- I took a vacation trip to New York in Feb of 2010. I decided to make a stop at Penn Station while I was there. Very busy station indeed!! Seems like something is either arriving or leaving every 5 minutes. Saw a bunch of Amtrak and NJ Transit trains. Was nice to see some Amfleet equipment on the Amtrak trains! Was also nice to see the Amfleet cabcars again. Reminded me of the good old days when they were running on the San Diegans. I saw #9638 & #9632, two former cabcars assigned to the Surfline. I also caught Amtrak #19, the Crescent, departing New York. I learned that #19, as well as many others, are electric until Wash DC or Hartford. I was surprised not to see the P42's.
Thanks for watching!!

Cool Video
Great Video !!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot!!
Thanks... wasn't hard at all! I just went down there, nobody confronted me at all. Maybe it's different now, this was shot 3 years ago
Very nice! :) surprised no one confronted you!
Great Video Man!
Nice video i love NYC !!
It's a busy underground terminal. It's located underneath Madison Square Garden. There are many restaurants, and fast food joints like McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, Taco Bell, etc. There also clothing shops, pharmacies etc.
Great video! How hard was it, honestly to get down to track level? Every time I've ridden Amtrak out of there, you have to show your ticket to even get down there.
Normally diesel engines cannot go into Penn Station because of the exhaust. However the P32AC-DM Genesis engines do have third rail capabilities which will allow them to operate on electric power through that third rail.
Thanks a lot
Here welcome
I Love NYC!
Penn station has that dark old basement look to it
The supposed P42DC are actually P32AC-DM with third rail capability.
Nice video:)
At 1:27 I'm gonna take a guess that's 3511 to South Amboy cause I saw a packed as hell train and it displayed South Amboy. Every time I leave on 3363 heading home, I see 3511 next to me when it's either arrow III equipment or multilevel equipment, it's always crowded!
@truerailfan01 Thank You
@AmtrakCal462 alrite thank you just wanted to know cause im prob gonna do some railfanning there soon
iN Ny,they cannot use diesels in the tunnels, there is a law baring the use of diesels, due to a bad accident in the Park ave.Tunnel leading to Grand Central. So both terminals, had to electrofy.that is it,have a blessed day,God bless.
this is the main terminus of the busiest railroad in the country the LIRR
yes you got lucky, they dont usually let people down on track level if you dont have a ticket
what type of eatery, shops, and things to do around the penn station. Im planning a trip there and will be coming in from the Penn station
@nichols15 Former busiest railroad in the country, they were usurped by their sister railroad Metro North just this summer.
Amtrak P42's don't run to NYP. Instead they use dual-power P38's capable of running either diesel or third rail.
when you were filming did you have any problems with security while you were doing it
i knew they could get to low tunnels but why would they be their i thought that the genises would come in for trains heading far south like the cresent after washington DC
This video was made ⑨ years ago.
My mom and me road the amtrak to miami
@tpe18509 me too!!
@TheNjdevils11 No I didn't, I thought I would be confronted by someone but no
Lol at the chimes, glad we dont have that in the uk so annoying
What about LIRR
Are there no Arrow-EMU´s from NJT going into Penn Station?
ertwander yes they can’t run at penn station
One thing I never understood is why the AEM-7s have strobe lights. What's the purpose behind them?
Captain Transit the white lights flashing is beacon lights
Captain Transit because they need it
WOW NJ Transit AEM-7 that's cool!
It's an ALP-44 but based off of AEM-7
Yeah is a ALP 44

7:20 a genesis in penn station? i thought they couldn't get there due to the low tunnels?
That's a P32, an electric variant, and P40/42/32s can all access Penn Station, as they're designed to barley fit in the tunnels.
at 8:54 and at 7:20 you caught the P-42
It's not a P42DC. Its a P32AC-DM. This Locomotive has the special ability to operate under third rail into Penn station. If it was a P42 there would be smoke all over the place and diesel are not allowed to released there emissions in the station.
