This is an easy to tie and sharp looking salmon and steelhead wet fly. The materials are easy to obtain (you may already have what you need to tie this fly at the bench). The added benefit is this pattern is quite effective and you can modify it to meet your immediate needs. Good luck with this fly pattern. Thank you for watching and please leave a comment! 2025 Winter Fly Tying Series: Dubbing Mixing for the Flash Nymph
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.21 день назад
In a previous video, we demonstrated how to tie the flashback nymph. In this this one, we share some tips on how to make the dubbing for the fly - it's more about tying techniques and tips, than the fly itself. Hope you find it helpful. As always, please leave a comment and hit the like button!
2025 Winter Fly Tying Series: Steelhead Pheasant Tail

This fly patter has occupied a spot in my box for a long time. To do that, it means the pattern has proven to be effective over the years. It is not a complicated one to tie and the material list is quite short. Simply put, it's easy to tie and effective. Enjoy! 2025 Winter Fly Tying Series: Jay's Flashback Stonefly
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.Месяц назад
This is the start of a series of winter fly tying videos and we thought we'd kick it off with one of my favorites - the flashback stone (which is a very effective pattern for winter steelhead on off the Great Lake tributaries). Our fly tying videos have not traditionally done well in terms of viewership so help us out by checking it out. Also, leave a comment on other patterns you'd like to see...
Selecting Sink Tips for Swinging Flies
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
I often get asked how do I select my sink tips and do my best to address that question in this video. The key to selecting sink tips is matching it to water flow / speed and depth. On the surface, this sounds very complicated but with both experience and practice, you'll find it's easier than it looks. Hope you find this video helpful!
Lost River Fishing - December Fishing Report (Week 3)
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.Месяц назад
As winter approaches, the fishing reports will slow down and we'll start doing more tying videos. When it comes to fishing conditions on the Salmon River, with the weather, we're seeing higher flows which should help push some fish in.

It's time for another fishing update. The grind continues but keep in mind that condition can and do change quickly. The salmon are still trickling in but we're starting to move into the start of the fall / winter steelhead season. Never know when some chrome will show up!
Salmon River Fishing Report - Mid October
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
It's been a busy few weeks on the river and the salmon continue to trickling in - we are overdue for a run of fish but only mother nature knows. With the shift in weather over the last couple days, we could see that change (conditions do and can do so quickly). The good news is that we are starting to see some steelhead show up.

I heard about you from a guy on the water and funny enough I got some of these flies from a different guy i worked with that said you were killing it with these
Thanks for the super video and the tying tips!!!
Wow, great demonstration, Jay! Always appreciate your tips!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for another great video Jay.
Glad you enjoyed it
I never meet Mark, but heard he was a character and creator of the carpet fly. I found places on amazon to buy small skeens of yarn and hope to crank out a few of his creation. Ill never go thru 7 big skeins of all that yarn.
No doubt he was a character, And a dear friend
Another great video with tying tips. Thanks. I thin Sally's Hard as Nails with regular lacquer thinner from Lowes. I don't know if it will thin other nail polishes.
it will work
Thanks
Welcome
Awesome tying session Jay, great tips too. Love the use of the bump or shoulder to prop up the hackle. I tie my soft hackle wets like that. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed the video and the tips!
Another great fly and thank you for spending some time to review the materials before tying the fly. Most often I end up tying with materials on hand. Reviewing the materials gives me a better chance to match up my material to be hopefully close enough. Take Care
Thanks for watching!
Another stellar performance. Thanks Jay.
Thanks again!
Keep the tying vids coming buddy there GREAT 🎉
Thanks, will do!
Great tieing tips!!! The sr should be firing up after the rain and warm weather that they're getting.
we will need to see what on the river, a lot of sown
@JayPeckGuidesLostRiversFishing it was some hellacious hiking up there today and 2 weeks ago when I was up there last. Lots of snow for sure.
We used that fly a number of times great results when we need to class it up!
That is a great fly
I like green butts and I cannot lie!!! Except when they have lumpy butt disease 😅
This is a amazing fly!!!! You been slamming steelies?
And that's cool, But picking away at it
I'm really enjoying your videos. Keep them coming.
Glad you like them!
Always a pleasure to watch how you tie your flies. If I may, if you use Danville 6/0 thread it lies flat. Bill Hunter once told me to then use your dubbing needle and rub the head and the thread will further flatten. There after you can apply what ever head finish you prefer. The heads will have a nice appearance. It is very interesting to me that you deliberately provide "shoulders" to have your hackle stick out. You see that style of tie in West coast steelhead flies. I tie Atlantic salmon flies and find just the opposite. I slim profile seems to work far better. Then again it is a fish and there isn't much of a brain there. They are apt to do things that don't make sense to us. Though many Canadians will tell you that thin black flies imitate elvers which are returning to the salmon rivers.
Him phone that true, Canadien Salmon rivers
Love the fly video. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Enjoy your tying style and tying tips. Keep posing tying vids. Thanks
You bet, more videos on the way!
Tied one a size 6 stonefly hook...i forgot the antenna lol.
Done that myself
Hey Jay...i dont uave many scud hooks in size 6, but have hundreds in tmc 200 for stoneflies. I assume they would work. Im always leary about changing ingredients on tested and proven flies.
I also have 1000 mustad c49s size 6 as well and assume they would wotk. I'm trying to use up my inventory.
those books will work just fine
They will work
Yes, another great tie, with tips. Thanks!
you are Welcome
Great pattern and the various colors are great. Do you have the material recipe or did I miss it.
i go over the materials in the beginning of the video
Great video! I enjoy wayching them! One question, i noticed you a blood knot to connect your leader sections. I thought i heard you say in another video, you only use double uni knots, i may have misunderstood and in this video you used it to connect your leader to tippet?
How use blood not to build the leader , The double uni knot to connect the tippet
@JayPeckGuidesLostRiversFishing Thank you, Jay!
Keep making the fly tying videos. Thanks Jay.
You bet
Some great tying tips in this video Jay !
Glad you liked it!
Great video!! Your videos are very easy to follow!! Keep them coming!
Thanks for the kind words!
Great medium-sized steelhead wets Jay! As an old steelheader (over 70) I've been thinking about flies that have worked for me over a lifetime. Despite my interest in having intruders and large sized flies being a remedy for consistent success, looking back 50 years finds size 4 and 6 traditional west coast patterns being far more productive, almost 25 to 1. Fall favorites, polar shrimp, skunks, etc...I think your great take on modern steelhead wets will take over my fascination with intruders😂.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, these wets will catch fish!
Thanks for another great fly pattern. What size range do you tie and do you ever add weight to the fly? Take Care
Then gently tie them From size 6 to Size 1, I do not and wait to these flies
@@JayPeckGuidesLostRiversFishing Thanks for the info. This fly reminds me of my all time favorite "Old School" wet fly..... The Carey Special, size 6 to 10 - unweighted, which is my go to fly for smallmouth bass in small streams or shallow summer flows. This fly was taught to me by my father over 50 years ago. Perhaps you know of this fly and can share it with others who follow your tutorials. Take Care
That was great, Jay! What are the largest/smallest you've caught with on this pattern? I'm glad you showed the hackle technique: I've only tide softs with partridge up until now.
The size range Range for those patterns are from 8 to 2
Tie the hackle in by the tip and fold. It ties in easy peasy, always flows backwards. My little hint for the day.
That’s a great tip, thanks!
Awesome fly.
Thanks 👍
Thank you so much for doing these.
My pleasure!
Great hackle winding tips! Thanks
You bet!
Nice tip on keeping your hackles from twisting. I will definitely be using that from now on. Best tip of the year….. so far.
Glad you found it useful!
Nice pattern! Thanks for the “hackle pinch” trick!!
Glad you like the hackle pinch trick!
Thanks Jay! Keep the tying videos coming. I think they're great and your tying tips are very helpful.
You are very welcome!
Hey Jay still glad to see the shop still open. Is Carl still with us, I've visited the shop for close to 50 years now and always enjoyed his knowledge of rods reels and tying tips, not mention the awesome standard dry flies he had tied up. Still have one of his original wing burned bwo.
we lost Carl a year ago last November,
Awesome video! Thanks Jay!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for sharing your patterns…I noticed in other videos that you have a Norvise, I would love to see how you use it.
I’ll make sure to feature it in an upcoming video!
Thanks, Jay...always like your fly tying videos! I guess you are swinging these wets on a spey with MOW tips?
Yes, that is correct!
Love the fly tying videos! Keep tying Jay! See you soon on the river
I hope to see you on the river too!
Beautiful wets Jay. Love the colors too. Thanks.
Thanks 👍
Nice tie, Jay. Enjoying the tying videos.
Glad you like them!
Very nice!
Thanks!
Beautiful flies. Can wait to swing them in front of some steelhead this spring. THANKS!!
Good luck!
Like the videos. I'm a steady viewer. I have moved to pulaski ( village) just above DSR. I watch vids and fished here on and off since about 1998. Anyway just saying hi. And as far as fly comments. Have u seen the fairly new both MFC and the FNF squirmy material. U can get it tied with out any worry about slicing the thread.
Thanks for letting me know about this material.
In my 4 years of swinging flies I have had pulls on a big intruder, say, and then waited 10 minutes and throw back a small wet fly and got a solid take. This is what they say to do. It works.....sometimes
That it does
Thanks for another great video!! Appreciate your dedication and hard work!!!
My pleasure!
Going to tye some of this the hook 2151 what size do you recommend
I generally use, Size 4 and 2
