In my early 20s I once dropped my lighter in a friend's bedroom it went under his bed and I found a sock so said as a joke is this your "fun sock" he went red and very defensive telling me to STFU.
Just cobbled together my own mini set, as you say purely for making hot drinks, pots of noodles, soup, etc. I already have a Trangia burner, lighter, bit of J Cloth, small windbreak, teaspoon big enough for the noodles and an enamel mug. Just need the little pot stand thingy (£4.95) and an old sock! Thanks for the idea Paul, love my new mini stove set!
After watching this video the other week, it finally got me motivated to get my self a little setup like the one in this video and I must say I wish I done it sooner, makes the outdoors even more enjoyable especially not having to haul around hot and cold water, it so compact just makes it all effortless, keep up the good work Paul 👍🏻
Toaks 700, home made capillary double wall pop can meths/ bioethanol burner, stormin cone. Put your hand inside the sock then you can leave the orange pot grabber at home. Excellent ideas in your vid esp. the leaves tip. Thanks
I’m a Stanley cook pot with Fancy feast stove user. I keep it in the Condor water bottle style cylindrical pouch. Along with fuel, spoon, and beverages etc. one drawback is I have to carry water in a separate container. So for short outings it’s a little bulky, your video has given me a fresh idea. I made a windshield out of a pop can. And I use a ferocerium rod and striker and carry a mini bic as back up.
There's something just right about stopping and making a brew on a stove, sitting back and pondering. Nice little set up. Not a big fan of alcohol stoves but on the back of this vid may give it a go for day trips.
Vivaro :- Google DIY alcohol soda can stoves...might give you some ideas for a boring covid-19 afternoon. I've made several and given a few away (great for bug-out bags). Some models require a pot stand & others don't. The easiest is the "fancy feast stove"

One tip for alcohol burners. Add a few drops around the pilot holes when you are filling it up. It allows for a much easier ignition without having to aim right in the centre.
The Keith joke and the single lads sock bit had me laugh out loud. My family said what are you laughing at dad. I replied "I'm watching a man make a brew" They now think I'm bonkers.
Making a brew is such a pleasure on a walk, better than bringing a flask which I have been doing for a while now. Totally inspired to go back to my little pleasure, bringing my titanium cup, 650, and Trangia along together with the little foldable stand. Thanks Paul for sharing 😃
Absolutely loved your outing.. We can really thankful to God for our hikes and beautiful outdoors now after a long lockdown.. I liked your smaller cook kit.. Mine happens to be Toaks 500 ml light..fits in pocket and the only real difference of yours and mine is that it holds two cups and it needs no refill for second boil.. Thanks for the beautiful escape in these hard times...
Thought the video was going to get very lively for a moment when you rubbed alcohol hand gel on your hands and then waved it around near the stove! 😄 Good vid, as always, thanks!
My mini brew kit is 500ml titanium pot, toaks titanium siphon stove, diy mesh pot stand, modified titanium foil wind shield, same mini gripper as Paul’s a 60ml nalgene fuel bottle and a cut down chop stick for stirring! All fits in the pot, in the mesh bag that came with the pot and in me pocket.
Some of these companies are incredibly good and selling the outdoor enthusiast something that IKEA sells for 50p for a lot more. Those little grippers as an example. I’ve never thought of using them for camp cooking but I will now : )
I'm a recent subscriber to youre channel Paul. And I want to tell how much I appreciate your hard work involve in creating these wonderful videos. Please keep it up as you and many others like Ta outdoors have inspired my love for Wilding camping. Which I enjoyed in my earlier years.... many thanks Paul 😊 🙏
I'm annoyed by how many places explicitly forbid that. Lots of places I'm allowed to hunt in this pretty rural town, nowhere I'm allowed to cook my lunch.
I have a Stanley cook pot with a couple of different alcohol stoves and the Pocket Rocket. I made a wind screen with the roasting pan I found in the garage. I also watched your video on the camp cozy and now that we are in quarantine I pulled out the roll of reflectix (spelling?) that I purchased this winter and watched the video again and made four of them!
Another great video. I bought the Waterfly bag (the slightly bigger one, with two bottle holders) last year, when i was doing an ultra walk and wanted to keep the weight down. They are great waist bags for a very reasonable price. You're lucky to have some great walking and wonderful views so close to home
Some comments saying to take a flask ?? Missing the point!! lighting a small stove using a pot and making a hot drink in the outdoors is a mindful calming experience . Just don’t do what I did and sit back on a rock and fall backwards onto my red hot cup resulting in a burn on my arse 😩😩 great vid hope your well 👍👍
Few year ago I made same size set. Steel cup, lid , diy wire stand and "trangia" which is less powerful copy and fit fine. Now is tita set coming with two cup.
great video. i use a small lixada twig stove.. fits where your windshield fits.. teabags sugar and powdered milk fits where your stove and fuel were in cup. personal choice of course.Derek
Hi paul love your videos I was one told buy an ex fireman that when testing the stove you should use that back of your hand. This is because your natural instinct is to for some reason is to close your hand and if you you use then back of your hand you will close it away from the flame instead of into it. Something I found useful 😀
My brew kit is a Snow Peak 450 titanium mug, aftermarket titanium lid, Trangia burner, cross stand and a Vargo ultralight windshield. I’ve got a folding Alpkit titanium foon (yes foon!) and a 200ml Sigg aluminium fuel bottle. The whole set, full of fuel weighs 500g and takes up no space at all in my bike saddlebag or rucksack.
I have just bought the Urberg rogen power stove. It comes at 600 grams, 2200w, looks like the jetboil but much cheaper. 40 Euro. I tested and cooked 3dl of water like you did and it took 1min 20 sec. Great videos btw.
Great video paul as usual ! the sock remark made me chuckle. that little cook pot is great if your needing something small and compact. Loved how you made a wind break out of a roasting tin. Adapt and overcome
Fun vid. Thx. My kit is an old optimus stove-- white gas-- and a Vietnam era GI canteen cup. I don't like alcohol burners. Tried them, but as I don't eat dehyd food, they are pointless for my adventures. And dangerous, when hunting/fishing camping on my boat.
Nice video. I love seeing minimalist Hiking kit. I also use a 350ml cup, but the stove is and have an MBDC Gnome Turbo stove. I can fit the stove with pot stand inside a 10oz insulated mug and both fit in the 350ml mug. I had not considered adding the pot stand but will have to.
This caught my eye imeadiately...l like to put my supplies in my pocket, rather than using "bumbags" or backpacks. Up to now l've been using an empty coconut oil tin, a homemade soda can stove, but the idea is great. I will go out and buy one of those collapsible cups. Thanks for a great video.
Great video. Liking the format. Keep up the good work. I got 2x Trangria, a smaller one and a bigger one. Just got 2x Toaks titanium cups, one 375 ML and a 650 ML and those pair nicely with a MSR Pocket Rocket :)
Brilliant Paul. A nice way to spend the hour. Lovely scenery you lucky begger. 😃 Thanks for the upload Paul from my concrete jungle in North West England. Always a pleasure to watch. 👍 ⛺
Oh so nice to look at you playing around like a child. That is the way life should be. Looking your videos makes me happy. I at once want to do it like you. Bye till next Time👍👍😻😻😻
I made a candle stove using an old tin. Four candles in a sweets tin with a metal cross on top. Do you think a titanium cup will get hot enough to boil water on 4 tealights?
Okay since you asked Paul, my brewkit is not really lightweight but it's reliable, efficient and bombproof: - Dutch Army stainless steel canteen cup & 1l water bottle, nested; I have ordered a canteen cup lid but still use my old solution which is inner pan from a German Army mess kit, it's aluminium but as well as being used as a lid I can cook in it too, or boil water if cooking in the canteen cup. Think when the canteen cup lid comes I'm still going to carry the German mess kit pan. - Trangia burner - as used by Swedish Army - Folding Swedish cup (green of course) also as used by Swedish Army - Stainless folding spork - Lixada pocket stove as windshield / pot stand, plus I can burn twigs in it if I run out of meths, or just prefer to do so - Victorinox camper knife - Small firesteel to light Trangia, I always carry a lighter too but as I'm more prepper/bushcraft/survival orientated I go by the adage ''one is none, two are one'' All in a British Army S10 respirator case, which I attach to the handlebars of my mountain bike, there's loads of room to spare, so I pack my Bundeswehr Flecktarn goretex and/or poncho. Always carry some paracord too, so the 5 C's (container, combustion, cordage, cutting tool & cover) are covered. It isn't light but most of the stuff is made in countries like UK, Germany, NL, Switzerland, Sweden so it's good quality; it's tried and tested old-school kit, and it's virtually indestructible.
Hi Paul, My brew kit is a French army mug and a BCB multi fuel burner, three gel pots fit inside it when folded up and the burner has a built in windshield, the fuel doubles up as hand gel.
I notice you get a very clean burn, is that the bio ethanol or the stove? I used a Trangia for many years... since the 80s but always had trouble with sooting up and the mess you get into if you forget to clean it off your pot. Even tried the adding water advice going round at the time but that was hit and miss. Also how does the titanium burner compare to the trangia and will it fit the trangia stove? Sorry for the barrage of questions.
It will do the job if you just want a brew or a dehydrated meal. I would measure the fuel for a certain amount to boil for each meal and then multiply by how many boils per trip.
Brilliant Paul, I’v never thought of just putting my pot in my pocket, I’v always just brought a small bag, that way I put some more clothes and stuff in etc. My cook kit consists of a pocket rocket 2, My ti 650, GSI pot grippers. And if I need it, the Trangia frying pan. 👍🏻 I only really boil water though, ( saves washing up ) 👍🏻
The best dress socks I ever had were from Harrods, until one went missing. The next time I was in London, I went there to see if they had more of that style, but no joy. If they did, I would have bought the lot.
As soon as I saw the blue on the burner I knew it was an Evernew (or copy). Great little stove. I use the Trangia simmer ring with mine. I need to get a smaller pot: I’ve got a Vargo 1.3l one. If you want to use the Evernew stove with a windshield/ burner stand designed for the Trangia you need to add a little ring around the stove: it is just fractionally narrower than the Trangia and can slip if you’re not careful. I use a ring made from rolled up foil.
@11:41 Bloody hell Paul! Looks like your cook system left a decent burn mark on that bench... 😂 Love your work fella; you've inspired me to head out with a cuppa on my walks.
Paul, it’s about time you got yourself a jet lighter for lighting alcohol stoves. I have a Petromax and also a Soto. Both do the job far better than a normal lighter. The Soto has a lanyard loop so you shouldn’t loose it and both can be refilled, saving the environment a bit.
Well you learn something new every day eh. I have a trangia alcohol burner, & I stopped using it because it burns up the fuel to quickly. It never occurred to me that you can put your small cup or pot right on top. Thanks for that little lesson.
All people who say alcohol is somehow dangerous as a trekking fuel. What amount one puts in a burner is just minimal. I am certainly against burners like Toaks siphon used with a "chicken wire" net circle, or those fancee feast stoves without any proper stand. The Evernew burner or its copies, is a much more solid, and it won't tip easy. Before that happens the pot will tip from the stove. Paul did make a "mistake" though in that he chose to cook something in such a small mug. When something starts to boil and steam, it can be a touch and go grabbing a mug with such handles with a pot grabber. And the Evernew burner/copy can develop from the upper holes in my experience some sticky stuff between the pot and burner contact. Anyways the amount if spilled would have not been a lot and otherwise a very nice video Paul. I liked it thank you :) I myself have a Toaks 118mm bowl, 550ml, that I'm considering also using with my chinese Evernew copy burner. It would not be used to cook any, just to boil water. Just measure something like 15 ml of fuel inside, and if needed let it burn through before any pot removing and stuff. Certainly not playing with the steam if the windscreen prevents easy removal.
Hi Paul love your videos I have something very similar only mine is personalized for someone called Tomshco titanium I have a Tomshco titanium folding spork which fits inside the spirit burner the same as yours with a Clipper lighter which fits inside the 450 ml mug which also sits inside the 2ed 750 ml mug I then wrap my homemade tin foil windshield around that and I keep it in a small mesh bag the whole lot weighs 400g not including fuel and I can split them if I want to absolutely love it heats up quickly and cools down quickly
I use the slightly bigger lixada 750ml cup with a 100g colman gas can and soto amicus, the gas can fits perfectly inside leaving enough room for the stove head on top with the lid then all held together with the drawstring bag the cup comes in. Roughly £60 in total
Paul, hope your doing well. I have a similar set up, but my stove is different, I use the TOAKS titanium siphon stove and a 450 ml cup. I also use the toaks pot support with it. Nice video bro keep em coming!
I use pretty similar myself: Toaks cup, with toaks twig stove nested inside and a Trangia stove that I have in case its too wet for twigs. The twig stove is a bit small for its intended purpose, but it doubles as wind shield for the Trangia so I am happy with it.
I go ‘stoving’ a lot when I’m out cycling. Kit of choice at the moment an ancient Optimus 80 petrol stove (burns fierce!) and an Alpkit titanium pot or two! 👍🏻
Nice share .. thanks 👍😊. One of my (Retro) Brew Kits .. have quite a few variations thereof 😊. * Esbit Folding Military Stove. I use Alcohol Fuel Gel stored in a little Plastic Medicine Bottle. Here in Switzerland, easier to source and cheaper than Esbit Tabs. Gel Burners are a set of 3 Metal Screw Top Jar Lids. Each stores inside the other and gives me different levels of Heat. Together with 'esatz' wind shields and other odds and sods, the lot fits very nicely into a Webbing Military Compass Pouch. * Swiss Military M84 Water Bottle with Aluminium Cup. I fashioned a Lid out of a Herring Tin Bottom and a Carrier from Nylon Strapping. * Flame Source .. Bic / Matches / Fire Steel / Whatever. This Set using the Gel Fuel is very unobtrusive and safe to use .. almost anywhere .. rural and urban. I have also, with a little IKEA Egg Pan, an additional folding wire Pot Stand and Dixies acting as a 'Bain Marie' to keep the already cooked Scoff warm, used the above-mentioned to cook up a Full English Breakfast. Take care .. stay safe ..
Paul Great simple video. I've recent started taking a setup similar to yours. The only difference is I love an Espresso shot (or two) and take the Minipresso NS with me which produces a really good shot and has a combined cup. It almost seems like a naughty treat sitting in the middle of nowhere drinking a good coffee. To stop stuff rattling inside the tin I use small drawing string mesh bags (Amazon Black CellPhone Nylon Mesh Drawstring Pouch) they are light weigh and cheap as chips and dry quickly.
Great video as alway and I loved the DIY wind shield 👌. Can you think about doing a cold soaking video please. Thanks and looking forward to your next video 😊

Sounds great! nice setup there
I didn’t know that you don’t need the pot support for the titanium stove. Well I learned another one from your fantastic videos.
I'm just trying to work out why a trangia needs pot supports and this one doesn't. Is it the fact there's two rows of flame holes?
I’m a Stanley cook pot with Fancy feast stove user. I keep it in the Condor water bottle style cylindrical pouch. Along with fuel, spoon, and beverages etc. one drawback is I have to carry water in a separate container. So for short outings it’s a little bulky, your video has given me a fresh idea. Bioethanol

I get virtually no soot with bio ethanol. Thanks for watching
Nice little setup
Cheers. Thanks for watching.
Nice. How come you dont need pot supports. Where did you get the ones for the trangia?
There's a link in the description of the video buddy
Amazing video Paul. Quick question would you recommend this set up for a 5 days trip? If so how many ml of fuel do i need . Should i buy a gas stove?
It will do the job if you just want a brew or a dehydrated meal. I would measure the fuel for a certain amount to boil for each meal and then multiply by how many boils per trip.
@@PaulMessner thanks a lot for your help
Thanks for the video Paul, could you tell me if your trousers are waterproof, many thanks.
No they aren't but they do dry extremely quickly
I find your videos very informative and the places look lovely
Glad you like them!
Some good little tips for minimalist cooking thanks for that.
Watching all of your videos really makes me considering trying the alcohol stove again mate. Cheers.
👍🏻 I only really boil water though, ( saves washing up ) 👍🏻
It's a nifty little setup. I like it.
Hi Paul what size is the other fuel bottle you use in this set up
I’m not sure 125ml maybe.
Thanks Paul great video and nice wee set up got one myself now
Good idea and never really thought of it tbh - generally have a 500ml or litre flask of hot water or fruit tea. Must find my trangia!
You should! I love my trangia
Hi Paul, is there any way to extinguish that stove or does it need to burn out?
You can snuff the flame out. Either make a small cap or buy the trangia simmer ring for a few ££. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for another great video. Some nice, practical ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
The best dress socks I ever had were from Harrods, until one went missing. The next time I was in London, I went there to see if they had more of that style, but no joy. If they did, I would have bought the lot.
Those socks sound too good for a pot sack Harold
As soon as I saw the blue on the burner I knew it was an Evernew (or copy). Great little stove. I use the Trangia simmer ring with mine. I need to get a smaller pot: I’ve got a Vargo 1.3l one.
If you want to use the Evernew stove with a windshield/ burner stand designed for the Trangia you need to add a little ring around the stove: it is just fractionally narrower than the Trangia and can slip if you’re not careful. I use a ring made from rolled up foil.
Thanks for the info! Cheers buddy
Really enjoying you videos myself and young son have been doing some day trips..very inspired thanks and keep up the great work
good stuff paul.great micro set up for a decent walk with brew stop or stops on route. I have similar. stay safe mate.
It's a nifty little setup. I like it.
Look after yourself buddy
Thanks Paul. Appreciate the lockdown video. Stay safe you and the fam👍
Thanks 👍
I liked it thank you :)
I myself have a Toaks 118mm bowl, 550ml, that I'm considering also using with my chinese Evernew copy burner. It would not be used to cook any, just to boil water. Just measure something like 15 ml of fuel inside, and if needed let it burn through before any pot removing and stuff. Certainly not playing with the steam if the windscreen prevents easy removal.
Great channel. Love your informative content. Where did you get your collapsible mug and small, clear fuel bottles please👍
Nice set up Kevin. I need to start my own brand so i can more personalised kit that fits me.
Sounds great! You have a nice setup there. Thanks for watching.
* Flame Source .. Bic / Matches / Fire Steel / Whatever.
Looks like you have it covered from all angles. Nice setup.
@@PaulMessner 👍😊
Paul Great simple video. I've recent started taking a setup similar to yours. The only difference is I love an Espresso shot (or two) and take the Minipresso NS with me which produces a really good shot and has a combined cup. It almost seems like a naughty treat sitting in the middle of nowhere drinking a good coffee. To stop stuff rattling inside the tin I use small drawing string mesh bags (Amazon Black CellPhone Nylon Mesh Drawstring Pouch) they are light weigh and cheap as chips and dry quickly.
Hi Paul good vid 👍currently using trangia with lixada hinged fire box.like yourself goes in bum bag and for less then £25 wot more does one need..
Exactly. If it does the job at the right price....winner
Great video as alway and I loved the DIY wind shield 👌. Can you think about doing a cold soaking video please. Thanks and looking forward to your next video 😊
Thanks for the idea! Not sure cold soaking is for me though.
Hello Paul and thanks for your great videos. Do you have a bit of soot with the alcool or do you use a particular fuel? Cheers. JL
