There was a fire onboard a ship just like this last night in Port Newark, NJ… killed two FireFighters and injured several more when they got trapped between cars and decks. I’m curious as hell how a car just self-combusts causing an inferno that lasts for 24 hours? Cool video though for sure! These vessels are incredible (but clearly have safety hazards that we likely need to address). From reports by Newark Fire Department some of the issues with fighting the fire last night was lack of adequate water suppression (Firefighters had to utilize onboard ship fire equipment) and ventilation was an issue (which is not typical in structure fires). Any thoughts on this type of situation? Is fire a concern onboard these ships? And I’m right there with you on not wanting to be 40 feet BELOW sea level lol… but to be clear, if anything happened causing a catastrophe like a hull or keel crack, chances are being below sea level won’t make much of a difference in the scheme of things unless water is flooding in… in which case there are bigger problems to worry about.
Car fires do often start in the 12V electrics, no matter the kind of fuel. Problem is, if you don't react ultra fast, the whole deck becomes an inferno. So you need a fast reacting and powerful fire extinguishing system and just as powerful bilge pumps to keep the fire from spreading. And while it's literally impossible to extinguish a burning EV battery, you can get away the heat just by spraying it with water.
Nice, hope you guys have a safe voyage back home to your families. You guys have a hard job with working several months away from home. I would like to interview a chief officer and learn more about these ships on my channel.

Only the most expensive cars, such as Rolls Royce for example, are being locked and the keys are with the Chief Mate until discharging. In the rare occasion of a car being locked by itself with the key remaining inside, the receiving company has to decide how to deal with it - mostly they will call a keymaster to open it.

Great video! Was curious to know the average length and width of an average RORO deck. Total space versus usable space of a deck. Fascinating stuff! Thanks for sharing!
Fascinating view inside car carrier, thanks! Question: I was looking at a Glovis car carrier ship and the top deck of the ship was lined by lots of big white cubes... cabinets? What's in all those big white square things? There must have been at least 40-50 lining the outer top deck. Thanks again!
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I have not ever seen those white cubes your talking about. I am not sure what they could be. Some of the cars have white car covers that completely cover them during transport. Do you think it was car covers?
@@JDMRightHandDrive I looked back, and it was photos of the Glovis Sky I was looking at that showed these. The outside of the top deck has maybe 40 of these big mystery cubes. Any ideas on them? Also just realized that the Felicity Ace was the carrier that caught fire and sank, I didn't make that connection earlier. Really strange to think of that now watching the above video.
The ones you described are the casings for the air ventilations. Some casings though are rectangular in shape and covers either 2 to 6 air vents. Just to let you know, some of these vents are intakes while the others are out takes. There is also a designated ventilation fan on every car decks and holds. Hope this helps!
There’s one of these on it’s side off the Georgia coast full of 3000+ Chevrolet’s/800+ Kia’s/100+ Mercedes’s and 100+ Ram’s very interesting seeing it been cut up
Claustrophobic, fascinating! What is the thinner ramp on the side of the ship used for? How do drivers get in and out quickly to the cars? They just walk down all of the ramps?
Wow what an excellent video it’s insane to see how vast and huge they are inside. Is there any possibility of it being recovered from the ocean floor or is it too deep
Glad you liked to tour inside the ship. Yeah pretty cool the scale inside of these ships.I have seen some sunken roro ships and cargo recovered from the ocean floor. But I would think it would depend on the depth. I dont think they would be able to get down to the last Glovis ship that just sank.
The cars are lashed down to the deck of the ship from the front and the rear. As the ship rocks over the swells and the ocean the cars sway and moving unison as the ship rocks back and forth. The ship's crew aka the mates, do tours around the ships while out at sea and make sure the lashings are tightened down to ensure nothing is damaged.
Thank you for the interesting ship tour,i am amazed at the size of these car carrying ships inside, it's much appreciated,, and enjoy your new 2022 WRX..Greetings from Australia 👍 BTW my 2020 WRX came out from Japan on the " Miraculous Ace "

Any idea on ships damage control as far as what foreman and crew are trained for? when fire breaks out.. after hearing about the car carrier that caught fire today in the Atlantic on its way to Rhode Island..2/17/22
I fortunately have never had any type of fire break out on any vessel with me on board. All these ships have fire suppression systems and a very loud fire alarm system. The fire alarms are so load they can damage your ears. The staff at the sea port is property trained understand how to properly evacuate the vessel if a fire was to break out. Each worker walks the entire ship first thing in the morning when they de-lash all the vehicles from the deck. This gives every worker/supervisor a chance to get oriented with the ship layout. Each Foreman is only responsible for so many longshore workers, and would ensure every worker was evacuated. Coast Guard and the fire department would be able to respond to our terminal to assist as well. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Wow ! I always wondered what it looks like on the inside of those vehicle transporters. Question how long does it take to off load that beast? And how big of a crew do you need/work with a shift ? Thanks
Unloading (or discharging in sailor's language) can be done in one, maximum two days. It really depends on how many units you will be discharging, and it also depends on the speed of the stevedores (the people who do it). Crew is mostly comprised of about 20-22 people, not more. Everybody works at all times, especially during cargo operations.
Thank you for the video. I'm having my 1954 Ford Customline shipped RoRo from Vancouver BC to Sydney, Australia. Do you think it would be shipped way down in the bottom of the ship or there's a separate area for oddball cars?
Can you guide on how we can find out the status of cars being shipped from the port to the dealerships. I have a car waiting to be sent to dealer since 6/9.
Do a Google search of the vessels names for the shipping schedule. You should easily be able to find it and track it port or destination dates. Good luck!
I used an Import broker, there is a lot of different paperwork to complete in import process. The customs entry packet I received from the Import Broker was about 50 pages. All the paperwork needs to be verified by the US customs before they stamp their seal of approval. I think it is worth paying the money to not have to deal with the headache. Even if you hire an agent, there is still a lot of paper work you will have to do. You have to send different documents to various companies to get your cargo released from port. I want to make a video on this, but it's going to be a hard one to edit.
I am going to join a car carrier ship in couple of weeks . I was hoping if you could tell me what are job responsibilities and life of a 3rd officer on a ship like that ?
Sorry, I don't know exactly what job responsibilities the ships crew has. I only help manage the Port Longshore discharge operations. Happy to hear about your new job, I wish you the best!
Hi i live in los angles near the port.. I would be interested in working In this field. I'm moving the cars off the ship and I was just wondering how just want to find out where to apply they have any opportunities to do so? Would you know?
To be a driver, you would have to be part of the Longshore labor union. Those are very hard jobs to obtain, since all jobs are lottery driven. How this works is each PMA employee get a lottery card once per year or so, they can write down whoever's name they want on the card. When the port needs more workers they draw cars from the pot. And just like that if your name is drawn you are now a union casual. If you don't know someone who will put your name in the pot, you don't really have a chance of ever getting a job. Sometimes the port will open up for new hires from general public every 10 years or so, you would have to keep an eye out for that on their website. I wish you the best of luck. Thanks for watching and that was a great question.
I have never seen a load back operation, since my location is strictly discharge. If you do a search on YT, there are several good videos to give a good perspective on how loading is done. Yes you are correct, there are a couple of decks, where the height is adjustable. Usually it is the deck above the main deck, which can be lifted up, to fit taller cargo on the main deck. Stuff like large farming equipment or construction equipment, like loaders and excavators. I have also seen the main deck filled with Hyundai commercial busses, same size as a Metro Bus. Most vessels have side ramps on the port side of the ship. These can be used to set up a 2 way traffic pattern. It helps when the ship is almost full, give you more options to move things around differently with space limitations.
In the USA all the dock workers are ILWU Longshore union labor. Unless you get hired by the union which is almost impossible you cant work down there. They usually hire of a lottery system. Each employee get a ticket and they can write a person name on it. If your name gets drawn, you get a job.
I wonder if it had electric vehicles when it caught fire and sank ? Do you know? It's amazing how quickly these RoRo ships can be loaded and unloaded. My dad used to work with these types so I've seen them inside and out.
500 EV. But mainstream and deep pocket ones don't want that getting out . that would destroy the agenda2030 climate change plan. &15 min city yikes so much to hush
Glad you like it. I was amazed the very first day I worked on one of these ship. They are so much bigger in person and the video does not really give you the same perspective.
It depends on the what the RORO shipping schedule is for the company handling the export. Also how quickly the company can handle completing the vehicles export documents. Make sure when they send you a copy of the Bill of Lading and export documents, you contact a customs agent and get your paperwork process going.

So cool thanks! Why aren't all cars strapped down?
All cargo is strapped down during transport. We unlash all the cars when we start work, just before we begin driving cars off the ship.
That was awesome to see.
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent work. Very useful information.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching the video.
Very interesting video, specially when studying naval's
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching.
There’s one of these on it’s side off the Georgia coast full of 3000+ Chevrolet’s/800+ Kia’s/100+ Mercedes’s and 100+ Ram’s very interesting seeing it been cut up
So how do you take you 400 from one deck but take out only 113 from the second one if they are all neatly packed?
Claustrophobic, fascinating!
What is the thinner ramp on the side of the ship used for? How do drivers get in and out quickly to the cars? They just walk down all of the ramps?
The side ramp can be used for loading and unloading. it is also useful in setting up traffic patterns.
During storm or when the sea is rough the cars dont slide?
The cars are lashed down to the deck of the ship from the front and the rear. As the ship rocks over the swells and the ocean the cars sway and moving unison as the ship rocks back and forth. The ship's crew aka the mates, do tours around the ships while out at sea and make sure the lashings are tightened down to ensure nothing is damaged.
Thanks for sharing
No problem, thanks for watching!
Thanks for a great video, I found it very interesting, be nice to see loading/unloading happening
You bet
There's a time shift accelerated loading video here: ruclips.net/video/F-fPEhw8IQg/видео.html - I am curious how long that whole process takes though.
@@WillemvanderHorst Thank you so much for the link to the loading video, it was amazing,
Thank you for the interesting ship tour,i am amazed at the size of these car carrying ships inside, it's much appreciated,, and enjoy your new 2022 WRX..Greetings from Australia 👍 BTW my 2020 WRX came out from Japan on the " Miraculous Ace "
I am glad you enjoyed checking out the inside of the RORO ship. Yeah pretty amazing, video does not do justice to the scale and size you experience in person.
Thanks ❤
You're welcome 😊
What’s the average cost to ship a right hand drive keep wrangler from Wisconsin USA to Kenya?
Shipping is expensive these days. My guess would be around $2000. Contact a customer agent and they should be able to get you on the right pathway.
Thank you for the video. I'm having my 1954 Ford Customline shipped RoRo from Vancouver BC to Sydney, Australia. Do you think it would be shipped way down in the bottom of the ship or there's a separate area for oddball cars?
You bet, glad the video gave you some insight on RORO shipping. Congratulations on you car, I know how exciting it is when a new car is coming.
@@JDMRightHandDrive So there is a separate area. Nice! Thank you.
Hi there. What is the best way to stow the decks.
Ive got a RX3 coming back from europe (to NZ) now. Do you guys disconnect the batteries or jump start them??
Battery will not be disconnected, but we do have jumper boxes in case you battery dies at sea. Congrats on you car, hope it is a nice clean car!
Interesting...if you can...make the videos longer...thanks
Thank you, I will try to do a more in depth video in the future.
are you a tacoma longshoreman? I feel like I might’ve seen you at Blair and at Matson.
Hi! Can the cars inside the vessel get wet during voyage?
Can you guide on how we can find out the status of cars being shipped from the port to the dealerships. I have a car waiting to be sent to dealer since 6/9.
Do a Google search of the vessels names for the shipping schedule. You should easily be able to find it and track it port or destination dates. Good luck!
Do you do your own paperwork for importing your JDM cars? How difficult is it to do for a first timer or is it better to use a broker?
When does the tracking get updated? Does each car get scanned as it goes up the ramp?
Awesome video .
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
You have a interesting job.
Thanks, yeah it is a fun and very interesting job!
Can you please tell how loading is done on car carrier
Heard that few decks are movable
And also why there are side rams
It helps when the ship is almost full, give you more options to move things around differently with space limitations.
the best load by car on the ship
where do you find the staff to move the cars off the ship
In the USA all the dock workers are ILWU Longshore union labor. Unless you get hired by the union which is almost impossible you cant work down there. They usually hire of a lottery system. Each employee get a ticket and they can write a person name on it. If your name gets drawn, you get a job.
How do you get in and out of the cars with only a small distance between them?
Watching from Brisbane Australia:)
I wonder if it had electric vehicles when it caught fire and sank ? Do you know? It's amazing how quickly these RoRo ships can be loaded and unloaded. My dad used to work with these types so I've seen them inside and out.
More than a thousand Porsches were lost in that sinking. There was probably many many TAYCAN'S among them.
500 EV. But mainstream and deep pocket ones don't want that getting out . that would destroy the agenda2030 climate change plan. &15 min city yikes so much to hush
This is sooooooooo cool!!!
Glad you like it. I was amazed the very first day I worked on one of these ship. They are so much bigger in person and the video does not really give you the same perspective.
This is Grand Race not Felicity Race
I recently purchased a car in Japan, does it really take 1 - 2 months to confirm booking? If you can help expedite the process let me know $ 😅
It depends on the what the RORO shipping schedule is for the company handling the export. Also how quickly the company can handle completing the vehicles export documents. Make sure when they send you a copy of the Bill of Lading and export documents, you contact a customs agent and get your paperwork process going.
@@JDMRightHandDrive thanks for the info boss appreciate the words of wisdom .
@@JDMRightHandDrive I’ve only received a bol from exporter . He said that should be enough to file isf form. Is that enough to provide customs agent?
