FiveCatPenagerie I’m grabbing that loupe now. If you have more than 5 pens I feel it’s necessary. Funnily enough it’s my first stub nib on a Plumix I’m getting it for.
It certainly was. Your video on making a pen more wet also came in handy recently when I had to fix my Parker Frontier which is a bit too try without any modifications but after fixing it, it writes beautifully and when paired with Mont Blanc's Mystery Black. As a 15 year old who doesn't know much about Fountain Pens your videos have been quite helpful :) -rant over-
Great video. Very informative! I have a BelOmo I purchased from Mr. Binder's site and I love the thing, but now I may take a chance on a cheapo loupe for toting in my EDC bag.
Stephen, I have the Belarus loupe, with a Lanyard, Lanyard is very useful, as you have loupe available to you at all times. Yes you are right, if you are serious about pens you have to have a loupe. Information I got that if it is your first loupe get 10x, when experienced then go to 20x. This recommendation sounds right.
Ahh, that WAS a beautiful nib =) Thanks so much for such detailed information~ am shopping for my first loupe, looking around for people I can tolerate listening to, in hope that I might learn a bit. I learned a lot! Appreciate your taking the time for this, I'll be returning for the pen posts~ another new interest, a strong one as it turns out. ~Samantha in NM
I tinker with a lot of things in addition to fountain pens. A good loupe is something I've been putting off. Now that I work with analog cameras and watches, I should've listened to "buy once, cry once". Like your fountain pen collection, it looks like you've also had a journey of finding the "one".
Its actually interesting to look at the feed through the breather hole in the nib - most of the pens I have have a single deep groove in line with the gap between the tines (a couple seem to be misaligned slightly but I can't say that I have noticed a qualitative difference because of that). The Lamys seem to have multiple shallow grooves parallel with the gap in the tines. Might be interesting to see what characteristics align with what nib behaviours...
Hello Doc brown ! May I recommend from eBay the SE 10x TRIPLET WITH LED it is a wonderful little thing with a light . However unlike the one you have this one has light all the way around the ring , a ring of light I'd you will, instead of one light , which in my opinion makes for hot spots and lots of reflection , this one I am speaking of makes things brighter thought causing reflection. I don't remember the price but it was less than 15$
Stephen, anything that you share with us that is fountain pen related is going to be useful, no need to worry on that one. Another interesting video, thanks :)
No, typed the above into Amazon uk's search and there was one which had been recommended by BBC Wildlife, this had a little leather pouch. But I think I found the one you're refering to, which is more expensive.
It doesn't really deserve mentioning among good quality optics, but I have been fiddling with a USB "20x-200x microscope" - which is really just a 2 megapixel webcam on a fixed mount with a manual focus that allows you to get in really close to the subject. I've been taking some pretty cool pics of my nibs. The "magnification" really just comes down to how close you get to the subject (as little as 2cm) and the resolution you choose to save the image at...
Why don't you use your other camera (the one you use for writing samples) during the intro bits? Surely it's of better quality and has better focus than a webcam?
... But I remember that the measures worked in a different way then the most obvious. That may explain why the higher price loupes says only "10x". Tks for the video again.
Well, thanks to watching this at 3am, I'm now the proud owner of a pair of Steampunk style goggles, the lenses being two jeweler's loupes with LEDs attached. Thanks for showing me the light! Had never seen that. These should also be a fun fashion accessory to wear walking around the quaint streets of Los Angeles. (If anybody gives me trouble, I shall refer them to Prof. Brown's presentation. So there.) ;)
like that brass colored cheapo ebay loupe. have one as well. don't know the power on it, but as you showed, once you hold it close to your eye it's entirely sufficient. (i also use it to check the edge on my knives after sharpening) nice vid. long vid ;)
Once I needed to buy binoculars and I found out these same "measure indications" (10x, 20x etc.). I thought the prices didn't correspond to the magnification, then I discovered that the indications weren't related to the "how much magnification" I would get, but to the distance or to the difference of size between the lenses - it's been a long time, I don't remember exactly, you need to check this out...
To echo davidberlin07 Continue doc Brown about anything involving fountain pens even if it dose not involve the actual pen. Reason ? Speaking for myself I began watching you when I had zero knowledge now thanks to you going beyond just the pens I have more knowledge and can share it (and convert 😉). Your channel is not just a showcase of pens but a true source of knowledge. Keep it up !!!!
Just got my BeLomo 10x in the mail yesterday and I'm amazed at how good the optics are.

Very interesting demo of loupes, thanks so much for the information.
Excellent review! very detailed , you even tried the light which I thought you might not. Not boring at all. Thanks
fantastic informative video for someone who knows nothing about loupes thank you so much.
Glad you found this useful!
Excellent video. Tons of useful information clearly articulated. I wish everyone on youtube provided information as well as you do.
Thank you, I am honoured.

Boring? This was probably one of the better videos that I saw this week! Subscribed.
+funky3ddy Thank you, I appreciate it!

I've noticed a lot of expensive loupes don't have black interiors but the cheaper ones seem to do which is confusing. Is there a video on reflections?

What is scary is that i sat through this without thinking it was boring even ONCE.
Thank you.

What's your favorite loop so far, Stephen? I'm thinking about getting a Belomo.
Had no idea you can easily obtain loupes with a light - I'll have to check that out. Thanks for this video!

Do you know of any nice, leak proof pen cases ?
What does real dimoind look like?
I use loops to inspect my mechanical watches.

Do you know of a good triplet for about £20 which I can easily purchase in the UK, preferably one with led light? Thanks.
I don't have any experience with buying loupes the the UK, sorry.
get the Belomo 10x from ebay if the seller is in the EU. You will not regret it.

Interesting and informative...as ever!
very interesting 🤔 I'll look into the Goulet loupe

the cheap loupe is about 4x

What's the name of the website you said on minute 6:16?
Greetings!
Is this the "wildlife" one?
Can share the link you bought the belomo loupe? I know ebay and amazons has tonnes of them but i just need to buy a genuine pc
I got it from Richard Binder's site. I don't think he sells products anymore
You can buy loupes directly from BelOMO's website, they even have free int'l shipping.
How one can go on for 18 minutes about a loupe, I do not know but I shall watch it nonetheless.
the loupe I have says it's "40x" don't care what is the actual magnification it serves my purposes cheap as hell on ebay
