Hot damn, I knew a video you’ve been cooking for the past year would be good, but man, you really killed it with this. Funnily enough, this video made me realize why I enjoyed listening to DS3’s soundtrack so much. I always felt like Elden Ring’s soundtrack didn’t have the same intensity that DS3 did. Turns out I’m just a sick fuck who likes listening to loud music at full blast volume with headphones on. Even if the production value is considerably lower in DS3, the “beat” of some of those songs hit just right that you feel the intensity and anguish of it all. I think this was the point Koop was trying to communicate when he said Elden Ring’s wasn’t iconic. I’m not at all educated in music so I can only describe it in vague, nebulas terms, but DS3 has got such raw emotional power that the poorer production doesn’t bother me. Not all the songs are bops, mind you. I was incredibly surprised and disappointed at Nameless King’s theme, especially. Elden Ring has more distinct tracks, with a lot more flavor and variety, as well as better “production quality” and “mixing.” (Whatever the hell those words mean idk) Which does ultimately make it the better soundtrack. Though I will say, I think most of elden rings ambient tracks are just unnecessary, I find the music in areas like Liurnia, Limgrave, and Altus to be too repetitive and distracting. Especially when there’s just no escaping it’s presence. I much prefer the silence in Dark Souls to the constant overbearing presence of music in elden ring. Wasn’t expecting to come out on the side of dark souls as much as I did, considering I have ten times the amount of hours in elden ring than all Dark Souls games combined. So as it turns out, in your attempt to convince people of elden rings superiority, you made me appreciate Dark Souls more 👍 (still love elden rings soundtrack though)
In my mind, every time I hear Godrick's theme, I imagine something similar to what Messmer was doing in the last story trailer. It feels like if the song was part of a horror tale (Something similar to the tapestry that, for example, BOTW uses to talk about the Calamity), talking about all the horrible things Godrick did to others, with the grafting, killing entire familys just to get the right body parts and making all fall with his little army, just to try and be a 1% of what Godfrey was and represented for him, turning into a tyrannical figure. It's such an amazing track, I love it
Aaah Waterflow Dance , the thing that makes me yell " *FUCK* " when Malenia decides to use it on the start of my r1 attack. I -despise- love that attack.
Godspeed and Swans are great but I'd disagree that Godspeed's discography is full of "bangers" since they returned in 2012. There's a reason why most diehard GY!BE fans these days primarily listen to live bootlegs from 2000-2003 because that was the band at their peak and they'll never return to that level again. I think when Swans and GY!BE returned in the 2010's post-rock fans were so excited about having them back that they in turn extremely overrated their new material. Not to say that they were terrible albums by any measure, but just that they lacked the creativity and ambition that permeated their earlier material (especially in GY!BE's case).
I think the reason I still love the Ds3 soundtrack so much (even though I do think ER's is still better) is cause I've basically just gotten used to the bad mixing and audio quality (definitely not nostalgia btw) so I can look past those issues and focus on how the songs connect to the fights and the story (definitely not because of nostalgia). Though doing your quiz was actually kinda mindblowing cause I've barely listened to the ER ost (having not listened to basically anything outside of the game) and I got 9 Ds3 tracks right and 10 ER tracks. (Wildest of which was Lichdragon Fortissax which I've only fought like twice) Anyway, your videos are super well done, man. This 'little' series has been a ton of fun and has made me learn a lot of interesting stuff. Thank you!
I really appreciate how you brought to attention all the specific sounds and how they move. I’ve never really paid attention to atmospheric music in games. I always just wrote them off as effective or not effective.
Very glad I found this video when I did, I’m a huge fan of all different kinds of OSTs and Elden Ring knocks it right outta the park. Everyone trashes the godskin duo fight but regardless of how painful that fight is the OST is easily in my top 3 for the whole game. Praying I’m lucky enough to get some of those sick-ass headphones, keep up the amazing content dude!
Hi, rarely comment on videos but I came to say I really love the soundscapes in music section and can relate so heavily since I tend to get lost on similar genres. I still put on FLCL OSTs from time to time. But what blew me away is when you mentioned Kid A. Radiohead largely shaped my taste in music, particularly the bends, OK computer and Kid A. I used to listen to these albums and transport myself away to another reality listening to these during long transits ages ago, so really understand what you're talking about. Have yet to watch the rest of the vid but subscribing for this great take.
Godfrey fight will forever be one of my favorites in huge part thanks to the soundtrack. Just something about how it compliments his aggression and constant stomps gives me an еrection. And the second phase devolving from an honorable duel to a scrap in the mud with biting and kicking in the nuts both musically and visually.
I'm literally only 13mins into this so far, fuck yeah Reflections of a Floating World shoutout Banger vid so far, honestly idk why I didn't know it was called shoegaze but that's exactly the kinda music I vibe with. Thank you for making this, absolutely masterful stuff
THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD AND THOUGHTFUL VIDEO! First, I loved how you opened up by sharing what kind of music you're into. Also, I liked how you discussed the music in-depth despite not being like an "academic." It was educational for me nonetheless, as a person who listens and doesn't think about the components that go into a piece, so it was thought-provoking. I've always thought there was something very special about the ER ost and it was the first ever Souls game I played. I enjoyed nearly every song from ER and I still listen to the soundtrack habitually. Then I started to play through the DS trilogy, and I hoped it would have the same effect. There was a lack of ambient music that I found disappointing, but the hubs all had very good music and I would say the Firelink Shrine ost from DS1 is probably my favorite. I understand that some people prefer less ambient music, but I would've made my experience with the Souls trilogy a lot better. Nonetheless, I think there are a lot of good tracks from all the games and I loved how bombastic DS3 was. I have a lot of the songs from that game in a dedicated workout playlist, it really helps get me motivated. Gael's ost is the epitome of how excellent DS3 ost can be, but I do agree with you that it can get monotonous with having fairly similar songs throughout the game. It does make it pretty consistent though, which I like. I don't think it'd be appropriate to describe any of the Souls soundtracks as "bad" because they have a lot of their own merits. However, I agree with you that ER has vastly better mixing and production quality, and now you pointed it out I start to notice how muddled DS3 can get with its songs. If they ever make a remaster, I would love to see how they would improve the mixing. ANYWAY, please excuse my tirade. Thank you for the video, it was very enjoyable!
I’m always surprised when I see people downplay Radahns theme, yes it’s slow, but it perfectly reflects him. It has the loudness and grandness of a fight of his scale, the strange organ/strings that represent the gravity soundscape present in astel and fallingstar beasts. The song also has a lot of strangeness in it, because he’s insane from the rot. And finally, the ending is the best piece of music work fromsoft has done in my opinion, it’s a funeral, you can hear people mourning him, as his corpse is carried down the streets, and it nearly brings me to tears every time. Aside from that minor gripe, S tier video. Also 1:10:28 pop off king
Walking into redmane castle for the first time I stood there for like 10 minutes just listening to song of honor and jerren’s announcements about the radahn festival.
I like both. I think most of elden ring's ambient music is pretty bland, but the atmosphere of the areas themselves are great, so I don't mind it much. The boss soundtrack is just so good.
I remember seeing people complaining about the ER OST on release and I was really surprised. It's absolutely amazing. I think I slightly prefer DS3 as the DLC osts are just...wow... and the elden ring ost was solid but not quite as amazing. In any case, fantastic video!
Masstaden Under Vatten by Vildhjarta is an album that completely transports me to a different existence. The art, the ambience, the vocals, the rhythm, literally everything about this project is perfect as a soundscape experience. I couldn't reccomend it enough
I enjoy that you mentioned how the SFX are likely the missing element to remembering these tracks. They compliment the tracks very well, it's strange but I bet if you were to tell people to guess what SFX come from what boss most might be able to tell. I love that as a soundie
This is a beautiful video. I love the way elden rings soundtrack makes me feel. And I'm very excited to listen to a lot of the bands you brought up in the beginning.
I love the Elden Ring OST and you made a great video showcasing that. What's even more incredible is that I find that the DLC went so far and beyond in therm of quality. I felt that they even fix most of the issues that were raised in your video by other creators like the uniqueness and lack of distinction between tracks. My "jaw dropping to the floor" moment was Midra Lord of Frenzied Flame. This track was for me their masterpiece. It starts with those choirs that almost feel distorted and alien, then the cords play this hunting melody reminding us of the merchant and their theme. The energy then swells slowly into madness, overwhelming you to the point of commanding transcendental authority. It matches so well with the visual extravagance of this encounter. He crashes in a fiery explosion going into the second phase, the music doest a perfect switch with some very deep orchestrations and something that sounds like an alarm growing. It gives such a feeling of urgency and panic to that fight. Divine Beast Dancing Lion also is a contender for their best work in that department. I would be very curious to know your thoughts on the DLC music. Peace
@@loopine Oh my bad. Didn't want to spoil anything for you. Sorry about that. Hope you have a nice trip in Japan and a good time with the dlc once you get to it. if you really like soundscapes, the first album that organically turned me onto that idea was explosions in the sky - the earth is not a cold dead place my guitarist friend told me to listen to it because the guitarists for that band know how to shred but they do it very tastefully, i was like "what the hell does that mean, shredding is shredding, how can you be tasteful about shredding" but i listened and then i understood they know how to play guitar with all of the talent of any metal guitarist, but they choose to make that shredding into a semi-ambient soundscape, their music is just incredible. until i got into them, i was a guitarist, and i only had an appreciation for guitar insofar as you know how to play notes on your guitar, I didn't know there was this much depth in just manipulating the timbre of your instrument, it's like this whole new world opened up to me, guitar to set a mood, to convey a scene, to induce an emotion
Lupine, the way you described why you enjoy shoegaze so much is exactly how I would describe why I love black metal. It's just unfortunate that so much of it is filled with crimgy edgelords and racists that I don't want to support... Maybe I'll try some shoegaze. I do enjoy me some blackgaze, a lot of the metal community gives them shit but I absolutely LOVE Deafheaven!
My friend, I have two suggestions: The album Souvlaki got a huge cult following by virtue of its strong atmosphere. Since you're into Black Metal, you know how texturing and ambient elevates the harmonic work. Is not fully Shoegaze, and it's in spanish, but Soda Estereo was the equivalent of The Beatles in Latin America when it comes to rock. Their album Dynamo has some strong Shoegaze vibes, with their song En Remolinos being a pure Masterpiece. Long story short, check out En Remolinos by Soda Estereo, since the atmosphere is truly powerful.
@@enman009 Thanks I'll check it out, I had to take a break and go listen to Afsky because everything Lupine was saying just reminded me of it... The thing I love most is black metal that sounds sorrowful and full of despair like Afsky or nihilistic but not in an edgy teenage I hate the world and wanna watch it burn way but more in an absurdist acknowledgement of meaninglessness of everything while still clinging to hope no matter how futile it seems. Music from people who read too much Camus lol. Think MGLA exercises in futility which is probably my favorite black metal album despite the band members being a bit sus.
@@BBQcheese Well, I might as well search for Afsky. Although I'm not a Black Metal aficionado, I adore bands like Opeth, which used some influences from that genre to expand their sound. Blackwater Park is an absolute Masterpiece, and you can feel some of those influences from that genre. And yeah, we need more Camu inspired music, lol.
I think Armored Core 6 has some truly fantastic songs that people are really not talking about. I love Cries of Coral and Coral Guardian so much due to how the storytelling is in those songs. Rough and Decent is amazing as well and really characterizes Carla well. Even the C Weapon music is amazing in my opinion due to how weird it is. 👍

DS3 is my favorite game ever, and I feel insulted by you talking like this about its soundtrack. But to my surprise, you're right in a lot of points. DS3 themes lack diversity and the audio quality is worse than in ER (to be fair, that is to be expected). What I find most revealing is that after over a hundered playthroughs, very few tracks really stand out soundwise, because if the effect you talked abot at the end of your video. You hear the first bit of the music and it sets the tone, but wverything else just flies over the head, either because you're missing the souns effects of the bosses, or because you focus into the fight and not listening to the music. I have way less playtime in ER and I felt this effect even harder there, so while its soundscape is wider, I wouldn't recognise the tracks any better. Except for Leyndell. That horns may be iconic and recognisable, but they become really f-ing annoying after dying for the 20th time in the city.... But to cap everything off, I love both soundtracks either way, I love the bombastic and sometimes a bit chaotic boss music of DS3 but ER is more refined and a delicate soundtrack in the open world does wonders to the games feeling.
This is my topster from a while back. imgur.com/a/topkekster-3-0-wwh0Dv7 The other massive one with labels would be the /mu/ essential albums list and the shoegaze starter flowchart

Not simply because it is a great track, but because I find myself so deep in thought as to what EB means in the scope of the lore and game of ER. Its something that cannot be appreciated by people who havent played these games which I think is what seperates them from so many.
4:29 Armoured Core 6 has such an underated soundtrack in the fromsfoft community
for me For Answer easily beats it but Fires of Rubicon is still great
its mediocre at best
Yeah it’s excellent. The motifs, percussion and ambience are great
Mid overall. Some bangers here and there
@@naxergss2625it's better as a whole than most soulslike series by the fact it has leitmotifs, that alone makes a proper complete soundtrack rather than a collection of loops
Secret Betrayal from DS3 takes me away completely. It puts me in a fucked up place. Its really short and has a lot of open space, but for whatever reason it's really impactful to me

Silent Hill 2 still has the one of the best OSTs of all time imo.

As a seasoned music enjoyer, I've never heard of most of the bands referenced, but it's amazing how when i heard The Black Ryder i thought "The Verve"! And the UFO sound effects as Hendrix. Definitely have some new music to tunnel into! Cool video man
3:25 Those damn notes... Those were the dark times, man.
Well when you listen to it for 10 hours lol
Bro you won the grand prize, where you at?
Edit: I am not a bot lol just read my community post
In my mind, every time I hear Godrick's theme, I imagine something similar to what Messmer was doing in the last story trailer. It feels like if the song was part of a horror tale (Something similar to the tapestry that, for example, BOTW uses to talk about the Calamity), talking about all the horrible things Godrick did to others, with the grafting, killing entire familys just to get the right body parts and making all fall with his little army, just to try and be a 1% of what Godfrey was and represented for him, turning into a tyrannical figure. It's such an amazing track, I love it

Jumped with joy at the Godspeed/Swans segment HELL YEAH
Good grief take it to a publisher

I don't think i've seen such a good video about game sountracking in so long
"My boy can't live like this"
I think the reason I still love the Ds3 soundtrack so much (even though I do think ER's is still better) is cause I've basically just gotten used to the bad mixing and audio quality (definitely not nostalgia btw) so I can look past those issues and focus on how the songs connect to the fights and the story (definitely not because of nostalgia).
Though doing your quiz was actually kinda mindblowing cause I've barely listened to the ER ost (having not listened to basically anything outside of the game) and I got 9 Ds3 tracks right and 10 ER tracks. (Wildest of which was Lichdragon Fortissax which I've only fought like twice)
Anyway, your videos are super well done, man.
I appreciate that one of of favourite souls creators is also a Music Lover™

Dark Souls III theme is a masterpiece
Eternal City sounds so haunting I absolutely love it. One of my top 3 favorite areas in the game before the DLC

Banger vid so far, honestly idk why I didn't know it was called shoegaze but that's exactly the kinda music I vibe with.

You the man. Impeccable taste in music my guy. Killed it with this video.

This is a beautiful video. I love the way elden rings soundtrack makes me feel. And I'm very excited to listen to a lot of the bands you brought up in the beginning.
You might dig “the angelic process”.
Peace

if you really like soundscapes, the first album that organically turned me onto that idea was explosions in the sky - the earth is not a cold dead place
my guitarist friend told me to listen to it because the guitarists for that band know how to shred but they do it very tastefully, i was like "what the hell does that mean, shredding is shredding, how can you be tasteful about shredding"
but i listened and then i understood
they know how to play guitar with all of the talent of any metal guitarist, but they choose to make that shredding into a semi-ambient soundscape, their music is just incredible.
until i got into them, i was a guitarist, and i only had an appreciation for guitar insofar as you know how to play notes on your guitar, I didn't know there was this much depth in just manipulating the timbre of your instrument, it's like this whole new world opened up to me, guitar to set a mood, to convey a scene, to induce an emotion
Sounds cool, I'll give it a listen
ER ost stick to me longer than ds3 tho

Lupine, the way you described why you enjoy shoegaze so much is exactly how I would describe why I love black metal. It's just unfortunate that so much of it is filled with crimgy edgelords and racists that I don't want to support... Maybe I'll try some shoegaze. I do enjoy me some blackgaze, a lot of the metal community gives them shit but I absolutely LOVE Deafheaven!
My friend, I have two suggestions:
The album Souvlaki got a huge cult following by virtue of its strong atmosphere.
@@enman009
Thanks I'll check it out, I had to take a break and go listen to Afsky because everything Lupine was saying just reminded me of it...

Bro I gotta get that big album chart that was behind you.
