I hear ya. Thats what she prefers to do sometimes. She keeps the doors locked and basically keeps an eye open for me. I'm not going to force her to explore if she doesn't feel like it. So I let her do what she is comfortable with if she doesn't want to explore with me.
I worked at that Winn Dixie for several years during High School. There was a thriving Hardware store next to it, A resturant started out in one of the places and turned into a local Bar. Real Estate offices, Drug Store , Dry Cleaners, and that lower level housed a Veternarian. It was a nice place at one time and owned buy a reality company that had a reputation of letting properties run into the ground and not keeping them up. When the anchor store WinnDixie left the whole place went down the crapper real quick
That's exactly what happened! We used to shop there and live in Forest Oaks. When the highway 421 interchange was decided to be where it currently is (about a half a mile to the south), that was the nail in the coffin for this shopping center.
I use to work at that Winn dixie as a cashier at forest Oaks in Greensboro NC. I was 16 years old and worked there 3 years until I went off to college. This use to be such thriving shopping center back in the 1980's. So sad the owner let it go under. I also learned how to drive a stick shift car in that parking lot. It was a great shopping center at one time.
Me too, it was my first public job and I ended up as a Key for the front end. Loved that job and that shopping center! It is so sad to see the shape it is in now!
There is an old shopping center in Lake Charles LA, I'm 42 and can never recall it being anything. Funny thing about it, not ha ha ironically. It survived Hurricanes Rita and Lauren.
The graffiti left behind and windows broken by vandals is heartbreaking; the entire shape of center is. When doing urbex, you leave 3 things: 1. Respect 2. Admiration 3. Footprints. THAT'S IT!!
You've found a lot of abandoned Winn Dixie stores in NC! That looked like it was a cool shopping center back in the day though. Has a very unique layout.
They've had at least 2 major rounds of store closings over the last 20 years. Winn Dixie started closing stores around the same time that Publix was expanding. They just cant compete with Publix.
OMG IS THIS ACES ADVENTURES!!!!! I have a request for you, If you ever go exploring in canada you should go to Atlantic Canada because in my Area there is an abandoned Walmart and a dying mall in my area too it is called the Village Shopping Centre and that area near where I live is really dying, next time you go to canada you should go and check out those areas in Atlantic Canada and if you have the chance check out the abandoned Walmart and the dying mall in St. John’s Newfoundland!!!!!!! Also another thing you should check out in Newfoundland is Mount Pearl Square it is a dead mall in St. John’s Newfoundland also!!!!!
this shopping center closed because the winn dixie left and that took a large part of the owners revenue out of play but a new one a mile or so down the road opened up with a food lion
Video Showcase! I know the owner and can remember renting NES games and movies from there. I went to the Winn Dixie many times. Had my hair cut by Bobby at the salon when my Mom would go there. Lots of memories.
I live close to here. It was a great shopping center in the 80s and thru early 90s. My brother and many friends worked in the Winn Dixie in the 80s. There was a hardware store beside it, a nice restaurant, a bar, a florist, a drug store. In the separate building a dry cleaners, hair salon, veterinary office. The smaller businesses moved out before WD closed. Management/ownership of the property let this happen. Food Lion wanted to mover in around 2005, but the owners refused to do updates. The rest is dilapidated history. Other shopping centers were built in the area because the owners would do no improvements. Very sad.
I worked there it was my first public job. It is so sad to see what it has become. I am glad for this video. To have some record of it. I wish now they would just tear the poor thing down.
@@gregorycyr9272 cool! I live in Hickory. It's forest oaks shipping center, if you look it up there's some info online about it, im not sure of the address but I think its in the southeast part of town.
@@jasong3652 Ok,thank for the information.I was thinking that part of town myself. There is a place on West Market that is run down as well that has seen far better days.
What a cool find, for the abandoned Winn Dixie and rest of the shopping center! Have a Winn Dixielicious Day! Have a KMartlicious Day! Have a North Carolinalicious Day!
One reason for all the mold...was due to a fire that started on the roof of Winn-Dixie in 2010. It's sad to see it go but there is way to much damage. It would need to be pushed in. What a waste!
Great vid I like it keep up the great work Also if you come out to Wisconsin there is a abandoned Kmart in Cudahy Wisconsin and some other abandoned things like a abandoned Payless shore source.
I remember shipping there with my four small children. I would out all four of them in a basket that I would push with one arm and then I would pull a second basket from behind for all the groceries! That was in 2005, so it hasn’t been THAT long ago since it shut down. Crazy how quickly things go into ruin, and the vandalism sure didn’t help.
Jeez Wallie, what a find! Especially subscriber requested. Damn that's a lot of mold in the Winn Dixie. Currently, my mom's side of the family are actually down in NC, but I'm here still at home, petsitting and watching over the house. Would kill to explore this.
Really cool late 70s architecture! The split level section with the shops below is interesting…and you could see where windows were above. Another odd feature of these older Winn Dixie stores was the addition. To the left side. From above, it is obvious, but they did a good job of blending it with the original building from below. Another sign is how the ductwork is laid out. The store would have been served by a large split system, and the addition would have had its own large rooftop unit.
I’m a local I live in the town (Forest Oaks) that surrounds that place. Never been there but that shopping center has so much potential. A place for the highschool and middle school kids to go hangout on Friday nights before the football game! (Southeast)
I grew up near that shopping center. I’m pretty sure the main problem was it was on a well and septic system. The businesses there had a lot of issues with water run off and sewage. The city of Greensboro wouldn’t run lines to the area so the stores slowly moved especially after the Winn Dixie closed. I think the rent there was also a little high. The Winn Dixie was the main draw to the shopping center and after they closed, because of the water and sewage problems, they couldn’t find a grocery store to replace it. There was also a great hardware store there too. I did not realize there were businesses located in the back so that was new to me. It really should be demolished and redeveloped.
I was hoping you would get into the old dance studio in the back of the building, but I guess that was one of the doors that was welded shut! So many memories of that shopping center growing up. Can't believe it's like that now.
Many friday/saturday nights in middle school(88-91) a friend and I always snuck out of my house and walked up there to get a soda. I used to buy comics at the pharmacy. It was once thriving when we first moved to Forest Oaks in 1987. However, when talk about how disgusting it looks, the people that lived in FO were just as disgusting with all of their gossip about other people!
I remember shopping here, I still live in the area and it’s so sad that this shopping center went to hell!! There was a dance studio behind the Winn Dixie I took dance at for many years!! I remember the hardware store, dry cleaners and vet!! There was also a bar hair salon and tanning bed!! It’s such a shame!!
Wow that place is hurting really bad I won’t do that it was cool looking before all that happened and it can’t be saved and I know how they got on top of the roof that ladder
Wally what would you do if someday you ever ring a doorbell to an abandoned building and it opened all by itself with no one in there would you go into that haunted building
Great find for sure Wallie! Shame some people find it necessary to destroy and vandalize. To much time on their hands I suppose. Maybe get a job? Anyway, Stay safe out there. 👍
Dang I drove by there a few weeks ago. That’s sad. I remember in 2004 there was only two suites being used but this area Ned’s to be condemned. Very unsafe especially for high schoolers roaming around and can get hurt
What a weird design for a shopping center-can’t see much on first impression, a two level design that only has one way in for cars and faces away from the road, a large section on “top” that is pretty hidden, and a plaza of sorts that just helps mask most of those businesses on the main level.
Whoever they lease out to will be responsible for doing the interior buildouts to accommodate their needs. The owner won't pay for it, they will leave it in the hands of tenants.
the vandalism started after all the stores closed and the place was abandoned. It was bought a couple of years ago by another company and who knows what they will do with it.
This is in my new town. Been curious af about it but haven't approached bc I know the local PD would be all over me. Was completely unaware of the other buildings there. Sad, I've contemplated very often what I could do with the space but yikes! such disrepair. The City is foolish for letting it rot this way; now just a perfect spot for a shooting gallery or crack den. We also have 3 distinct downtowns; two in horrible disrepair the other largely owned and operated by a one dude notorious for stiffing his contractors. What a gem this town could be, with lots of space and two rivers. Alas, the City is run by stodgy old men who can't see anything beyond the cobwebs in their own brains 😢
If heaven ain't a lot like Winn-Dixie, I don't wanna go... If heaven ain't a lot like Winn-Dixie, I'd just as soon stay home! If they don't have The Beef People, like they do in this here store... Just send me to hell or their competition, it'd be about the same to me! If only they had gotten Hank Jr to do a catchy commercial like that...
It's a shame that people have to vandalize or graffiti the place I hate it when people do that bc than it makes new people who want to do Urban Exploration a bad reputation
It's all good. I'm so behind on everybody's videos myself. I've been so backed up with videos and when I catch up, I did like 30 more in Texas. I have so many to edit. Haha
It just said "Video Store" when I was growing up. It was cool. You could take a few cans of soup/veggies to the owner on Saturday's and he would let you take home a tape for free or discounted. It was great.
This shopping center is a reflection of our society. Everything has turned to shit. The good old days are gone...
I gotta say, Kayla is a brave girl sitting in a car alone in abandoned locations while you explore unfamiliar places.
The place they are exploring is in a really nice community and neighborhood nothing is gonna go wrong!
I hear ya. Thats what she prefers to do sometimes. She keeps the doors locked and basically keeps an eye open for me. I'm not going to force her to explore if she doesn't feel like it. So I let her do what she is comfortable with if she doesn't want to explore with me.
I think the thing that astounds me most is someone is still paying council rates for the property. Yet, they aren't doing anything with the place.
I worked at that Winn Dixie for several years during High School. There was a thriving Hardware store next to it, A resturant started out in one of the places and turned into a local Bar. I bet it was nice when open 😀
Thank you for exploring this old Winn Dixie I didn’t realize it was that bad been so long since I’ve been over that way at least 18 years .
There are still Winn-Dixie stores throughout Alabama, Florida and Georgia.
We got 3 Winn-Dixie stores still open in Montgomery, AL. We used to have 10. Most of the abandoned Winn-Dixie's are still left abandoned.
Birmingham is about the same way. There are maybe 5 or 6 left when at one time there were probably 20 or more in the area
Now grocery stores are giving wally the shaft
That lower back area is just bizarre to me. Even when this place was open how would you even know to go down there? Strange layout. Great vid!
There was a veterinarian's office in the lower part around back. They had a very good reputation, so being back there didn't really cause issues.
I took my cats there.
We used the veterinary behind there. There was big wooden fancy signs that led you behind there. It was nice. Back when you could trust people.
My shopping center where i live only has a few stores and no one maintains the place so i decoded to clean the windows for them since there so dirty
There is an old shopping center in Lake Charles LA, I'm 42 and can never recall it being anything. Funny thing about it, not ha ha ironically. It survived Hurricanes Rita and Lauren.
