A Christmas Carol with Alister Sims has always been my favourite.
😊❤️😊❤️
The Yule log is actually a really cool story also. It was originally a nordic tradition. During the 12 days of Christmas (winter solstice) people would meticulously choose a tree and stick the largest end in the hearth to burn, with the tree sticking out the door. They would start the fire using the previous years remnants of the yule 'tree' soaked in wine (or grog in Norway). The tree would slowly burn down during the 12 days, with remnants being stored away for the following year. This was believed to protect against lightning and the ghosts of the previous years. France started the tradition of pouring wine on the logs to have a nice smell, and later they would sprinkle them with different materials to make different colored fires. Like Borax, which makes a bright green fire.
Such wonderful information! Thank you! 😊😊😊
I didn't know the Borax, trick thanks. I think you meant Glogg: the Nordic version of mulled wine. Grog is a Brit thing.
Very cool extra tidbits to know!!!
@@brandyjean7015 yep! you're absolutely right about Glogg. Also, the other colors of fire are:
Potassium Nitrate = Violet
Barium Nitrate = Apple Green
Borax = Vivid Green
Copper Sulphate = Blue
Table Salt = Bright Yellow
Grandma used to read poetry to us, late at night; after we woke up to greet her when she came back from the night shift at her factory, she'd read us back to sleep. Three of of my favorites were Christmas ghost stories. "Old Christmas Morning" by Roy Helton, "The Witch of Coos" by Robert Frost, and "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert W. Service fit particularly well with the season. Check them out if you get a chance.
my favorite Xmas carol movie is the old original movie
Wonderful memories Dolores! ❤️❤️
@@CuriousHistoryYTMy favourite is the 2009 animated version.
I prefer the book it has more of that ghost story feel to it.
The puritans were a very Calvinist group a lot of the first European Americans were Puritans.
A Nightmare before Christmas is both a Halloween film and Christmas film
My favorite ghost stories are from M.R. James. He was a professor at King's College and Eton College around the turn of the 19th century. He had a tradition of meeting up with a small group of friends every Christmas and reading them a ghost story that he had written. You can see movies of a lot of his stories on RUclips, and the BBC even did a mini-series thing called "A Ghost Story for Christmas" where they dramatized his Christmas gatherings and several of his story readings. Highly recommend checking him out.
M. R. James is a gem of a writer. “Ghost Stories of an Antiquary” is a must read for anyone interested in Victorian/Edwardian writers of what I call tales of terror.
Our family always retold various family ghost and weird tales and Holidays was when the family gathered
I actually did a college paper on the folklore of my family
Awesome!!! 😊😊😊
Thanks for the recommendation! I found a used copy of the collection on Amazon. Can't wait to read!
My two favorite Christmas Carol movies are A Christmas Carol with Reginald Owen and Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. I always thought of A Nightmare before Christmas as a Halloween story, but it could be considered both Halloween and Christmas.
Yes! Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol is a personal favorite. I was delighted to find it on DVD a a few years ago. (Yes, I’m old. 🤪)
Awesome! 😊😊😊
@@joanhoffman3702 So am I ;)
Anyone hit “like” as the video begins, just because we know it’ll be fantastic like the rest? 🤗
You are awesome Regina! 😊❤️😊❤️
🤗
This was beautifully told. Many thanks from one who has mostly considered it from the other (Pagan) side!
Thank you Elizabeth! 😊😊😊
Me too, Elizabeth. So in case we don't meet again: Solstice blessings to you and yours.
@@brandyjean7015 May the Season of Returning light be good to you, as well!
@@CuriousHistoryYT I've always suspected that you tell ghost stories at Christmas because it would be too dangerous at Samhain, but safer after the sun has turned back. It's still a dark time, darker in those days, but the Christ--or the sun has been reborn.
This was fascinating! I had no idea Christmas was basically outlawed at one point. In New England (Maine specifically), ghost stories during winter are fairly common among the older groups. The stories I have heard revolve around passed family members coming back to join the festivities. 👀Spooky. By far, the movie interpretation I most enjoy is the 1951 Christmas Carol. I think it best captures the grittiness of the times.
Nice! Thank you for sharing this Pheona!
My favorite version is the one with Alastair Sims, it may be the one you were talking about! Patricia Gambino Harrington
I've always wondered why "Its the most wonderful time of year" had the line "There'll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long long ago."
Thank you for another enlightening episode! I love the version with Sir Patrick Stewart (made by TNT, I think); and it's not Christmas until Rudolph and the Peanuts gang arrive! Oh, and if you want to sing more, have at it because you have a wonderful voice for singing and storytelling. Cheers!
Bless you L! So very kind of you to say!
I agree wholeheartedly!
Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas Eve viewing tradition in our family. I watch it on Halloween too! So got me, it’s both! 😊
My favorite versions of A Christmas Carol are:
First: 1984 version starring George C Scott
Second: 1988 Scrooged starring Bill Murray
Both excellent choices Mikki! The end of Scrooged with Bill Murray always gets me. Usually wiping tears away.
As my first exposure to the story of A Christmas Carol as a kid, An All Dogs Christmas Carol will always be my favorite.
The Alistair Simm version is my favorite, with the George C. Scott in a fairly close second. It's not Christmas season until I listen to Robert Goulet's Christmas album lol. You could do more singing as far as I'm concerned - you have a very pleasant voice :-) I really enjoyed this video, and the history behind some of our traditions. ~Robin
Thank you Robin! I appreciate it!
My parents had that Andy Williams album. It's still one of my favorites!!
My favorite Christmas Carol movie is the one with Patrick Stewart as Ebenezer Scrooge.
Patrick Stewart did an amazing rendition!!!
Really fascinating background to both the "A Christmas Carol" and the tradition of storytelling at a somewhat scary time of the year (in olden times). The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite also and Pops, you have a wonderful singing voice!
😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️
My two Christmas movies are : A Christmas Carol starring George C Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge and the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Both redemption stories. Plus Cindy Lou Who and Max the dog both are great.
The saddest Christmas story to me, is The Little Match Girl.
Good King Wenceslas, Christmas carol is all about a rich King trying to help and basically push a poor man (much bewildered by the King's actions in choosing him) into accepting the King's charity. Yet one of my favorites.
As always the past history of the holiday is well done, John.
All Soul's day in late November, Halloween, the Winter Solstice and the Day of the Dead seem more closely linked to the thinning of the veil than Christmas to me.
Krampas is long before the emergence of Santa, yet similar with the you'd better be good ...or this will happen type of story.
I got laughing over the telling of ghost stories at Christmas. Imagine telling children them on Christmas Eve, then tucking them in bed saying "Sleep well." ??
John you have a wonderful singing voice. When does your Christmas carol album get released?
🤣🤣🤣 I’m certain that an album of Christmas carols sung by yours truly would mark the end of this channel but thank you for the positive feedback! 🤣🤣🤣
I think the same as you Rags. Imagine tucking the kids in on Christmas Eve with a ghost story. It would be difficult for Santa to visit if the kids are too afraid to sleep!
The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favourite. 🎄🐸 Costubers have remarked on how period accurate the Muppet costumes are. Check out Nicole Rudolph's recreation of Gonzo's costume, but made for a human. (Several videos, she even made the shoes).
Thank you for this Ni An! I will definitely give it a look!
The Stone Tapes one of my favorite Xmas personal traditions
Love it! 😊😊😊
The Christmas Carol is my favorite tale.
Love this one! A Christmas Carol starring Alastair Sims is my favorite version of all the Christmas Carols! You are absolutely the best at telling these stories! Thank you for this channel!! LOVE IT!!!! Patricia Gambino Harrington
Thank you Patricia! 😊😊😊

I love the old version of Scrooge. The black and white version. Thanks for this video because I definitely learned something today about Christmas and ghost stories associated with it. Absolutely awesome.
😊😊😊😊😊
Great video, John! Today is Sunday, 25th December! It is 7: 55 p.m. when I finish watching this video. A great video on a great day! The ghost stories are intregal part of Christmas. The third member of the godhead is referred as the Holy Ghost. It means He who is in the form of spirit. Without flesh, blood and bones. The connection between ghost stories and Christmas day is therefore purely spiritual.
To evoke this spiritual realm perhaps the generations passed these stories down.
Imagine it is a mediaeval Christmas day and it has been snowing all day long. When evening comes the wind starts hissing outside with occasional creaking of the doors and windows. Inside a dimly lit chamber, at the dinner table an old man goes on unceasingly telling the chilling tales that has been passed down to him by his grandparents. The listeners huddled together almost engulfed him. There are no noises except the voice of the old man and the occasional creaking of the doors and windows, the hissing sound of the wind outside and the sounds of the cutlery.
Is there any time more perfect for evocation of the shapeless entity who reigns in the unseen world? It is purely a spiritual conjuration! The evocation of which produces awe and wonder at the same time.
Thank you John for your wonderful video!
Have a lot of cakes and ale! Merry Christmas to you, your family and your wonderful grandson!
Thank you Raju! Merry Christmas!
Nice job very informative as usual my favorite version of a Christmas Carol is the George C Scott one
Thanks Randy. George C Scott was born to play that role!
My favorite A Christmas Carol is the 1984 version with George C Scott. Love it! It's usually the very first Christmas movie I watch every year! Funny enough, my favorite movie to watch on Halloween also stars George C Scott. It's the 1980 movie The Changeling. Awesome scary ghost story!
From 1659-1681 the Puritans outlawed the celebration of Christmas in Massachusetts. Winter is cold, and often a struggle. Celebrating, with family & friends is something to look forward to, in my opinion.
Totally agree Brandy!!!
The original Grinches.
It seems like I say this a lot in the comments, but this one was one of your best yet!
Looking forward to more good ones this month! 🎄 👻 🎅📯
Thank you! 😊❤️😊❤️😊❤️
First John let me say what a great tenor voice you have! Who knew? Second, this tale of "Curious History" caused fans to delve deeply into their own Christmas Traditions and likes and dislikes. Judging from the comments, we are really a peaceful, loving, proud traditional society. Whether we want to admit it or not. It's obvious that lots of love, thought and research went into the making of this video. Wonderful job!!! Thank you once again and Merry Christmas!
Thank you Rick!
I agree! Such an awesome community we have. Thank you for being a part of it! Merry Christmas! 😊😊😊
Very good information I love listening to ghost audio books at winter. You can't feel a ghost story in the warmth of summer .you need the ice biting into your bones to enjoy but remember thousand were starving in England .wene a Christmas carol was written
First off you have a beautiful singing voice!! I never knew about the history of telling ghost stories at Christmas. Seems a little odd that during joyous celebrations with family and friends that stories of fear, hauntings and death would be included. But when there's not a lot of entertainment options were available and you have to get creative!!
Thank you Beth. Very kind of you to say.
I agree with your comment about lack of entertainment back then. I guess they just made do with what they had!
Nice singing voice, John! I'm going to see the Christmas Carol on stage next week! Keep up the good work, and may you and your family have a blessed and happy holiday season.
Thank you Charlene! A happy holiday season to you as well! 😊😊😊

An American Christmas Carol with Henry Winkler and A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Love ghost stories 🙂Hi from the UK...just seen an Amateur Dramatic group put on Christmas Carol it was good.
Wonderful!! 😊😊😊
Reginald Owen and Alistair Sim are my favorite Scrooge characters
Scrooged with Bill Murray is my favorite, but I lean towards the spooky and campy. As a Pagan, I seasonally have to "defend" my holiday decor choices. Reminding others that our traditions are passed around and shared is also a nice time to say just be kind and respectful. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for watching Paige!! 😊😊😊
I love your story telling. A Christmas Carol is a favorite story to read, as for film version I'll admit I'm particularly fond of Micky's version.
😊😊😊
There was an understanding that on Christmas, ghosts could not harm the living, thus the tales. What I find strange about Dickens was he was not genuinely nice to his immediate family, for someone who wanted to bring about the change in the human condition in a mass way. My favorite Scrooge is Alistar Sim then Albert Finney, and George C Scott. Krampus is Germanic and is like Black Peter that the Dutch have, but instead of leaving a lump of coal in a bad child's wooden shoe, he takes them back to his cave and eats them, just a cautionary tale that goes back, so be good kiddies as you don't want Krampus getting you. As for the Krampus movies- Humbug and utter garbage. So Merry Christmas to you John and yours, and as Master Yogurt from Spaceballs Says-May the Schwartz be with you!
Thank you Dan! This is a great comment! Thanks for expanding the conversation!
“Your Schwartz is as big as mine!” 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you Leslie!! 😊😊❤️❤️
1. We watch A Nightmare Before Christmas in November every year, because to us, it is both Halloween and Christmas.
2. My favorite Scrooge version is Alastair Sims' version, but Muppets is a family favorite as well. I enjoyed George C. Scott's version from the 1980s as well as Patrick Stewart's version from the 1990s.
Love it! 😊
An absolute classic. One you can’t miss at Christmas.😅
😊😊😊
"Spirited" is a fun one! But, then again, I always was a sucker for musicals. 😄 I really like what they did to make the original story new and fun instead of just remaking the same old thing. They carried it into the 21st century really well!
I haven’t seen it yet! Can’t wait! 😊😊😊

Not English, and ghost stories weren't part of my tradition, But as an adult I've felt much closer to my Ghosts than at Hallowe'en, Merry Christmas, and thanks.

I watch 'A Muppet's Christmas Carol' every single Christmas Eve.🎶 Cause after all there is only 1 more sleep till Christmas 🎶

I never put ghost stories and Christmas together they way you explained it. I do like the black and white movie Scrooge. It seems whenever they remake an old movie, it is not the same. Great video, and your singing at the end was pretty good. Enjoy your week.
Thank you Edward! 😊😊😊
Love your video about Christmas and pagan traditions. Also love your singing. Through the years, A Christmas Carol with Alastair Simms has also been my favorite. I saw it on TV as a child and watch it every year. It really captures the flavor of Victorian culture and it also was a commentary on England's rebuilding in the 50's after WW2. Thanks for the very educational video

Hi John, what another beautiful episode of Curious History, right in time for the Holidays! As for the movie? The 1984 version of A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott is perhaps my favorite, with the Muppets coming in 2nd. For some reason I love the Victorian area, and things involving the 18th Century, i don't know why but i do. I'm so glad that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, because i'm sure back in the day that were many that had a change of heart just by reading what happened to Scrooge, and perhaps thought it might happen to them. I look forward to seeing your next episode with a glad heart, and wish you and your family one of the best, brightest, and glorious Christmastimes you all can have. Many, Many thanks for all your videos, over this past year, and i would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas, to you and your family as well. I once dated Christmas Carol! She was an odd duck. She kept calling me Ebeneezer! I guess, though, that was better than Tiny Tim! Ha, ha!
You sleigh me David! 🤣🤣🤣
There's more to it. There seems to be a tradition for spookiness and the threat of evil before Holy Days. Spooky stories on Christmas Eve, then the holiness of Christmas Day; spookiness on Halloween, then the holiness of All Saints' Day. Walpurgisnacht and the Feast of St. John also fit the pattern. It's arguably a pattern that goes back to the first chapter of Genesis: "Evening came, and morning followed."
Awesome info! 😊😊😊

You have a wonderful voice. It's funny i constantly tell people that most of the "traditions" are actually pagan and have nothing to do with Christ and no one believes me. I believe in the more pagan history over christ being born on xmas day(which ppl who studied the bible had proven meticulously with the descriptions in the book and the timing BTW) Including Santa being Odin as an origin of the bearded traveler giving gives to those worthy, and watching over. I love reading ghost stories or legends around the holidays, it always gives an extra togetherness feeling
Very well said Soz!
The origins of Santa have always intrigued me. I may need to do some research! 😉
I too have tried to tell others about the pagan traditions of Christmas and get blank stares and disbelief. From the colors of Christmas to yule logs, it's old pagan rituals given new names and meanings.

It's a tossup between the Alistair Simm version and the George C. Scott version. There is also an excellent, well-animated version produced by Chuck Jones in 1972. Alistair Simm (just his voice) reprised his role as Scrooge. I like that in this cartoon Bob Cratchit had a cockney accent, which would have been more authentic.
I have to admit I like the Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol because I remember when it first aired on our black and white RCA TV when I was just six years old. Just hearing the music and songs from the cartoon brings me back to that cozy evening surrounded by family so long ago.

NBC is both a Halloween and Christmas film, the bridge between the two.
My favorite Christmas movies are The Grinch, Scrooged, and the Muppet Christmas Carol. After NBC of course.
I like satire and macabre themes. I cannot stand the carbon copy hallmark films that rehash the same tropes over again with over the top emotional drama and sappiness.
And other films that give us a snippet of Christmas like Narnia (the first one) are alright too because it had just enough "spirit" and light heartedness in what a technically a war setting.
Lady and the Tramp's beginning and end come full circle with Christmas nicely and Love Actually beautifully ties in so many people separated by a degree or two in their lives. Not everyone lives happily ever after, and some get the very thing they wanted only to realize it's not what they need, as is life.
All good stuff Carrie! 😊😊😊

I am partial to the film version played by Alastair Sim as my first choice, the version played by George C. Scott as my second choice and the numerous animated versions being led by the Muppet's as my third. As I get older though my wife has declared that I am becoming like Ebenezer Scrooge especially with the way businesses display Halloween on one side of a shelf, Thanksgiving on the other side of the same shelf and Christmas Decorations beginning on the next aisle over. There once was a time in America when Halloween would have been over for at least two weeks before the Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations were even thought about. Usually, Thanksgiving and Black Friday was the signal for Christmas to be put out on the shelves, and would somebody please tell me where some of the colors that are coming out for Christmas decorations coming from? I know that Christmas gets in the way of some religions, but Christmas is supposed to be about bright reds, blues and greens, not black, dull and boring. Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thank you Gerry! Merry Christmas to you too! 😊😊😊
