@TunesDoneByOne George Martin would not have had so many musicians and layers. It would have been much cleaner from the start, with fewer musicians. But let's not forget that Spector produced a hit album and hit song, so hey, he did his job. George was also a big part of the original mix and was happy with it upon release.

I thought the original vinyl was just awful. great songs but a horrible mix. 2001 was much better and I tell you if you download a high res version of this new one and play it on a good system you will be floored. it's amazing. The new vinyl is a bit muddled but still better than the original. the CD version is about as good as 2001

After listening to the new mix, I was greatly disappointed in how loud and overly bassy it was. But the greatest irritant was George’s voice being mixed so out front as to sound unnatural. The thing I Love about the original mix is the way his voice fits organically with the music, almost like he’s singing live in the studio.

This morning I've been listening to the 2014 remaster on vinyl. I can't see a single reason why the album needed to to be "redone" again. I'm with you in my belief that the 2014 or the 2000 remasters are excellent. The two versions each present excellent sound while maintaining the integrity of the original release. The attacks on our friend and his wife are completely unfounded and as I stated in my video they deserve much much more respect than some people have afforded them. I'll take what they say over that of someone whose understanding is limited to something they cherry picked from a book.

In the liner notes of the 30th anniversary re-mix - George states that he would like to hear a version without the reverb. Hence - Dhani tried to accomplish this. It doesn’t mean he made a better version but he tried his best. If George was around - maybe he wouldn’t have approved - since he isn’t we have to go by Dhani’s ears and he obviously feels this is something that meets his dads goal.
If it was me - I would have included an update of the original in addition to the new less reverb version. Most likely people would have less to stew over this way.
BTW - when you remove the reverb - would that not also require a remix to the song? Some people say they don’t like the remix on this new record - but I am guessing they had too do remix in order to remove the reverb properly. Dhani said in Apple Scruffs they didn’t remove the reverb because it sounded like a demo without it.

@@justinpenn9250 The problem is, I guess, that I don't listen with Dhani's ears. Whatever he may have thought he was doing the end result was a mix I'll likely never listen to again.

I understand that there may have been serious limitations to what could have been done with a remix as much of the reverb was a part of the recording process, so was baked in. However, I don't think this remix would have satisfied George's desire for more clarity and in that sense I think it's an opportunity lost. I was looking forward to the remix, but it just seemed badly done.
The remix has made me somewhat more appreciative of the original.

I personally like the 2000 remaster, it overall to me sounds the best, and it was done with George himself. 2014 edition I believe is closest to the original release, but remastered enough to get rid of some of the original source noise (tape hiss etc) . I really like the packaging of the new 2021 and the demos and outtakes. I am glad they did it and we are able to have the material, but my go to will be the 2000. Thanks for sharing and take care

Good they tried to do something different - this was George’s wish - so good on Dhani and Paul Hicks for trying. Could they please everyone - no chance ! Whatever we prefer we all have access to diff versions why don’t we just celebrate all the versions of s wonderful recording. If you do not like a particular version you do not have to have it !

It's about the music at the end of the day.we might not see it.but in 20 years there will be folks who say this 50th release had an impact on them. So even if for one person, that's a win. I bought the 3 LP set with mostly credit card points and $11 USD cash. I like the sound, though it could have used a tweak here and there. With such a release, it's impossible to please everybody. Then I downloaded the full 5 CD set from one of those websites. The cost of recording this album has already been amortized long ago. You're paying for the cost of remixing and manufacturing the album. The prices being charged are an outrage. We criticize Yoko Ono, but I have to tell you, Olivia and Dhani have surpassed her. The price of a non essential good such as a record is based - besides the cost of production - on PERCEIVED VALUE. I'm very sure if PETE BEST or RINGO STARR tried to pull off such a stunt, there would be boxcars and warehouses bursting with unsold product. If I hadn't had those credit card points to pay for most of the album, I wouldn't have bought it at all. BTW - The next GH Estate release, I can bet you will be the MONO VINYL OF WONDERWALL MUSIC. But we'll have to wait another 10 years at least. It will surely be a box set as well. The only people I know that have bought that UBER $999- box set are You Tubers who post videos on Beatles material.

    • @continentalgin

The Uber concept and price has to be a Monty Python joke. It's a bit humorous to see that those who blew a grand on it are the most staunch defenders of the remixes. Fancy that. I can understand if the purchaser leaves it untouched and puts it on Discogs ten years from now as 'still sealed' for $1500, but who in their right mind would go for it?

I think Wah-Wah take 1 is pretty much what it would sound like without wall of sound, minus the finished vocals and horns. You're right, the blu-ray doesn't make much sense as an investment if you don't have the equipment for surround. That begin said, unless my memory is playing tricks on me, the recent Lennon sets started at the same price point.
I think the remix has come in for some excessive, unfair criticism. But to illustrate how subjectively we all hear music, I would never have thought to mention the bass drum on Isn't it a Pity 1, whereas it might be a crucial moment for someone else, so mileage will clearly vary depending on what favorite moments and sounds. Overall, the remix may not replace the original for me in the longer term but I am enjoying it on its own merits.

Regarding George’s vocals have to remember that when we’re listening to demos and run-throughs sometimes it takes a number of takes to get the vocal up to where it supposed to be, and that’s why the vocal might not of been used for the final take. I sometimes have a hard time distinguishing between Clapton and George because I think they hung around so much that George became a better guitar player and adapted some of Clapton‘s techniques?

Referencing 10:08 it is a testament to people's passion for music and for ALL the musicians that participated in the original recording that it can STILL generate controversy 50 years down the line, because it was controversial at the time, for the religious nature and also because it was the first major release of a fully produced (as opposed to self produced) album from a Beatle. This is cool! It's not a bad thing at all to be arguing about music, my friends and I do it all the time.
I think it is a different era, tech has changed so a new version will come out as long as people are interested. It's all good!

Could definitely do without the Apple Jam. For me the album ends with hear me lord. And the new 2021 mix was probably done because A) the 50th anniversary of course. B) George did actually want to remix the whole thing but for one reason or another didn't. I love the new voices and bass on Art Of Dying but George's swirling electric guitar isn't out enough, it's been hidden a bit. It's mostly hit and a few misses with this 2021 mix. But what the 2021 can't compete with is the smoothness of the musical mix with the 1970 mix

I like Apple Jam! Without the 3rd vinyl disk, ATMP would have been such a melancholic and, at best, whimsical album. Apple Jam were the rock 'n' roll sides.

@@JohnnyAlegre I don't know about "whimsical," but certainly ATMP is one of the greatest albums of all time. Out of the Blue is fantastic and I love the Apple Jam label. Beautiful artwork if you ask me.

@gringo557 ** I agree 100% about Apple Jam. That, and the bonus disks made my ATMP50 expense worthwhile. Regarding the "whimsical" mood of sides 1-4, there's nothing wrong with that -- the vibe fits right in with the gnomes and Sir Frankie Crisp and the castle that's Friar Park -- but rock 'n' roll, they barely are -- so the Apple Jam sides were great for the edge they provided.

Excellent, succinct review. I'm a CD guy. Bought the 3CD version because the 5 CD set was outrageously priced. And I happen to love it. Except for the little booklet. Kind of useless. The original release I found was always a little tough to listen to because of the Spector sound. The 30th anniversary (colorized) version was a huge improvement sonically. Never heard that 2014 remaster you discussed but this latest remix sounds marvelous. No complaints.

There's no way to get rid of the Wall of Sound on this album, even if that were desirable, because it partly comes from the way the songs were recorded- a large ensemble of people playing in a room, including people duplicating parts.

Thanks for the review John. I found it enticing. George' Harrison and the carious critics, both professional and many who think they are professional, have had all this time to reflect on the original release, and all the subsequent remasters, and or remix's for decades now. What we have, the 1970 release, should be what we get. The Wall of Sound complaints are what they are. To me, a prime example of just being blasted out of the room with WOS is the Leonard Cohen "Death Of A Ladies Man" album. Which to me can feel quite overpowering at times. But, I digress... Depending on my mood the WOS for ATMP can get a little annoying and bombastic, especially if I am playing it loud. However, I am someone who enjoys 30th anniversary remaster. Who knows??? Maybe there should be a "All Things Must Pass...Stripped Naked" one day.

The full 2 lp version of ATMP can fit onto one of the cd's so they should have had the album on one cd and the apple jam all alone on the second disc. Would have been a better listening experience.

Thanks for your review. I'm a bit more positive about it than you - but, as you say, we are all entitled to our own opinions! A couple of specific comments. I've never enjoyed Wah Wah despite it often being listed among people's favourite tracks. In contrast, I find the Apple Jam to be a bit of fun and well worth a listen - which is again contrary to most people's views. I wonder if George would have been happy with this 50th anniversary edition. I suspect he may have liked how his vocals are brought forward in the mix.

I was disappointed with the quality control of dish warps on 3 out of 8 vinyl lps plus the high end detail is veiled covered with boomy bass and muffled muddy audio. It's the worst sounding ATMP ever released. I'm sticking with my original German vinyl and the 2017 remaster and saving myself $250.

I have the 2001 2014 and I’ve heard enough of the 2021 remix to say the 2014 CD release is my favorite. The sound is clearer than the 30th with better clarity. It is not as ear piercingly loud as the new remix and also maintains the original mix. The 2014 CD release is my favorite digital version of this album.
There was a 2010 HD digital download version that is supposed to the best sounding release of this album but it is no longer available, it is sort of the holy grail for this album. Too bad.

Another great a very honest video John & for me personally i don't like this new remix at all & certain merits yes but on the whole it isn't a patch on the 30th anniversary remaster.... In my own opinion his most famous song My Sweet Lord suffers the most as it sounds like it was recorded down a drain & is just so flat presented here & as for George's vocals they warble all over the place! Some of the outtakes are very nice but as for value for money this is a terrible buy! I'm just hoping the Beatles Let It Be/Get Back forthcoming package is much much better!!!!

Want to say, I don't have the 50th edition. I have it twice already, no need to buy it again.
I was listening to "Living In The Material World" the other day and think the songs on it are just as good as "ATMP." Let's just say that "Living In The Material World" came out first and it had the "ATMP" production (with Spector producing) and "ATMP" came out second and had the "Living In The Material World" production (with Harrison producing).
Would we be talking about "Living In The Material World" as the big album with all the remixes and "ATMP" as a really good album?

Overall, yeah it was a bit of a miss. The drums sound great, I will admit, and thankfully a bit of unnecessary echo was reduced. Run of the Mill and My Sweet Lord sounds really great remixed, and I did like some of the outtakes (especially the Hear Me Lord you’ve mentioned). But George’s voice being up in the mix was a bit unsettling to me. It felt like he was too loud to the point it felt like he was narrating and not singing as part of the song

Unfortunately the songs that suffered the most from Spector's bombastic ruination still sound bad ( Wah Wah, Let It Down, Awaiting on You All and the dreadful horns on the Title track ). Guess some of his nonsense was un-removable. The out takes and basic tracks are fantastic, however. The Day 1 tracks are particularly wonderful, with just Ringo and Klaus . Thanks for another great video, John.
