Thanks Steve! Minnelli's take on "Hollywood on the Tiber" is one of the greatest of his many sensational melodramas: from David Raksin's beautiful main title music right up to its fantastic finale's dose of autoerotica; I think I like it even more than THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. There's a glorious blu-ray from Warner Archives and a magnificent stereophonic soundtrack CD from Film Score Monthly for those that can't get enough of this CinemaScope classic. Thank you, Steve, for doing these reviews. They are so entertaining during these crazy times. I wonder if you could do your fans a favor? Could you do a review of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton? This movie is a bit of a gay cult classic-at least with those of us who are, [cough!], from the older group? Thank you so much, Steve.
It's on my "to do" list. Thank you so much for the lovely compliment. You made my day! I hope you are having a comfortable summer and avoidung the heat. Best Wishes and many thanks for watching! Best Always; Steve
Nice review! I am new fan of your channel. Have you thought of doing Nicholas & Alexandra (1971)? N&A is the last of the big scale 1960's epics produced by Sam Speigel. The score by Richard Rodney Bennett is spectacular (Oscar nominated). The cast alone is worth a revisit- Michael Jayston, Janet Suzman, Tom Baker, Harry Andrews, Timothy West, Jack Hawkins, Sir Michael Redgrave, Eric Porter, Michael Bryant, Irene Worth, John Wood, Ian Holm, Brian Cox, Julian Glover, AND Lord Laurence Olivier!
This sounds like a fantastic view! What do you think about the movie ‘The Arrangement’ the Douglas/Kerr/Dunaway movie? He was pretty washed up as a character there too!
I haven't seen that one enough to comment. Saw it years ago when it first came out. Kirk was great at playting dynamic characters who hit bottom and had to crawl their way up and out.
Also, this movie kinda became a prophecy for Minnelli's own career didn't it? Vincente and Liza's "A Matter of Time" would wind up in crisis, executives skimped on the budget, the casting was in chaos, they filmed in Cinecitta and Vince was getting old and hard to get his ideas across to Italians, and eventually the movie bombed and he never directed another movie.
He had similar problems with all the films he made after "Gigi". This one was yanked out of his hands and re-edited, as was " Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" right after. They had a big turn around at MGM at this time and the new heads in the front office decided they wanted only family fair. However, even in the films that werent as successful, there is always something gorgeous to see in every Minnelli film. Sometime, when you have a moment, go to RUclips and watch his Oscar accetance speech where he ...seemingly unwittingly...keeps giving the finger to the establishment throughout. It's hilarious and you know was no accident. Happy Summer! Steve
Lee Grant is a fabulius New York city based actress who camne from the stage to Hollywood, recfreating her original role in 'Detective Story" that she'd done on Broadway. She won the Cannes Film festival Best Acrress Award for Detective Story as well as an oscar nomibnatin for "Best Supporting Actress" , she lost to Kim Hunter for "A Streetcar named Desire". She was then Black Listed during the McCarthy Era witch hunts of the '60's and din't make a comeback until she won an Emmy in the mid-60's for the TV version of Peyton Place. She then got back into movies with " valley Of The Dolls" and " In The Heat Of The Night" and subsequently earned another three Oscar nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for " Shampoo" as well as a Best Documentary Oscar. She is now 94 and lives in New York. I've talked wih her on the street occasinally and she 's still very sharpe and outspioken. Her Memoir " I Said Yes to Everything" is one of the best showbiz autobiographies. Love Lee Grant.
Hey Steve, I’m trying to remember the name of the movie about a Jewish man who was ashamed of being Jewish. I thought the actor was Gregory Peck. I remember that his name was Greene, but he shortened it as he didn’t want people to know he was Jewish and I think his real name was Greenbaum. It wasn’t Gentleman’s agreement, as that story is in reverse and I’m unsure if the actor was Gregory Peck. I would love it if you could give me the name of that movie. Thanks. 😃😉👍

The clash between Claire Trevor's Clara and E.G.Robinson's Maurice Kruger is deliciously trashy. One minute she's clucking and he's nonchalantly brushing her repeated phrases off and pointing out misused words, another minute she's still cluckling and HE's cussing up storm, and immediately after this she tries to overdose on sleeping pills to kill herself and his reaction? "We'll just have to have your stomach pumped again; you know how sick that makes me", so she's done this to a routine! He clearly cares enough about her to keep her from the worst of breakdowns, but doesn't care enough to stop his affairs. EVEN BETTER, later when they're sleeping and he's suddenly dreading his future, and she cuddles him and gives her googly sweet talks as if he were her baby child! This whole dynamic where they cannot just talk facts to each other anymore is SO sick and I love it.
Me too. Although I had the feeling that some of Claire's best scenes ended up on the cuttingroom floor. The studio took the film away from Minnelli and edited/butchered it...according to him. Thanks for watching.

Enjoy! Perfect viewing for a sultry, summer night! Steve
Loved this video. Are you on audea? most of my audio is consumed there and would appreciate the audio version of your content on that platform
Thanks Steve. I'm late to this but nonetheless wonderful as always. You're the best. 😃
Never too late! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Hamilton 's idea of being tough is using paper napkins!
With his teeth! LOL! Thanks for watching! Steve
Its a fabulous looking movie but I do wish we could see the Minelli cut
Another one with precious, lost footage. Among many! Steve
Love this. Dr. Zeus film podcast
So glad! Thanks for watching! Steve
YES!
Hooray! Steve
Speaking of towns Kirk Douglas was in - 'Town Without Pity' is devastating.
Yes, he wasn't afarid to tackle films on ugly topics.
The car scene, Maserati I think, is fabulous. Cyd is too much. Love the film.
She acts like she dances. Lots of sugestive posing and emphatic movements. Steve
I'll add it to my "To Do" list. Thanks so much!
I saw this the last time it was on TCM!
Thanks for watching! Steve
Steve
3rd...Thank you Steve ...always enjoy these--- Hello Johnny! Sharing on Reddit under GAY
whats the behind the story story of when Kirk Douglas got very handsy with a YOUNG / mid teens 16-17 Natalie Wood?
I just watch detective story!
Who is Lee Grant, I was blown away with her acting!
@Steve Hayes have you done a review about "Detective story."
@@brankastupar7101 No, but it's on my list. It's pretty conroversial just now.
Thanks. 😃😉👍
It's "Gentlemen's Agreement". You were right the first time. Happy Summer and thanks for watching! Steve.
Oh, yeah- this is a good one.
I think so! Glad you like it. Steve
Hi Steve, by any chance do you have a Patreon. I see other RUclipsrs do or they have one where one could buy them a "cup of coffee". You are so great, I have been binge-watching your reviews
You are too sweet! No, I don't, but I so appreciate the offer and am just delighted that you like TOQ Old Queen at the Movies! Thank yo so much and I hope you subscribe so that I can bring you another episode and classic film every month! Happy Holidays! Best; Steve
Leslie Uggams ❤️
The BEST!
Love her in the show empire as Terrance Howard mother
@@angelaholmes8888 Such an incredible talent and a lovely person to work with! I can't sing her prasies highly enough...nor can I sing nearly as well. LOL! Thanks for watching! Steve
You should review 20 Million Miles to Earth. There is lovely scene with these guys in speedos. It happens so damn quick, I wanted that to be the whole movie. Great movie tho
All this and Harryhausen too! Thanks for the recomendation. Hold onto your speedo and Happy August! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I’ll hold on tight 🩲
Great impersonations.
Thank you! You made my day! Steve
Steve doing Claire Trevor is nagging at me now, yet somehow I want more, more, more!
As David Cassidy once sang; " It think I love you, so what am I so afraid of? I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love there is no cure for!" LOL! Thanks so mcuh! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Poor David, the ultimate teen heartthrob, may he R.I.P. I'm working on a noir video project and I plan on watching "Key Largo" next for clips, with Trevor in the ultimate Oscar-bait scene, IMO (and she nails it, of course). Loved your video for that one, as well!
@@slc2466 That sounds like fun! Good luck and VIVA CLAIRE! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I did finish my noir project and uploaded it- Claire made the cut twice, and of course Linda Darnell in "Fallen Angel" is also in there a couple times, among many, many others.
@@slc2466 CONGRATULATIONS!!! You win the "Hazel Brooks, Janis Carter, Rose Hobart and Audrey Totter Award " from the Tired Old Queen at the Movies in recognition of your reccognition of the contributions made by Femme Fatales in Film Noir! ...HOORAY! Now, relax, sit back, enjoy the rest of the summer and watch something soothing, like "No Way To Treat A Lady". LOL! Best; Steve
💙💙
Thanks, Sweetie!
Enjoyable review. Another you might like - "Back Street" with Suzy Hayward, John Gavin and a very b---chy Vera Miles in a maniacal car scene..
I did it already! Check with my back episodes. Love it!
Am I the only one who doesn't think Kirk Douglas was that great of an actor?
Nothing wrong with that. To each his own. Thanks for watching! Happy Summer! Steve
It seems to me that Claire Trevor got revenge on Edward G. Robinson for how he treated her in Key Largo.
You're probably right. I love how he underplays to her throughout. Steve
you if your a fan of old classics yo should watch turner classic movies they show lots and have you even heard of it and its hosts
I'VE HEARD OF IT, I'M A FAN OF IT AND I'VE EVEN BEEN ON IT! HOORAY FOR TCM! HAPPY LABOR DAY AND THANKS FOR WATCHING! STEVE
Hey could you review good the bad and the ugly or a for a few dollars more
I'll put them on my "to do" list! Thanks for watching and for the suggestions! Best; Steve
Not familiar with this film. I will have to check it out.
It's alot of fun on a summer night! Enjoy! Steve
How about the review on a John Garfield film? Not a fan of Kirk Douglas.
I've got a few on my "To Do" list! Thanks for watching! Steve
Unfortunately, though well made, it's rather shallow compared to The Bad and the Beautiful.
Absolutely, but alot of fun , none the less. Steve
OMG... this was a TERRIBLE movie. You're review is ten times better. I love your Kirk Douglas. LOL. I can only think of one movie I liked set in modern Italy and that's 'Summertime'. I don't know why but I don't find it attractive. I love Italian actresses. Especially Anna Magnani
You need to go there. Don't think twice, book your tickets and fly to Rome. The place is so romantic it will knock your socks off...just sayin'. Thanks for watching! Steve
