    James this is quality,so envious of how driven and productive you are with your time! dealt with the curve ball of a knackered cylinder head you turn that negative into a positive by rolling your sleeves up and smashing out a couple of other jobs instead. By far my favourite youtuber down to earth likeable and just as humble as you were back in the days of James' world top lad 👌

    Love the new style mini, daughter has r56 07 plate mellow yellow black roof and looks stunning especially in this sunny weather. Enjoying your videos as always very hands on and informative. Hope it all goes well with the engine .

    I bought my gf a mini and it had pretty much same problem so i took it back to car dealer but you made this look easy. Good videos keep it up 👍

    Great vid as always James, if you can afford it replace the head, if not see about a professional repair and test.

    Cheers mate good vid. You can see the colour difference in the exhaust valves in cylinders 1 and 2 where waters got in

    For future reference, the boot can be opened with the emergency release under the back seat if fitted. Lift the rear seat and there should be a cable with a little finger loop.
    There are some great groups and pages on Facebook for spares and advice too. Always people breaking Mini’s.

    Same thing happened to me in my mk4 gti price was the same to get a tested second hand head as it was to get it welded up and decked to use again.

    Great work done so far pistons look like new will notice a difference . Shame about the head wrong coolant in the past been used .

    There's a pull tab under the rear seats for the hatch. It's actually really easy to get to. The rear seats just lift up by hand.

    👍🏻 wise man the head is scrap... you could get it spray welded and reskimmed but if you got a good deal on a replacement then happy days.. can’t wait to hear it running.

    Changing the wing on most modern cars is very easy I changed the wing. On my mk3 Renault Clio 58 plate after I bumped it on a gate but it’s was quite a big side panel to change but did it all by my self and I’m not technical like him

    Boot release catch is under the rear seat which is very easy to shift out the way!

    I would get a new head the one you've got is scrap it is ashame thou. Never mind these things are sent to try us you are doing a good job james far play to you that panel looks really nice and sort of easy to replace

    Nice spot on the head damage. I'd guess it's been run for a long time with just water in the coolant.
    It is repairable if you know someone who can TIG weld aluminium then get the head skimmed.

    There is a boot release pull under the back seat, mine has it, kinda like a bonnet pull cable...

    There is a secret cable under the rear seat ! just to let you know if the battery operated boot isn't working or if the battery isnt hooked up

      I think Minis from late 2004 came with this emergency release. Older onse might not have them except somebody upgraded it.

    I'm sure there is a boot release handle under the rear seat cushion for when the switch don't work or no battery

    Engineering shop will weld and skim the head no problem, meat and potatoes for them

      Definately, a tig weld on the edge and then a skim and it will be fine

    Little tip if you lift the back seat up theres a black plastic ring attached to a cable this is the machanical boot release for future reference

    Just replace the head. Once upon a time i temporarily repaired a cracked head on a 1.6 Ford diesel with JB Weld (its basically glue). It worked for 3 weeks till i could source another (this was back in the early 90's).

    Enjoying the mini content. Ill know abit more of my gf's car. Im still gonna haveto check out the parasistic battery drain. id say get a new head anyways despite of money. exhaust would be straight forward except the bracket thingy would annoy you ive no idea why they have the wierd silencer bracket. hopefully they'll deliver quick. Cant wait for more mini content.

    james, you can always put a long pipe or breaker bar between the seat and press onto the brake pedal and turn the key to number 2 that way you can check your brakes on your own

    If you lift the back seat, there is a back-up lever to open the boot.

    You could weld over where the head is corroded and then use a dremel type tool to machine it back to stock

    Theres a good head machining shop in Briston if you are near. Called L.A Whitmore and co. May save you money getting them to look over it.

    If you lift the base of the back seat behind the drivers seat there is a cable to release boot, pull the ring and it will open for future reference when battery is off the car or pancake flat !!

      Richard Mounfield I think they didn’t fit the internal boot release on early models, the 52 plate Cooper we used to have didn’t have one so I retro fitted one.

    When looking for a good second hand head just remember the cooper and cooper s run the same head just different valves so would just need to swap yours over is you got a cooper s head

    If you have ordered a second hand head what's to say that head is not cracked or warped , I personally would have had the head welded and re-surfaced.
    before fitting the new head I would check it for flatness with a good straight edge and some feeler blades.

    That’s why changing coolant on a regular basis is helpful, so is changing the oil.

    That’s gone on 1&2 take it to an engine shop to have it checked before you do and does it need new studs all great videos

    There is a key hole next to the boot button on the right hand side for when the car has no power.

    Can't tell you how many times I've done the same with the electric boot on my car, or it just randomly doesn't work sometimes. They're such a dumb idea.

    Last time I had one like this on a VW I took it to a local engineeting company and had it aluminium welded prior to skimming did the job

    You can get a machine shop weld the eaten away jacket then grinding and reserfcing, yet since labor will cost you more than the cost of getting a new used head, Id scrap it.
    One the new used head, get a grinding pit and do some he port and polish, it will be a good learning experience and some vids for viewing pleasure.

    For maybe next time some cars have a manual unlock button on the inside of the boot near the latch. Just saves you reconnecting the battery

    Haha, I had an old Renault a few years back that water would collect in and fill up. I drilled a hole about 2mm wide, and the water would drain straight out. Simples. And cheap.

    boot will open without the battery if you lift up the back seat and pull the cord that is hidden under the seat

    Minis are a pain in the arse. Changed the oil in mine on Saturday, went for a quick run after and two coil packs have died 🤷‍♂️ how’s that even possible?

      That's like me buying spare engine sensors for my cinquecento and when you go to use them they only last a couple of months as they are from fleabay and the quality is questionable. My Renault scenic used to eat coils.... so much so I used to keep 4 in the boot.

      BMW minis are crap, window problems, locking problems, electrical gremlins because of the great positioning of the BCM, and brake pipes.

    Is it not better to use a hard plastic scraper over a metal on as it can gouge the metal surface causing leaks etc?

    This is what happens when people just use neat water instead of proper antifreeze. It corrodes alot quicker and you get this. I would personally have it tig welded and skimmed. Better the devil you know. Great series. 👍
