Checo fans, genuine question. Are you enjoying his Red Bull era, now that we're over 3 years deep? Do you not think he'd be showing a better, happier version of himself, outside of this team? Given how unpleasant 2020 was for me, as an Albon fan - I do somewhat empathize. At least Sergio has managed a few wins, same can't be said for Alex... 😅😢😭

I was stunned when he was announced as a red bull driver back in 2020 (finally, after years, he was in a top team). But he being no longer the lead driver is hard to swallow every year since then. But, although he has had some stinkers (Basically all of the second part of 2023 and this 2024 Q1 exit streak), I would never change those magic moments where I was yelling to the tv, while he was leading the monaco gp back in 2022, Azerbaijan 2023 when he hold off Max, 2021 when Hamilton did outbreak himself... But 2023 and now 2024 are damaging his image as a racing driver heavily. I say this as a mexican, and as a checo fan.

Hear me out: RB doesn’t care about winning the constructors championship, only the drivers championship. Everyone remembers that Max won the championship in 2021 in a RB, but nobody cares that Merc won the constructors. Winning the drivers championship gives the team more notoriety, and the only upside to winning the constructors is more prize money, which RB can offset with Perez’s sponsorship money. Even if they finish 3rd in the constructors that’s around $24M lost when surely Checo brings in more than that from sponsors and merch sales

It’s a mix of various factors imo. Checo was lauded as a guy with inbuilt traction control and being incredible with tyre management. The RB atmosphere is toxic, Dr.Marko is a root cause of that along with Jos Verstappen. The team is Max’s and no matter what anyone says it must be very tough for Checo mentally to always feel he is number 2, considering he was always given a fighting chance before. The Red Bull is set up for Max and it’s obvious that Checo isn’t getting any favours development wise.

It then starts to make sense why his leash is so long at Red Bull. The backing of an entire country, and sponsorships galore? What's that compared to performance? Nothing, apparently.
Honestly? They shoulda gotten Danny Ric into the Red Bull LAST YEAR. Not because he necessarily deserves it, but just to get something different in the door. He would honestly perform similar to Checo (maybe marginally better), and then AT LEAST we could get Lawson in an RB and not stall the entirety of their junior program.

  • @KingWeir
    @KingWeir 7 месяцев назад +1

    There are two main issues.
Firstly (and honestly the main issue, as it also just adds to 2nd problem), is that Red Bull is built to be the best that it can be and Max is such a good driver, he can make it work, which is why he's dominated. Every season, especially the earlier seasons of these rules, Checo has driven well but as they push the car more and more to be quick, only Max is able to drive it.
IF Max also struggled, then they would design a car that was driveable first and quick second but since Max can drive it, its forced onto Perez to try and adapt.
You hear it all the time at other teams, literally Ferrari's main design objective this year, was to make the car more predictable for the drivers, so they could maximise its potential.
Perez just isnt as good as Max, no offensive to Checo, he is actually a very good driver, he's probably one of the best "paid" drivers to ever grace the grid.
And for a mid-table team, he's perfect, obviously brings sponsors but is a good enough driver to lead the team and reliable enough to pretty much always bring home some points, is ability to do crazy long stunts on tyres, able to bring home some surprise finishing places as well.
But all of that is based on him driving a car that is built with him in mind as well and in an environment where there isn't as so much pressure to perform, yes he was alot younger but we also saw this at Mclaren, where at times the pressure got to him, so much so, even had Jenson on the radio, telling him to calm down on one occasion.
So put him in Alpine or Haas or whatever and he'd have great races again I bet, without that pressure to perform week in week out.
So what Red Bull need, is a driver that can either drive anything and those are rare talents. LH in his younger days (out driving the Mclaren in the 09 season comes to mind) or Fernando Alonso who just seems to be to ring the neck out of whatever machine he's given (also his Honda days with Mclaren come to mind).
But of course a talent like that would also threaten Max and Red Bull clearly don't want that headache again, after Vettel, Webber days.
So they are going to have to try and build a car that is also driveable for their No.2 driver, as we've already seen, Gasly, Albon, Perez etc decent drivers, drivers capable of leading other teams, struggle horribly at Red Bull of late.

I think I remember you can be 0.7s-1s off pole and only be p5, heck sometimes mercs are more than 1s ahead in the 2019 races. In AD 2019 Albon was 0.9s off pole in P6, only 0.5s off Max in P3 then Lando in P7 was 1.6s off pole, a 0.7s gap is crazy.

  • @DeathBlocks

So my first thought on Checo being signed: Red Bull don't entirely care all that much about the constructors, they have the fastest car yet he is 5th, he is going out in Q1's every now and then. They are basically saying well we are banking on the fact that the 2-3 teams behind us stay close together and keep taking points from each other.
Second thought: They might have been thinking well what else do we do. All the drivers who are definitely better than Perez are already signed to other teams, except for Sainz. So then instead of taking a risk on those who are available and comparable at least (I personally think Albon and Gasly are better for example) why don't we keep the ton of sponsorship money, current harmony and maybe he gets back to his actual form again. In the meanwhile let Lawson grow next year and exercise the +1 option if needed.
Then on other options, we don't know how much was discussed between them and Sainz or who led to the discussion not going forward. Just like how they might have preferred to not have some butting of heads (understandable) Sainz might have been the one who ended it. Maybe he wanted something too long or too expensive.

RB20 is not always the fastest car on the grid, in fact it's rarely, but I would be willing to bet my life that it's the pointiest and least forgiving. Albon's interview about when he was Max's teammate mention that specifically and here we are mid-season again where upgrades make the car even pointier and more to Max's insane twitch reflexes and every year it gets harder for Checo to stay near the podium. Edit, your idea about tossing Lawson in the RB20 is great. Until you get another young talent who can grow into the car, the 2nd seat will always be near-impossible. But you get into the catch-22 of RB rarely letting anyone have a chance.

One thing that I just randomly thought about in the shower was that if Yuki Tsunoda came into the team it would be the best chance ever for sure for a Japanese driver to win a Grand Prix, and surely that would mean Yuki would bring loads of sponsorship money from Japan to do so. Having your name on the side of the first ever Japanese driver to win a race would bring much publicity for the brands.
The last time a new country won a race was in 2008 with Robert Kubica (I know Leclerc won for Monaco, but that isn't a big enough market). I imagine the brand awareness of companies like Petronas and Intel (the decals that were on the BMW that year) increased massively in Poland when Kubica became the first Pole to win a race. And I also imagine that BMW car sales would have increased in Poland as well. Think of what this would mean for Ford in Japan when they begin to supply Red Bull in 2026. They would be able to surely destabilise the Japanese car manufacturers like Toyota, Mazda and Nissan's dominance in their home country.
So keeping Checo for sponsorship money is a bit of a silly excuse, when you have a driver who has the potential to bring in just as much money but is currently in the form of his life. Not as silly as F1 rejecting Andretti because 'they don't bring value to the sport', but still...

It's more of I don't want to support Checo anymore, because he's letting the team down. Max is doing all the work and getting all the hate and getting bullied, he's the one who deserves more support.

Perez is great, he gives RUclipsrs the time to make “Perez is doing good videos” and then switches so they can do their “Perez isn’t good videos”.

I think it’s very simple, if checo does well he’ll keep the RB seat, if he doesn’t, he swaps to Vcarb and takes a mentor role for whichever RB young driver gets the other seat. Yuki to RB, Danny given the boot.
Still an RB driving contract, no difference.

Checo would have zero interest in going to Vcarb. He'll probably just retire sadly.

i think its just a case of having no other options, other than sainz everyone in the top 10 is already tied down. its presumed sainz doesnt wanna be the 2nd driver again so that rules him out. and then the rest of the options just dont seem like an improvement. as cool as it would be to see an albon, an esteban or a yuki in the rb from redbulls pov they just arent as stable. i think they were really relying on daniel improving this year and that obviously hasnt happened, its a bit weird they would announce it so early though.

I think Max will agree to the opinion of giving Liam straight to RBR 2nd seat. He once said that naturally RBR always gives a chance to young drivers and Checo case is just an exception. So I think he'll be okay if Liam or Yuki steps into that seat. Besides isn't it the best way to learn from the best?

I hate to say this but he’s rapidly approaching “pay driver” status. He’ll cost RBR the WCC and I honestly think there’s a genuine possibility he costs Max the WDC if they have to sacrifice upgrades due to his crashes.
He sells a lot of hats though I guess.

I would put the blame on the team, no other team in the grid has had such gap between drivers such as Redbull, Why can’t they build a car that both drivers can drive ? Gasly, Albon now Perez … something is not right

J.P Montoya, Emerson Fitipaldi, Marcus Erickson, Grosjean…the list is so enormous, how the British media is so so discriminating drivers. But when they come to America to get a job as a racing driver, Sergio Perez seems is been in Formula 2, and Formula one he’s been recognized as a good driver and a great team mate. In his last stage of his career, he helped Redbull Racing…4 championships … and still no one believes in him. And please let’s not talk about George Russell…no no…he’s a hero and the best driver in the whole world…please! I just hope Sergio Perez find a better place to work, Indy will be a better place for him to work and away from people that don’t appreciate him. Checo come to America, race and have some fun with us…Andretti maybe?

This is just anecdotal observation but: The RB18 and 19 were a sufficient balance of pace and lack of control - right on the edge of being too loose, but rapid into and out of the corners because of the late braking/sharp turn-in that Max requires. Sergio was probably the only driver so far to be able to handle (for the most part) that oversteer-y nature in the car. It looks like the RB20 isn't balanced in the same way. Still quick, but they've pushed the limit too far this time and even Max is struggling on certain tracks (especially those that have unforgiving kerbs that can upset the balance of the car).
Horner will be thinking that of all the second drivers they've had, Sergio has been the only one to keep a lid on that car for any sufficient number of races in the season, and putting another driver in that seat is a massive unknown.
Do I think Lawson would do a better job? Yes, but then I'm biased as a Kiwi motor racing fan.

Checo is one of the nice guys of f1 . In honesty, you're right , the red bull just doesn't suit him ... honestly, I expected him to go to mercedes , their car would suit him better .
On Ricciardo , he had the same issue at mclaren , it has made a mess of his confidence (which is causing the inconsistency ) , he'll likely get back to his former glory but I knew he wouldn't this year .
Vcarb is an interesting one , it seems they are aiming to make that team somewhat a front running team , so maybe that's not such a bad place to be 👍.

Three words… wind tunnel testing! Perez doesn’t help them win the constructors but he does make up for the financial shortfall with sponsors, so potentially finishing below their rivals gives them a development edge for the next season which is a net positive for the team.

My only surprise is they did not sign Mazepin to run alongside Max.... Max does not want any competition, RB does not want to give him or Jos any competition either. Perez the luckiest man in world sport a 2 year contract for being average in the top team.Perez makes wingman like Coulthard, Berger and Johannson look like superstars

To me the biggest problem is his consistency, even podiums isn’t necessary, a top 5 finish with Max winning plenty races will still get Red Bull that constructors, especially with Mercedes, Mclaren and Ferrari swapping the other top places

Outside of 2021, Checo seems to falter after great starts to a season. In 2022 he was contending vs Max and he fell off after that. 2023 he once again finds himself in a fight vs Max… and then after he dips badly in form. 2024 he puts in good results and now is dipping badly in form.
