If you are wondering how cars are shipped overseas, this video is for you. Short documentary on how a Glovis Roro Ship which means roll on roll off. This means the vehicle must be driven under its own engine power. Lets see how a car ship discharge operation works. I will go in explain how the vehicle unloading process works and how cars arrived to any major sea port. For this type of operation you need, drivers to discharge cargo, van drivers to return the drivers back to the ship. You will need foreman to help direct the drivers safely break out the cargo to minimize damage.
You will need a hatch tender to direct vehicle traffic during discharge operations. Of course a radio to easily communicate and direct the operations. There is much more, but I thought this would give the RUclips community a good understanding on the logistics operations of roro car shipping. These are how the Kia's come into the USA. Not all the vehicles on ship are for our port. The ship when full from Korea, usually stops at 4 to 5 different major sea ports to unload the cars.

My autistic son loved this! Thank you!
I’m researching shipping my Overlanding rig via RoRo from United States to South Africa, nice video, thanks
Very cool to see how Ro/Ro works from inside the carrier. Great content!
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video!
This was so cool, amazing how you get all the cars on board, and manage to take the plan of fitting them in to actually having them boarded
Thank you my guy. Preparing for this form of shipment from Germany!
I received notification a few days ago that my vehicle would be boarding the Hestia leader soon. Wonderful to see what these vessels look like from the inside.
Nice and congrats on you car. Yeah, the inside of these ships are completely different that what I thought before working in the industry.
Awesome video. Im getting a car delivered today by ship, and Im stressed out over possible damage, haha. Looks like a pretty good operation . Thanks again
Thanks and glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I wish you the best of luck your car arrived undamaged. 🙏
super interesting. thank for you for letting us see how these processes work. I love vids like this! How hard people work at these professions, how skilled they are etc.
I am impressed, never thought of how cars are shipped!
Yeah it's pretty incredible. The way I thought things were are completely different than how they are.
I'm glad you posted this. I work in the Port of Tacoma but have only seen the parking lot on land. I've never actually got to see the ship part.
This is fascinating. I appreciate your effort in putting this together!
Glad you enjoyed it! I will be making more RORO ship videos since I seem to be one of the only people on RUclips with the access to create videos like these. I have un uploading right now and it will be available to watch later today. Thanks for watching.
I have an upcoming job interview for a cargo ship company, and this was very helpful to get a deeper understanding of what's coming. Thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Pretty cool video. We just found out that our new Mitsubishi PHEV is on the Triton Ace currently bound for the Port of Vancouver Ca then onto the Port of Tacoma where it will be shipped to our US dealer.
Cool video - nice to see how big the ships interior is!
This answered so many questions I've wondered for years.😊
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Mighty Ships television series did a full episode on a huge RoRo vessel years ago that went into tons of detail.
Thanks almost exactly what I was looking for after hearing about the highway ship was on fire
Glad I could help. I have also be following that fire. I feel really bad for the fire fighter that got lost in the ship and died in the fire. I was thinking about making a walk around video as a training video for fire departments. I work as a first responder and I know that training is key to survival.
That was an amazing tour! Would love to see if you guys do strip and stuff of RORO in Tacoma and how this works if they do it in the yard or on the vessel for the terminal convenience.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I just finished filming a more in depth process of the car unloading process. I will do some high and heavy cargo next and talk more in depth about the yard next video. Thanks for watching.
That's the East Blair terminal. Nice to know someone down there is making awesome videos of the job you do. I'm the Pilots chauffeur, you might have seen me pull up to the ships gangway in a black continental or Escalade when they're getting off and on the ships
Pretty cool, I will look for you Escalade when I am down there next and say hello to you!
I really appreciate this video. This ship seems to be a sister to the Felicity Ace which just burned down with my VW inside of it. I was wondering what it looked like on the inside. Very interesting.
Sorry to hear about your car. That is so frustrating and sad to hear. Hopefully you can get a replacement VW asap. Good luck to you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for posting this, really interesting. I have a TVR Chimera coming from Southampton UK to Tacoma right now. I'm nervous about the process that's for sure. Due to arrive late Feb.
No problem. Good luck with the shipping and congrats on your import.
Awesome!
It would be super cool to see an engine room tour.
That is a restricted area. I would have to ask the Chief Officer next time I am on board a vessel and see if I can get a quick tour.
like to see the actual parking and "extraction" of a few vehicles
Thanks for uploading this video. I have seven years of experience working on a RoRo ship, but not a ship of this size. my ship is small, can only be loaded with 1000 vehicles only.
Glad it was helpful! It is defiantly a cool experience to see the operation live in person on a ship of this scale!
Could you please do a vid on modifed cars coming onto the ship, esp lowered vehicles
One would think that the cost of making those wood wheels wouldn't be a cheap option either? I understand some comments below about height restrictions which makes sense. Most countries I have visited have strict restrictions about wood coming in to the country. I am sure there is a process for ensuring the wood is treated.
I have just purchased a Daihatsu Copen and it will be shipped soon. Came here to see the process! Thanks
Nice. I work at the Port of Freeport Tx. I love driving cars. The other day I drove Porches Audi VW and almost drove a Lamborghini but another girl beat me to it. Great video.
Darn to bad you didn't get a chance to drive the Lambo. Longshore work is the best, congrats on your name being drawn. My dad was an A Man and did 36 years on the Seattle waterfront. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.
@@JDMRightHandDrive My name being drawn. I don’t know what that means but yes I cried the first time I drove my first car off the ship. I was saying God this is a blessing and so easy!
Thats my job too ...everytime i drive a different brand car i fee excited...but bored after only driving same brand cars
@@abdelalibouachmir I finally drove a Lamborghini.
Thats amazing
Glad you enjoyed the video, it is a cool process to watch!
Nice bro, I work at port of Houston, nice 🤙
Very cool! Nice to hear from another dock worker! Stay safe on the waterfront!
Thanks for this. Could use as advice on RoRo vs enclosed .
Hello bro keep it up your job
Thank you, I will do my best!
Thanks for the video! Didn't think such a video even existed but thought I'd try and search for it and voila! My car is on-route on an identical looking ship called Grand Dolphin.
Glad you enjoyed it, congrats on your car. What car are you importing?
@@JDMRightHandDrive New Jeep Wrangler :)
Good bro
Thanks
Can you please do a video on the harness process to secure the cars. What are the challenges
I can show you how the lashing are secured to the vehicles, but do to the Port Union regulations I am not allowed to install/remove lashing because it violates the labor contract since I am not a longshore worker.
Great video ! How do the drivers know which car is parked where ?!
Very interesting thank you. Those cars were certainly very tightly packed next to each other, how ever do the drivers manage to get out of the cars once parked ?
Very cool to see this! How long does it take to unload all the vehicles from the ship? 1800 vehicles and 44 people you mentioned in the video. Doing some rounding, it seems to take around 50 trips of back and forth to get all the vehicles off.
1800 cars with 44 drivers is a one day 8 hour operation. It takes about 6 minutes per trip for a car to be driven off the ship and the driver to return.
Interesting, first time seeing bulldozer with ancient wheel
Great video and so cool to see! How long does it take for a ship to start unloading after being moored? And how long would it take this ship to offload all of it's vehicles?
Once the ship is secured to the dock, we can usually be on board the vessel to start de-lashing the cargo with in an hour or so. For one 8 hours shift can unload around 2000 cars. Good questions, thanks for watching!
I would love to load of shipped to drive cars on and vans and trucks and excavators some people have all the luck don’t lie I would love a job doing that thank you very much for the video
You are very welcome, I'm glad you like the video. It's a really interesting place to work!
Hi dear, Superb video am thinking how load cars in ships and how important cars from abroad very nice to see you and video
Glad you liked it.👍 Apricate the nice complements!🙏
Wow! Thanks for doing this video for us. I've ordered a Toyota 4Runner and didn't realize that the extras like the roof rack on once it gets to the port. Can you talk about any of that?
I will have to look into this one. Once the cars leave the ship, they are driven to large parking lots at Auto Warehousing Company. The dealerships place orders with specific dealer options and accessory packages. These accessories are installed by AWC technicians. Cars are shipped out on rail or trucks to the dealerships after this. I would have to ask permission to film all this. Maybe in the future I can try. Thanks for watching my channel.
@@JDMRightHandDrive That would be cool. Thanks for responding.
Each car is secured with nylon lashing at the front an back at points for lashing by the the are exceeding the speed limit for discharge
Well said sir, spot on!💪
Very interesting content, thanks for sharing. I wonder why the cars are covered with protection only on some small areas?
Glad you liked it. The decks have holes for the lashing to secure. Engine oil and other fluids can leak down through the holes from deck to deck getting on the cars paint. The covers help to protect the paint during transport!
The high dollar cars get a full body cover Mercedes-Benz Porsche ect ect ect.....
This illustrates the folly of powering the world without fossil fuels, including the ship and everything (heat-dependent) that made it and the cars. Even with huge losses of open space for ugly wind turbines, they couldn't scale up to match the total power and density.
Now I see why or what the cars have the hook in them and is to strap it to the floor!!! 😮
Yes, that was something that I never understood until I had my first day on the car ship. Thanks for watching.
With all your experience in the ro/ro business would you be comfortable transporting a low ground clearance Ferrari F355 ro/ro ? Im concerned when I see the cars driving so fast over the ramps and the nose of the car hitting. Great video and very informational !
There is a minimum shipping height the RORO's companies require around 5 inches. If it is really low, I would just ship it on a container to guarantee it does not get damaged. Up to you and good luck. Congrats on your new car!
Interesting video, thank you ! One thing i didn't see mentionned, is how the drivers go back to the cars in an unloading operation after the get a car out, are they driven back in the vans you mentionned or do they just walk ? Why do you think some heavy equipement manufacturers don't ship the vehicules with the proper tires on and instead those funny looking wooden wheels ?
Good point! I am editing a new video from another operation. I will cover that topic in it for sure. Thanks for the feedback.
I always wanted to know how the drivers get out of the car without hitting the car door next to them since the cars are parked so close together?
Cars are stowed with the passenger side door to the wall of the ship. Once the driver gets out,. the next car parks 4 inches away and repeats all the way across to the other side of the ship. The will leave leave about 3 feet between the drivers door and the opposite side of the ship. You remove the cars in the opposite order.
Ever any drifting of the non water variety?
How is the safety of the vehicles (specifically campers) in regard to theft nowadays during roro shipping? I heard things have improved.
Theft would be pretty hard. All major sea ports have security stationed at main gate entrance. You have to have a TWIC card in order to gain access. Once cargo is discharged from the ship, it is stored in a secured parking lot until picked up by customer with all proper paperwork or shipped out for dealership inventory, via train or truck.
How do the drivers park the cars so close together? Are they strapped tightly enough to not hit each other?
Now i have appreciation for my car's journey.
Each car is stowed with about 4 to 5 inches between the sides and 16 to 18 inches front to back. When cargo is stowed there is a spotter instructing each driver exactly where where to park the cars. You would think that cars would hit each other out at sea, but they don't. As long as the lashings are secured , check and maintained throughout the voyage. The cargo just all rocks together with the ships deck in unison. The biggest area of damage comes from drivers turning the wrong way when they are pulling cars out of stow of the initial breakout. Each driver is trained to turn the wheels to the left during breakout. Sometime there are beams or other things that distract drivers and they make mistakes and damage the cargo.
Thanks for the video! I'm shipping a vehicle from Southampton UK to Tacoma, WA USA, which is the furthest port on the route. Is the vehicle moved throughout the voyage to have it positioned for offloading at the last port?
Usually once you car is stowed on the ship it does not need to be moved until it being unloading to your port of destination. The shipping company usually plans how to load cargo based on the port rotation for discharge. The shipping line prefers not to have to re handle cargo to minimize the chance of damage. Sometimes the port rotation will change because all the car yards are full and no room for new vehicles to be unloaded. This would be a scenario where your car could be re handled in order to shuffle cars around the ship to unload the rest. The ships are a huge 5000 piece puzzle inside with so many cars. Hope that helps. What car are you getting from the UK?
@@JDMRightHandDrive OK great description, thank you. I am getting an old VW Transporter.

That's awesome!
What do you do if the battery has gone flat during the voyage?
Those wooden wheels, lmfao that's incredible. Great vid thanks
We have a maintenance man with a battery jumper box just in case. He can also break into locked cars.
@@JDMRightHandDrive Cheers mate, I hoped it would be something as simple as that. Wasn't sure of legal liability issues in our litigious society
What is the process for someone to pick up a JDM car at the port of Tacoma? Could you show the process the times of pickup etc?
ruclips.net/video/HsNpN0BIk7E/видео.html This is the video of when I picked my SIlvia up on Port. I over a little bit of the paperwork process. But yes, I will make a video about the process I experienced importing 3 different cars from Japan to USA.
Purpose of the wood wheels is it makes them shorter, height is a large restriction on these ships
That makes sense, I didn't know that!
How does all the strapping down work, we see lots of cars being driven off one by one, but how do they get the straps taken off? are there teams of people going round unstrapping cars as they are taken? or does everyone unstrap all the cars before the driving starts?
We spend the first 1 of the shift having our labor force de-lash all the vehicles. They are wearing Tyveck suits to minimize the chance of scratching any of the cars as they work they way through the cargo holds. Once all the cars are de-lashed, we begin driving the cars off the ship.
Thanks a lot for the video. I've got a question - are these storeys technically tweendecks? Can they be removed?
Good question, certain decks can be raised or lowered depending on what cargo is being loaded onto the ship. You can see that huge scissor lift looking thing. That raises and lowers the adjustable decks. Only the decks near the stern ramp are adjustable, the rest are fixed. This allows to fit, excavators, loaders, busses, huge farm equipment ect. These decks can be adjusted around 1 meter or 3 feet depending on the ship.
@@JDMRightHandDrive thank you very much for taking the time to answer!
once emptied, does the roro ship leave port empty or is it used for other types of cargo?
Kia seltos ❤❤❤ from india
Thanks for watching and the comment! Namaste🙏
My Audi q8 just came in on the SFL composer! Wonder how long is it going to take to get to NY? Is t there a shortage of truckers that have to pick up the cars? Also, I’m surprised the sides of the cars are not protected. Can scratch easily
Depending on the price range of the cars, the more expensive cars are fully wrapped in protective coating and car covers. The lower price Kia's dont get those covers. Cargo is hardly ever damaged. Our workers wear tyvek paper suits to minimize chance for paint to get scratched.
@@JDMRightHandDrive my car is been sitting over week and the port. Ship encountered rough seas.gotta check every single car.
Are the drivers careful with cars that are lowered or have front spoilers that aren't stock? I'm importing a BMW and have had bad luck with a broken AMG spoiler on a Mercedes that was shipped in a container.
I can't speak for all seaports. But at our location o
Foreman as well as superintendents supervise the drivers. We go over a safety meeting before each shift and talk about expectations to keep speed down and to make sure everything is safe and cargo is not damaged. If I see any driving behavior that is not in compliance, I address it immediately with the foreman and we talk to the driver and let them know to slow it down. If a driver continues to drive too fast or unsafe, we will fire them from the job.
may i know what type of charter that you guys use?
awesome video! how often do accidents happen?
I have been working down there for about 4 years. Over all the ships I have worked I can only recall two cars that got minor damage. Usually this happens when the driver does not pay attention to the Foreman when they are breaking the car out of stow. Its pretty incredible considering we move around 100k cars per year.
interesting to see where they go, im the one loading these cars from germany
Awesome, glad to share with you on the other side of the ocean!
Are there RORO vessels that can accommodate 18 wheeled vehicles with loads? GLOVIS looks limited by ceiling height in their parking bays.
The main deck on most ships level 6 is adjustable. It can be raised up 10 feet or so with a scissor lift. This allows to fit full size busses, excavators, large farm equipment ect.
Good video
I need to rent vessel from South Korea to North Africa do you have any idea or recommendations?
It really depends on what company you purchase the car from and what shipping lines they do business with. From what I see, all the different shipping lines operate the same. If the car is really valuable you may want to consider shipping in a container vs RORO. Good luck!
My porsche is on the Felicity Ace right now :(
I hope that your car was not one that was damaged from the fire. Best of wishes to everyone waiting for their cars. Glad to see that at least nobody was hurt from the ships crew or the rescue team. Fingers crossed, my anxiety would be through the roof with one of my cars on board.
Good job containers ship was very good the car names kia
Thank you!
Longhorn LLC for the best in car shipping...
I noticed most of these cars have their bumper tow eyelet inserted. Is that used during the shipping process for tie down or moving the cars?
Yes, those eyelets are used to secure the the lashing during shipping over the ocean to keep the cars secured to the deck. Here is another one of my RORO ship videos that shows the lashings. ruclips.net/video/YfEL-mW3eDk/видео.html
How are these Cars anchored down to the Deck ????
Interesting. How long does it take to travel from Japan to the United States? Also are they affected by unloading problems they are having in California? Thanks and have a good one
Usually takes about 10 to 14 days to come across the ocean according to the ships crew. The Port of Tacoma is not as backed up compared to California. The most I have seed a car ship wait to be unloaded is between 1-3 days. Its usually caused to labor shortages. Port of Tacoma has a military contract, which takes 1st priority of the labor force. Car ships are last priority and somedays we don't get any workers. Covid exposures are also causing labor shortages. If anyone test positive, all workers that had contact on the job site are required by the Union to take 10 days quarantine time even if they test negative. Fun times down there on the water, super busy everyday.
@@JDMRightHandDrive interesting. Thanks for reply
What's with some ships pulling into a port but then going back out before coming back in again a few days later...?
Some ships have different cargo on board that goes to different terminals. For example we offload all Kia cargo at terminal 7 . Same ship also has Hyundai cargo that has to be discharged at terminal EB1. Also certain docks can only handle so much weight or psi and very heavy stuff can only be unloaded at specific terminal’s because of this. The fun that comes with logistics.
Great info! What port do you work at?
Port of Tacoma.
I thought the ship name was "Sunshine Ace" which currently is transporting my car.
Hi, thanks for the video. I would like do this kind of job, I have experience working in a parking lot in Manhattan. Do you know where can I apply? Thank you!!!
I need to apply for a per diem superintendent position through a Steveadoring company.
I thought they used wood instead of tires is so the loaders sat lower.
What sort of fire suppression systems do they have on the vehicle decks? High expansion foam?
Also, do they secure those cars to the deck to avoid shifting in heavy seas?
I am not exactly sure about what type of fire systems are equipped on the ships. I do see what look like sprinkler heads on each deck, but I am not sure what comes out of them. As far as the cars, they are secured with lashings on the front and back of the vehicle to hold them in position during shipping. Some of my other car ship videos should show the lashings.
At 2:15 you can see a pile of straps, and at 2:26 you can see an example of how they tie them down.
If you notice most new cars have about a 2"x2" square cover on the front and back bumper, inside that cover in a threaded hole.
They screw in a big I bolt and that's what the straps hook to.
One of those I bolts comes with your jack so if you get stuck, you screw that in and that's what you hook to, to get pulled out of mud or snow, since there's nothing on cars to hook to anymore.
New Roro ship's mainly have High expansion foam system. Some older Roro vessels are fitted with Fixed CO2 fire fighting system.
Regarding cargo, they are always secured using using lashing belts for cars, heavy lashing belts or chains for Heavy cargos like big trucks, excavator etc
Can you roughly say how long a RoRo ship takes from Japan to Germany?
Now long does it take for your car to come off and be ready for pickup after the shop arrival date?
Mine says arrival or discharge is April 14 does that mean my car will be ready for pickup on that day?
Not exactly, you will have to provide the bill of lading to the shipping line. You will have to pay the port skid fee. Your car will have to pass us customs soil test. Your importer will be finishing up your cars entry packet at this time.
This process was usually about a week for me with my 3 car as that I imported from Japan. The port will contact you and you can pick your car up. You will need a Twic card or an escort to have access to the terminal. Once you have your car you take your customs entry packet to US customs and border patrol they will give you their stamp of approval. From there you can go register your car at the DMV and you’re good to go. Good luck it’s kind of a stressful process the first time.
Is each car chained (griped) to the deck to prevent movement in rough seas?
Yes all the vehicle are secured with front and rear lashings. Here is a link to my Instagram for a picture instagram.com/p/CM2ZtmPHc-0/?
At 2:15 you can see a pile of straps, and at 2:26 you can see an example of how they tie them down.
How do subarus come to Australia what ship do they come on? is there any videos?
I am not exactly sure about Australia. I would imagine they still come over on a similar size RORO ship to your guys local sea port. Once they are unloaded from the ship they will be loaded onto a train or truck and shipped to the dealerships. Glovis has the shipping contract for North America. All of the Subaru's are off loaded in the USA at the Port of Portland and shipped via rail or semi truck. But the offloading process should look just like this video. It is the same no matter which country you are from.
🙏👍💯
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!
How do the off load drivers get into the vehicles without denting/dinging up the doors?
Great question
Each row has enough room for the driver to get in, when that car is gone the next driver can get in and so on.
They usually “stair step” the cars out so you will have access to more cars at once
def do more! can you show where the mustangs are going to Australia!
I’m going on the ship the green cove. What all do you do when they are loading the car into the ship?
It is the same process as discharge. Drivers drive cars onto the ship. The foreman directs the drivers into each spot. Once all the vehicles are parked into position they are strapped down to the deck with lashings. I have only observed load back a couple of times. We usually only discharge cargo at my location.
@@JDMRightHandDrive oh see I’ll be the guy working ok the ship lol
Are the drivers who onboard and offboard the cars the same? As in do they travel with the ship or are the drivers local to the port
Amy, the drivers are employees that work for the local sea port known as Longshore workers. Three tiers of Longshore workers, entry workers are known casuals, next level is B Man and top level is an A Man.
@@JDMRightHandDrive Thanks! So interested in these car shipping videos since mine will be on a ship soon!
Do they unload cars on the weekends or just during the week?
7 days a week 24 hours a day. All depends on the vessel schedule. We unload the ship as soon as it lands. Good question and thanks for watching.
The Tritan Ace is owned by WILHELMSEN SHIP MANAGEMENT SDN. BHD. not Glovis so your video title is a little confusing
can you use this as well for transporting your own cars country to country?
Yes, these ships can be used for my personal vehicles or anybody's personal vehicle. We call that a PV transport. If you need to ship a vehicle, contact a local customs agent and they can help you set everything up.
So are cars driven just to unload from the ship? Or driven to delivery Center?
They are driven from ship to processing center and they shipped via rail or semi truck to the dealerships.
Are the vans getting loaded or are they just bringing back the drivers to get more cars?
Yeah, drivers drive cars off the ship to the yard and the vans follow them. The vans give them a ride back to the ship. They make about 32-38 trips to complete all cargo discharge.
@@JDMRightHandDrive Thanks.

How loud is a driver allowed to play the car stereo?
Not very loud on the ship. They need to be able to hear the foreman's instructions and follow directions one on the vessel. I'm sure when they're off the ship and driving to the parking lot they probably crank up the stereo!
Is not allowed to play the music.
Whats the purpose of the pink tape in some areas?
That is reflective tape that allows to drivers to see areas that are dangerous and could cause a potential accident or damage.

How long does it take to offload the ship of cars?
We can do a maximum of about 2000 cars in a eight hour shift. It depends on the quantity of cars , plus how many drivers we have available to hire. There are also different parking lots the cars are driven to coming off the ship. The time and distance it takes to drive each car of the ship to is destination and return back to the ship is called a turn. Depending on which lot and the time will effect the production levels. 3000 to 3500 is a two day operation. Above 4000 cars would be a 3 day operation to discharge.
@@JDMRightHandDrive I was wondering what took so long for my car to be offloaded. The worst part is how much time these cars spend in the actual port. Loved your video man. Really interesting.
