  • This is a little detailed look into how we go about swinging flies for steelhead during the winter. We use both switch rods and regular spey rods. When winter steelhead spey fishing conditions be challenging, And in this video, we most certainly deal with a few challenges. This video is a little longer than anticipated it to be. I hope you find it interesting, And informative.
Final note; if you would like to Fish with us. we still have dates available with our gate service, right now going forward.

This is extremely useful as great lakes spey has never had such in depth videos. To me as semi experienced guy. Im very interested to hear what guides you on colour choice. I think you've covered size well for spring and winter but i wonder about the smaller patterns vs bigger patterns...as sometimes it seems your knowingly casting to a pool of fish vs blindly searching i,e searching patterns like a 4 inch flash prom dress fly vs a closer fly 1 inch buggers,,,, On the canadian side the runs are smaller. There's few times im knowingly sitting on a pool of fish outside of the spring, In such cases would you still go small? Also what tips you off to sit on pool a little more and hit with small patterns vs blasting through looking for that player besides experience

Thanks for watching the video, What Guides me in choosing color and fly size is a lot to do with experience for that particular piece of water. As a general rule of thumb, the dirtier and higher the water flow, the bigger the fly and bryter the color. As for sitting on the pool, it depends on how much life I observed. Also one of the hardest lessons I've learned with tributary fishing, is too know when to leave Fish to find fish. They don't want to play, you might as well taking toys and go somewhere else. Hopefully this answers a couple of questions.
