I love how thorough you are with everything, no corners cut
James this is quality,so envious of how driven and productive you are with your time! dealt with the curve ball of a knackered cylinder head you turn that negative into a positive by rolling your sleeves up and smashing out a couple of other jobs instead. By far my favourite youtuber down to earth likeable and just as humble as you were back in the days of James' world top lad 👌
Gotta hate days where nothing goes to plan!!
Good come back with the wing and the rear lights👍 it’s all progress at the end of the day!
Cheers for sharing👍👍
thank you for explaining everything so perfectly, i just bought a mini ,and work needs to be done on it as well....
you show everything just how i need it, and your video’s are ehmm... well how people need to make video’s👍🏻
thank you for the effort this really helps a lot ,keep on going greetings 😁
Love the new style mini, daughter has r56 07 plate mellow yellow black roof and looks stunning especially in this sunny weather. Enjoying your videos as always very hands on and informative. Hope it all goes well with the engine .
Some classic 'Reach Around' action on them rear lights...Eric 'O' would be proud of you....
Love south main auto
@@paulmunday5552 yah he's really good and so is pine hill auto repair
Really loving these mini vids, excellent stuff and incredibly interesting. I’ve always thought about getting a Mini Cooper S, but I’ve been put off by numerous reviews and people’s opinions
Favourite notification to get keep up the good work mate!!
I enjoy your videos they are educational and also shows person who put themselves to a task I like your car choice’s too.
I bought my gf a mini and it had pretty much same problem so i took it back to car dealer but you made this look easy. Good videos keep it up 👍
Great vid as always James, if you can afford it replace the head, if not see about a professional repair and test.
Dont forget new headbolts too....all the best and thanks for your vids.
Cheers mate good vid. You can see the colour difference in the exhaust valves in cylinders 1 and 2 where waters got in
Love the mini build!
Great job James, good video, greetings from Holland 👍🏻
Nice job, enjoying this Mini adventure...👍
Great Video Again mate , mini is coming together nicely you should give it a polish once everything is back together and car is running with the new exhaust on as well get the British Racing Green paint sparkling 👍
For future reference, the boot can be opened with the emergency release under the back seat if fitted. Lift the rear seat and there should be a cable with a little finger loop.
There are some great groups and pages on Facebook for spares and advice too. Always people breaking Mini’s.
Yeah it can except for 2001 models
Feel for you in the heat, was changing fnt springs on 09 Focus on Sunday, hot work.
Same thing happened to me in my mk4 gti price was the same to get a tested second hand head as it was to get it welded up and decked to use again.
Great work done so far pistons look like new will notice a difference . Shame about the head wrong coolant in the past been used .
There's a pull tab under the rear seats for the hatch. It's actually really easy to get to. The rear seats just lift up by hand.
👍🏻 wise man the head is scrap... you could get it spray welded and reskimmed but if you got a good deal on a replacement then happy days.. can’t wait to hear it running.
Changing the wing on most modern cars is very easy I changed the wing. On my mk3 Renault Clio 58 plate after I bumped it on a gate but it’s was quite a big side panel to change but did it all by my self and I’m not technical like him
Enjoying the mini adventure
Boot release catch is under the rear seat which is very easy to shift out the way!
Mine didn't have 1 on a 52 plate cooper s
@@jaybooth9168 All but very early Minis had the manual release cable, 52 plate is just too early :(
I would get a new head the one you've got is scrap it is ashame thou. Never mind these things are sent to try us you are doing a good job james far play to you that panel looks really nice and sort of easy to replace
Hi mate , thanks for the vlog . Apologise if I missed it , how many miles on that engine to cause such corrosion on the engine block ?
Well spotted, would be interested to know if the compression was down on pot 1 or was it just loosing coolent
Nice spot on the head damage. I'd guess it's been run for a long time with just water in the coolant.
It is repairable if you know someone who can TIG weld aluminium then get the head skimmed.
There is a boot release pull under the back seat, mine has it, kinda like a bonnet pull cable...
Good for you getting stuck in. Great work.
There is a secret cable under the rear seat ! just to let you know if the battery operated boot isn't working or if the battery isnt hooked up
I think Minis from late 2004 came with this emergency release. Older onse might not have them except somebody upgraded it.
I'm sure there is a boot release handle under the rear seat cushion for when the switch don't work or no battery
Will you be getting the replacement head pressure tested, before fitting?
Engineering shop will weld and skim the head no problem, meat and potatoes for them
Yeah I thought that was an option
Definately, a tig weld on the edge and then a skim and it will be fine
I actually was about to ask that when I saw your comment, thanks for beating me to the punch!
Will there possibly be an invisible hairline crack that when welding will make it open up ??
BigD i was just going say this
Little tip if you lift the back seat up theres a black plastic ring attached to a cable this is the machanical boot release for future reference
Great update James sir and attention to detail on that head problem better to find out now than another head gasket later.
Almost at 52k already loving the mini videos
Your doing the right thing James better to sort it now than replace the head gas get and still have a leak do it right do it once
Get the head welded and skimmed , simple fix for any machine shop
Well done m8 wicked job
Great video --- get it welded and skimmed --good to go
Just replace the head. Once upon a time i temporarily repaired a cracked head on a 1.6 Ford diesel with JB Weld (its basically glue). It worked for 3 weeks till i could source another (this was back in the early 90's).
Enjoying the mini content. Ill know abit more of my gf's car. Im still gonna haveto check out the parasistic battery drain. id say get a new head anyways despite of money. exhaust would be straight forward except the bracket thingy would annoy you ive no idea why they have the wierd silencer bracket. hopefully they'll deliver quick. Cant wait for more mini content.
Great Video!
james, you can always put a long pipe or breaker bar between the seat and press onto the brake pedal and turn the key to number 2 that way you can check your brakes on your own
I use the good old brolly.
Loving the mini series James. The vids have been a fantastic help to me. There’s a company called vehicle clips UK that are brilliant at all types of trim clips. Very reasonable and super fast delivery. Can’t wait for next mini vid !! Thanks a million 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The real world does exist on RUclips, Remember not everything goes perfectly, having said that, I always enjoy your videos, keep them coming. Is the fiesta ST getting unwrapped when the mini is finished, now winter is over?
Came here because I have an Astra in working on, might get a mini now 😂 quality videos fella
Loving the mini videos. Slightly missing the Mondeo 😅 I’m i Ford owner ok 😅
Scrap man will be round for that panel 😂 👍
Any old scrap metal tv's and electricals
@@shanekneeshaw3483 Or your lawnmower if you leave it out by accident!
I can quite believe it with that guy he come up my way
steven or a satellite dish that you left on the drive while you fit the cable 🙄
Bastards never come round here anymore, got a load of shit i could do with getting rid of haha
If you lift the back seat, there is a back-up lever to open the boot.
another a great video 😀
You could weld over where the head is corroded and then use a dremel type tool to machine it back to stock
Theres a good head machining shop in Briston if you are near. Called L.A Whitmore and co. May save you money getting them to look over it.
First Class Vid " J ".
Baz.
If you lift the base of the back seat behind the drivers seat there is a cable to release boot, pull the ring and it will open for future reference when battery is off the car or pancake flat !!
Richard Mounfield I think they didn’t fit the internal boot release on early models, the 52 plate Cooper we used to have didn’t have one so I retro fitted one.
Stuart Farrington My wife's is a 04 model thanks for the update . I personally am not a fan of electric boot locks .
Shame about the head. Whats location of your nearest powerflow exhaust center? Would be interested in you doing a video for the mini exhaust.
When looking for a good second hand head just remember the cooper and cooper s run the same head just different valves so would just need to swap yours over is you got a cooper s head
If the valves are different then surely they won`t fit.
@@pauljoe780 different metals as the cooper s runs hotter but they are the same size
If you have ordered a second hand head what's to say that head is not cracked or warped , I personally would have had the head welded and re-surfaced.
before fitting the new head I would check it for flatness with a good straight edge and some feeler blades.
What is your total for this car Inc the new head?
looks like the indicator fluid is leaking
Can post a video how to check if the head is flat or not?
Do you know how the head got that damage ?
Near sure there’s a manual cable pull emergency release for the boot under the rear seats
That’s why changing coolant on a regular basis is helpful, so is changing the oil.
How many miles had this done? Bit concerning how the head has been eaten away that bad
What about a set of new oil rings when you have went that far
In your country they not do head planning??
Whats the mileage on this mini?
That’s gone on 1&2 take it to an engine shop to have it checked before you do and does it need new studs all great videos
top tip. the flat bit infront of your cap is meant to shield your eyes from the sun
Oh a fashion NAZI. Bless.
LOL
what caused that corrosion? how to prevent that
There is a key hole next to the boot button on the right hand side for when the car has no power.
Good effort James. It is annoying having to leave something half finished.
Just for future reference there’s a manual release under the rear seats for the boot if i remember correctly ✌️
Waq going to say exactly the same thing. :)
Get her weighed in bud. 👍
Traslant
Does any one have try to swap the roof from s or jcw version?
Will work fine
Do you say how much you paid for the mini?
Yeah another head for sure ,that old one may seal initially ,but it's a ticking timebomb ,
Get it welded and skimmed mate no issues
mini is a nice project car
🇬🇧Use auto gleam bummer care on all the black trim it’s amazing I use it on mine looks like a new car plus put the white stripes on the bonnet 👍👍👍
Can't tell you how many times I've done the same with the electric boot on my car, or it just randomly doesn't work sometimes. They're such a dumb idea.
Last time I had one like this on a VW I took it to a local engineeting company and had it aluminium welded prior to skimming did the job
You can get a machine shop weld the eaten away jacket then grinding and reserfcing, yet since labor will cost you more than the cost of getting a new used head, Id scrap it.
One the new used head, get a grinding pit and do some he port and polish, it will be a good learning experience and some vids for viewing pleasure.
For maybe next time some cars have a manual unlock button on the inside of the boot near the latch. Just saves you reconnecting the battery
Haha, I had an old Renault a few years back that water would collect in and fill up. I drilled a hole about 2mm wide, and the water would drain straight out. Simples. And cheap.
yes i agree mate with you
boot will open without the battery if you lift up the back seat and pull the cord that is hidden under the seat
eads gone FEENEESHED
Minis are a pain in the arse. Changed the oil in mine on Saturday, went for a quick run after and two coil packs have died 🤷♂️ how’s that even possible?
That's like me buying spare engine sensors for my cinquecento and when you go to use them they only last a couple of months as they are from fleabay and the quality is questionable. My Renault scenic used to eat coils.... so much so I used to keep 4 in the boot.
They were built to last 10 years only
BMW minis are crap, window problems, locking problems, electrical gremlins because of the great positioning of the BCM, and brake pipes.
The savage garage sponsored by eBay
Just an FYI, there’s a boot release cable under the rear seats :)
Guys need help my engine rattles in my car when accelerating more so when at higher rpm 3000+ been told the car has noisy tappets could it be that? TIA
Petrol 1.6 vts c2 btw
I agree with you.
Is it not better to use a hard plastic scraper over a metal on as it can gouge the metal surface causing leaks etc?
Get it welded and machined 😊
whats with all the fails :))))
nice video bro' !!
This is what happens when people just use neat water instead of proper antifreeze. It corrodes alot quicker and you get this. I would personally have it tig welded and skimmed. Better the devil you know. Great series. 👍
