Shoutout to @16stops for clearly and explicitly explaining why so many Canon owners are switching to Sony.
Segment begins at 6:18
Here’s their channel: youtube.com/@16Stops
I was going trough the exact same thought process summer of 21. I really like the c70 sensor. And its possible to get two because of the price. Can do long recordings on a budget and so on. But I could also see all the problem mentioned here coming on the horizon. It made me pull the break. Keep using my older sony cameras and start investing in good and useful Sony lenses for future upgrade on that system.
Still waiting for a good opportunity to move in to the next decade camerawise. 😂
@ it seems like Sony looks at their ecosystem from a greater distance which helps the long run. Canon just looks at one product and says “it’s got good features” but they don’t look at how users are approaching this system as a career.
@@davidmorefield Canon: Release c300 iii with “legacy” EF mount. No adapters. Launched c70 with same sensor but with rf mount. Look out third party lenses from system… Its a no win game for players trying to pick what to invest in no matter how good the DGO sensor is.
@ *sigh
Oh wow you really are ditching your C70. Really the FX3 really did do that much better than the C70 for you eh?
Nope! Fx6!
6:14 Do you always wait for full payment first before giving the deliverables to the client or it depends on the agreement you had?
It definitely depends on the agreement and the client. I have some clients that I work for very frequently and I deliver footage immediately and they send payment later. We have an ongoing relationship so I don't mind. For my corporate work, I send a quote for them to approve before the shoot but then I invoice afterwards. I only require a deposit when its a large sum or if I don't feel too sure about the client if they are new.
The trick with camera makers is they pass the lead back and forth. I remember when Canon had the lead, followed by Nikon, then Canon again, and now it's Sony. I suspect Canon already knows they're trending in the wrong direction and will course-correct soon. You can potentially see them going this direction with the meaningful firmware improvements to the C70. They can't afford to develop an anti-creator reputation. We'll see.
Sometimes I think Canon has no clue what is happening and they are just riding off their past success which will soon run out. Their feature segmentation among their products is not confidence instilling to someone who is making a living from cameras.
@@davidmorefield I get it. You had to make a decision in the best interests of your business, and it seems to have been a smart one. But I'd also point out that if Canon decided today to beat Sony at its own game, it would probably take 3-4 years to see evidence in its product pipeline. All the design work, engineering, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing takes a long time ... particularly when you think about the size of their ecosystem.
I love your mentality on supporting your network! I’m a freelance DP/Editor in Los Angeles & am always looking to meet other creatives in my area to support this same way! ✨
I just had a consultation call from another freelancer in LA. I spoke to him about possibly setting up a meeting to meet other creatives. I’ll connect you guys.
@@davidmorefield Amazing. Thank you.
First time here. Cool vlog! You got a new sub. Still use my old A7iii for some work. It need some love in the grade but once done and project is compressed for online its good for most small projects. Keep it up ✌️
Yeah I was really surprised/happy with the results. It’s so easy to spend too much money on gear.
And thanks for joining the journey. I hope you get value out of it.
Another great vlog. Having a network for sharing work and expertise is huge.
The more it expands, the more I see how valuable it is.
Totally agree about passing jobs along to other pros if you're not available for a shoot. Keep me in mind for future projects. I'm based in Miami. Wise Wolf Media.
Absolutely man. Please connect with me on ig. Send a dm with your city. That’s where I will search for crew. ruclips.net/video/Rzp3zXTlWAc/видео.html
Have you tried the multicam editing workflow in Final Cut? When I learned how to do it, it greatly cut down my editing time
I’ve done it before but I’m not too familiar.
@@davidmorefield here’s the video that I learned from. It has saved me so much time when using multiple cameras and audio. ruclips.net/video/eP2PQJ3ZBn4/видео.html
@@ejyambao thank you! I need a refresher.
I want that c70 let's talk

Network makes the dream work!
100%
Lol, I shoot canon and completely agree. Canon will announce new cinema cameras in a few months at NAB.
Don’t fall into the trap brother! Save yourself while you can 😂
@@davidmorefield when you switch back, I’ll buy you the first drink 😉
@@HenryOrtlip looks like I’ll be sober for awhile. Once this sells, I ain’t looking back 🍻
@@davidmorefield your fx6 rig is nice! Love the doctors bag method.
@@HenryOrtlip makes a huge difference! I just arrived at a shoot and it took me 20 sec to be in shooting mode
I watch both these guys. Great content. I'm still a Canon shooter as we are so invested in Canon gear it doesn't make sense to switch even though the FX6 is a great platform. I've shot both systems and it's good to know them both.
Yeah you’re definitely a more useful operator by knowing both systems.
Id love for that podcast to release more episodes about a filmmaking career, in general. I get bored of the specifics of every new camera released.
Yo anyway we can I corporate a virtual presence to your coffeeshop session lol or maybe a zoom call.
I was thinking about that actually. I might try to figure that out.
@@davidmorefield I'd join that in a hot second. I'm in Durham, NC.
@@scotey I'd love to join also (Roberto Raymon). I'm in Atlanta but I'm from NC and go back a lot!
Another great vlog David! Will you go any further with the colour grade. Say to get a certain look out of the footage?
Nope 🤣 the ROI isn’t there. I have more projects that need to be edited and shipped out.
@@davidmorefield hahah fair enough get through them man!
The A7iii was my first cam. I look back at the work it produced and I'm very proud of its quality and dynamic range. It's amazing what that 8-bit camera could get done. Awesome vid!
Lol I'm about to buy a fx30, but am still rocking an A7iii. Love that camera, don't think I'll ever get rid of it.
I’m very surprised as well!
@@areeltrip and give up full frame?! 😂
@@davidmorefield haha the plan is to get a fx30 and use it as a main cam, then continue saving for the fx3 or fx6, then fx30 will be b cam. Working a little backwards but 10 bit is more important to my workflow. I was never one to really care about super 35 vs. FF, as Sony as so many glass options, it shouldn't be a debate anymore.
@@areeltrip sounds like a great plan! I love that it has an internal fan and dual card slots.
Great video topic man! I love editing, one of my favorite things to do. Maybe because I've been editing for so long it's kind of 2nd natural at this point but such a therapy session for me.
Outside of features, just having all your lenses on e mount is what I love. With most of the newer cameras having aspc mode you can really utilize all your lenses.
That’s another huge bonus, one unified mount! Just seems to make more sense in the long run.
This is so good David!! I totally agree building up your network is key. Thanks for posting this bro! Always helps me stay motivated!
I think it’s good for up and coming videographers to see the full spectrum of this career. And same man, I love how consistent you are with your videos. Now if we could just get cranky to post bi-weekly haha
I'll be in orlando tomorrow if I can see the camera
Hey I’ll be in town in the evening. If you have a strong offer, we can meet up. 🤝🏻
@@davidmorefield what’s the out right price? I see on eBay it’s at 3000
@@Mysterybarllc average sale price on eBay for ‘body only’ is 4.2k. With the added extras, I expect it to trend above $4.6.
I need to book a consultation!!
Send a message and we can schedule it. What would you like to discuss?
David@morefieldvisuals.com
Another great video dude! Funny enough, that specific podcast episode was on my feed as well so I saved it for later. I've been going back and forth between Canon & Sony, upgrading from my Blackmagic Pocket 4k. I was leaning Canon for a long time but only recently have been leaning more and more towards Sony to the point that all I need now is to rent it to confirm my feelings about it. Anyway keep up the great work!
I’d definitely rent first. What do you want that your BM doesn’t do
@@davidmorefield For one, reliable autofocus. The BM4k doesn't have autofocus to begin with and I'm mostly on run-and-gun jobs so that will help a lot. Second feature, vastly improved low light performance would be sooo helpful. 3rd, internal ND filters. 4th, higher framerates at higher resolutions is a nice feature.
I can say that I'll miss BM-Raw but after getting a chance to work with the FX6 & FX9 footage it not only was easy to work with but also, I preferred the color science in relation to the variety of LUTS that I have. I barely had to do much to make the image look stunning. So yeah there's a lot to look forward to however it's always been my plan to rent first. This is something I wish I did early in my career before dumping $$$ into camera gear. haha
@@cinema_dude08 I’ll just say… the grass is greener on this side.
