  • The Holden Tent Tarp Shelter is an easy classic tarp configuration that provides protection from the wind, sun and rain from three sides.
This is the eleventh video in a series of tarp shelter layouts.
Without question, a good quality tarp is an essential part of bushcraft and camping equipment. The ability to create a shelter is one of the 3 key elements of wilderness survival and bushcraft skills (shelter, fire & water).
This video illustrates How to Set Up the the Holden Tent Tarp Shelter using paracord and a 3m by 3m Sil Nylon Tarp. Please check out our playlist "Tarp Shelter Layouts and Configurations" for more interesting ways to use a tarp.
The knots used when setting up the Holden Tent Tarp Shelter were the:
"Running Bowline" • The BEST way to tie a ...
"Truckers Hitch" • The BEST way to tie a ...
I hope you enjoy the video, if you do, please give it the thumbs up, comment and share. :) Thanks, Jason.

Hey everyone, here's this weeks tarp shelter. The Holden Tent is a great little tarp layout.
This will be the last tarp shelter in the series for a few weeks while I focus on getting out and doing some trips.

Looks like a great layout. It would be great with a fire out front.

Ive never thought to chuck a line over a branch using a truckers for the point of a shelter. Dunno why, it's so simple! Probably carry that info the rest of my life, cheers!!

I have a 7x9 tarp, but after watching all the layouts of this serie, I'm considering buying a 9x9, more versatile. Thanks for sharing.

One variation I’ve used for past 25 years takes the Holden and anchors a guy line from that stick to the ground about 7ft or do to the front. Then you bring the front flaps to meet at the base of the stick. When it rains, you’re enclosed, but otherwise you can open one or both flaps until needed. I call it the Swedish Wedge. (I’ve seen it called the summit too.)
So your Holden or the Swedish Wedge are a flash to set up and minimal gear involved: four stages and a stick plus cordage. Excellent video! Thanks!

yes I was looking for a tarp tent that did not require the use of two trees for the ridge so this is what I was looking for.

You got that right, simple and quick layout and very similar to half a scout tent except it has the two center poles and a bottom. Well you already know that anyway. It may not be ideal in some terrain or weather conditions but I do prefer being open like that and spacious. I'm relative new to the RUclips survival genre but I do have some videos I'll be posting soon too on options for tarps that produce the same setup results. I'm all in with the larger tarps too in most cases because I hate to be restricted in small space when the weather conditions turn bad on you.

Nice video. I think that this Holden pitch is the second most favorite pitch of all times, after the Plowpoint (aka Diamond pitch).
Some people compain that the open side lets in wind and rain. That is rare though. Always set up with the wind coming from the rear side and, if possible, with brush or trees facing the open side.
If a thunder storm blows up, you can reach out and take down the pole and let the tarp collapse over you until it blows over.

    It’s a good shelter layout.
As for the open front, well I did a “porch solution” to this and posted a few photos. I used a DDHammocks magic carpet which is basically a 1.4m square tarp/mat
The demo thread is posted on a canoe site I contribute to at .... www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/56283-Enclosed-Whelan-Shelter-with-DD-3x3-and-Magic-Carpet
This one really works well and takes seconds extra to do.

Thumbs up to the configuration. Though I did have one glaring WHOOP'S I noticed as I watched. Might I ask (with all due respect) Why did you set it up with the door facing the wind? Setting it up that way will allow the wind to blow away any heat build up, while setting it up the other way, back to the wind, will allow the wind and weather to just roll on over the top.
