better way. I am gonna give it a shot.. Thank u!!😊
Ok so we just cut the hair... im very happy with results. He loves it. So thanks Dawn. 😊

Dawn, I adore you for your minimalism...but just found this video when my five year old asked me to cut his hair. It turned out great!
Thank you for this! With this quarantine craziness going on, we can't take our 3 year old to the stylist like we usually do. His hair has been driving me nuts, might give this a try 😄
Kiera Wolff same girl that’s why I’m here I just got my clippers for my boys 5&3 they’re hair be WOOF
Yep me n my 5 yr old hit the barber shop up..but thats a no go now..going to just let mine grow but got a set of whals for him..

Yes, that would make things a little different, but I bet over time you will get the hang of it!!!
This lil man Loves the camera! every moment he gets hes engaged. 😂😂
Corbin posing hand on hip is a hoot!

Aaaaw that cheek to cheek so super sweet, i love it!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Your boys are cute thanks for the tip as a mom trying to be more frugal this is great 👍

Oh these are great ideas, thank you for sharing!!!! :)
Oh my goodness! How cute is he!!!
Your videos are always really helpful! I'm about to have my 3rd boy, so I really need to start cutting their hair at home. Thanks for the tips! ☺️
Three boys!! Yes, it will save alot!!!
Thanks for sharing! I did not want to use scissors so this video is just what I needed!
I'm gonna try this on my, almost 2-yr old boy. Place we take him to doesn't cut it short enough. I have the Whal clippers & guards. Thankfully my boy loves getting his haircut. Thank you for this very informative video 😊
Saved me!! The shag look was getting out of hand but my kid looks awesome now!! Thanks!
Thanks for making this. My kids
hair situation is dire. Also you have quite the cutie pie there.
Put some powder on a washcloth and the hair comes right off! That may save you/them a bath! I did a 2, 8, and 4/5 blend. I might try yours next! I'm never sure what blend number to use, but I've gotten good at the edging! Saves so much money!
Such cute kids and good job cutting hair - the $ saved adds up fast !
I haven't had my 7 yr old sons hair cut since February 2019, its almost to his tailbone! Its beautiful BUT he has pretty severe autism and ADHD, and one of his stims hes developed lately is pulling his hair out of his head 😭 This video is a huge help, thank you. He moves a lot and gets jabbed by scissors some times. We are going to put his hair in ponytails to cut and donate to Wigs For Kids, but I didn't know what to do after that as far as finishing it up with clippers. Thanks so much!! Xoxo 🌻
Your son is absolutely adorable 😍
Thats a great clip! I do my hair in summer at home, but with all this going on we can't get him to a solan. So I do have the the clippers, I'll try it..
Thanks!!
Cutter size 1=3mm, 2=6mm and 6=18mm . Thanks for the video 😁
I keep it even simpler and just use the #4 over his entire head! I can't believe you make it 6 weeks! I cut both my husband and son's hair every other Saturday. We do it right after dinner in the kitchen so we only have to vacuum and wipe down countertops once. Then it's straight to the bathtub for my son to get the rest off his neck. Will you be showing how to cut your daughters' hair too? I just had a little girl and need that video!
Every two weeks! My husband likes every 4 but I try to stretch out the boys'! And I have hacked at my girls' hair, but I don't think I have developed enough of a technique to do a video on it yet!! ;)
He stole the whole show. He is adorable.
Just went for it and thanks for the encouragement!!
This video came at the perfect time! I cut my boy’s hair for the first time last night after watching this. Turned out great, thank you!
Yay! So glad to hear this Suzanne!!!
Gage is the cutest! He always makes me smile. =)
This is the cutest channel.
Thank you for the help!
Works great for adult too, just tried this morning and it's perfect ! Regards from France.
Let's give it a try today! Thank you!
Gage is the cutest little boy! ❤
What lil cutie pies ♡♡
This worked wonders very simple. Thanks very much.
I'ma stay at home dad this is gonna help a bunch thanks a million !!
Super helpful!
I've been cutting my son's hair since he was about three. He's 18 now, and he does NOT like the idea of going to a barber. He insists that I be the one to cut his hair. I used to do hubby's as well, but he goes to the barber now, and I'm OK with that!
I also have Wahl clippers and do pretty much the same thing, but a tad longer because that's my son's preference. He uses a towel as a cape and then he gets to do the clean up afterwards.
Love that he still wants you to cut his hair! And I cut Tom's hair now to save money, but I would be ok if he went back to a barber, too ;)
Thank you for this, tried to take my 3 year old to a salon today and he had a complete breakdown, so now I'm at home watching videos
My boy hates haircuts, I was influenced by your video to try your techniques it was a battle but I managed to do an ok job.
Gorgeous little boy!
Kudos for having such calm babies. Mine would kick and punch 1000 times throughout this video
Agree that a 5-minute haircut at home is plenty adequate for little boys. These parents have common sense (which today is not so common).
Your boys are so cute! Their hair looks great! Thank you
Great concise easy to follow video whoop whoop thanks!
I also cut the hair of my boys at home. But I hated to clean the londry with al the small hairs in it later. So my boys sit naked on a chair in the shower and after they get a shower
Do you ever have an issue with the hair clogging the drain? Thinking of trying this!
He is so cute!!!
Omg sooo cute! Both you boys are so handsome and your girls are smart and lovely. 😘
Thank you for your help! My baby came out looking like a big kid 😭. But it was time.
I’m too much of a perfectionist I do a 1 all over 🤣
Thanks a lot, great tutorial :)
So helpful, thank you!!!
Gage is so darn cute!
Your boys are so stinking cute. So sweet
Oh my goodness! I was on the hunt for help cutting the boys hair and found you! Such a surprise to see and recognize your lovely face 😊. Good to see you Dawn (and fellas) and thanks for the tips!
How cute are they :)
Thank you!!! :)
I’ve always cut my husband and son’s hair too! Can’t imagine spending $40 a month for them to go to a barber 😱 I’ve just always had them stand in the bathtub with their shirts off and it’s a breeze to clean up after.
Oh that's a really good idea!!
U make it look so simple!!
Haha, we've done it so many times now it really does feel simple ;)
Would doing a number 3,4 and 8 work with this?
Adorable 🥰
Soooo cute
Ok trying this tonight, fingers 🤞
OK so I just tried it....not the beat, but I'm going to give it a few days and Def try again when it grows out
such handsome boys! We do this at my job too it realy saves a lot of money!
Thank you!!!
Great video! I do something similar with our boys. I cut my 2 year old's a week ago and I still miss his mad professor curls 🙁😂 x x x
Thank you! Curls would be harder to cut, for sure!!!!
