While something to this effect did happen, it wasn’t at the request of Spassky. Spassky was a perfect gentleman throughout the entire tournament and put up with a lot of nonsense from Fischer because of his love of the game, knowing he’d probably lose as well. We was nearly 150 points the underdog going into the championship. The room search that occurred was at the behest of the rest of the Russian federation.

I got a different view on this. His level of concentration was so high that the flies were dying trying to get out and he felt everything times 100. lol Pretty beast.
It's the stress of competitive play, man. It's already taxing on the brain to have to compute several permutations ahead. Add to that the high stakes and the pressure to perform and you'd go crazy too. lol Also in this case, the stakes were even higher since it was US vs Russia.
One of the things I know happened at this time was that the Soviet team would give a drink to their guy. If it had a stimulant it was a signal to attack. If it had a depressant, it meant that the team thought his position was vulnerable and that he needed to defend.
I can relate. when I'm in total silence I can feel the bump of the window downstairs being blown by the wind. what should I do? tell the wind "stop blowing so hard!" ?
Why were they all so paranoid? Knowing what we know now, especially of that era, they were almost certainly spying on them. But what were these chess players aware of that they knew to be worried about being spied on?
Chess was a big deal back then used as a propaganda to portray the Russians as the intellectuals.... so it pretty much like the race to the moon between USA and Russia to see who builds the rocket first.... so there were definitely spies or some tricks that both government used to manipulate the enemy
I think that this behavior is common sometimes when people are at a very high stress competition. Someone I know was at the IPhO competition at Hong Kong and afterwards he was convinced that an earthquake had happened inside there. And to give some context an earthquake hadn't happened there for decades.
I like to pull stuff like that on tournaments. I would say the opponents chair is affecting my concentration and they found that the chair would squeak depending how you sat on it. I won that round
this movie is a garbage but i really like the fischers look when Spaskij is starring at him. Its like ok do whatever you want I cannot care less, but maybe you should rather watch the board...
At least it's an original story, I'd rather watch this than fast and furious 18, Paul Walkers presidential campaign goes wrong, because they somehow got him in the film because they already filmed all 99 instalments before the car accident so his legacy can live on.
Fischer had a better gaming chair thats why he won we all know the truth
+1
Fischer's wifi was way better.

damn was thinking the same...
I like this scene as it showed the Spassky had some quirky eccentricities, causing even Fisher to raise eyebrows!

That's what I think the ending of this scene suggested. Also the camera noise from the stage cameras was putting off Fisher too.
That's what I got too. Like you said, his level of concetration was so high that he could feel the vibrations from flies buzzing in the light fixture.
I've heard of x-raying a rook or bishop in chess, but never a chair! :)
Underrated pun :D
Two dead flies is also an expression. That search for the chair was as useful as two dead flies

2 min silence for each fly in tht chair

I assumed spiderman would have used spiders instead if flies. But by using flies, it throws of suspicion. the permutations are endless.

Can they just change another chair instead of forfeit the match?
There's literally a stack of chairs behind Fischer haha.
You cannot change the environment in any way once the match has begun.

Sabertooth and spiderman :)

This was game 3? Spassky was disturbed by noise from outside the building because Fischer insisted on playing in the back room.

Yes KGB was making all kind of tests, trying to find out if CIA isn't somehow affecting Spassky.
Yes, but I don't believe Spassky reacted that way during the match itself. He reported feeling radiation after the match in an interview.
