this is inspiring and in an odd way very stimulating to watch. thank you for sharing this with the world! i feel empowered to take apart my TCM-737. it struggles to rewind or fast forward on one end of the tape or the other (more tension)
Agreed. That's exactly what was missing from this video; belt replacement, gear and mechanical lubrication, head azimuth alignment/demagnetizing, tape speed calibration.
Estupendo trabajo. Great job. Please, what type of paper and / or printer is used to recreate the indications of Play, Stop, etc?
Hmmmm ... No lubrication of the flywheel shaft or metal plates crushing against each other? Abrasion marks on them indicate places of contact. A drop of oil would be nice. The pressure rubber roller can be held in kerosene for 2 hours- Will be soft like just from factory.
Back in 2014, I bought a General Electric cassette recorder from the 70s/80s. After using it for a while, the recorder broke and I later found out what was wrong with it. I found out that the tape belt broke and later I got another tape belt that was used for another cassette player's counter. I used that and sure enough, I got the recorder to run again.
Great job with the cleaning and rebuild! However the music still sounded warbly - like it was slowing down and speeding up - after you hit the rewind button.
We see a disassembly, followed by a cleaning and cosmetic make-over, then a re-assembly. Nothing seems to have been repaired or replaced - what was wrong with it to start with?
Am I the only only who see he doesn't repair nothing? Cleaning and cosmetic job. Weird a lot of things ... like he doesn't care about paint his floor and table!!
You seriously used gloves, covered with grease, when you assembled a deck unit? WTF man?! It's not a "restoration", it's a nuisance, heresy! Rubber parts will never work properly after that. And you had to properly align and adjust deck unit after assembling, using oscilloscope and special alignment cassettes... It was terrible...
aligning mono heads is very easy, and can be done by ear, since the tolerance is far less sensitive than a stereo head. None of this oscilloscope and alignment cassette needed.
@@chekiechekie So using gloves covered with grease doesn't concerns you at all? "Restoration" means that device will work like a new or almost like a new. What's worse - even on mono heads you have to use oscilloscope with alignment tapes - it IS crucial to make the device compatible with stereo decks. Even few angular minutes of a heads misalignment will fuck it up. ^_^
@@Ashen2501 sheesh, stop being such a drama queen! If you look at the video based on what he achieved - to make an old tape recorder look awesome, and totally clean up the mechanism and make it work (albeit not perfectly), then he is to be commended wholeheartedly. As for your oscilloscope and alignment cassette, consider that the frequency response of the mono head ranges from maybe 80hz to about 10khz or maybe even less, and rubbish dynamic range, honestly speaking, aligning the head by ear is sufficient and doesn't deserve more time than that. There are two screws for the head, the right hand side is fixed and doesn't need adjusting, and the left hand one is the one needing the adjustment. Put on a bit of dance music with a lot of treble, or some classical music with a lot of brass and high strings and i bet you that you'd do just as well as an oscilloscope. Anyway, to my mind there is no WTF about this video at all. Just chill out!
Excellent work! One of most hardest restoration on youtube.
If your talking about small stuff probably the hardest
What a craftsmanship!
I totally respect you.

You need to change rubber belt from motor to driven shaft. Contor belt is good idea to be changed as well.
U need to change the belt, pinchroller, lubrication of gears, calibration of motor speed and demagnatize the head...
Agreed. That's exactly what was missing from this video; belt replacement, gear and mechanical lubrication, head azimuth alignment/demagnetizing, tape speed calibration.
wish there are more ppl like u,we have tons of vintage players ready to be repair!
It was good how you took it all apart and completely rebuilt it like new .
That was fun to watch and you did a great job.

That looks proper amazin! Very stylish well done
Wow. One of most satisfying videos! U're a Genius! Awesome!
Intricate work, I think I'd have been lost after taking the second spring off it! :)
Amazing work, thanks for sharing!
Either you were working in SONY or you recorded the dissasemply or you are the Superman.
You record disassembly lol

Once the pinch rollers go hard and shiny, I usually throw them out and fit new ones, especially in decks that are 40+ years old.

Impressive skill. Wish i had it!
Wow,i like it very well. Thanks!
Great job! 👍
please let us know what are the chemical used for restoring the plastic parts
Hydrogen peroxide
Very good job 👍
taping stations antiques😘
Super 👍
Why do you retrobright a black part?
That puzzled me too.
Great job with the cleaning and rebuild! However the music still sounded warbly - like it was slowing down and speeding up - after you hit the rewind button.

Very well done
Good work.
Good.. where can I buy one?
I bought it at a thrift store
Very good job good cleaner
What liquid did you use to sold the plastic cases?
I use hydrogen peroxide
what was being used at 12:08 I have a similar dent/scratch on my cassette and I want to fix it.
Thanks for very inspiring video....which solution did u use in that pink lights pot?
Alot of hard work
I like this type of tape recorder
Excelent !
29:10 it still has issues. The tape isn't being played at the correct speed. You would need to change that belt, motor, or both
I honestly prefer the yellow look. Adds age to the product
Excelente 👍👍👍👍👍

Good work
Very very good
The rubber belt is worn out. You need to change it with new one. Maybe need to check rubber role who move tape in front of head.
rattle can paint is only temporary. it tends to deteriorate over a short time. proper paints require an activator, and a spray gun
Did you replace all the electrolytic capacitors ?
Well done.

I had this type of cassette player/recorder, but of Natinal Panasonic.
Gee, I'm usually just content with a rubber ducky in the bathtub.
what a horrible noise coming out of it its still broken !

reassembling seems impossible!
Not as impossible as some stereo boomboxes.

You forgot all capacitors.
Waste of time honestly
It's a low quality mono deck, not worth for anything besides an old ZX Spectrum
Waste of time? What rubbish.
It will get yellow again very soon :( These restorations aren´t permanent. I´ve tried many times.
why not just use your phone for music, and send this to the recycling center where it can be made into more phones
How boring is that
Number 1.
